Wayne and Carol Jean Hansen family L-R: Annette Rockeman, Jon Hansen, Ardyce Huber and Jay Hansen

Wayne Hansen 90th birthday

Wayne Hansen celebrated his 90th birthday one day early on Sunday, Dec. 17.   There was a family party at the Bistro in Edgewood Vista where Wayne and Carol Jean reside. Nieces, nephews, cousins, kids and grandkids from the area and as far away as Fertile, Minnesota helped Wayne celebrate. Wayne was born on the family farm in Blue Hill Township and lived on that farm until he and Carol Jean moved to Edgewood Vista a few years ago. It was a busy weekend for Wayne & Carol Jean as they had an early family Christmas on Saturday. Most of their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids were able to be a part of that as well.

Kenny, Staci and Johnny came out to spend Christmas Eve with me. We were all going to go to church but Kenny’s feet hurt so bad that he didn’t think he could even walk into the church. Johnny has a terrible cold and coughs all the time and me with my head injury, we just didn’t feel we could go.
I spent Christmas day with Rick, Shawna and family and that was fun. Levi is such a little character.

Speaking of head injuries, the heel of my snowboot caught on the top step of our 4 steps outside. I was carrying a big box full of gifts at the time. So down I went. Hit the back of my head on the cement, blood all over me, cement and the gifts. Got gifts picked up and went into the house to see where all the blood was coming from. I had quite a gash on the back of my head which required 3 staples at the emergency room. I am just thankful that I didn't break any bones.

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Ryder News for Dec. 21, 2017

Merry Christmas to everyone. I hope all your Christmas wishes and dreams come true.

Kenny is back at our daughter’s home after his stay in the hospital. I guess the only thing we can figure out that caused his hospital stay and weakness was missing dialysis on the Tuesday that they had the water main break in Minot. He did have dialysis on that Saturday but then went from Saturday until Thursday without dialysis and that really messed his system up. Thank goodness he is out of the hospital and on the mend.

I’ve enjoyed watching Levi several days this last week. He is so cute and so much fun with some of his grown up sayings. Then not to exclude Johnny, he came home with me on Friday and spent the night and all day Saturday then went home that evening over his protests. It’s such fun being a grandma and sending the kids home at the end of the day!!

Visiting with Santa (didn’t get their names)
I went to Santa Day with Johnny and he took part in the craft making, bringing home many items to put on his Christmas tree (snowflakes) or to wear such as a antler headband. Rick and Shawna brought Levi but he only made one craft item and that was the antler headband. Staci came a while later and Levi won a turkey and Johnny won a turkey and I even won a turkey!

Levi Sprinkle sitting on Mom’s lap visiting with Santa
Johnny sat on Santa’s lap and told what he wanted for Christmas: books, Pokemon cards and several other things. Levi wouldn’t sit on Santa’s lap but he did sit on Mom’s lap while she was sitting on Santa’s lap. He said he wanted trains for Christmas! Oh well, maybe next year he will be brave enough to do it by himself.

The Starks family visiting with Santa
The Starks family were all certainly brave enough to visit with Santa, Pastor Jonathan standing on one side of Santa and Pam standing on the other side with Daniel on Santa’s lap.

The Ryder Community Santa Day and Turkey giveaway was a huge success!!  They appreciate your support of the Ryder Community Center!

Ean Cree (5yrs) asked his Grandma (Kathy Kimball) who takes Santa to his home, so Grandma introduced him to Brenda Novodvorsky and Brenda told Ean that she would drive Santa home, since there wasn't any snow. Ean said, “That can't be Santa, he has on jeans”. Grandma Kathy told Ean he only wore his red pants on Christmas Eve. Then Brenda said she would drive Santa to the North Pole and Ean said, “Whoa, that's gonna be a loonnngg drive”. Grandma told him Santa would probably use his magic so it wouldn't take so long...Grandma says, “Wwhhheeewwww....”

The Ryder Community Food Pantry will be open December 23rd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We appreciate you bearing with us during the Christmas season. We WILL be on call for your food needs. Please call 701-578-5876 for Kathy Kimball. Merry Christmas.

Calvary Church Christmas Program

Calvary Church Christmas Program
Calvary Church had their Christmas Program on Sunday, December 17.  They put on A New Nativity Play for Kids called “WOW”.  Produced by Pam Starks and Jenn Rockwell.  Shelsey Brandvold was the Angel, with Blake Rustad being the narrator.  Mary was played by Ella Sherven and Carson Rockwell was Joseph.  Sheperds were Devan and Dillion Rasmussen.  Isaac Sherven, Lainey Rockwell and Stetson Brandvold were the Wisemen and the three Angels were played by Raelyn Williams, Alivia Sherven and Dannika Rasmussen.  The children sang Away in the Manger, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, We Three Kings and Joy to the World.  It was so fun to watch the kids as they all knew their parts and sang beautifully.  What a true meaning of Christmas!

There were special solo music selections from Haylee Rustad on her violin.   Daniel Starks on his Guitar and Blake Rustad playing piano.  So fun to hear them play.

The Upper Room Teens and Leaders put on a skit called “Shine On”.  Those involved were Jason Brown, Josiah Brown, Morgan Johansen, Lora Rockwell, Daniel Starks, Garrett Williams, Trent Williams, Nathanael Brown, Karley and Allen Porter, and Pastor Starks.  Laughs were had by all as they were all a different color light bulb.

Just a remember of the Worship Service at Calvary Church on Christmas Eve will be at 10:30 am with a Candlelight Service at 5:00 pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Ryder News for Dec. 14, 2017

Kenny Bradley (my hubby) has been in the hospital since Thursday morning. He didn't feel well that morning after getting ready for dialysis. He got so weak that he couldn’t stand or walk and Staci finally wound up calling an ambulance for him and he was taken to the ER and later admitted to ICU. He is finally on the 4th floor at Trinity. We are still not sure what exactly is wrong with him. He just doesn’t feel good. He had a CT scan today (Sunday) looking to see why he has such stomach pain all the time. Prayers would be appreciated.

There will be NO Dec. 16th Saturday evening church services at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder.

Don Alderman with his deer
Troy Alderman wasn’t sure what to buy his dad Don Alderman last summer for his birthday. He remembered him saying he’d like to hunt in his home state of Wisconsin one more time. So Troy bought him a non-resident deer license. Some good friends of Troy’s near the Dells invited them to hunt their property. So after a 55 year absence Don Alderman crossed this off his wish list, and he did it with a muzzleloader which he had never shot before and of course he got his deer! Troy wasn’t sure who was more excited, his dad or him. Troy said, “I appreciate Joe and Renee Bokota and their son Joseph for helping me with this.” It’s something neither Don nor Troy will soon forget.
Of course, Elaine got to go along also. The first evening she and daughter in law Georgie and granddaughter Grace stayed at one of the hotels in the Dells, it was off season so the price was dirt cheap. Then they went back to Troy’s house in Camanche since it’s only a 3 hour drive.

Santa Day in Ryder will be Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at the Ryder Community Center/Gym. There will be Kids Crafts at 1:30 and Santa will show up around 2 p.m. and the turkey drawing will be at 3 p.m.

Happy Birthday to Wayne Hanson whose 90th birthday is Monday Dec. 18.

Ryder News Dec 7, 2017

Ryder News for Dec. 7, 2017

First of all, I must apologize for putting the date of bingo wrong in my Upcoming Events. My mind tends to space stuff out once in awhile, must be my age, after all I am pushing 40!

They say, “No News Is Good News” but not in this case! If I don’t start getting news from my readers, there isn’t going to be a Ryder News column anymore!

Knocking down Ryder’s old Firehall

Burning what’s left of Firehall

Last week the city decided to knock down and burn the old Ryder Firehall. The Ryder Creamery used to be on the south side of the building but they tore that down about 15 years ago. They tore down this building the end of November as the cement in the walls was starting to crumble and deteriorate which made it dangerous.

Daniel Starks
Daniel Starks will be in concert Saturday, December 9 at Northland Harvest Church in Minot. The evening is called “A Daniel Starks Christmas” and will begin with coffee, cookies and cider at 6:30 p.m. The concert will follow at 7 p.m. A free will offering will be received to support Rock the Leaves and the Greater Minot Youth Concert Association (GMYCA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring life changing musical experiences to Minot and Western ND. All are invited to come and enjoy a great musical evening and Christmas celebration!

There will be a First Responders Appreciation Supper on Dec. 10, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. at the NSP School.  Join us in thanking our community’s first responders.
Soups, chili and sandwiches to be served. Free will donation, with all monies going back to the squads. There will also be a silent auction hosted by the Mountrail Pioneers 4-H.

Santa Day in Ryder will be Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at the Ryder Community Center/Gym. There will be Kids Crafts at 1:30 and Santa will show up around 2 p.m. and the turkey drawing will be at 3 p.m.

The Calvary Church Christmas program will be on Sunday, December 17 at 10:30 a.m. This service will include music and drama from all ages, preschool to adult. Everyone is invited!

Dave and Kathy Kimball spent Thanksgiving in Colorado with their family, Richard and Judy, their kids: Chris, Adam, Jenn, Ethan, Bailey, Lorie, Tanner, Terri, Daniel, Janice and Brian, their kids: Michelle, Todd, Amanda, Brett, Erin, Judy’s sister and her family from Nebraska: Carol and Ron Jensen: their daughter Cathy, Abe, Courtney.  They had a great time visiting and of course, eating!!

Next Bingo is January 5th at 7 p.m. at the Ryder Community Center. The BIG POT has not gone out and is now up to $561.00.

Christmas music is playing, Christmas lights are twinkling and I am surrounded by wrapping paper, name tags, scotch tape, a pen that gets lost many times, a paper cutter (neat little gadget), bows, and of course gifts to be wrapped. Help!
