Ryder News for Jan. 30, 2020

Winter is the time for soups it seems and in the last few weeks, I’ve made a big pot of chili and at the same time Rick made a big pot of chicken noodle soup. I made a big batch of ham and bean soup the other day. I think I am getting filled up on soup for the time being. I did freeze some of the chicken noodle soup so my brother can take it back to Williston with him when he comes down this week.

I wonder what kind of weather we are going to have during the months of February and March with all this fog we’ve been having. Having foggy weather usually means moisture in the coming days or weeks, at least that’s what the old wive’s tales tell us. We’ll probably be up to our ears in snow! I do know that we have had some icy roads over the weekend and  today.

Those with the correct answer to the question, “Which daughter is in the picture with Alice Kotaska?” were Shirley Bezanson, Annette Nelson and Stewart Bofenkamp, who all guessed that it was her daughter Darlene.

We lost another Ryder resident on Sunday, Jan. 26th. William (Bill) Quinn passed away at his home after a 3 year long battle with throat cancer. R.I.P Bill, the Ryder community will miss you. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Once a month St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder has an evening service (usually at 5 p.m.) on the last Saturday of the month. This time we had the sermon followed by a taco meal in the basement and then back upstairs to have popcorn and watch the movie, “I Can Only Imagine”. It was a good sermon, delicious tacos and a great movie! We are going to have to do this again as it was a fun time for everyone.

Faye Karna sent me an article about Janice Eick, daughter of Tillie and John Stueflat formerly of Ryder. Janice is on a museum board in Seymour, Wisconsin and she said, “This may sound funny, but there is a small museum in the little town of Ryder, ND where I was born in 1937. Last year the museum was given original blacksmith shop equipment that was found in someone’s barn. The equipment had been owned by my grandfather and dad. They were blacksmiths in the community for years from the 1930’s on. The historical society reconstructed the shop in their museum in honor of my dad and grandfather. My twin sister, Jean and I were invited to see this exhibit. Memories came back to us, as we used to help in the shop to glue and roll granulates on wheels to power the trip hammer and grinders for the plow leas.”

Doug Smette with his wife Charlotte at his retirement open house.
Doug Smette, manager of the Sun Prairie Grain Elevator in Ryder for 31 years, retired on Jan. 17. 2020. There was an open house for him on Friday, Jan. 17th at the Senior Center in Ryder to celebrate his retirement. Alice Kotaska with her daughter..Darlene or Deloris?
A while back you readers recognized Alice Kotaska in our mystery photo. Alice has returned with one of her daughters. This daughter and her sister both attended school in Ryder while their dad, Elmer, managed the O & M Elevator. Is this Darlene or Deloris?

Here is a little recall on the Ryder seniors of 1937.  George Officer just died on Jan. 15 almost making it to his 100th birthday on Feb. 5th.  As far as is known the only living member of that class is now Brayton Paul who was 100 on Jan 2nd.  Brayton and his wife, Jean, 89 years old, are still living in their home in Acworth, Georgia.

They were Ralph Larson (1999), Ruth Magandy Becker (2010), Frank Weigel (1998), Evelyn Hofstad Stubbs (????), Robert Johansen (1990), Viola Olson Opheim (????), Odd Osteroos (2010), Huldahl Ronning Tiller (2013), Evelyn Hunter Martin (????), Dorman Dahlen (2004), Jerome Jensen (1993), Julius Rykkeli (1986), Archie Olsen (????), Edith Lykken Whitman (2004), Harley Sather (2003), Helen Arvidson Hilemon (1989), Robert Albert (1995), Myra Daleness Yonker (2007).

Ryder News for Jan. 16, 2020

Johnny McGrath plays basketball on a 5th grade team at his school in Minot. Staci always videos the games and has them on Facebook Live so I can watch them. I have this gadget on my TV that lets me screen mirror things from my cell phone. So I had the game live on my big screen TV. It sure is fun to watch him but doesn’t do any good when I yell, he can’t hear me!!

Last week I said that Evelyth Wohlk turned 101 on Dec. 30th and now I have names of the ones she celebrated with. She celebrated that milestone birthday on New Years day with Lydell and Wendy Wohlk, Brian, Heidi, Dalton and Triston Walsh, Nathan, Lanie, Nia, Jetta and Jaeda Wohlk, Nicole, Teagan, Leila, Alivia and Savaily Bennett, Verle and Sandra Rouse, Mabel Ike, Clarence, Darci and Julie Behles, Derrick, Darla, Dannika, Dillian and Devan Rassmussen, Gloria and Emma Carbajol. Following the meal everyone had a fun time playing bingo and visiting.

I received an email the other day from a gentleman by the name of Wayne King and he said, “I recently moved and going  though some of my parents stuff I found a 1922 old gold and black high school annual from Ryder High School. If anyone is interested in it I would mail it to them. Thanks.  Wayne King. Worthing, SD.” I told him that the museum was probably interested in it and to mail it to me and I would get it to the correct people to which he replied, “Will do.”

My birthday was Sunday, Jan. 12th and I celebrated with Staci, John and Johnny McGrath. It was also Johnny’s birthday and my brother and his wife’s birthday as well. John McGrath just missed being one of the special people by  days as his birthday is on Jan. 14th. I received a nice gift and they also took me out to dinner that day. We finished up with birthday cake at their home. I had a wonderful time and if I didn’t have 3 dogs and a cat at home, I’d have loved to stay longer!  I also received 86 birthday wishes from friends on Facebook!
