Ryder News Sept. 17, 2015

Ryder News for Sept. 17, 2015

A picture of the quilt made of the Ryder business places and park has been turned into the museum. The quilt was made in 1981 by the Ryder Busy Bee Homemakers.  Do any of you readers know what happened to that quilt?  It is believed one of the members won it in a drawing. Maybe someday it will reappear and can be displayed in the Ryder museum.  Hope it is not lost! Maybe I can get a picture of the picture that was turned into the museum and then we will all know what this quilt looked like.

Kelsey DesRoches and Peggy Reinisch attended the outdoor Wedding of Levi and Amanda Landphere (Grandson of Kathy Officer) South of Minot at the Novak Farm on Saturday.

Dick Ludwig had unexpected visitors at his farm on Sept. 9 when Tom and Mary Jones stopped in. Tom is a nephew of the late Wayne and Hilja Jones. He ranches at Lander, Wyoming. They were traveling thru on their way to Bismarck and just wanted to see what the old place looked like as Tom used to spend summers here with Wayne when he was a kid. They were very impressed with the way Dick and family were taking care of the place. Dick gave him some Minneapolis Moline memorabilia that Wayne had left in the Quonset. Tom is a cousin of Sandra Peterson of Ryder. Dick said they had a nice hour long visit. Tom gave Dick a little history of the place and shared some stories with him. They took lots of pictures of the place.

Gary Hagen left here on Saturday to go to Whitetail, MT and visit with Pat and Betty Wiley. He returned on Tuesday. Kind of a short trip wasn’t it Gary?

Sept. 14: Town meeting at the Sr. Citizen's Center at 8:00 p.m.

Needed: Able bodied men to help move the pool table from the Senior Citizens to the Ryder Community Center (Ryder Gym) on Saturday, Sept. 26th at 9:00 a.m.

Needed: Volunteers to help the Community Club fall clean the Ryder Community Center (Ryder Gym) Saturday, Sept. 26th, at 9:00 a.m.

October 10:  Ryder's First Community Pig Roast at the Ryder Gym. Sponsored by Ryder Sr. Citizens with help from Community Club members. Serving from 6:00 p.m. until gone. Disc jockey will be present. Watch for signs of other information.

Ryder News Sept. 10, 2015

Ryder News for Sept. 10, 2015

Old Mother Nature sure put a damper on a lot of Labor Day plans this weekend as it was gloomy, foggy, and rainy. Our rain gauge showed 1 inch and the way the rain came down, I imagine there was some that didn’t make it into the rain gauge. I heard that our weatherman said there was a 60 mph wind gust a few miles south of Ryder. The way it felt, I think it was at our house!

My brother Dick Ludwig had a mishap the other day which has him laid up for 6-8 weeks. He was working on some farm equipment, slipped and fell and landed on his right shoulder. He managed to break 2 ribs in the process which was confirmed by the Garrison ER.

Last week former Ryder resident Allen Becker along with his wife Carol traveled to the Montana wildfires to lend their support and offer counseling and hope to the displaced residents. Allen and Carol both work for the Red Cross out of Minot.

Pat and Joyce McKinzie are back from a trip to Medora. They spent a few days at the Mike and Jodi McKinzie home in Bismarck and Jerry and Sharon Franklin came to see them while they were there. Joyce said they had a nice time visiting with them over coffee. Jodi was just recovering from knee surgery but was able to get around on crutches. Mike and Jodi took them for a 3 hour pontoon ride on Saturday evening. It was a hot day so it was beautiful on the river. Joyce said there were lots of pontoons, boats and jet skis. Later they went out for supper at the Mackenzie Bar and Grill.

Marlys Hanson was a coffee guest at the Pat and Joyce McKinzie’s in Ryder a week ago. Penny had taken Wendell out to watch the combiners.

A grandson, named Kirk Mayer, was at the Ryder Museum during the Muellers’ 100th farm celebration. He was looking for information about his grandmother.  She was Ida Mueller Mayer, daughter of Herman Sr. and Bertha Mueller. He felt she may have lived around Ryder in the 1915-1918 years before marrying. If any of you readers have old Ryder Newspapers from those years, please scan those during the months of August as that was the month of her marriage. Kirk thought maybe there would be a wedding announcement placed in a paper. Faye has his address so call or email her if you are successful. Thanks for any help!

Gayle Wilson Albert visited her sister, Faye Karna, on Sept.1st.  She had driven up from Minneapolis for her son’s surprise birthday party and decided to spend a week and have fun with her granddaughters, Taryn and Raegan Albert. She brought Taryn along to visit Faye while Raegan attended her first day of preschool in Max.

The Ryder Community Club sponsored Bingo at the Ryder gym and Community Center got kind of shuffled around due to the Labor Day weekend. But…there will be bingo this coming Friday, Sept. 11th starting at 7 p.m. Don’t worry about getting hungry as snacks are also sold there.

Jenny Blowers-Johnson and Kyle Brossart
Jenny Blowers-Johnson and Kyle Brossart of Minot announce their wedding which will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot at 3 p.m. on Sept. 19th.  She is the daughter of Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad of Garrison and he is the son of Rich and Jane Brossart of Rugby.

Byron Paulson’s graveside memorial services will be held Friday, Oct. 2nd with burial of ashes at 11:00 a.m.. Pastor Galloway will officiate.  Lunch will be served at the Senior Center from noon until 2:00 p.m.

Ryder’s first annual pig roast sponsored by the Ryder Senior Citizens will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10th from 6-10 p.m. at the Ryder Community Center (Ryder school gym). Bun, Roast Pig, Potatoes, and Coleslaw will surely fill you up. Free will offering with the funds to be used for floor repairs at the Senior Center. There will also be DJ music and maybe some singing.

That’s it for this week with all the news that’s fit to print and some that probably isn’t!!! Have a great one and remember, there are lots of summer days to come with nice weather for camping and other outside activities.

Ryder News Sept. 3, 2015

Ryder News for Sept. 3, 2015

Byron Paulson

I received word from Gina Paulson Laney that her father Byron Paulson passed away on Aug. 27th. A memorial service was held in Montgomery, Alabama at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd.  A memorial graveside service will also be held in his hometown of Ryder, ND at a later date. Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Paulson and Irene Paulson Aker, and his sister, Marion Jessen. He is survived by his wife Vivian Paulson, Montgomery, AL; daughter, Gina (Phil) Laney, Acworth, GA; brother, Dwight (Donna) Paulson, Madison, WI; grandchildren Trent and Brendan Laney, Acworth, GA.

Our sincere sympathy goes out to the family.

October 18 will be Pastor Galloway's last Sunday as the pastor of the Prairie Rose parish.

Pastor Chuck and Jill Galloway, and son, Joshua went to the Musical in Medora Friday. They also found that his brother, Jerry and family from Dickinson were there. They got to visit for a few minutes.

Henry DeMille taken in Ryder between 1906/1910

I am including a picture of Henry DeMille taken in Ryder between 1906/1910 in this news edition. His grandson William (Bill) Johnson is coming to Ryder on Sept. 10. Does anyone recognize this man? If so, please contact Faye Karna as she will be visiting with his grandson.

Gus Mueller and Kirby Mueller displaying the official State of North Dakota Centennial Farm Certificate.

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is a great adage from Dale Carnegie, Forrest Gump, or someone equally famous.  On August 22nd, the day of the much advertised and anticipated Mueller Centennial, the North Dakota weather was a lemon; just about as bad as it possibly could get for an August day—cold, windy and horizontal rain.  So it was necessary to move all the planned outdoor activities inside, and here is the lemonade part: The cramped inside accommodations inspired meetings, conversations and good laughs that probably would not have occurred had all the attendees been spread across the Mueller farm.  Moreover, it allowed many to focus on the large array of poster board displays depicting the history of the Mueller’s and Brandt’s (and there was some Sorenson material too). The big dance that night also was a huge hit, despite not having the “lake view.” Before the bad weather arrived, on Friday evening there was an official champagne dedication, attended by family members, for the unveiling of the Mueller Centennial Plaque. This was followed by several home movies about the family and the farm, produced and directed by Mueller’s and Brandt’s.  Over 50 Mueller-Brandt relatives attended the event, many traveling from both the east and west coasts. The Mueller’s are very grateful to the Ryder Community Club for their assistance and the 100s of friends from the area who battled the weather to join the party.

Myrna and Terry Scheer have been visiting family and friends in and around the area this summer and before heading back to their home in Arizona, Lorraine Nelson had family members out for an evening lunch at her home. Those attending were: Ken and Sue Bradley, Don and Karen Bradley, Jim and Doris Ann Zieman, and of course, Myrna and Terry Scheer. Lois and Roger Nogosek couldn’t make it that evening.

That’s it for this week. Have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!!
