Ryder News for Dec. 8, 2016

It looks like the Christmas season has begun at our house. We are working on getting the tree up and some decorations inside the house. I don’t know if Kenny is going to be able to put anything outside this year...the cold weather got here before he got started! I’ve even managed to do some baking (made some banana bread)! We received our first Christmas card on Saturday which reminded me that I have to do that also. We got some Christmas shopping done and now there is the chore of wrapping the gifts. Oh well, Christmas will be here before we know it!

The Makoti Senior Center will serve a catered lutefisk and meatball supper on Wednesday, December 14 at 5:30. They will serve early due to the Plaza School concert. All area seniors are invited and no potluck is needed.

Haylee Rustad, Blake Rustad and Daniel Starks performing at the Dickens Festival in Garrison on Dec. 3.

Haylee Rustad, Blake Rustad and Daniel Starks performed Christmas music on Saturday, December 3 at the Dickens Festival Piccadilly Square in the Garrison City Auditorium. Blake played several Christmas songs on the piano. Daniel singing and playing guitar, joined by Haylee on violin finished out the hour of entertainment.

Daniel Starks will be performing Christmas Music during the Dickens Festival in Garrison this Saturday, December 10, 3:30 p.m. at Fezziwig's.

The Calvary Church Christmas Program is this Sunday, December 11 at 10:30 a.m. The wonderful Christmas message will be shared by children, teens and adults with a variety of music and skits. Everyone is invited!

Muriel Peterson had a surprise in her mailbox Wednesday. She received a book from a past kindergarten student, Alicia Ambers. Alicia has written and had a book published. It is the first in a series called the Halfing series and is titled Revenge.

The Ryder Food Pantry delivered Thanksgiving baskets to over 20 households in the Ryder, Makoti, Plaza and Roseglen areas.

The Ryder Food Pantry will not be open the month of December, because Santa Day and turkey giveaway are on the 2nd weekend in December and Christmas is on the 4th weekend.
But if anyone needs anything please call Kathy-578-5876 and she will make arrangements to get you groceries.
Now that being said...The Ryder Food Pantry with the help of the Ryder Senior Center will be starting their soup and sandwich social again in January! The Ryder Food Pantry (serving Ryder, Makoti, Plaza and Roseglen will be open the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month starting in January...Jan. 14th and January 28th. The Pantry hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come to the Pantry and from Noon til 1 p.m. have free soup and sandwich and do some visiting.

Thanksgiving Day guests at the Ron Peterson home were Rondi, Steve, Carson and Cole Deaver of Minot.

Kathy Huettl of Max, ND sent me the following:
“I saw in your Ryder News of November 10 that someone was inquiring about Soren Sorensen family and I think I can provide a few more details regarding the family. I am providing this information from the Douglas Reunion Book as the Sorensen family lived southeast of Douglas.
Soren Sorensen, Sr. came to America in 1902 from Biersted, Denmark. He homesteaded 8 ½ miles NW of Garrison in Rosemont Township in 1905. Two years later he married Christine (Sorensen) Sorensen) who came from Alborg, Denmark as a young girl. They were the parents of nine children, Leo, Ruby (Sayler), Chris, Robert, Soren Jr., Alan, Gordon, Harold and Gerry.
Soren Sr. and Christine lived on their homestead in Rosemont Township until 1945 at which time they moved to the Norton-Smith Ranch northwest of Garrison in McGinnis Township. They lived on the ranch in a log cabin built by Tom Norton with logs that were hauled from the Missouri River in the late 1890s.
Soren Sr. died in 1963 and Christine in 1974. They are buried in the Garrison Cemetery.
NOTE:  The book also had some history submitted by son, Leo; Robert and Soren Jr.
Hope this helps the gentlemen doing his ancestry research.”  Kathy.

Dwight Paulson’s new license plate.

Dwight Paulson says “How do you like my new plate!  I had a plate on my last car with USA on it, and I tried to get to use it now but it was expired so I couldn't have it. Gave a little thought and found that Ryder ND was available.  With that number I should be able to remember it even after 73 years. Tomorrow Donna and I will have been married 50 years.”  Happy Anniversary to you two.
