Ryder News for Nov. 28, 2019

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and that my text messages and emails will overflow with your Thanksgiving news!!

Well, we had a few answers to last week’s Mystery Photo. Marlys Rodahl and Sonja Kline both knew that it was Stan Hjelmstad. His real first name is Duane and he was called Dewey while in Ryder High and around town.  His parents were Olaf and Augusta Hofstad Hjelmstad. He graduated from Ryder High in 1948 and then entered the US Navy for 4 years.
I’m sure there would have been more answers but many of my readers get their paper later as they live out of state. I’ll probably hear from them next week!

The Leifson family
The three people in the above picture used to live on a farm north of Ryder and their parents were Norman (Bob) and Ella Guttormson Leifson. They are Lois (Kremer), Gary and Kathy (Escarcega). They had a brother, LeRoy and a sister, Beverly.  Gary lives in Washington while Lois and Kathy live in California. Many readers will remember them from school at Ryder. It is always fun to reconnect with such people through Facebook and we are so glad they let this be shared. Faye Karna shared this with me for my news column.

Since my news had to go in early this week, this is all the news that I have. Please send your news to me via text message at 701-720-4297 or email sbradley@restel.com.

Ryder News for Nov. 21, 2019

I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving as you probably won’t get another Ryder News column until after Thanksgiving. Eat lots of turkey and get stuffed, have some pie too. We have lots of time to diet before it’s time to eat again at Christmas!

Mystery Photo

Yay...we have another mystery photo...Any of you readers remember this former Ryder guy?  He is pictured here with his only daughter. Call me at 701-720-4297 or text me at the same number with your answer.

Mini Bazaar shoppers

Well, Saturday the 16th was a fun day for people in Ryder. There was a Family Fun Day at the Ryder Community Center with games and bouncy houses for the kids. There were 30 turkeys given away at 3 p.m.  My brother was the first one to win a turkey and I just had to say, “Hmmm..a turkey for a turkey!” He wasn’t too impressed with my statement but his wife sure thought it was funny. They also sold cider, coffee, cookies and donuts. The kids had a fun time with the games and bouncy houses as did the adults with lots of visiting.
Another fun time for Ryder people on the same day was the Mini Bazaar at the Senior Center with 11 vendors selling their wares. Avon, Jewelry and tree ornaments, quilts, jellies, baked goods, pickles, salsa, canvas paintings, fishing lures, wreaths and home decor, metal art, Christmas wrap, bows and a variety of Santa's, tumblers, hot packs, cocoa mix, magnets, woodworking items, dish towels and pot holders were some of the treasures you could find that day! A lunch of sloppy joe sandwich, chips, pickles and pop or coffee was also sold. A steady stream of people had a fun time visiting, shopping and eating!

Karen Holt from Watford City visited at the Ron Peterson home last week. Karen and her brother Keith were in school in Harvey when Muriel taught there. When Muriel was a little girl, their mother was her babysitter and then Muriel taught her kids in Harvey. Arden Olson, Karen and Keith’s father, passed away last week and Ron and Muriel went to the service at the Vet’s Cemetery in Mandan on Wednesday.

Ron and Muriel Peterson visited at the Marvin and Connie Allard home in rural Minot. Also there helping Connie celebrate her birthday were her sister, Adriene Miller and her sister-in-law Marlys Sundbakken both of Minot.

Kallie and Kirby DesRoches spent the weekend with Gramma and Grampa Reinisch while Kelsey and Alex went to Minneapolis for a Timberwolves Game and Denver Broncos game.  I don't know which had the most FUN!!!

Faye Karna spent last Saturday helping celebrate their oldest grandchild's 18th birthday. Keaton Erhardt is about ready to graduate from high school which is hard for Grannie Faye to believe. She had to help celebrate this year as he may not be around on that day next year as he plans to attend college in SD.

Charlee Schenfisch with her 5x5 mule deer.
Charlee Schenfisch managed to get her first deer, a 5x5 mule deer. Charlee is the daughter of Rick and Shawna Schenfisch. Congratulations Charlee!

Ryder News for Nov. 14, 2019

Shelsey Brandvold’s first deer.

Shelsey Brandvold had a good day hunting with her dad Lee. Weight 142#  4X5  first deer was a success!  Now she goes back to bow hunting.

From what I have been hearing, it seems like quite a few in the area have gotten their deer altho no one has sent me any pictures or info about them. Come on all you hunters, get some pictures and info to me so I can make you famous in my news column!

St. John’s Lutheran Church put on a delicious Pre-Thanksgiving meal on Sunday. The men did the fixin’ and it was really great seeing all of the guys in the kitchen, dishing up the food and washing the dishes! The meal consisted of roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, stuffing, coleslaw and dessert. There weren't as many in attendance as there could have been. I guess several of the families were out deer hunting. But the ones that missed it sure did miss out on a great “free” meal.

I guess winter has made an early appearance in our area and since we didn’t really have a summer or fall, it is going to  be a long while until we can all warm up again and turn the furnaces off!

Well, that looks like all the news that I have for this time. They say, “No news is good news” but not in this case. If I don’t have more news items, all I will be putting in this column will be the Upcoming Events!! So send me some news!

Upcoming Events:

Nov. 16--1 p.m.-3 p.m. Family Day and Turkey Drawing (3 p.m.) at the Ryder Community Center (old school gym).

Nov.17--9:15 a.m. Sunday School at Calvary Church in Ryder for preschool through adult.

Ryder News Nov 7, 2019

Ryder News for Nov. 7, 2019

The McLean County Independent didn’t reach very many homes around here as the paper seems to have gotten lost, so a lot of my upcoming events were over with before anyone received their paper! We finally got our Garrison paper here in Ryder on Monday, Nov. 4th.

Levi Sprinkle dressed as a zombie for Halloween.

Johnny McGrath dressed as Jonah from SuperStore for Halloween.

I didn’t have very many trick or treaters at my house Halloween, there were only a total of 5 at my door to scare me and get some treats! That’s about par for the kids around here. Levi Sprinkle was all decked out as a zombie. His mom did a real good job with the makeup. Johnny McGrath was dressed as Jonah from the TV show SuperStore and his mom made his outfit.  That means lots of candy left for me or whoever might stop by. Peggy Reinisch said she had 16 kids at her house.

Floyd Knodel sent me a message and he said, “I remember Halloween of 1968 when a large (20) group of high school boys had to be confronted by city parents.  There was a huge amount of materials thrown into city streets making them almost impassable.  Jody Reinisch and I watched from his parent's backyard as city elders challenged the group around 9 p.m.  It was a wild Halloween!”

I’ve kinda been avoiding gatherings of people as I’m currently having radiation treatments again and I really don’t want to get sick and miss any of them.

I’m sure not impressed with the weather and the snow covered and icy roads, especially since I have to go in every day for these radiation treatments. My son Rick volunteered to drive me over Monday as I didn’t know how bad the roads would be after the snowfall Sunday. Highway 28 wasn’t that great and neither was Highway 23 until we got past the Rice Lake Curve.

St. John’s Lutheran Church here in Ryder is hosting a free Pre-Thanksgiving dinner on November 10th starting at 11:30 until 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Come, eat and visit with your friends!

Anyone that bought cookie dough and other frozen goodies from the North Shore Plaza school kids fundraiser, the products should be here on Nov. 7th so be watching for them.

There will be a Veteran’s Day Program on Nov. 8th starting at 1:30 p.m. at the North Shore-Plaza school. All area vets, past and present are invited to attend. There will be a special speaker, Color Guard out of Minot and every classroom has a special presentation. There will be coffee and cookies afterwards. Everyone is invited to attend.
