Brooklyn Schick
North Shore's Brooklyn Schick wins scholarship: Brooklyn Schick of North Shore High School was named a Real DEAL Scholarship winner by Bank of North Dakota's DEAL Student Loan Program. She will receive a $500 scholarship to attend a North Dakota college and qualifies to be one of 48 applicants to compete for a $3,000 scholarship to be awarded in the spring of 2015. Brooklyn is the daughter of Art and Billie Miller of Ryder. She plans on attending Minot State.

Austin Schenfisch

Austin Schenfisch gave me permission to print his picture with the following information: It was Winterfest week at NSP in Makoti and Thursday's theme was throwback Thursday. Austin wore his dad's basketball jersey from his senior year-1981. The shorts were from their Phy-Ed class (and they were SHORT back then). His mom Lisa still had the tube socks and sweatbands too so his outfit was complete! Austin you look great!

Ryder News Jan. 22, 2015

Mitch and Tarrin Baumgartner along with their kids, Jaelyn, Jazmyn, Jaxsyn and Jamya from Detroit Lakes, MN visited her parents Terry and Jean Kolden over the Christmas holiday. Tarrin sent me a picture of 9 month old Jamya and Grandma and Grandpa’s dog, Wilson.

Faye Karna sent me the following:
Once again we have to take time to “close the books” on another year. I am busy completing different required forms for the Ryder Historical Society so it will remain in the non-profit category. Plus, there are many yearly projects to complete on the local level as an attempt is made to record Ryder history.  One of those is the 2014 binder that includes the obituary list and the Ryder News and other news articles of Ryder people written throughout 2014. That obituary list will be shared here next; but, first I want to tell all those of you who supported the museums throughout the year by visiting the buildings when they were opened, encouraging us few to keep it going, or by giving donations and memorials in honor of family members or friends to help financially how much this is appreciated. We had so hoped to be working on displays, etc. for the new addition by now. But, unfortunately, the contractor we hired did not do an acceptable job on the taping and painting.  So, that needs to be redone as does the floor!

Here are the names I have recorded for 2014. Remember, they do not have to have been former or present Ryder people; but, they are connected to Ryder through marriage, etc. They are: Ray Zahnow, Vanona Hanchett Christiansen, Lora Romsaas Hanchett, Jonathan Friesen, Henry Reinisch, Gary Johnson, Oscar Guttormson, Gary Hovde, Lindsey Anderson, Daniel Guttormson, Rueben Broneske, Betty Christensen, Velma Janke, Eric Sherven, Darrell Johnson, Shirley Peery, Bruce Campbell, Ervin Trontvedt, Ronald Stebleton, Marcella Prom Rubbelke, Jim Erb, Kathleen Hoffman Knuth, Loretta Witt, Ethel Jacobson Nelson, Almira Hoffer, Charlotte Preston Griffen, Virginia Olsen Logan, Katie Reinisch, Mary Neale, Donald Price, Randy Morris, Clarence Kriedeman, Gaylord Christiansen and Marlene Afdahl Borrison.

We received word that Carlyle Skogen (a 1943 Ryder graduate) passed away on Jan. 9th. He is survived by his wife LeAnna; children; Mark (Elaine), Marcella (Wayne) Massi, Kirk (Christine) and Keith. Sisters; Jeanice (George) Officer of Minot, ND, and Jeannette (Russell) Johansen of Minot, ND.

The Makoti Senior Center will have a pork roast supper on Wednesday, February 11 at 6:00 PM.  All area seniors are invited to attend.

That’s it for this week. I will be waiting to hear from more of my readers with their news. Have a great week and enjoy the nice weather, spring is just around the corner, isn’t it?

Ryder News Jan. 15, 2015

Right now, I have very little for news items…I may have to add some of my own or start to make it up. Maybe the weather was just too cold for people to get out and do things so they had nothing to tell me.

I didn’t go to dialysis with Kenny on Thursday during the blizzardy weather. I had awakened at 2:30 that morning and couldn’t go back to sleep so I knew if I had to sit for 3 ½  hours with him I’d more than likely kill somebody…I do need my sleep!

Annette Hansen Rockeman left me a message on Sue’s News, she said, “I especially like the photo of the Landon's that you shared. They sure are looking great. So glad my parents got to attend the party.”

Christmas at the Hal Severance Home: The back row: L to R: Colin holding Madden; Sierra, Gabe, Casey, Jeanna, Hal, Jeff, Clint. Front Row: L to R: Sharrah holding Mayli; Stephanie holding Harrison; Carly holding Abby; Nicole with Nora standing in front of her and Nolan to her left.
Hal and Jeanna Severance had the pleasure of having all their kids and their families celebrate Christmas together on December 26. While they were together they had a family picture taken. They have grown into quite a bunch!

Jim and Doris Ann Zieman stopped in to visit us Sunday afternoon bringing along an apple pie and a birthday gift for me. As a matter of fact, I did receive a lot of nice cards via the mail and also a ton of birthday wishes via Facebook.

It was my birthday on Monday so after my oncologist appointment, Kenny and I celebrated mine and Johnny’s birthday at their home. He turned 6 and I told him I was 7. It is so easy to fool little kids!

For those wishing to send cards of sympathy, etc. to Gayle Wilson Albert, widow of Jerome Albert, her address is: Gayle Albert, 5645 Twin Lake Terrace, Crystal, MN, 55429-2834.

That’s it for the news. Hope I will have more next time so get busy and do something and then tell me about it!! Thanks in advance. By the way, warmer weather is coming so they say!
