Kenny and I got to watch Levi Sprinkle last Tuesday for just a short time. He screamed and cried from the time his dad dropped him off until I had the bright idea of Skyping with Johnny on the Kindle. He wouldn’t even let me take his coat off, wanted no toys, I had to force him to sit by me on the couch so he couldn’t escape out the back door! But...once he got to visiting and watching Johnny, everything was just fine. He even started calling me Grandma and visiting with Kenny. When Rick came to pick him up, he didn’t want to go. Isn’t that just like a kid!

Old Roseglen news by Mrs. Earl Pederson. I don’t know the year:

“March of Dimes party a successful event. Another in the form of a successful March of Dimes fund raising party was brought to a climax Friday evening, Feb. 1st at the Roseglen hall. Favorable weather added much to the enlightment for everyone, even tho’ the thermometer did register a cool 18 below. In spite of that however, the hall was filled to capacity for the Talent Show and the dance which followed.
When everything was added up, the gross results showed some $2,050.00 were taken in. After expenses were paid, the net results amounted to $1764.00. Last year’s totals were some over $1200.00 which everyone thought was terrific, and this brought in even more!”

I will have even more to report on this old fundraiser next week!!

Upcoming Events:

Jan. 29:  Services at Hope Lutheran Church of Makoti at 9 a.m.

Jan. 29: Services at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Roseglen at 10:30 a.m. with communion.

Jan.29: Services at Calvary Church of Ryder at 10:30 a.m.

Feb. 3: Bingo at 7 p.m. at Ryder Community Center/Gym if weather is decent!

Feb. 6: Ryder Senior Citizens with a noon lunch, short business meeting and some fun times. That is if the weather is decent!

I sure am in need of some local news again. It seems that the well is down to a trickle of information and seems soon to go dry! So...send me some news items please and even pictures if you have them!  Have a good week and now your assignment is to go out and make some news!

Ryder News for Jan. 19, 2017

Hiddenwood Winter Fishing Derby.

I see there were a few brave souls that ventured out onto Hiddenwood Lake braving the cold and snow for the Hiddenwood Winter Fishing Derby on Jan. 14th of this year. There were 39 adults and 11 juniors fishing this year. The ice was 2 ½ feet thick and above zero temps and no wind.

And the winners of the Derby were:
In the Adult Northern Class-1st place, Dalton Walsh with his northern weighing 8.40 lbs.: 2nd place for Adult Northern Class was Joe Lautenschlager with his northern weighing 8.15 lbs.: And 3rd place in the Adult Northern class there were two winners, Darwin Van Dyke and Justin Johnson with their northerns weighing 7.70 lbs. Congratulations!

The Adult Perch Class was won by Lacy Grimwood with the perch weighing .10 lbs. Congratulations!

In the Junior Northern Class: 1st Place: Gage Schenfisch with his fish weighing 7.05 lbs. : 2nd Place: Clay Schenfisch with his fish weighing 6.50 lbs.: 3rd Place: Dylan Pank with his fish weighing 5.95 lbs. Congratulations!

In the Junior Perch Class the winner was: Violet Braaflat with her perch weighing .10 lbs. Congratulations!

John and Shirley and Kraig Brandvold, Tom and Linda Madsen, and Joyce and Pat McKinzie were Christmas Eve supper guests of Lee and Julie Brandvold and kids. They had a wonderful prime rib and shrimp scampi supper and a fun time of exchanging gifts and playing some games with the kids, Stetson and Shelsey. Joyce said the blowing snow was really bad when they left the Brandvold place about midnight and they could not see the road at times, going into Ryder. They were so glad to get into town. They were snowed in at Pat’s house on Christmas Day and could not get to Bismarck to have Christmas Day with Pat’s son, Mike and family. Julie brought the kids into town so they could play some card games and have some company for a few hours on Christmas Day. It was such a nasty day, they hated to see them come in but they had a good day after all and it helped pass the time and day. Kids can really help to entertain!

They were not able to get out of Pat’s yard until Tues. A good neighbor up the street, Jodi Reinisch, came with his Payloader and moved some snow for them out of Pat’s driveway so they could get out on Tues. They appreciated it very much and said they may need him again if this weather doesn’t let up.

Kenny and I had a good neighbor from up north, Ross Sherven, come several times to blow us out and push snow for us. It was a little much for our bobcat to handle and we needed a path made to the two propane tanks.

Ted and Kay Hofstad Upgren visited with Faye and Bud Karna in Bismarck.  Kay and Ted are getting ready to go to a warmer climate for several months; so, they decided to visit the Karnas before leaving.  Kay, Bud and Faye all went to Ryder High together and find it fun to get caught up on former classmates and other Ryder people.

The 2016 records are being finalized for the Ryder Historical Society.  Following you will find a list of those whose obituaries have been recorded.  It includes 11 former graduates of Ryder and/or North Shore. If you know of others, please inform the Historical Society.
They are Edna Arneson Fredrick a 1946 graduate;  Loren Quandt; DeLoris Fox Johnson a 1949 graduate; Lois Bradley Nogosek a 1963 graduate; Myron Brandt a 1953 graduate; Keith Kronbach a 1970 graduate; Robert Balucki; Donald Weigel; Charlotte Dyke Butterfield; Lois Brandt McKinzie a1953 graduate; Jennifer Haugen Nicholls daughter to Denise Brandt Haugen and Jeff Haugen; Doris Liffrig wife of Duane Liffrig; Doug Lahti son of Myron & Donna Lahti; Art Bjordahl, Jr.; Marjorie Lewis daughter to Ben and Elsie Mueller Lewis; Judi Weltikol Bradley wife of Alvie; Lilas Wasvick Guttormson wife of Clarence; Darlene Nush Morse; Barbara Horning Keller a 1944 graduate; Robert Morris a 1949 graduate; George Linnertz a 1945 graduate; Mildred Bergeson Peterson wife of Leslie; Pearl Eide Sparavalo a 1936 graduate; Dennis Endreson son of Duane and Pedie; Sheri Nelson Weigel a 1978 North Shore graduate; Donna Betts Paulson wife of Dwight; Jerry Sorenson son to Harold and Ethel Steine Sorenson.

I told you that I would identify all those Larson kids this week that I had the picture of in last week’s paper. Dig out last week’s paper and follow along..  Starting at the Right side, oldest to youngest: Eileen, Richard, Eugene, Joan, Byron, Ronald, Sylvia, Michael, and Linda. The youngest is Nancy and she wasn’t in the picture, either she was napping in house or hadn’t been born yet! Hope most of my readers got the names right and in the correct order.

The Ryder Community Food Pantry will be open Saturday, January 21st, 11a.m. to 1p.m. due to donations of fresh products that need to be given out. The Soup and Sandwich Social will also be at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time and we can get back on schedule with the openings for the food pantry!

Dave and Kathy Kimball met 2 of their kids; Carl and Crystal Cree and their kids Matayah, Avery and Ean; and Amanda and Joe McCallum and their 6 kids; Mackenzie (home from college), Tristan, Kaleb, Autumn, Aspen and Colton at Olive Garden the Saturday before last, so they could have lunch with them all and so Dave could give Joe; his son-in-law, a wood chest that Dave had made for him to keep his military memorabilia in, since he retired from the Air Force. Joe was very surprised and loved all the caring and love that went into building it.

Dave and Kathy were also snowbound at home for four days, due to 4 foot snow drifts on the gravel roads and the county not having time to clean them.  Kathy was a little worried about missing 3 days work and Dave hadn't been able to open the Senior Center for breakfast or to be at the Senior center meeting.
Judy Kimball called Kathy and asked her if she had her bags packed to come live with them in Colorado for the winter! Watch out Dave and Rick, you never know what those 2 are up to!!

I had a very busy few days last week starting on Jan. 6th. I was scheduled to have chemo but when I told the nurse how tired and short of breath I was, she got permission to do blood work on me. It was discovered that my hemoglobin was real low again and I was scheduled that day for 2 units of blood. But there was a snafu with the blood that was sent to the lab and they had to run it several times to get a donor match. So instead of having 2 units of blood, I was only able to receive one that day and scheduled for the next one on Monday, Jan. 9th.
Of course I had all kinds of other medical things scheduled for that Jan. 9th as well starting with a PET scan at 9:30 to check on the cancer. Then I was scheduled for a mammogram at noon and then a visit with primary Dr. at 1 and then finally the blood transfusion at 2. I thought that I would have a chance to eat after PET scan before mammogram. Wrong!! My Dr. called and wanted to know if I could come in around 10:30 as he had a meeting at 1. Yippee. There goes my lunch. I told him about PET Scan but said I would get there as soon as possible afterwards. Luckily, I got in early for scan so was able to get to Dr. all the way across town in time for that appointment. Then we scurried all the way back across town to make the mammogram appointment. Now to eat...by that time we were starving as we hadn’t eaten yet that day. After eating, I called Cancer Care to see if I could get in early and luckily I was able to and had my transfusion early! It’s surprising how a little blood can make you feel so much better. Maybe I should check into becoming a vampire!

Now I have been running a fever and having some pain in my left side kind of by armpit for a while so Kenny thought maybe we should go to ER to have it checked out so Tuesday evening the 10th of Jan. off we go. This time I was out of there in 4 hours, a miracle. I had blood work, an EKG, chest X-Ray and finally a CT scan. They said lungs, heart and blood work were all clear but the CT scan showed that there was something, either a tumor or swollen lymph nodes in the armpit area. Great!
Then on the day of my birthday I woke up looking like I had the mumps..swollen lymph glands on both sides of jaw and neck. Hmmm. Well, since I was scheduled to see cancer Dr. on Friday I just waited to show him. I did get some good news. PET scan showed no additional cancer activity and what is there is under control for the time being and mammogram was all clear. Dr. did decide I should have a biopsy on lymph nodes under arm so will have that shortly. In the meantime I have to be off chemo and aspirin til then. I have my suspicions that by the time they get this biopsy set up, the lymph nodes in the armpit area will be gone. The ones on jawline and neck are almost gone now!

We haven’t had a chance to celebrate either mine or Johnny’s birthday as he has been sick but I think maybe this next week we will all be well enough to celebrate!

I think I will skip the Old Time News for this week as you probably have a headache from reading all this!

Some of the snowmobiles in the Ryder Poker Run on Jan. 7.

There was a snowmobile poker run on Saturday Jan. 7th. Riders started in Ryder and then went to Plaza, Makoti, Douglas and back to Ryder. I managed to snag a picture from Facebook of some of the machines in Ryder.

The children of Arnold and Elizabeth Larson.

I managed to get another picture from Facebook and it is the children of Arnold and Elizabeth Larson. Kenny was able to name them all and also knew that the baby was missing from the picture. Does anyone else want to try and name them in order and then send the answer to me. And just who is the missing baby??

Ryder News Jan. 5, 2017

Ryder News For Jan. 5, 2017

Okay, we do need to have a forceful talk with Mother Nature..This snow has to stop! We have been spoiled for the last few years and we all want to go back to being spoiled again. So if you can find Mother Nature, capture her and hold her hostage until we can all get together and give her a good talking to!

There was no Senior Citizens this Monday, Jan. 2nd as there was a mix-up of some sort and the cook thought it was next week (which it will be now) Jan. 9th! It was probably a good thing anyway as the weather isn’t the best with a storm looming over us just waiting for the wind to pick up and blow all this new light fluffy snow around! And...they are saying another 4 inches to come later today (Monday).

Evelyth Wohlk’s 98th birthday

Evelyth Wohlk celebrated her 98th birthday earlier this week with her family.

Ron and Muriel Peterson and Scott and Kari Mart and kids spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Minot with Steve and Rondi Deaver and kids. Later Christmas Day, the Marts headed out to Bismarck to catch a flight to Florida for their winter vacation.

Ruth Wurtz’s 90th birthday

Christmas Eve was Ruth Wurtz’s 90th birthday. Her family had planned a birthday celebration at the Grand Hotel (International Inn) but due to the weather not all family members could make it but those that did had a great time. They had lunch together and then hurried home due to the weather and impending storm.

Charlotte Smette spent Christmas in Milwaukee with her daughter, Sarah. Her mom was a little worried that she may not make it home before the storm hit but luckily she was aware of the impending storm and was able to change her reservation before the storm hit so at least she didn’t have to spend the night in an airport chair! She made it home safely and on time.

The Christmas supper at Makoti Senior center was a great success in spite of the bitter cold. They served lutefisk, meatballs and all the usual Christmas treats.  There were many kinds of cookies to share and people took food to members who could not make it out. Thanks to all the people who gave their time to make sure everyone had a memorable Christmas dinner.

The Makoti Senior Center will have a soup and sandwich supper on Wed, January 11, 2017 at 6:00 PM. All food is furnished, so no pot luck is needed, but if any of you ladies have homemade pickles or pickled vegetables, they would welcome them.

So...what did all of my readers do for New Year’s Eve? Did you go out and party like in the good old days? Kenny and I did...yeah right...we stayed home and wound up babysitting for Johnny so his mom and dad could go out! They went to Underwood and dropped him off on their way and picked him up on the way back. We would have kept him overnight but with the weather the way it has been, we thought it best that they take him home. He did manage to stay up and awake til they got here around 1:30 a.m. I think we have had him almost every New Year’s Eve since he was born either we went to their home or he came here!

I forgot to put the “Old News” in my column last week so this week I am making sure it goes in. I have heard from my readers that they enjoy this old stuff and recognizing the names from the old days! So here is the next installment…

“Roseglen News Service by Evelyn Lunden.”
“Bernice Peterson and Ruby Fines returned to Minot Saturday having spent Christmas at their parental homes.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Oien and the John Lunden family were guests of Mrs. Carl Hill, Sunday. School reopened in the Roseglen district Monday. Idella Olson, teacher of school No. 2 returned from Fortuna Saturday having spent two weeks with her parents.
Mrs. Carl Larson entertained the following mothers and children Monday afternoon, the occasion being Clarice’s fourth birthday: Mmes. James Drever and Sidney; Oscar Anderson, Phyllis and Verdell; Rueben Barsness and Dale; Erling Kvale and Laura;  Amund Bosmon and Garfield; C. A. Olsen, Wallace, Clarice, and Marcella; Julius Mattson and Miss Evelyn Lunden.”

Upcoming Events:

Jan. 6: NO BINGO due to cold weather!

Jan. 8: Services at  St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder at 9 a.m.

Jan. 8: Services at  Hope Lutheran Church of Makoti at 10:30 a.m.

Jan. 8: Services at Calvary Church of Ryder at 10:30

Jan. 14: Food Pantry and Lunch Social will start again at the Ryder Community Center/Gym. Lunch Social is from 11-1 and the food pantry is open from 11-2.

That’s it for this week. I still need your Christmas and New Year’s news. We need news to keep this column going and a few pictures would be nice as well. I know you all have been doing things, going places, etc. Let’s tell about them as inquiring minds want to know!
