Ryder News for Dec. 29, 2016

Delores Alg says, “Love hearing the news from Ryder, Sue, you're doing a great job, really appreciate the effort you put in to share the news. Also appreciate the effort your little "elf", Faye Karna, puts in. I miss my friends there and want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Jeff, Kevin and myself!”

L-R: Visiting at Barb Bofenkamp’s in Mesa, Arizona were Roy Shuler, Stewart Bofenkamp, Vicki Bofenkamp, and Barb Bofenkamp in the front.

Stewart Bofenkamp says, “Hi Sue. Merry Christmas to Kenny and you and family. Look forward to your weekly Ryder news. Thank you for continuing to do this. The picture I’ve included was taken December 11 down in Mesa, AZ while my wife Vicki and I were down visiting. The people in picture are myself, Stewart Bofenkamp (1970 class of North Shore), my wife Vicki "Tollefson" Bofenkamp (1969 class of Makoti High), my mom Barbara "Shuler" Bofenkamp (1947 class of Makoti High) and my uncle and Barb's brother Roy Shuler (1945 class of Makoti High)”

Claudette Brandt helped Jill celebrate her birthday on the 14th of Dec. Jill told her mom she had a surprise for her but it wouldn't be ready til 4 p.m.! At 4 p.m. they went to the airport and met Jan Stordahl from Minnesota then went to the Badlands restaurant for supper and were met by Penny and Steven McCormack. Jan told Claudette she had another surprise for her. Back to the airport they went where they met Dean Brandt from Enid, Oklahoma. They came home to Ryder and on Friday they entertained DeWayne Brandt and Amy; Jesse and Emily Berg; and Katie Brandt and friend Scott; and Daryl, Doreen and boys from Kindred. Jan and Dean went back on Sunday. Their flight was suppose to leave at 1 p.m and didn’t leave until 7 p.m. 6 hours late. This made Dean Brandt miss his connecting flight to Oklahoma.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas Eve. We sure did! John, Staci and Johnny came out to go to church and spend the evening. Rick and Levi stopped over to wish us a Merry Christmas.
Our church service was at 4 this year and there were not many in attendance. There were later services in the area.

We had a great time opening gifts and then playing Atari. I found Staci’s Atari Flashback game console that we had given her years ago and it had barely been opened. So being the clever mother that I am, I wrapped it up and re-gifted it to her. She was so excited until she realized that it was the one we had gotten her years ago. Oh well, we all enjoyed competing with each other on it.

Sunday, Christmas Day we awakened to a blizzard and today it is still going on. I had to shovel the sliding door from the inside out so the dogs could get out to do their business. That was fun as a lot of snow managed to get inside too. We have huge drifts all over the place and right in front of the garage door again which would require someone to crawl over or through the drift to get the door open to get the bobcat out! Hopefully by the time you read this, someone has to come to plow our driveway out so Kenny could get to dialysis on Tuesday. Hope the storm is done by then also. Kenny said he saw someone at 5 a.m. Sunday come from Ryder and head down the highway going awfully slow. He thought it was someone headed to work. Wonder if he made it or if he turned around! There was a no travel advised warning and several major roadways are closed.

The Ryder Food Pantry and Lunch Social will resume on Jan. 14th. They will be open on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. Lunch from 11-1 and Food Pantry open from 11-2. Come and enjoy a free lunch and do some visiting!

Ryder News Dec. 15, 2016

Ryder News for Dec. 15, 2016

We are a little short of news for this week! Remember I need your news items so we have a Ryder News Column to read.

Well, after the KX weather person telling us we would only get around an inch of snow Saturday we now have about 4 more inches on the ground. I visited with Staci Sunday evening and she told me that it is really slick around Minot and very little sanding had been done. Well, we have to be in Minot Monday morning for Dr. appointment so hope they take care of it over night. She said she and John had seen numerous accidents in a short period of time on Sunday evening.

Visiting with Santa

Kids working on their craft projects at Santa Day

I attended the functions at the Ryder Community Club/Gym on Saturday as did Staci, John and Johnny. Kenny made it there after dialysis. There were quite a few kids enjoying themselves at the craft tables and Johnny made some cute items to hang on their tree and he also made a reindeer headband to wear. The kids got to sit on Santa’s lap and whisper what they wanted for Christmas and then they each received a little bag of candy. And then it was time for the turkey drawing giveaway. I won a turkey! As a matter of fact, every family that was there received a turkey and the food pantry received the turkeys that weren’t given away.

Due to the snowstorm last week, Kenny didn’t make it to dialysis on Tuesday as we couldn’t see across the yard and there was no travel advised. I had early chemo on Wednesday so we made it in for that but the visibility wasn’t the best. Kenny did manage to get in for dialysis on Thursday. It is starting to look like this is going to actually be a North Dakota winter for a change. I don’t mind the cold but I do hate all this snow!

Ryder News Dec. 8, 2016

Ryder News for Dec. 8, 2016

It looks like the Christmas season has begun at our house. We are working on getting the tree up and some decorations inside the house. I don’t know if Kenny is going to be able to put anything outside this year...the cold weather got here before he got started! I’ve even managed to do some baking (made some banana bread)! We received our first Christmas card on Saturday which reminded me that I have to do that also. We got some Christmas shopping done and now there is the chore of wrapping the gifts. Oh well, Christmas will be here before we know it!

The Makoti Senior Center will serve a catered lutefisk and meatball supper on Wednesday, December 14 at 5:30. They will serve early due to the Plaza School concert. All area seniors are invited and no potluck is needed.

Haylee Rustad, Blake Rustad and Daniel Starks performing at the Dickens Festival in Garrison on Dec. 3.

Haylee Rustad, Blake Rustad and Daniel Starks performed Christmas music on Saturday, December 3 at the Dickens Festival Piccadilly Square in the Garrison City Auditorium. Blake played several Christmas songs on the piano. Daniel singing and playing guitar, joined by Haylee on violin finished out the hour of entertainment.

Daniel Starks will be performing Christmas Music during the Dickens Festival in Garrison this Saturday, December 10, 3:30 p.m. at Fezziwig's.

The Calvary Church Christmas Program is this Sunday, December 11 at 10:30 a.m. The wonderful Christmas message will be shared by children, teens and adults with a variety of music and skits. Everyone is invited!

Muriel Peterson had a surprise in her mailbox Wednesday. She received a book from a past kindergarten student, Alicia Ambers. Alicia has written and had a book published. It is the first in a series called the Halfing series and is titled Revenge.

The Ryder Food Pantry delivered Thanksgiving baskets to over 20 households in the Ryder, Makoti, Plaza and Roseglen areas.

The Ryder Food Pantry will not be open the month of December, because Santa Day and turkey giveaway are on the 2nd weekend in December and Christmas is on the 4th weekend.

The Pantry hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come to the Pantry and from Noon til 1 p.m. have free soup and sandwich and do some visiting.

Thanksgiving Day guests at the Ron Peterson home were Rondi, Steve, Carson and Cole Deaver of Minot.

Kathy Huettl of Max, ND sent me the following:
“I saw in your Ryder News of November 10 that someone was inquiring about Soren Sorensen family and I think I can provide a few more details regarding the family. I am providing this information from the Douglas Reunion Book as the Sorensen family lived southeast of Douglas.
Soren Sorensen, Sr. came to America in 1902 from Biersted, Denmark. He homesteaded 8 ½ miles NW of Garrison in Rosemont Township in 1905. Two years later he married Christine (Sorensen) Sorensen) who came from Alborg, Denmark as a young girl. They were the parents of nine children, Leo, Ruby (Sayler), Chris, Robert, Soren Jr., Alan, Gordon, Harold and Gerry.
Soren Sr. and Christine lived on their homestead in Rosemont Township until 1945 at which time they moved to the Norton-Smith Ranch northwest of Garrison in McGinnis Township. They lived on the ranch in a log cabin built by Tom Norton with logs that were hauled from the Missouri River in the late 1890s.
Soren Sr. died in 1963 and Christine in 1974. They are buried in the Garrison Cemetery.
NOTE:  The book also had some history submitted by son, Leo; Robert and Soren Jr.
Hope this helps the gentlemen doing his ancestry research.”  Kathy.

Dwight Paulson’s new license plate.

Dwight Paulson says “How do you like my new plate!  I had a plate on my last car with USA on it, and I tried to get to use it now but it was expired so I couldn't have it. Gave a little thought and found that Ryder ND was available.  With that number I should be able to remember it even after 73 years. Tomorrow Donna and I will have been married 50 years.”  Happy Anniversary to you two.

Quilting party...see if you can see all 6 quilters peeking out from the quilts.

Sharleen Larson and 5 of her friends got together several weeks ago to hold their annual quilt making party. Sharleen said they made at least 20-25 quilts over the course of several days. When asked what they do with the quilts she said they keep for self, gifts for family etc. A couple were given away for Community service.

Faye and Bud Karna had their Thanksgiving family gathering on Saturday, Nov. 26. Grandma Faye cooked the meat and got the potatoes and dressing done while Kellie and Kyann brought all the other “fun” things to eat. After eating and cleaning up, the girls put up/decorated a Christmas tree for their mother!

Wayne and Carol Jean Hansen celebrated Thanksgiving with the Rockeman family. Elvina Rockeman of Minot hosted. Also attending were Elvina’s sons and their spouses, Karl and Jessica Rockeman of Richardton, Jessica’s sister, Eva, who attends NDSU and Mark and Annette (Hansen) from Donnybrook. Wayne and Carol Jean enjoyed time away from Edgewood Vista and a bit of fresh air!

Celebrating a wonderful Thanksgiving Day at Jody and Peggy Reinisch’s were: Jerome Harstad, Josh Reinisch, Alex and Kelsey DesRoches, Lorn and Corinna DesRoches, Adam DesRoches and Gramma Mary Vaughn.

Kenny and I joined John, Staci and Johnny McGrath at their home for Thanksgiving. They put together a delicious meal of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, cranberries and a relish tray. (What I want to know is why didn’t she cook like this when she was living at home?) Staci and John thought they'd try and get some Christmas shopping out of the way if we would take Johnny home with us. So we did. He was so excited to get to stay, only trouble is...he never wants to go home! He wrote a story about celebrating Thanksgiving and I thought I’d share it with you. He only parted with it with the promise that I would return it to him. Now remember this kid has quite an imagination!

The Way We Celebrated Thanksgiving by Johnny M.
We found a turkey running through the store. That turkey was so hard to catch but we weren’t ready to give up yet! “O turkey” cried a man. The man bought turkey treats. The turkey almost came. Then another man came up and said, “Hey, you need some help?” “Yes” said the man. Then one more man came up and said, “We’ve got the turkey.” Suddenly the turkey jumped out of his hands. The turkey was running through the bakery section. Loaves of french bread were flying through the air. An employee came up and tried to get it but he didn’t. That turkey ran as fast as he could right to the door! Then some dogs chased it away. We tried to catch that turkey but it just kept running. We couldn’t keep that wild turkey, he was just too much trouble. The End.

Dwight Paulson posted a picture from the past on Facebook and I told him I was going to use it in the news column. He said it was of a steak fry at the Paulson house while his folks were out of town on a trip to Alabama and he thought it was taken in the late 50’s or early 60’s.. He said he thought that Rodger Haugen took the picture as he wasn’t in it. Michael Officer, Sonny Olson, Dwight, Roxann Olson, Gary Hovde, Sheryl Erb, Rod Officer are gathered around the kitchen table.

I have some old Roseglen News from years gone by and will include a snippet of the news in my column each week for your memories and enjoyment.

Roseglen News by Mrs. Earl Pederson--June 7, ?
“The Lutheran students Association from MSTC presented a program Sunday evening at Immanuel Lutheran church for the Luther League. Mrs. Ervin Kolden and Mrs. Lloyd Kolden were hostesses for lunch.
Valborg Drever is driving a new car.
Life is not quite the same in this household since the man of the house took sick and we are trying as best we can to get along without him. He’s a patient at Trinity hospital in Minot, ill with hepatitis, which is classified as a “mystery disease” in a recent magazine article. Hepatitis, which is caused by a virus, is incredibly hardy, and recovery from it is slow. Earl has been in the hospital a week today and as yet we do not know how long his stay will be. However we are fortunate to have Marion Franklin here to keep that tractor humming.” (To be continued next week).

Ryder News for Nov. 17, 2016

Don’t forget the Breakfast Benefit for Gorlyn Wohlk on Nov. 20th at the Senior Center in Douglas from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help pay for his medical expenses. He has been diagnosed with cancer.

Food, Fun and Fellowship at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder’s Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner.

Kenny and I had a very enjoyable Pre-Thanksgiving dinner at St. John’s Lutheran church here in Ryder on Sunday. They served turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, cream corn, pickles, buns, variety of desserts, coffee and kool aid. The cooks did a marvelous job!

Dolls made by Denise Johnson for Ryder’s Craft Bazaar.

Horse shoe art crafted by Justin Johnson.

I attended the craft bazaar and turkey drawing in Ryder on Saturday. It seemed that the crowd visiting was a little smaller but there sure were a lot of nice items being offered for sale. There were dolls, jellies, and breads made by Denise Johnson. Justin Johnson’s display featured many items that he had made from horse shoes such as yard ornaments, snowmen, Christmas trees, etc. Pampered Chef had a table, Stephanie Hagen was sewing pillowcases and also refrigerator handle covers. Paulette Petz had a variety of baked goods as did Denae Anderson. Gary Hagen was also selling baked goods and some pictures that he had taken and made into beautiful cards. Several vendors were selling beautiful homemade Christmas crafts. Another vendor was selling hair clips of many different varieties. The Close-Up Kids were in charge of the lunch and they were selling Taco in a Bag, Hot Dogs, Chili, Chili Dogs, bottles of water, a variety of soda and they had one table devoted to baked goods. Lucas Brown was the one in charge of the money box, taking your money and making change. Lorraine Nelson and Wendy Wohlk were in charge of the sign in table (for door prizes) and also  passing out the tickets for the turkey drawing. By the way, I did win a turkey!
There were a lot of turkeys given away, but I never did get an actual count.

The pastor from Ryder’s Calvary Church, Jonathan Starks, had a heart attack on Monday. Luckily his wife Pam got him to the hospital in time and he had two stints put in. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Daniel Starks and Ethan Rogers at MSU Northwest Music Festival.

Daniel Starks of Ryder and Ethan Rogers of North Shore Plaza were participants in the Mixed Choir of the Minot State University Northwest Festival of Music that was held November 4th and 5th. The honor of this musical experience was with a choir of 120 high school participants from North Dakota and Montana who were chosen out of many hundreds of auditions.

Our daughter Staci McGrath was very pleasantly surprised by her hubby John on Friday of last week. He had plotted and schemed with her best friend Reina for months to fly her in to see Staci on her birthday. Well, that day didn’t work out so they just changed the date. Reina lives in Italy and was in Arizona visiting with her family when John flew her in. Staci and Reina became best friends when they were neighbors on MAFB and have been in constant touch since she moved to Italy.

I received notice that a classmate of mine had passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Nov. 9th. Joe Richard (Rick) Haugen of Bismarck, formerly from Parshall, was born to Einar and Priscilla Haugen on March 26,1947. He was married to Ardyce Huus and they have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren. Our sympathy goes out to the family.

Ryder’s Rosehill Cemetery

The Ryder Cemetery has had an update. Just wanted to share a picture with you former Ryder folks. Notice how the evergreens have been trimmed and a new fence added. Surely was needed and deeply appreciated. It looks so nice when you come driving into Ryder on #28 from the north!

Did everyone get to the new Ryder City Hall Building and vote? There were 186 voters on Nov. 8th and that didn’t include early voters and absentee ballots. I was suppose to have had pictures of some first time voters but they were never sent to me.

Howard Arvidson

Here is a picture for the news of Howard Arvidson who died on Oct. 24, 2002. Many remember the Arvidsons so thought they would enjoy seeing his picture.  Sent by Stan Hjelmstad.

Remember Faye Karna sent in obits for Howard Arvidson and Grace Arvidson and asked if anyone had any information about Gordon Arvidson and Aimee Arvidson?
Well, Duane Edwards from Redding, California sent me info on both of them plus he also had some info for Karl Bogh from Denmark which I sent on to him.

JOHN GORDON ARVIDSON
Following info is from the Find-A-Grave Index on Gordon Arvidson. I note
that his first name was John. J. Gordon Arvidson. October 5, 1928 - July 3, 2008
Wife, Helen; daughters: Beth, Mary Ann (Danny), Judy, Chris (Glen); sister, Aimee.
AIMEE MARIE ARVIDSON REED:
Without going into details--- Gordon’s sister Aimee was living in
July 2008. She was listed in the 1940 census as ANNIE and living in
Ryder. Residence (at time of death, June 20, 2010): Sierra Vista, Arizona
Obituary Date: 27 Jun 2010.
Sue: I hope this info is of use to Faye. I got it on Ancestry.com, but have not done my usual research to document the facts. Many times on Ancestry people just copy the info [ as I have done in this case ] and later it is found that there are errors that get repeated with the result that the wrong people become listed as relatives. In this case, I believe that we do have the correct family info.

I sure do appreciate my readers helping out with the research on certain people. It makes Faye’s work so much easier and I get to put it in my column!

I received many comments about my news picture last week of Flo from Progressive Insurance and Jake from State Farm. They thought it was the best one of the Halloween pictures!

Ryder News for Nov. 3, 2016

I hope everyone had a spooktacular Halloween! I plan on having some pictures from the Makoti Halloween Party in my next column.

There will be NO Bingo on Nov. 4th, due to hunting season.

Barbara Keller of Garrison passed away Oct. 21, 2016.  She was born in Ryder to Jerome and Esther (Mahoney) Horning and graduated from Ryder High in 1944. The Flying Farmer doing his thing, soaring above the flames.

John Smith aka the Flying Farmer of Plaza driving his ‘82 Chevy Caprice made his 200 foot jump over a burning mobile home on Saturday and survived! The Flying Farmer is back! I heard he wanted to do it again but we will have to see what his wife has to say about that. He was at our house several months ago and I had asked him if he had ever thought about jumping again. He told me at that time that he had no plans to do it again as it was too hard on his body and he was getting too old. Hmmm...did he lie to me or did I start him thinking about it again!

Cash Petersen with some of his trophies.

2016 was a great racing season for Cash Petersen. He finished 1st in the 4 to 6 year old 50cc North Dakota state series. His dad Tony Petersen said, “I have met some pretty amazing people and developed many friendships. The progression Cash made this year is unexplainable. He has conquered so much in one summer and we can't wait for what comes next. 2017 starts soon with Arena Cross and we are looking forward to a great 2017. I want to tell everyone that helped this year and all his sponsors how much you are appreciated.” Cash is the son of Tony and Alexis Petersen of Ryder.

Election voting this year will be at the new City Hall building on Main St. Voting starts at 7 a.m. and goes til 7 p.m. when the doors will be closed.

We have a story from the Ryder Food Pantry. They had an unofficial opening this Saturday, because of fresh goods that were given to them. So they put up their open sign and called some families too. They had a gentleman come in who had not been able to work because of a hurt foot. He thanked them so much for being there for him, even though he drove himself to their doorstep...he was so happy to have this assistance...they were so happy to be able to help him!!!
Considering it was an unofficial opening, they served out 2 banquet tables full of fresh breads and refrigeration foods that they couldn't keep, plus all the things in the pantry!!!
They served over 36 souls Saturday!!! How amazing is that??!!!
They truly appreciate everyone that supports their effort. They will keep chuggin’ along as long as they have that kind of support!!!!
