Major James C. O'Neill guest speaker at Ryder Memorial Day Program.

Ryder's annual Memorial Day Service was held in the Ryder Gym with Pastor Jonathan Starks giving the Invocation. With Daniel Starks playing guitar and Andrew Hagen on the keyboard the audience sang along while they played the Star Spangled Banner. Daniel Starks also played the Armed Forces Medley. The speaker was Major James C. O'Neill. He is a medic with the Minot Air Force Base. He spoke of his time serving as a medic in Iraq and Afghanistan and told of how even the wounded soldiers wanted to go back to their unit and continue fighting. He spoke of saving lives and of the ones who didn't make it and how their sacrifices impacted him. He told of one soldier that had the bone in his right arm shattered and how they put it back together. This brave young man wanted a pass from the Dr. so he could go back to his unit to continue fighting as he said he could still pull the trigger on a gun with his other hand! After the guest speaker, Daniel Starks sang God Bless the USA and Pastor Jonathan Starks sang God Bless America. There were special presentations made to Marvin Hagen, David Olson and Daryl Simmons for 50 years of membership in the Legion. The Benediction was said and the Colors Retired. Then we all proceeded to the Memorial Wall in the Ryder Park where military honors were performed with the 21 gun salute and with Sue Mahoney-Weber placing flowers in front of the wall to honor our veterans.

Ryder News for May 23, 2019

Our little town of Ryder was shocked and saddened by an apparent murder/suicide Thursday night!

Ward County Sheriff's Office reports on Thursday night at about 10:15 p.m, deputies responded to a gun shots call at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder. The initial report was that a male had been shot and the suspect had left the bar. When a deputy arrived, he located a male on the ground next to a parked car with an apparent gunshot wound that was deceased. The deputy was then flagged down by witnesses in the bar that indicated the victim was inside the bar.  A second male was then located in the bar, with an apparent gunshot wound and was also deceased. It was determined  the male referred to in the 911 call as the suspect was the deceased male outside. There is currently no known suspect at large and the public is not in any danger in reference to this incident. Names of the individuals involved are not being released at this time.  The investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released when it is available. This was posted on Facebook by Ward County Sheriff's Dept.

From Ward County Sheriff's Office Facebook Page:
Ryder, ND Shooting Confirmed as Murder/Suicide
More details have been released in the investigation of a shooting incident that left two men dead at a bar in Ryder.
The shooting occurred On Thursday night May 16, 2019 at approximately 10:15 pm, at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder ND.
The Ward County Sheriff’s Department says, investigators have completed all initial work and evidence collection at the crime scene. Investigators also have located video surveillance of the entire incident both inside and outside the Ryder Star Bar.
Citing that the investigation is still ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office says it is clear that the incident was between two males identified as 49 year old Danial Wayne Peterson and 32 year old Thomas Lee Huston – both of Makoti ND.
Video of the incident shows Huston arriving and entering the bar shortly before the 911 call.  Huston confronts Peterson and a short physical confrontation ensues. Huston starts to walk towards the bar door and circles back around approaching Peterson, brandishes a handgun and fires the weapon one time, striking and subsequently killing Peterson.  Huston then exited the bar walking to the area of the vehicle he arrived in, fires one more round from the handgun and then collapses near the rear of the vehicle and subsequently dies of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators are continuing to follow up and gather information for the incident. There are currently no additional suspects in the incident and the investigators are continuing their investigation into the tragic incident.
If anyone has any information into the incident you are asked to please contact the Ward County Sheriff’s Department.

There will be a Memorial service for our Veterans on May 27th at 10 a.m. in the Ryder Community Gym. Then to the Veterans Memorial at the Ryder City Park and then a chicken dinner for our Veterans and families and friends at the Happy Hour Senior Center. Please Join Us!!!

I just received an e-mail from Kirby Mueller and he says, "Sue, very excited to see you are back doing the news again. It is great for the community and those living outside the community as well. I saw your request for old pictures and I will begin sending you  material in the very near future.

I wanted to reach out to you with regards to an update from the Ryder Rosehill Cemetery Preservation committee before Memorial Day. Since the committee was created a year ago, we have toured cemeteries from Roseglen to Grand Forks capturing their guidelines for long term cemetery upkeep. At our last meeting we drafted our guidelines taking some input from everyone we visited.  We are putting up permanent signs at the Rosehill Cemetery next week at each of the three gates.  We were wondering if you could include the listing in your column next week so we could reach as many people as possible. I have included an attachment
". The following is the attachment he sent me.

Rosehill Cemetery Guidelines:

Oh no!!! Bats flying around outside my window the other night! We haven't had bats over at my farm for many years and now, here they are. I wonder if the gusty winds we've had the past few days blew them over. If one gets in the house, I will be very unhappy. We had one in the house years ago and Kenny was finally able to get it and kill it. Since he's not here now, I don't know what I'd do except run down the road screaming. I sure hope that my cat will catch them outside and kill them. He should be able to since he's been great at catching rabbits, a duck and a prairie chicken. If not, you will probably see me running down the road!

If anyone has been wondering why the Ryder Senior Citizen's wasn't serving breakfast this past week, Gary Hagen has gout in his right wrist and hasn't been able to use his right arm and hand so he couldn't do any cooking. Hopefully he will be back to normal real soon!

Pat McKinzie's 82nd birthday.

Pat and Joyce McKinzie were in Ryder this year to celebrate Pat's birthday on May 3rd. Tom and Linda Madsen came out from Minot and Lee and Julie, Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold from Ryder came to help us celebrate his big day. A pizza party with cupcakes and ice cream  were served for supper. We all had a good time visiting and celebrating his 82nd birthday. He got many cards in the mail and even had his birthday announced on the radio station in Rugby. He thought he had a really nice birthday this year!

Two grandkids of Harvey and Denise Johnson  graduated this year. Victoria Mineke graduated from Dakota College at Bottineau with an AAS in Photography and with a Certificate of Completion in Small Business Management on May 10th. Her little brother, Christian, graduated from preschool at Our Redeemers Christian School on May 16th. Their great grandma is Ruth Wurtz of Ryder and Minot.

Faye Karna was entertained by two of her grandchildren on Mother's Day. After church and dinner, they headed for a rodeo on a farm east of Bismarck. Their older sister was a participant in the rodeo.

Faye Karna has been back at her farm home doing more cleaning. She spends the nights at Ron and Muriel Peterson's home. She went to the Max kindergarten graduation ceremony Friday on her way back to Bismarck. Her great niece, Taryn Albert, was one of the graduates. Taryn is the daughter of Trent and Kayda Albert of Ryder. Taryn's grandma, Gayle Albert, from Minneapolis was also there. Gayle is Faye's sister.

Ron and Muriel Peterson spent last weekend at the Kari and Scott Mart home in La Moure. Karen Mart Taverna, Scott's mom from Fargo was also a guest. They all attended the Grand March at the La Moure School's prom Saturday evening. Ana, their granddaughter was a participant. The Petersons stopped in Bismarck to visit Marlene Streeper on the way to La Moure. On the way home they visited Faye Karna and the three of them met Joan Ostby, Jerry and Sharon Franklin and Mike Haugen for supper at a restaurant.

Remember, I still need your news items for this column to be a success!

Ryder News For May 16, 2019

I suppose since it looks like the weather is actually going to warm up and probably stay that way, I should really take down my snowman living room decor and dig out my spring and summer stuff!

The son of Clarence Bye in the above photo  wonders if anyone remembers anything about a general store in Ryder, ND.
It says on the back of the photo, the following, "Ole John Bye-Uncle- Ryder, ND. Also had stores at Makoti and Van Hook, ND. Clarence M. Bye standing next to stove at Uncle Ole Bye's general merchandise store located on Indian reservation near Mandan, ND where he worked for several years before going into WWI."
Annette Hansen Rockeman says: "I grew up at Ryder. I do know there were Bye family members there at one time. Ryder isn't on the reservation, however, Van Hook is. Makoti is close on the line and may have been at one time as I understand that line was moved. I remember there was a general store when I was a kid (early 70's) but it was not run by the Bye family then. I will share this post on the Ryder, ND site also to see if others know anything."

A Public Service Announcement: The St. John's WELCA will NOT be having their annual Mother/Daughter luncheon this year. It seems there are not enough workers to help set up, etc.

Sympathy goes out to the family of Micheal L. Larson who passed away in his Minot home on Thursday. Mike was the son of Arnold and Elizabeth Larson formerly of Ryder and Minot.

I got a phone robo call from 800-445-3160 on May 10th alerting me to the fact of fraud on my S.S. number and action would be taken against me. I just laughed and hung up and blocked calls from that number. The scammers are really busy!!

Julie (Nelson) Hatleli sent the following message: "My mom, June Nelson, receives the Independent and we are happy to see Ryder news once again!  Thank you!"
June Nelson, formerly of Ryder, and now living in an assisted living facility at Pathstone, Room 1202, 708 Mound Ave, Mankato, MN 56001,  fell on Dec. 30, 2018 and broke her hip. After undergoing surgery, she went to a local nursing home for rehabilitation. She was doing very well until Feb. 19, 2019 when she fell again and broke her right upper arm and wrist. June continues to receive PT and OT for this injury. She will be 96 years old on June 9.

There is a Norwegian gentleman by the name of Harold Mailland who has former Ryder relatives named Knute and Ole Mailland. Now, Faye Karna knows that Ole lived east of Ryder near her folk's place but she doesn't remember anything about Knute. She would like any readers who have info about them to get ahold of her. Her e-mail address is fkarna25@gmail.com or you can call her at 701-509-5137.

Faye Karna has been at her farm home cleaning and moving some of her things to Bismarck. Kyann and her children came up from New Salem, Saturday to help her. Faye spent the night at Ron and Muriel Peterson's.

Sunday, Faye attended the graduation services for the seniors at Calvary Church in Ryder. The seniors honored were: Garrett Williams from Minot and Addison Miller from Ryder. Twins, Josiah and Jason Brown from Minot were also supposed to be honored, but they were at home with the chicken pox. A dinner was served after the church service.

This picture shows the rotten core inside of one of the cottonwood trees Bill Quinn had cut down.

Bill and Joan Quinn who live in the former Weldon Haugen house in Ryder are having some trees removed. He said that a few years ago he  would have done this himself, now he gets tired just watching them. These are old cottonwood trees, and since the house was built in 1906 the trees could be 100 years old. The trees are rotten in the center from water, when they cut into them the water just poured out. Joan said,  "They were beautiful trees, but we were afraid in their current condition a good wind would have brought them down on our house". One is about 40 feet tall and the other is close to 60 feet. Cottonwoods are notorious for breaking and falling and almost all are rotten in the center. They grow quick, fall over and can sprout new trees from the branches imbedded in the ground.

Keep the prayers coming for the people of Iowa and Illinois with their flooding issues. Troy Alderman lives in Camanche, Iowa and works for the city. He told me there was a sinkhole that started out the size of a basketball and  when it finally gave way, it collapsed the sewer system below it. That's what they are dealing with right now, all caused by their continued flooding issues. Troy told me, "Normally the river would be between 11 and 12 feet right now, and we are currently at 21'6". Flood stage is 17 feet. We have set a record for the longest flood stage on record, 49 days above flood stage, and it's the Mississippi River! He continued: "I guess the only positive about it is job security!! We've got pumps running 24/7 and there are 4 of us that take turns making sure the pumps are fueled and running every 3 hours, all this besides our regular shift."

The Community Food Pantry and "free store" is open the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month with a free lunch and coffee.

The Community Club has a pool table they need to get rid of right away!!! Free!!! In excellent shape for easy moving, but very heavy so bring muscles to move it.

The Community Food Pantry is in need of cleaning supplies and food!! If you are doing spring cleaning and the dates are still good on food items, send them our way to the pantry!!!

Feel free to send me any Mother's Day news such as who visited you or where you spent the day and with whom! Pictures are also welcome. I need this kind of info to keep this column running! Speaking of Mother's Day news, my son Rick gave me a beautiful bouquet of flowers and I am still waiting on Staci's gift but I know it will be fantastic as well since I told her what I want!!

Ryder News May 9, 2019

Ryder News for May 9, 2019

Welcome to the North Pole! We had lots of wind and snow in the storm that blew thru here Sunday night into Monday. I had a little trouble getting the doors open with at least 6 or more inches of snow in front of them. It warmed up enough Monday for the snow to start falling off the trees and buildings and making a heck of racket when it fell.

There was a widespread power outage with this storm, affecting many area towns. My power was off for about an hour and a half, but some were without power for over 13 hours. The Verendrye truck was sitting at the substation right south of my place and the guys were working to restore the power around 10:30 p.m. Kudos to the workers for getting out there in the dark, wind and snow to fix things.

When the power decided to go off and stay off, instead of just flickering like it had been doing all Sunday afternoon, it was pitch dark in the house and I had to use the flashlight on my cell phone to run around the house looking for a flashlight! Then I was upset as my cell phone didn't have much of a charge, but after talking to Staci, she told me to plug it into my computer and use that battery to charge my phone. Clever kid that I have. I would never have thought of that!! With the power going off and on all afternoon, it was very frustrating trying to watch the Twins ball game and the Nascar races. Just when things would get interesting with the ball game or races, off the power would go. Grrrr.

Brenda Novodvorsky said this about Sunday's storm: "I guess we're the winners in Douglas, 12 inches of snow from this storm plus high winds. I stepped off the deck to get to the tractor this morning and sunk thigh deep in a snow bank. I enjoyed spring while it lasted, apparently it's winter already again?"

Downed tree in Ryder from winter storm damage.

I went for a little drive this morning in Ryder to see if there was any damage from the winds. Yep, sure enough, I saw 2 downed trees. The worst part,  they were my trees on my lots in town! I heard that Ardell Folden also had a tree go down, hitting his clothesline. If it had fallen a little differently it would have hit his garage.

Pat and Joyce McKinzie had as their guests at  Dakota Farms on Easter Sunday in Rugby, all of Pat's kids, grandkids and great grandkids for dinner. Afterwards, they all went out to the farm to visit and the weather was so nice that the men sat outside most of the afternoon. The kids had fun looking for Easter eggs outside and inside that Grandma Joyce had hidden. After they were done hunting for eggs, they all received Easter Baskets and had fun with those. They all had an enjoyable day as they all had not been together for a long time. Mike and Jodi McKinzie will be making their new home in Florida soon and Courtney and Brian Haugstad and family will be moving to Minnesota soon so they sure are going to be missed! Those coming to the dinner and out to the farm, were Mike and Jodi Mckinzie; Brian and Courtney Haugstad, Ellie, Easton, and baby Deklan; Cory McKinzie from Bismarck;  Lee and Julie Brandvold, Shelsey and Stetson from Ryder and Tom and Linda Madsen from Minot. They had a light supper and everybody helped clean up and left but they sure had a Blessed and Happy Easter.

Also spending Easter Sunday with Lorraine Nelson were Kyle, Kayla and Skylar Schatz of Minot. This was accidentally left out of last week's news.

Rondi Deaver of Minot, daughter of Ron and Muriel Peterson of Ryder has been promoted to vice president/mortgage operations manager at First International Bank & Trust. Congratulations Rondi!

Joslyn Phillips, $1152 bingo winner.

There was a BIG winner at Ryder's Community Club bingo Friday night! Joslyn Phillips of Ryder won the $1152.00 pot in just 51 numbers! What an exciting night for a high school senior. Congratulations!

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Jerry Jorgenson. Gerald "Jerry" Jorgenson of Parshall, ND passed away on Monday, April 29th in a Garrison hospital.

Sympathy to the family of Rudy Errol  Evensvold of Blaisdell, ND. He passed away April 27 at Trinity hospital in Minot. He was the brother in law of Ruth Wurtz of Ryder and Minot.

Douglas quilters.

Doris Zieman and I traveled to Douglas, ND to take in the quilt auction in the Senior Citizens Building. There were many beautiful quilts and I did manage to bid on one and get it. I took a picture of the quilters many of which belong to the Trinity Lutheran Church WELCA. There are other community members that also come in and quilt. There is one gentleman, Nels Narum, who also comes in and keeps the ladies in line! The WELCA quilting ladies are: DeAnne Finken, Isabel Groninger, Judy Haner, Gloria Lies, Marion Narum, Maryann Narum, Phyllis Narum, Lorraine Nelson, Alvie Nesson and Monie Talbott. The other community ladies that quilt are: Linda Burgeson, Stephanie Hagen, Dori Wilcox and Dee Ann Lowry. The WELCA ladies that served pie and coffee were Susan Erickson, Florene Knudtson, Grace Magandy, Joanie Narum and Myrna Ness.

Nels Narum, who keeps quilters in line.
