Ryder News Dec 31, 2020

Ryder News for Dec. 31, 2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. May the new year be a whole lot better than the last year for all of us!

Ah, yes...I remember Dec. 31st well. Especially the one in 1971 for that was when my son was born! I was in the Garrison hospital to have him when the hospital caught on fire. My...but that was exciting, the fire was directly under my room window. I was evacuated across the street to the Ken Hopkins home while they got the ambulance ready to transport me to Minot. The ambulance took me to St. Joe’s hospital while my family thought I was going to Trinity. They had a fun time trying to find me. Anyway...I made the headlines in 3 newspapers that year.

Christmas Eve Service at Calvary Church. A different year for traditions new and old.

Pastor Starks said, “202 years ago this very night 'Silent Night' was first performed. I don’t think they could have imagined that two centuries later a congregation of 80 people an ocean away would be gathering and singing that very song but while holding glow sticks and flashing the blinkers of their automobiles!

Merry Christmas from Pastor Starks and Calvary Church."

John, Staci and Johnny came out to my house to spend Christmas Eve and open gifts. First we attended the drive in service at Calvary Church then ate a marvelous supper that I fixed and later opened gifts. It sure was a fun day and evening. I had decided to not go to my regular church Christmas Eve Service due to Covid 19 being so prevalent in our area lately so Staci suggested the drive in service. This was a different kind of service and very enjoyable. We even had glo-sticks to represent the candle light part of the service.

Rick and Levi came over Christmas Day to open their gifts and visit for awhile.

Christmas at the Ron Petersons was celebrated even though they thought Covid/Pneumonia was going to take over. Muriel got out of the hospital in time! Kari Mart and her family brought supper Christmas Eve, and the three families got together at Rondi and Steve Deaver’s in Minot Christmas Day. Kari’s family went home the 26th and Rondi’s family brought birthday supper and cake out to Ron on the 27th. Happy birthday to Ron and Happy Anniversary to Ron and Muriel!

Visitors during the week at the Petersons were Deb Peterson, Curtis and Kiera Peterson, Sandra Peterson as well as the Deaver family.

Muriel Peterson would like to tell everyone how much she appreciated the phone calls, cards, food, flowers and visits when she got home from the hospital.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my readers out there in reader land. I may not have a New Year’s column depending on if anyone sends me anything to write about!

We were sorry to hear of the passing away of Evelyth Wohlk. Evelyth Wohlk, 101, of Garrison, formerly of Ryder, passed away on Dec. 17, 2020 at the Garrison Hospital. She is survived by sons, Delroy Wohlk (Marilyn) of Underwood, Gorlyn Wohlk of Douglas, Lydell (Wendy) of Ryder, 9 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, sister, Madelyn Johnson of California and numerous nieces and nephews. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

Ruth Wurtz turns 94 on Christmas Eve. Due to Covid 19 restrictions where she lives, she isn’t allowed visitors...but she can still receive mail. If you would like to send her a card, her address is:1900 28th St. SW, Apt. 205, Minot, ND 58701.

Ron and Muriel Peterson had Covid 19 and thought they were recovered! Guess not, on Saturday, Dec. 19th Muriel wound up in Trinity’s ER. After being in the ER almost the whole day, she was diagnosed with Covid 19 related pneumonia and has been in the hospital.

Food Boxes prepared for the Dec. 18th drive by pickup at Ryder’s Food Pantry.

The Community Food Pantry was blessed with a pallet of food from Krause Grocery Store Monday!

Krause Grocery is a main supporter of the Food Pantry. Bless them!! The picture above from the Krause donation is what the food boxes looked like for their drive by pick up on December 18th  from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.,

Jody Reinisch saved the day by coming and unloading the pallet to the ground from Amber Ouellette's truck. A shout out to Amber for her truck and help. We could not have done it without the help of our volunteers, Amber, Roxeanne, Dave, PJ, Christa, and Kathy. All sent by our Father!

The Food Pantry now needs donations to restock the shelves!! This pandemic has been a push to keep much needed food available. We also had children's books donated for our boxes by the YWCA for the kids, and blankets donated by the United Way! More Earth Angels who have helped fill our food boxes this month. Praise! Praise!

Judy Kimball, (Richard Kimball's wife), injured her bionic knee when she fell in her home a few weeks ago. Then, even with the leg brace and walker, that knee gave out again! Her Doctor said no more! And sent her to have that knee replacement replaced! Give her a big Get Well! And let Richard do the cooking!!

Winners of the Surprise Christmas Light Contest sponsored by the Old Ryder Jaycees were: 1st place winners, Jody and Peggy Reinisch who won $25; 2nd place winners were Kandis and Tracy Horn who won $15 and the 3rd place winners were Rick and Shelly Sherven who won $10.

Ryder News Dec 17, 2020

Ryder News for Dec. 17, 2020

Harvey Billadeau called me last week from Arizona where he and his wife are wintering. He thanked me for the article that was in an earlier  news column. He said it was 75 degrees there and very dry. He said they hadn’t had any rain there for over 100 days. He also told me that he and his wife both had covid 19 but have pretty much recovered. I guess I neglected to mention in that earlier article that Harvey’s parents, Leon and Lorraine Billadeau were my son, Rick’s  god-parents.

We were sorry to hear that Karen Woolard had passed away in a Minot Health Care Center on Saturday, Dec. 5th. Karen taught high school all around the nation for over 40 years but after falling in love with the community of Makoti when she taught there, she kept it as her home base. She was a teacher at North Shore, White Shield and Plaza while living in Makoti. Her one daughter, Stephanie and husband, David Gregg, live at Red Feather Lakes, CO along with her 2 granddaughters. Our sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

Larry Guttormson, a former 1968 Ryder graduate, passed away on Nov. 22nd at his home in Minot.  He was a son to Clarence and Lilas Guttormson and raised on their farm northeast of Ryder.  His siblings were Roger, David, Mark, Karen and Kristi.  He and wife, Marlene, lived in Minot and had one son, Ryan. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Harley Jones has retired after 33 years with the Navy including 30 years with Texaco and most recently 18 years with Sample Express. He and Bonnie live in Georgia and have 2 grown children and 1 grandchild.  His parents were Harley and Florence Jones and they had a farm southwest of Ryder. That is where Harley and his 3 siblings, William, Marion and Corwin, were raised. Harley graduated from Ryder High in 1962 with classmates Byron Larson, Bernard Mahoney (deceased), Kenny Bradley (deceased), Rose Dokken, Michael Officer (deceased), Elaine Afdahl, Teddy Dustin, Gary Lahti (deceased) Faye Karna, Judy Liffrig (deceased), and Yvonne Peterson (deceased).

I had visitors last Tuesday afternoon. Don and Karen Bradley, Doris Ann Zieman and Lorraine Nelson came out from Minot to see my new home. It was fun to entertain them in my new place!

My son, Rick, keeps bringing me stuff to eat. Such a great guy! This last item was a can of peanuts with peanut brittle, yogurt covered raisins, pretzels and cashews. I’m still eating it and it’s yummy. He’s bringing me spaghetti tonight.

Would you believe that I actually have my Christmas letter written, cards ready to go, house decorated, presents bought and wrapped and I have this all pretty much under control for a change as compared to last year!!
