Ryder News for Dec. 19, 2019

Wow, what a roller coaster week this has been with the temps up and down and the wind mostly up and then...yikes, Christmas is almost here!

Addison, Santa’s helper listening to what Jacob Louks wanted for Christmas.
Santa Day in Ryder has come and gone. There weren't very many taking in the festivities that day as there were so many other things going on in area towns.
Santa and Mrs. Claus had the flu so they couldn’t attend and had to send Addison, one of their elves instead. He did real well filling in for Santa and listened patiently to the kids gift lists. I managed to snap a picture of him with Jacob Louks from Makoti.
There were 30 turkeys given away that day and every family received a turkey plus there were a few leftovers so they were donated to the local food pantry to be used in Christmas baskets. I managed to get a picture of Artie Hanson with the turkey he won.

Calvary Church will have a break from Sunday School on December 22 and 29. Sunday School will resume on January 5 at the regular time of 9:15 a.m. The worship service will be each week at 10:30 a.m.

That’s it for news this week. I didn’t hear from anyone and with the cold weather, no one wanted to be out and about making news for my column. Have a great week and get some news sent to me!

Mueller Xtreme Challenge: Left Axe Stall (left to right):  Becca, Kip, Kirby, Cindy, Murika and Kyle. Right Axe Stall (left to right): Sienna, Karen, Caitlin, Julia, Gus, Ben, Cori, and Robbie.
For the Thanksgiving weekend, Kirby and Cindy Mueller of Ryder traveled to Seattle to celebrate the holiday with their son Kip and his fiance Becca.  Joining them were their son Kyle (Portland, OR) and his wife Murika. Also joining in on the fun was Gus Mueller (Bismarck) and his wife Karen, his son Ben (Seattle) and wife Julia, his daughter Caitlin (Orange County, CA), husband Robbie, and their children Cori and Sienna. The annual two-day Mueller Xtreme Challenge was again a huge success, with several new events added--the most intriguing being Axe Throwing (see photo). Who knew that childhood chicken butchering would be a skill needed later in life?

The Louks twins:  Laney is on the left and Lexie is on the right.
Justin and Allison Louks of Plaza, ND said they didn’t do much for Thanksgiving as they had their new twins (see photo) coming home after being in the NICU for almost 2 months. Lexie John Louks was 2 pounds 6 ounces and Laney Coreen Louks was 2 pounds 9 ounces when they were born on Oct. 13th  at 28 weeks.
Lexie John came home on Monday, Dec. 2nd weighing 5 pounds 3 ounces and Laney Coreen came home on Thursday, Dec. 5th weighing 5 pounds 13 ounces.  Proud sisters are Mindy, Abbey and Haley. Grandparents are John and Melinda Smith and Kevin and Rebecca Louks and Evon Louks of Sebeka, Minnesota. In the photo, Laney is on the left and Lexie is on the right.

The Ryder Santa Day and Turkey giveaway will be held Dec. 14th at the Ryder Community Club (Ryder Gym) from 1-3 p.m. Santa will be there from 2-3 p.m. visiting with the believers! Turkey drawing will be at 3 p.m.! Come and enjoy, do crafts, games and visiting.

Our own Community Food Pantry gifted hundreds of rolls of Christmas wrapping paper to Souris Valley United Way and and also Gifts from the Heart in Garrison. United Way will gift area non profits with the wrapping paper for wrapping area Christmas presents, saving them money on buying it. The Community Food Pantry also donated to a Williston based non profit for gift wrapping. Pretty good for such a rural pantry!
The Christmas paper was gifted to the Community Food Pantry, so this is our way of giving back. Kathy, Patty, Christa, Dave, Roxanne and Amber, volunteers to the pantry, say it's all about the giving. So, don't forget to support your rural Food Pantry in your giving this year!

Minot Souris Valley United Way says, “Week one of the first ever wrapping paper drive is in the books! Kathy and PJ from Ryder caught our story on the news and decided to donate Ryder’s Community Club’s supply of wrapping paper from local ShopKo’s closing. This is what it means to #LiveUnited! By donating over 100 rolls of wrapping paper to our drive, together we’ll be able to help more than one agency at a time. This means we’re helping many more people during the holiday season and making the biggest impact!”

Ryder News for Dec. 5, 2019

Paul Wacek
On Wednesday, Nov. 27th, Joann Johnson, Judy Hansen and Harlan Hansen from Minot, Sherman and Layne Peterson from Makoti, Kermit and Marcy Hansen from Ryder helped Paul Wacek of Benedictine Living Center in Garrison to celebrate his 98th birthday. Paul is formerly from Makoti. Paul’s actual birthday was on Thanksgiving Day. He said that his birthday falls on Thanksgiving every 7 years. Happy Birthday Paul.

Torri Nelson and David Banks traveled to Iowa to spend Thanksgiving with the Troy Alderman family.

Spending Thanksgiving Day with John, Staci and Johnny McGrath were Sue Bradley, Rick Sprinkle, Shawna Gilpin, Gage Gilpin and Levi Sprinkle. Staci and John fixed an incredible meal and we were all thoroughly stuffed!

Dave and Kathy Kimball spent Thanksgiving with Richard and Judy Kimball and family, Janice and Brian Bogert and family in Colorado. They flew into Colorado the morning before the 'big storm'. They had a great time and ate way too much. And they did absolutely ZERO black Friday shopping!

Faye Karna spent Thanksgiving with her girls and families and they had dinner at Kyann's home in New Salem. There were extra teenagers present due to friends of Kyann's girls.

Marilyn and Delroy Wohlk spent Thanksgiving with their daughter and family.  Tami and Charlie Bisbee live at York, ND, and their 3 children are Seth, Taylor and Chas (Charlie).

Jody, Peggy and Josh Reinisch enjoyed Thanksgiving Day at the home of Kelsey, Alex, Kallie and Kirby DesRoches. Also enjoying dinner with them were Marlys Hanson, Jerome Harstad, Jaco Westhyzen, Lorn, Corinna and Adam DesRoches, Mary and Mike Vaughn and Ron and Sharon DesRoches.

Guests at the Ron and Muriel Peterson home were their daughters and their families-the Deavers from Minot and the Marts from LaMoure. The Marts weekend was cut short due to the weather report. They went back home Friday morning. Bruce and Deb Peterson were supper guests at Ron Peterson's Saturday evening.

A granddaughter of Kermit and Marcy Hansen is going to college for this year in Uruguay, South America.  She is taking an Internation Study through NDSC and concentrating on speaking different forms of Spanish. JayLyn is the daughter of Greg and Lynae (Hansen) Lardy of Fargo.

I received a message from Heidi Mausten and she commented on the article about the Leifson family. She wanted to clarify that her mother Beverly Hankel (Leifson) is alive and well in Washington state and that Gary and Kathy are both Leifsons (I thought the article said they were Leifsons). I apologized to Heidi about the article being incorrect and said it was a submitted piece and we didn’t mean to offend anyone!

Eileen Ehlert
We’ve had several more former Ryder folks passing away and our sympathy goes out to both families.
Eileen (Larson) Ehlert of Renton, Washington, formerly from Ryder, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24th at her home with her family by her side.
Jeanice (Skogen) Peterson Officer of Minot, formerly from Ryder passed away Nov. 28th at her residence.

The Ryder Senior Citizens held their Christmas meeting on Monday, Dec. 2nd. They invited the Makoti Senior Citizens to join them for a Christmas dinner. Due to the ice covered roads, there wasn’t a whole lot of people attending the dinner but there was a lot of food and everyone there got totally full and some even took leftovers home. Christmas gifts of Walmart gift cards were given away to those lucky enough to have their name drawn! Everyone enjoyed Sylvia Enockson playing her guitar and singing a few songs. Their next meeting will be Jan. 6th at noon. Area seniors are invited to come and see what it’s all about and hopefully decide to join.

Everyone is invited to Calvary Church’s Christmas Program, Sunday, December 8th at 10:30 a.m. The Sunday School kids, Upper Room Teens and church family have a variety of skits and musical numbers for the whole family to enjoy. This is their once a year, unique service to celebrate the birth of Jesus so they hope you will join them!
