Ryder News Apr. 28, 2016

Ryder News for April 28, 2016

We had rain all day and most of the night beginning Sunday morning with rain, thunder, lightning and hail and lots of wind! According to our rain gauge Monday morning we received 1.20 but judging from the puddles out there…I think the wind kept a lot of it from going into the gauge!

The American Legion Auxiliary in Makoti has awarded a full scholarship to International Music Camp to Daniel Starks. He plans to go this summer for a week of intensive study. Congratulations to Daniel.

Were there any other local people who ran this year’s Boston Marathon? Lynae Hanson Lardy ran and finished it for her second time which is quite an accomplishment. Lynae is the daughter of Marcy and Kermit Hanson and lives at Fargo.

Memorial Day and services will soon be here. More Veterans’ pictures have been added to the binder at the Ryder Museum. These are usually displayed that day; so, it would be great to get more of our local vets pictures added before then.

Obituaries are continuously added to the Ryder Historical Society’s binders. A former Ryder resident, Marlys Nelson Rodahl, just sent an interesting one on Sister DeLourdes. She was the former Leona Magyar. She was born in Jackson, MN in 1905 and moved with her family to Ryder in 1916. From there the family moved to Minot in 1922. The Magyar name was an early Ryder name. Do any of you readers recall any facts about the family? If so you can contact Faye Karna at 701-758-2527 or email at fkarna@restel.net with the information.

DelRay and Terry Johanson were out to Montana for a Knutson wedding over the week-end.

More information has been submitted about the Kotaska family. See if any of it helps you to recall more. Their daughter, Darlene, was in the class of 1967; but, they moved before then. Their older daughter, Deloris, graduated from the 8th grade while at Ryder and was 2 years older than Darlene. So wouldn’t that have put Deloris in the class of 1961? It is recalled that their dad’s name was possibly Elmer.  Do any of you recall an Elmer Kotaska? Any information would be appreciated and once again you may contact Faye Karna at 701-758-2527 or email at fkarna@restel.net.

Leifson ladies…L-R: Lois Leifson Kramer, Kathy Leifson, Lois’s daughter (no name given).   Front: Ella Leifson
I’ve included a recent picture of 3 gals that used to live north of Ryder.
They are Lois Leifson Kramer standing beside her younger sister, Kathy Leifson, while their mom, Ella Leifson, is seated in front. The gal to the farthest right is Lois’s daughter, who, of course, never lived in ND. They were members of the Ella and Bob Leifson family and their other siblings were Beverly and Gary. Kathy and Gary would have been members of the 1964 class, while Beverly would have been with the 1969 class. Kathy did not attend Ryder High as the family moved, and it is not known where she lives at this writing. Lois lives in CA while Beverly and Gary live in the state of WA.

Bud and Faye Karna were busy with Kyann’s 3 children this past week-end.
Kyann had to work on Saturday and the kids didn’t have school on Friday; so, they decided a “stay at the farm” was appropriate as they had not been up here for “at least” 5 months they told Gramps and Grandma!

The Max Preschool Program will be on Thursday, April 28 at 10:00 AM in the Max Civic Center. Those from Ryder that will be in the program are Raegan Albert and Ethan Hagen.

Upcoming Events:

May 1: St. John’s WELCA annual Mother’s Day Luncheon at St. John’s church in Ryder at 1 p.m. Bring your family or a friend!

May 3: Easton B. Memorial Blood Drive at the Ryder Community Center/Gym from 1-6 p.m. Call Amber for an appointment at 701-720-0864.

May 14: Free soup and sandwich lunch at the Ryder Community Club/Gym starting at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

May 28: Free soup and sandwich lunch at the Ryder Community Club/Gym starting at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

That’s it for this week…keep the news coming and I will keep writing it! Stay dry and I will see you next time!

Congratulations to Kelly Schmidt and Terese Skjordal. They were married on March 22nd of this year on Kaanapali Beach in Maui, Hawaii. They will make their home in Kenmare where he works for Gooseneck Implement as a service clerk and she is a 5th grade teacher.

I received word from Marlys Rodahl that DeLoris (Dolly) Fox Johnson passed away Feb. 18th in Spokane, Washington at the age of 84. Her parents were Alma and Ira Fox. She grew up in Ryder until the family moved to Minot in the 1940’s. She had 2 brothers, LeRoy and Gaylord, both deceased and a sister Sandra who lives in Washington. She also has 2 daughters who live in Washington. Our sympathy goes out to the family.

Mark Guttormson sent me the following message on the Ryder News website. “Thank you Sue for doing this. I can't help but smile, as I see those familiar names and pictures you post. You are appreciated!”

We found out Saturday that my younger cousin Darren Beal from Washington was killed in a car accident Friday night. His parents were Hobart and Ellen (Baldwin) Beal, both deceased. He has 1 brother, Brian in California and 2 sisters, Sandra Holland and Cheryl Beal both of Washington.

Ryder News Apr. 14, 2016

Ryder News for April 14, 2016

Well, how did my April fool’s joke go over? I had some fantastic feedback and all good. I fooled a lot of my readers and they were glad when they read to the end of the news and saw that I wasn’t really quitting!

Ryder Senior Center featuring new flooring and also wainscoting on front of counter.

I have a few pictures to share this week. Kenny and I went to the Sr. Citizens Monday evening and enjoyed their evening meal. While I was there I took a picture of the wainscoting that David Kimball had put on the front of the counter. He had removed the old outdated carpeting that was on it. He also redid the floor in the front part of the Center. He removed the old carpeting and replaced it with wood laminate flooring. It all looks great as you can see in the picture.

Work is progressing on Ryder’s city auditor’s building on Main St.

The city auditor’s building is coming along on Main St. The footings are poured and I will keep taking pictures as the work progresses and then the Mayor can cut the ribbon and dedicate the building! I wonder if they do that in Ryder. Oh well, if not, they can always start!

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 3rd as that is when the Easton B. Memorial Blood Drive will take place. It will be held at the Ryder Community Center/Gym from 1-6 p.m. Call Amber for an appointment at 701-720-0864. Please bring your photo ID and donor card. There is a free cholesterol testing with every donation.

Evan Michael Larson, son of Seth and Brittany Larson.

Congratulations to Seth and Brittany Larson on the birth of their son, Evan Michael. Evan was born on March 24th and weighed in at 8 lbs. 7 oz. and was 21 in. long. Grandparents are Sheldon and Lisa Oster and Galen and Lynell Larson. Great grandparents are Mike and Ann Schiele and Derald and Beverly Larson.

There will be a baby shower for Evan Michael Larson, son of Seth and Brittany Larson, on Sunday, April 24th at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ryder.

Ron and Muriel Peterson entertained the following for Easter: Mildred Peterson; Judy Deaver; Rondi, Steve, Carson and Cole Deaver all from Minot; and Kari, Scott, Ana and Tate Mart from La Moure.

Does any reader remember the Kotaska family that used to live in Ryder? They had a daughter named Darlene. Any information that you have would be added to museum files. You may contact Faye Karna at 758-2527.

Some neighbors who helped Kevin Hanson celebrate his 50th birthday on April 6th were Lane and Sherman Peterson, Paul Brandvold and Faye and Bud Karna along with Kevin’s folks, Marcy and Kermit. Wyatt, Kevin’s son, was present along with his friend, Blaine Folden. Marcy made a yummy German Chocolate cake.

Ryder News Apr. 7, 2016

Ryder News for April 7, 2016

Well let’s get this out of the way for starters before I start the news. This will be my last column…I am officially retiring.

Next…just in case anyone was disappointed that there were no upcoming events in last week’s column, I sent it in but it never made it into the news. Not my fault!!

The spaghetti supper that was sponsored by the Ryder Community Club and held on April 1st was a HUGE success with over $1000 raised to improve and spruce up the playground!

Bingo was held following the spaghetti supper and they also had a large crowd. I actually won $60 for a change. I usually donate!

Cooking at Breakfast Benefit for Ross Sherven: L to R…Craig Johansen, Wes Sherven, Galen Larson.
The next big function that I attended was the Breakfast Benefit for Ross Sherven to cover his medical expenses. This was put on by the Old Ryder Jaycees.
Kenny wasn’t feeling well so I hooked a ride with my brother, Dick Ludwig.
Wow…what a crowd…they must have served well into the hundreds of people. All area towns were well represented. We were all served pancakes, sausages, eggs, biscuits and gravy along with juice and coffee and you could go back for more if you desired.

Part of the large crowd that attended the Breakfast Benefit.

Guests at the home of Lorraine Forsman of Roseglen for Easter were: Sara Forsman and her son Alex Dschaak of Watford City; great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Declan Linseth of Spearfish, SD; granddaughter, Michelle and Nate Goulette of Minot and Nate’s mother Ginger Goulette of Minot.

Easter Sunday guests at the Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad home of Garrison were Kyle and Jenny (Blowers/Johnson) Brossart and Kylie Johnson; Wil and Cindy (Olson) Oberdick, Henry and Lucy; Steven Olson and Joelle Forschen all of Minot; Karen and Edwin Olson of Douglas and Shawn and Pam Brooks of Surrey.

The Ryder Food Pantry gave out food baskets to feed 16 adults and 24 kids for Easter dinner. Kathy Kimball informed me that they now need more money or food donations as those food baskets rather depleted their inventory.

The new floor is down at the Sr. Center and it looks great. David Kimball was the fellow that did the work. Our town is lucky to have a guy like him to cook at the Sr. Center and to also cook at some of the different functions that we have going on around town. We are also lucky to have his wife Kathy as she is an important part of the community as well. Kathy runs the Ryder Food Pantry and makes the soup and sandwiches for the free lunches at the Ryder Community Club/Gym every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Kathy also works at bingo, sometimes calling and she is the treasurer of the Community Club.

The Makoti American Legion Auxiliary will have a meeting on Monday, April 11 at the senior center at 7:00 PM. All Auxiliary members are asked to attend, since we have the Music Camp scholarship winner to decide and a new president will be installed.

The Makoti Senior Center will have a chicken supper on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:00 PM. The chicken will be provided and pot luck for the rest. Our new president Mike Larson, will preside over his first meeting, so come out and welcome him.

Pat and Joyce McKinzie were Easter dinner guests of Lee and Julie Brandvold and kids! They said it was fun to watch the kids to see what all they got in their Easter Egg Hunt and how excited they were about what was in their Easter Baskets. Joyce said it was a wonderful meal and a good day of visiting.

Don and Ardis Morris 70th wedding anniversary.

Celebrating 70 years of marriage with Don and Ardys Morris in their Mesa home on the 26th were Sandra and Leroy Peterson from Ryder; Steve and Marge Morris of Lake Charles, LA and their two daughters Shannon Guess and Jennifer Andrews of Dallas. Besides friends in the area, relatives included Julie Hill of Grand Forks, Tim and Darlene Hill of Bismarck. Don's cousin Marie and Don Richardson of Minot also attended as well as Deb and Danny Skarsgard. A good time was had by all. Don and Ardys will be returning to ND on the 31st.

Continuing the Basic Rules for Clotheslines that I shared last week:

7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle.

8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... Clothes would "freeze-dry."

9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!

10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.

11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed. IRONED??!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!

12. Long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty.

Oh yes, I remember all of these rules and I bet a lot of my older readers do too!

Oh by the way…the statement I made about this being my last column…APRIL FOOL’S. I know it is a late April Fool’s but I just had to do it! I am not quitting. But…you really need to get some news to me or I seriously will make things up and then you can guess if they are true.

Speaking of April fools…Staci got me and Kenny real good when she gave us a pan of “brownies” the night of bingo. I opened the tin foil and there they were…brown E’s that she had cut up and put in the pan. I also was able to trick Kenny that day by exclaiming that there was a moose south of the house…of course I faked it pretty good by rushing to get my camera!

Upcoming Events:

April 9: Wedding shower for Tiffany Fjeldahl, bride-to-be of Ryan Schneider, on Saturday April 9, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Roseglen.

April 9: Soup and sandwich at the Ryder Community Club/Gym serving from 11-3.

April 10: Church services at Hope Lutheran of Makoti at 8 a.m.—St. John’s of Ryder at 9:30 a.m.—Immanuel of Roseglen at 11 a.m.—Calvary of Ryder at 10:30 a.m. with Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.

Well, that’s it for this week and I WILL be back next week. Have a good week and stay safe.
