   The Story of the Poppy
The poppy flower only grows in the absence of other flowers and only in ground that has been churned. In perhaps the best known poem of World War I, when Dr. John McCrae observed poppies growing between the crosses on the soldiers’ graves, it inspired him to write the poem “In Flanders Fields”. The poppy has since become known as the “The Flower of Remembrance” and is worn in memory of our veterans.

I’m sharing this in remembrance of the veterans as well as the active service members and wishing you a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend.

There was a large turnout for the Memorial Day Service at the Ryder Gym. Taylor Brown has taken over the flag bearer duties for Ken Bradley. Captain Bill Hudson was the speaker. Sue Mahoney sang God Bless the USA and also Battle Hymn of the Republic, Daniel Starks played a medley of songs from the different branches of service while those who belonged to those branches stood when their song was played. John Warner sang the National Anthem and also God Bless America. Jim Mahoney received a certificate for 70 years of Legion membership.

Several names that should be acknowledged for helping get Main Street  ready for Memorial Day are David and Kathy Kimball. They saw that new flags were bought and displayed in new holders and helped get and plant the flowers in their pots. Also, Daniel Starks helped a lot in getting the gym ready for the program. Derald Larson was a great help during cemetery cleaning as he not only trimmed until the battery in his weed eater quit so then he worked very hard at straightening the flag holders on the veteran’s graves. Peggy Reinisch mowed and trimmed the grass around the Memorial Wall in the park.

Destruction in the Ryder Park.
Someone drove thru the Ryder Park sometime during the night of Monday, May 19th and hit the cement pillar, knocked it over and broke the large cement ball off the top! What a shame and I understand that you can see the tracks that took this person down the road thru the Otteson yard narrowly missing the satellite dish and then almost into the slough on the east edge of Ryder.

There will be a baby shower for Corbin Reno Larson, son of Jade and Brittany Larson, on Sunday June 7th at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. Brittany is registered at Target. Everyone is welcome!

Jill and Claudette Brandt went to Bismarck to watch Dylan Brandt participate in the pole vault for State for Kindred High School. He has only been doing this for 2 weeks and he qualified. He is the son of Daryl and Doreen Brandt.

Let’s get geared up for some fun this coming Father’s Day! It is the 113th annual Hiddenwood Picnic on Sunday, June 21st. There will be an All Faith Worship service at 11:00 and then the Pot Luck lunch will start at 12:00 noon. Plates and utensils are furnished…you bring the rest! The program will start at 1:00 and Kenneth Opsal as Elvis will be there. At 3:00 the Hiddenwood Ladies will be selling their world famous pies. There will also be kid’s races and there will be lots of prize drawings. You can get to the Hiddenwood Picnic by going 8 miles south of Makoti on County Road # 9.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is warning people about scam artists who are calling residents of ND and claiming to be from his office. They are demanding that people cooperate with a supposed IRS enforcement agent asking for money. One person received a call supposedly from Stenehjem’s office and was threatened with enforcement action. The number displayed on this person’s caller ID was actually the number from Stenehjem’s office. The Attorney General says his office doesn’t make threatening phone calls on behalf of the IRS and if anyone receives one of these calls, simply hang up!

Another little tidbit from the Gus's Things and Stuff website.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY #1: THE BELL RINGS

St. John’s Lutheran Church
You all recognize Ryder’s historic Lutheran church in today’s post, but did you know that the church bell first rang on this day, October 22, 1917 (or maybe 1916—see discussion below). Historically, church bells of course were installed to inform Christians when it was time to worship (just in case the battery of their cell phone was dead). This was also true of the St John’s bell—a common sound echoing through Ryder on a Sunday morning, which instilled some serious guilt if you were still in bed (not that that ever happened to ME). For you readers who didn’t live in town, you would mostly remember the bell’s ring for funerals, as it was audible in many of the school’s classrooms down the hill. This ring is more mournful; a slower tolling than the “get up and get to church ring.”
Now, it says in the St. John’s church history in the Ryder Centennial Book that the bell first rang in 1917 (a Monday by the way). It also states that “the church was finished and consecrated on July 24, 1917.” Three months BEFORE the first bell ring? It strikes me odd that you would install the bell after the church was finished, or that you wouldn’t wait until the bell arrived to consecrate the church, so I’m thinking that perhaps this is a misprint, and it should be October 22, 1916.
To support the 1916 notion, take a look at the “St. John’s” tab at Doug Wurtz’s www.RyderHistoricalSociety.org. There you will see a reprinted article from the Ryder News dated June 28th, 1917. It talks about the bell as if it’s installed, even saying: “It has a beautiful silver tone and can be heard for miles.”
Now . . . if you really want to over-think this thing, what doesn’t quite make sense to me is that if it were indeed first rung on October 22nd in 1916, that would have been a Sunday. It seems that the day the crew installed the bell, they certainly must have rung it a few times just to make sure it was working okay. And, in those days, people didn’t work on Sundays, so . . .?

I may post another tidbit next week from Gus’s website if I have a slow news week. I get quite a chuckle over his articles as he is a very informative and humorous writer.
