Ryder News Nov. 26, 2015

Ryder News for Nov. 26, 2015

Happy Thanksgiving everyone…Hope you had a great day filled with lots of turkey and trimmings! We sure did as we had our turkey day meal with John and Staci and Johnny in Minot. Kenny took along some walkie talkies so he and Johnny had a splendid time!

Anyone that has Facebook on their computer should have seen by now the shared stories and pictures about the Ambulance that was stolen on November 20th, 2015 from Trinity Hospital ER in Minot while the attendants were transferring a patient into the hospital. I am sharing this information for those away from home in other states who read the Ryder news.
This resulted in a high speed chase south of Minot by the ND Highway Patrol and later involving the Foster County Sheriff’s Office who were notified that a stolen Ambulance was being chased by several Law Enforcement Officers and was coming in on Hwy 52 from the west.
The stolen Ambulance, which was driven by Timothy Blowers, drove over stop spikes but continued into Carrington. The North Dakota Highway Patrol then set up stop spikes south of Carrington however the Ambulance went around them. A quarter mile south a north bound vehicle driven by Cole Zaderaka, drove off the roadway into the east ditch in an attempt to avoid the oncoming emergency vehicles. The Ambulance driven by Blowers, then went into the east ditch and struck the SUV driven by Cole Zaderaka. After striking the SUV, Blowers exited the flipped Ambulance and attempted to run away. Sheriff Mattice chased him on foot, tackled and apprehended him. Zaderaka had to be extricated from the SUV, by the Carrington Fire and Rescue. Zaderaka is in stable condition. Blowers faces many criminal charges including Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Stolen property, Reckless Endangerment, Aggravated Reckless driving, and Fleeing. This information was provided by Sheriff Alan Ian Mattice from the Foster County Sheriff’s office.
I have received the following information from a reliable source: Cole, was on his way home from college for his 20th birthday the next day. He had to be extricated....air lifted into Trinity.....small concussion, broken clavicle, and air in pocket outside of heart in area of break. His face is scratched up, and he had 5 stitches in back of his head from a gash. They said at the scene if he hadn’t been driving a vehicle that big (a Lincoln belonging to his parents) the accident probably would have been fatal!
Thank goodness he will be okay after his nightmare day!

Bernie and Eloise Pellenwessel sent me the following e-mail to share with everyone: We recently sold our home in Ryder and now Jedediah Rader and Clarissa Ford-Rader and their two children are the new homeowners. We hope they enjoy their home ownership in Ryder as we have over the past years, and being a part of the Ryder community. As many of you know, we will always have ties - and will continue those ties - to the Ryder area. Happy Thanksgiving as well as Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
We would like to welcome the Raders into our community and hopefully we will all get to know them.

Kenny and I were pleasantly surprised Saturday evening when John, Staci and Johnny came out from Minot. They came to pick up some furniture we had given them. We all decided to go to Garrison and have supper before loading up furniture.

Don and Elaine Alderman’s new double wide home is finally here and in place at their home south of Ryder. They haven’t moved into it yet as there is work to be done on it both inside and out. In the meantime Don, with the help of his wife has been busy building a deck on it. I for one would have loved to have been there just to watch Elaine helping him!!

I just found out about another home robbery in the South Prairie area that happened in Sept. Guns and other items were stolen out of a farm home. Remember to keep your homes and vehicles locked. It also wouldn’t hurt to invest in some security cameras so if you are robbed you may be able to identify the ones who did it.

This seems to be all the news I can find to share with you readers for this week. Let me know where you enjoyed your turkey dinner and who you enjoyed it with. We will all be waiting to hear about your day…after all…enquiring minds want to know! I know a lot of you out there in Readerville got your deer, how about sending me some pictures with details!! Send to my e mail address  sbradley@restel.com  or send me a text message with pictures to 701-720-4297.

Ryder News Nov. 19, 2015 - Ryder Community Food & Stuff Pantry

Ryder Community Food & Stuff Pantry

The Ryder Community Food and Stuff Pantry had their grand opening on Nov. 14, 2015 during the Ryder Community Club’s annual bazaar. The people attending the bazaar were able to get a first-hand look at the items in the pantry and learn a little more about it. The pantry had to be government inspected in order to be open to the public and that is in the works with all the paper work sent off.

The pantry is located in a room in the Ryder Community Center (Ryder Gym) and Kathy Kimball is the lady in charge. You can contact her by calling her at 701-578-5876 or writing her at P.O. Box 61, Ryder, ND, 58779. She is available after 4:00 p.m.

This project was started by Kathy Kimball as she saw a community need with all the new people coming here from out of state. Many of these newcomers had to leave everything behind to find work and this will help them in the transition of moving to a new place. The food pantry is also here to help area folks who are down on their luck and need a helping hand.

You may also borrow from the pantry. Let’s say a person is in the middle of planning a supper meal and find they are out of milk or a canned vegetable, you will be able to call Kathy to borrow the milk or food item and she will open the pantry for you and it will save you a trip to a grocery store. If you are able, then you may replace the milk or food item that you had borrowed.

The pantry has a freezer that is going to be put in place and they are now looking for a fridge for milk and those types of items that need to be kept cold.

Ryder Community Food & Stuff Pantry

If you have donations of food items or other things, you can drop them off at the two churches here in Ryder and there are also drop off boxes in the post office. The pantry can use all non-perishable food items and can also use bath and kitchen items such as: soaps, towels, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, tissues etc. The Western Prairie Cluster gave a generous donation of food and money to help the Food Pantry get off to a good start.

Once again for more information or if you have need of food items call Kathy Kimball on her cell phone at 701-578-5876 after 4:00 p.m. as the pantry will be opened by request. The Food Pantry and Stuff is for anyone in the community who needs a helping hand.

Ryder News for Nov. 19, 2015

Harley Jones, a 1962 Ryder graduate and veteran

Harley Jones was all ready for the Atlanta Veterans Parade but sadly it was cancelled due to the weather.

There was a gathering of the 4 Prairie Rose Lutheran churches on Nov. 10th with 52 parishioners in attendance. The church congregations were instructed to sit with their own church members, St John, St Paul, Hope and Immanuel. A meal was served and during the meal each congregation was to talk amongst themselves and make up a poster sheet listing their church assets such as members, building, WELCA, Bible Study, etc.  Bishop Mark Narum presided over the meeting and also his assistant Sherie Heine was there to take notes. Vice Pastor Janis Sloka called the meeting to order and answered some questions. This meeting was held in order to recognize the strengths and weakness of each parish. It was stated that the ministers are not going to drive all the way from their homes to preach to 5 people in church. It was also the intention to get attending church members out and about to see if they can get inactive members back into regular church worship and to maybe find new members as well so all 4 churches can remain open and be able to proclaim the Gospel.

On Friday, John and Staci McGrath along with Johnny came out to visit and look for geese. They helped us move some furniture and they we all piled into their pickup and went goose scouting. My oh my, did we ever find them…snow geese by the thousands! The lake they were sitting on was so white it looked like snow and then even the ground where they landed to feed was white like snow. John gave us a lesson all about hunting and the facts about snow geese. He said a snow goose can live to be 25 years. Now I would hate to get that one to eat, I bet it would be kinda tough!

Ryder Community Club annual bazaar
The Ryder Community Club held their annual bazaar and turkey drawing on Saturday, Nov. 14th. The Close-Up Kids served a variety of delicious food to help them raise them money for their trip to Washington, DC plus they also had a table of various donated items for sale. There were around 15 different vendors selling their various items.
At 2:45 the Ryder Community Club announced the grand opening of the Ryder Community Food and Stuff Pantry which is also housed in the Ryder Community Center (Ryder Gym). At 3:00 the turkey drawing was held with many happy people having their names drawn for a turkey. Alas, I didn’t win one but my son-in-law did and since Thanksgiving will be at their home, that was just great!

This Sunday, Nov. 15th, St. John’s church served a free pre-thanksgiving dinner to area people. A delicious meal consisting of ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, corn, cranberry, olives, desserts, coffee and Kool-Aid was prepared and served. I didn’t get a head count as to how many came for the meal but there were quite a few there.

On Saturday, Nov. 21st Fran Franklin will be celebrating her 90th birthday. Her family is putting on a celebration for her at the Ryder Community Club (Ryder Gym) at 2:00 p.m. Stop by and wish her a Happy Birthday…everyone is welcome.

Santa Day and the Turkey Drawing in Ryder will be held on Dec. 12th at the Ryder Community Center. A Thrivent Action Team Project will begin at 12:00 with a benefit dinner of Hamburgers, Chips, and Salad to be served to raise money for insulating the Food Pantry room. At 1:30 there will be a Christmas movie for the kids and at 2:30 Santa arrives. The turkey drawing will be at 3:00.

Ryder News Nov. 12, 2015

Ryder News for Nov. 12, 2015

Not much news for this week as I didn’t hear from anyone. Remember I need your news to keep this column going, I can’t make stories up. Well, I could but somebody might catch me.

If you read this column last week, you are aware that there was a pickup stolen in Ryder on Oct. 4th from Ryder residents Anthony and Janet Payan which then ended up on a large rock in Max Bezanson’s pasture. Well, guess what…I have a picture of that pickup on the rock!

Remember the bazaar this coming Saturday (Nov. 14th) at the Ryder Community Center (former Ryder School gym). So far 26 tables have been rented out and are waiting for you to come and purchase the items on them! The bazaar starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 3:00 p.m. There will also be Thanksgiving turkey drawing that day at 3:00 right after the bazaar in the same building. These two events are sponsored by the Ryder Community Club.

There was an exceptionally large crowd at bingo Friday night. Everyone was having a good time, especially Denise Johnson. Denise managed to win 3 out of the 5 games. I thought maybe she would need an escort to help her get to her car but since her hubby was with her, she declined my generous offer of help!! The big pot didn’t go out and is still available for winning when the next bingo date rolls around on the first Friday in December.

Kathy Kallestad had a nice surprise when her daughters and their families showed up at bingo to visit and play the games. Her daughter Jennifer even brought a friend along for luck. Alas, it wasn’t to be their night!

Kenny and I went to the Happy Hour Senior Citizens Club on Monday for the free meal and meeting as we had joined last month.
The Club is always looking to recruit new members and since this is a short news week, I thought I would put a little something about the Club in my news.
First let me explain who we are and what we do. We are a group of people ages 55 and over. We meet once a month on the first Monday (unless otherwise noted) at the Senior Center on Main Street in Ryder. At the meeting we have a delicious meal together, have a short business meeting and spend time just visiting with friends.
Our Happy Hour Club invites you to come and join us. We have yearly dues of $10 per person. That is under a dollar for a meal once a month and a nice get together also. What a bargain!
We just started a new fiscal year in October. A calendar for the upcoming year is listed below. Please note the times of the meetings. We are on our colder weather schedule now with our meal and meeting at noon. When the weather is nicer and the daylight longer we meet at 6:00 p.m. For additional information you may call Pres. Gary Hagen at 758-2411. Please consider joining us…we would love to have you in our group.

   Noon Scheduled Meetings:
Oct. 5, 2015; Nov.2, 2015; Dec. 5, 2015 (our potluck Christmas Party); Jan. 4, 2016; Feb 1, 2016; Mar. 7, 2016;

   6:00 p.m. Scheduled Meetings:
Apr. 4, 2016; May 2, 2016; June 6, 2016; July 11, 2016 (the Monday after the 4th); Aug. 1, 2016; Sept. 12, 2016 (the Monday after Labor Day)

   Upcoming Events for Ryder:
Nov. 14: Bazaar at Ryder Community Center (former Ryder gym) sponsored by the Ryder Community Club. 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with Turkey Drawing to follow at 3:00 p.m.

Dec. 5: Happy Hour Senior Citizens Club potluck Christmas Party and meeting at noon at the Sr. Center in Ryder.

That’s it for this week. Tune in next week and we will see what bits of wisdom I have to share with you!

Ryder News Nov. 5, 2015

Ryder News for Nov. 5, 2015

Happy Birthday to our daughter, Staci Bradley McGrath!! Hope you have a great day and your hubby and son take you out for a wonderful meal. We will have to celebrate with you at a later date!

The Hagen brothers, Andrew and Ethan
The Halloween party in Makoti was a fun filled hour and a half! Lots and lots of kids, parents and grandparents. The fish pond was a happening place with lots of masked little ones waiting in line for their turn at the fishing pole and finding a goody at the other end.
Others went for the face painting and of course the booth with the lady making balloon animals or swords was also one of the busiest.

Joyce Pank and Bonnie Schenfisch manning the cakewalk

There was an amazing amount of cakes, cookies and cupcakes to be given away on the cakewalk. Johnny won two items! I took Levi around several times but didn’t manage to win anything. Bonnie Schenfisch and Joyce Pank were the ladies in charge of the cakewalk this year.
As for the costumes…I think there were all kinds there. Johnny McGrath went as Elvis complete with the whole outfit right down to the wig, neck scarf, glasses and gold necklace.

Jill and Claudette Brandt went to Kindred, ND on Friday to attend Dylan Brandt’s confirmation which was held on Sunday Oct. 25th. Dwayne and Lynda Brandt came down on Saturday.
They all went to Dylan’s last hometown football game which by the way, they won!
Dylan’s church had a special supper Saturday night for the 12 confirmands, their parents, God parents, and grandparents.

Ron and Muriel Peterson went to LaMoure last Monday to watch their granddaughter Ana Mart play in the last volley ball game of the year. On Tuesday they watched their grandson Tate Mart play on the 5th grade basketball team in Ellendale. Both teams won their games!

Arden Butts of Hazen, formerly of Ryder passed away Oct. 31st in St. Alexius Medical Center of Bismarck. His funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Peace Lutheran Church in Hazen. Arden is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Carrie (Lee) Lampert; Mark Butts; 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; brothers, Dick Butts and Dean Butts and numerous family members. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

It seems that there has been a criminal element living in Ryder. The guy responsible for the Ryder bar break in this spring and also for the gun thefts in the area has been apprehended. The culprit was foolish enough to try and sell the stolen guns to several area people…one of which turned him into the sheriff.
Then on Oct. 4th Anthony and Janet Payan had their 2006 Chevy pickup stolen from their yard at 2:30 a.m. while they were home sleeping. They didn’t have the vehicle locked and the culprit got inside and drilled out the ignition, started the pickup and drove off. He took the wrong country gravel road and wound up northeast of Ryder in Max Bezanson’s pasture. He managed to get the pickup hung up on a large boulder. Max was awakened by his dog barking and he saw the pickup go sailing into his pasture. He called the sheriff and he along with the female deputy drove into the pasture and she apprehended the fellow as he was under the vehicle trying to jack it up to get it off the rock.
My suggestion to everyone reading this is to be sure to pull your keys and lock your vehicles as well as your house. Times have changed and we aren’t as safe as we used to be. It seems that the criminal element has even invaded our little home town!

I received a message on the Sue’s News website from Darleen Dorenkamper and she said, “Is there a photo of the Vet memorial in Ryder I could get - it has the names of my father Elmer Magandy and his brothers Roland and Donald and a sister Irene on it. They all served in the Navy during WWII and I'd love a photo of the entire memorial plus close ups of their names if possible. Our local newspaper, the Minnesota Mascot, is thinking of doing a story about Navy Day for their Veteran's Day issue and I had informed them how 4 siblings from Ryder, ND had served in the Navy. Perhaps they could even use a photo of the memorial. Would sure appreciate your help. Thank you.” She also told me that she is working on her Magandy family history booklet and will use the photos I sent her in it.

Olive Boots is now living at Sommerset Court after her fall at her former residence. She had been in the hospital and gone thru rehab and is doing much better. She would love to have friends visit her at Sommerset. The address is 1900 28th St. SW in Minot. I don’t have a room number as of this writing but I am sure if you mailed a card to her and sent it in care of Sommerset Court, she would get it.

   Upcoming Events:
Nov. 6: Bingo in the Ryder Community Center starting at 7:00 p.m.

Nov. 8: Ryder Park decorating at 1:00 p.m.

Nov. 14: Bazaar at Ryder gym sponsored by the Ryder Community Club. 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with Turkey Drawing to follow at 3:00 p.m.

That’s it for this week. Join me next week same time, same place for your weekly dose of Ryder news and happenings.
