Ryder News for Oct. 29, 2015

    BOO---HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

I can’t believe it will be Halloween in just a few more days. Boy oh boy, the time sure is flying and ugh---winter will be here before we know it!

If you are looking to have a fun, safe place for your little ones to spend Halloween evening The Makoti American Legion Auxiliary will be holding their annual Halloween party on Saturday, October 31st from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Legion Hall. There will be games, treats, prizes and a hot dog snack. Donations to the cake walk are welcome and if you call Wanda at 726-5737 we will pick up your treat. All area children 6th grade and under are invited and feel free to bring grandparents and parents.

We had pea soup fog this morning (Monday) and I just saw on the KMOT website that Highway 83 south of Minot was temporarily closed this morning due to an accident involving multi vehicles and an anhydrous ammonia tanker. Luckily the tanker was empty! They are saying that one person has died and many others were injured! Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved.

Elinor Kronbach West and her sister Marilyn Kletzien celebrating Elinor’s 90th birthday.

Spending two weeks visiting with her sister Elinor Kronbach West were her sister Marilyn and husband Warren Kletzien. They helped her celebrate her 90th birthday. Elinor said Marilyn did all the cooking with a little help from Elinor and Warren. She said Warren took her car to the shop for some much needed work…mufflers, tailpipes, etc. He even washed, waxed and polished it. She said he also did some of the upkeep work inside the house. Elinor said she sure wished they lived closer as they live in Florida and she lives in Oregon.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Cody Hanson. Cody passed away Monday, Oct. 19th in a Minot hospital from respiratory complications of pneumonia. She and her husband Kevin made their home on a ranch in Vang Township of Ward County north of Ryder.
Cody is survived by her husband of 25 years Kevin; children: Wyatt and Hadlie; mother: Beverly Brandt of Surrey; mother and father-in-law: Marcy and Kermit Hansen of rural Ryder; siblings: Terry (Nikki) Brandt, Shelby (Rhonda) Brandt, Stacey (Joey) Wald as well as other relatives and nieces and nephews.
Cody’s Celebration of the Life was held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Church of Minot.

Troy Alderman and several of his hunting buddies are spending the week with Troy’s parents, Don and Elaine Alderman. Troy plans on getting some area visiting done as well as bird hunting with his friends.

Ryder News for Oct. 2015

Wow, isn’t this weather great! I hope it lasts until January; well, I can wish can’t I?

Some news that I forgot to put in last week…Kari Mart and kids, Ana and Tate decided to spend the weekend with Ron and Muriel Peterson and they made an appearance the Ryder Pork Feed to say “Hi.”

There wasn’t much damage around Ryder from that horrific wind storm we had a week ago. My brother had the top (about 40 feet) of a 100 foot evergreen break off and luckily it didn’t land on his mobile home. Russell and Gayle Semmen had a large limb break off from one of their trees and that’s all I have heard about. I guess the wind storm earlier this summer must have taken care of all the weak trees as that one really left a mess!

If you didn’t have a chance to buy a Makoti Centennial Book, there are some for sale at the Cornerstone Bank in Makoti. You can enjoy reading about Pioneer Days, History of Makoti, Family Histories, Churches, Schools, Veterans, Organizations, Centennial Farms, Memorials and much more! All proceeds from the sale of these books goes to the Makoti Community Corporation.

Cash Petersen with his 4th place trophy

Dad Tony Petersen helping Cash get ready for his race.

I received an e-mail from Tony Petersen about his 6 year old son Cash. Tony says, “Cash Petersen #369 ended up taking 4th place in in the state of North Dakota in the 4 to 6 50cc class. It was a great season and Cash progressed so fast that I can't wait to see where he goes with this. He will be continuing his racing on the g4mx circuit in SD on the indoor track this winter."

Oct. 31: Halloween party 6:00 PM -7:30 PM at Makoti’s Legion Hall

Ryder News Oct. 15, 2015

Ryder News for Oct. 15, 2015
We had a terrific wind storm with winds gusting to 60 mph starting late Sunday morning and lasting into Monday afternoon. I thought our house was going to blow away! I sure am glad that it wasn’t snowing!! So far I haven’t heard about or seen any damages from the wind in our surrounding area but I probably won’t find out until later in the week when the news comes pouring in! I do know that the Staci and John McGrath’s of Minot had parts of their back yard fence blown over.

Saturday, Oct. 10th was Kenny’s birthday so we made our semi-annual trek to Minot to one of our favorite eating places so he could have his birthday meal with a $15 discount. He had a New York strip steak and of course I had ribs like I always do! This is a semi-annual trek as we go to the same place on my birthday too. I thought it would be neat if my brother, his wife, Johnny and I all went together for our Jan. 12th birthdays. The restaurant would probably freak out!
After eating our favorite meals in Minot that day, we hurried home to take in the Pork Roast festivities at the Ryder Community Center put on by the Senior Citizens.

Dick Ludwig dishing up scalloped potatoes at the Pork Roast Feed.

Over 100 people attended and enjoyed a meal of pork roast on a giant bun, scalloped potatoes, coleslaw and a variety of bars for dessert. The free will offering will be used to help replace the carpeting on the Senior Center floor.
David Kimball, Gary Hagen and Denise Johnson were the main cooks. The food was prepared at the Sr. Center and then transported to the Community Center. Some others that helped with serving and other tasks were: Pastor Galloway, Ronnie and Muriel Peterson, Harvey Johnson, Dick and Debbie Ludwig and Kathy Kimball. Sorry if I missed anyone that volunteered to help with the serving and cleaning up.       The DJ for the event was my nephew, David Ludwig and he kept a variety of music playing softly in the background.

Pastor Galloway, Kathy Kimball, and Gary Hagen helping to serve the crowd at the Pork Roast Feed.

Houses are disappearing in the Ryder area. Age and weather without upkeep develops the need to have them demolished. Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad have been busy tearing down the old Kronbach house located north of Ryder along highway 28. And, another house that disappeared this past week was the Clarence and Gladys (Underdahl) Haugen house northeast of Ryder. Many of their neighbors drank coffee in Gladys’ kitchen including several generations of the Martin Hansen’s, Clarence Guttormson’s, Leo Karna’s, Art Johnson’s, and Clarence Endresen’s. Clarence and Gladys’ children were Dorie, Robert (Bob), Richard, Donna (Red), and Roger (Buck).

Upcoming events:
Oct. 18: Fifth Annual Burger Bash after the 10:30 worship service at Ryder Calvary Church. The Church will supply the burgers and hotdogs with fixings as usual and we ask for you to bring salads or desserts to share. Sunday school will start the following week on October 25th at 9:30 a.m. There will be classes for preschool on up to the adults.

Nov. 4: Flu shots at Ryder Senior Center 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Nov. 4: Flu shots at Makoti North Shore High School 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Nov. 14: Bazaar at Ryder gym sponsored by the Ryder Community Club. 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with Turkey Drawing to follow at 3:00 p.m.

It looks like this is all the news that I could find for this week. Check back next week to see if I mentioned you in the news. Have a great week and if you had any wind storm damage, let me know and if you can take pictures of the damage send them to me!

Ryder News for Oct. 8, 2015

I am sure most if not all of you came up with the name of those two women who were walking the streets of Ryder last week. But just in case you weren’t totally sure, their names are Gayle Wilson Albert and Shirley Preston Bezanson.

Marvin Franklin “Leader of the Pack” for Makoti Threshing Show’s Tractor Trek.
12 Tractor Trek drivers enjoying coffee and rolls in Ryder before heading back to Makoti.

Friday turned out to be a busy day around here. It all started with the Makoti Thresher’s annual Tractor Trek from Makoti to Ryder in the morning. Marvin Franklin was the “Leader of the Pack” again this year with 11 tractors following his tractor on their way to have coffee and rolls in Ryder. John Warner served the coffee and rolls in the back of the new museum as the Senior Center was busy preparing for another event. Then they “trekked” back to Makoti for lunch.

Pastor Galloway officiating at Byron Paulson’s graveside burial service

At 11:00 a.m. friends and family of Byron Paulson met at the Ryder Cemetery for a graveside service officiated by Pastor Chuck Galloway. Around 75 people gathered at the Senior Center for lunch and fellowship after the service. In missing man tradition, David Kimball set a place for Byron at the head of a table and poured a cup of coffee for him.
Byron Paulson’s daughter Gina and husband Phil Laney and sons, Bredan and Trent were here for Byron’s service. Dwight Paulson and his son Ryan were also here along and also Byron and Dwight’s niece Susan.
Dwight Paulson of Madison, Wisconsin and his son Ryan of Chicago, Illinois spent the weekend at the Ron Peterson home. They were here for the burial of Dwight’s brother Byron.
Saturday they were joined by Roger Haugen and his sons Dan and Jeff. They all attended the Makoti Threshing Show.

It was a rather dreary weekend for the 55th annual Makoti threshing show with rain, wind and cold weather altho there appeared to be pretty good attendance. I basically stayed in the cook car serving taco in a bag and sampling the rest of the food! I simply didn’t dare take a chance of going out in the rain as you know…sugar melts! My brother would say, “So do witches!”

Faye Karna will not be doing calendars anymore. If you have a birthday you want given over the radio, just call Dave Lehrner at 852-1818 before 8:00 a.m. the week day of the birthday/anniversary while he has a song playing.  He will answer and then you give your request. If the birthday or anniversary is on the week-end, call on Friday as he doesn’t do this on week-ends. This is the KCJB-910 station.

Bud Karna had surgery last Monday for an aneurysm on his aorta.  He is home and doing fine. He and Faye spent most of that week in Bismarck with Kellie-Tom’s boys as both parents were out of town. Kellie was on a business trip while Tom was attending his older brother’s retirement-from-the-Marine’s party. Their trip home got delayed some as Kellie’s flight into Denver was late so she had to spend an extra night there.
Neighbors that have stopped in to see how Bud Karna is doing since this latest surgery were Marcy and Kermit Hansen and Pedie and Duane Endresen.

Kenny and I decided to “bite the bullet” and join the Ryder Senior Citizens. My brother Dick and wife Debbie also joined. Now we just need to get some more of us youngsters to join and get some fun stuff going on again like in the good old days!

Oct. 10: Ryder’s first annual pig roast sponsored by the Ryder Senior Citizens will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10th from 6-10 p.m. at the Ryder Community Center (Ryder school gym). Bun, Roast Pig, Potatoes, and Coleslaw will surely fill you up. Free will offering with the funds to be used for floor repairs at the Senior Center. There will also be DJ music.

Oct. 13: Ryder Community Club's meeting at Ryder Community Center (Ryder Gym) at 7:00 p.m.

Oct. 13: The Ward County Commission on Aging will meet at 11:30 a.m. at the Makoti Pioneer Senior Center. Lunch will be served and a meeting to follow. A Makoti/Ryder ambulance squad member will speak on winter safety for seniors. All area seniors are welcome to attend.

Ryder News Oct. 1, 2015

Ryder News for Oct. 1, 2015

For those with inquiring minds who want to know what is going on on Ryder’s Main St., I have the scoop!! There is a new building going up!! It will house the City Auditor’s office and also a meeting room for the City Council and hopefully will be completed by spring.

Remember BINGO this Friday night, Oct. 2nd at 7 p.m. in the Ryder Community Center (Ryder Gym).

It is our anniversary today, Oct. 1st!!! We made it 39 years and we haven’t killed each other yet. I think we are to be congratulated!!!

There is a search being done for WWII Veterans that are still alive in ND. There is a ND “Red Book” that lists all those who registered from 1941-1945, but there is no listing of those still alive or living in the state. There is going to be a Victory WWII Celebration to honor them in Bismarck on Oct. 10th.  Do we know of anyone in this area that would qualify?  If so, please call 701-333-2064 and leave a phone number for a return call. Thanks for helping find those important vets.

Do you recognize these mystery ladies?

A couple of ladies were wandering the streets (street walkers?) of Ryder and when questioned about taking their picture, they agreed as they thought it might draw attention from former Ryder classmates. They went on to say that they have a reunion coming up in 2 years and hope that they can contact all former classmates before then as they are hoping that most will attend. So, if you recognize these gals and were in their class, give them a call and help get organized for that reunion. They could use your help! If you don’t know who they are, I will print their names next week for your edification.

Ryder High sweater and barbershop instruments donated by Brayton Paul.
The Ryder Historical Society received some neat additions this past week. Brayton Paul, a 1937 Ryder graduate, sent his brother Dale’s Ryder High sweater.                 It is in such great shape and has the letter still attached. Plus, Brayton was thoughtful and sent barber instruments that their dad, Edwin, had used at the Paul Barbershop of Ryder as early as 1906.  Edwin died in 1926; so, do you think he used that electric clipper?  It is neat as it is in its original box.
Edwin’s first wife, Katherine, died in 1911 and both of them are buried in the Catholic section of the Ryder Rosehill Cemetery. Together they had 2 children and named them Galerd and Katherine. With his second wife, the following children were born: Macey, Carmen, Brayton, Dale and Laura.  All are deceased except Brayton who is 96. Brayton Paul was an inventor and you can see his invention on the Radio Control site at www.rchalloffame.org. Once you are on the site go under the right-hand side of Special Exhibits and go down to Paul One.

Ron and Muriel Peterson went to LaMoure, ND Thursday to see their grandson Tate play football. Their team won. They stayed until Saturday so they could watch their granddaughter take part in a volleyball tournament. Their team took first place. Congratulations LaMoure Loboes!
Friday, while the Mart family was busy, Ron and Muriel drove to Fargo to visit with Pastor Konrad and Carol Koosmann. Pastor Konrad has Parkinson's disease and is now in a nursing home. They have a lovely home in Edgewood Village. Their children Micah and Nicole also live in Fargo. Nicole's daughter, Isabelle, is four years old and the apple of their eye. They said to say "Hi" to everyone.

Oct. 2: Memorial for Byron Paulson at cemetery 11:00 a.m. with lunch to follow at the Sr. Citizens Center from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to both events.

   Oct. 3-4: Makoti Threshing Show

That’s it for this week…have a great one. I should be (God willing) working at St. John’s cook car on Sunday. Stop by and say “Hi”.
