Ryder News for March 31, 2016

Let’s start the news off this week with my news. Our grandson, Johnny McGrath, came home with us on Friday afternoon and stayed overnight so he could go along to Good Friday services that night and take in the Easter Egg Hunt and Crafts on Saturday morning.
Kenny and I went to the McGraths in Minot for a delicious Easter Sunday dinner and fun and games afterwards with Johnny hosting an Easter Egg Hunt.

Now on to the news of the Easter Egg Hunt and Crafts put on by the Ryder Community Club.

And… they're off to find those elusive eggs at Ryder’s Easter Egg Hunt.

Wow…I couldn’t believe the number of kids that took part in the festivities! At the Easter Egg Hunt, the kids were divided into 3 categories with the sections divided with caution tape. The kids were on the hunt for plastic eggs filled with candy and trinkets with several eggs containing a ticket that could be redeemed for a bigger prize when they went to the craft event at the Ryder School Community Club/Gym.

Easter crafts...the bunny ear headband table.
There were several craft tables with various projects to be completed on each one. I watched the kids make bunny ear headbands and helped my grandson make his. The kids got to put different types of ears on the headband and decorate the headband with little hats, bows or flowers.

The Community Club served a free will hamburgers, chips, cookies and Kool-Aid lunch. Good grief…these little kids can eat! I watched my grandson Johnny eat 1 ½ hamburgers, several cookies and of course lots of chips.

Jesse Miles of Ryder gave a nice donation to the Ryder Park Board towards the purchasing of flowers which the Park Board sincerely appreciates.

Guests of Jody and Peggy Reinisch for Easter Sunday dinner were Alex and Kelsey DesRoches, Adam DesRoches, Jerome Harstad and Josh Reinisch.

Kenny and I went for a drive to check on our farm site out in the country and on our way home on a gravel road we thought we saw a road block. We had to get closer in order to see just what it was in the road. Much to our surprise, it was a whole gaggle of geese. They were on the road and in the slough on the south side of the road. There must have been a thousand of them flying, swimming and walking. I have often wondered how they can fly so close together when milling around without hitting each other and falling to the ground!

Geese blocking rural road.
I found a cute little article about clotheslines and thought I would share part of it here with my readers: Let’s see how many memories this brings back!

Remembering Mom’s Clothesline:
THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES: (If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.)
1. You had to hang the socks by the toes. NOT the top.
2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs...NOT the waistbands.
3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes-Walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.
5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think?
6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

I will share the rest of the “story” next week.

I guess this is all there is for this week. I hope to hear from lots of you with your Easter news. Have a great week and enjoy the nice spring weather!

Ryder News for March 24, 2016

Enjoying the Cornbeef and Cabbage meal at Ryder's Senior Center.

Kenny and I took in the Cornbeef and Cabbage Meal at the Senior Center the evening of St. Patrick’s Day. David Kimball fixed Cornbeef, boiled potatoes, cabbage and Irish soda bread. Denise Johnson made 3 different desserts with a green theme. Sad to say that not too many showed up to eat altho this was for everyone, but then that meant we all could have seconds and maybe even thirds! The meal was delicious.

St. John's men preparing Palm Sunday dinner.

Folks starting to arrive for St. John's Palm Sunday Dinner.

St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder held their annual Palm Sunday Dinner with the free will offering proceeds donated to the Ryder Food Pantry. This was another delicious dinner with roast beef, scalloped potatoes, corn, coleslaw, buns and ice cream. There was also horse radish to put on the roast beef and it must have been of the home made variety because it was strong. As a matter of fact, Derald Larson said it almost blew the top of his head off. I love horse radish but made sure after the first taste, that I only took a little taste each time. There was an overwhelming turn out for the dinner with people from Minot, Roseglen, Makoti, Garrison and Ryder in attendance.

Tyler and Shannon Stafslien and attended a rally last spring, at the Capitol in Bismarck, which was organized in order to denounce Senate Bill 2351 (the corporate farm bill). He is a 4th generation family farmer and this issue matters to him. Farms, in North Dakota, should continue to be owned and operated by families, as has been the case since the beginning of our great state. If you believe, as he does, that the legislators who voted to allow corporations (like the Chinese company Smithfield Farms) to own ND farms were wrong, then you should help to overturn SB 2351 in the June primary. He is curious how you feel about this issue. You may post your thoughts on his Facebook page --Tyler Stafslien for District 4.
Shannon Stafslien, wife of Tyler, is now the marketing manager at RTC. Congratulations!

Bingo will be at 7:30 on April 1st due to the Free Will Spaghetti Supper fundraiser starting at 5 p.m.-7 p.m. with proceeds going towards sprucing up the playground equipment.

Mark your calendars for April 3rd  and the Benefit Breakfast put on by the Old Ryder Jaycees for Ross Sherven from 8:30 a.m.–-1 p.m.at the Ryder Community Center/Gym. Proceeds will go towards Ross’s medical expenses.

On Monday, April 4th the Senior Citizens meal and meeting will be starting at their evening time which is 6 p.m. Hope to see you there as we are always looking for new members.

“December 1950   Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson
What a deal the weather man dealt out Thursday, December 6th, after our just perfect weather.  It started to drizzle after a fog and later snow started falling with the temperatures dropping below freezing, causing icy roads and poor visibility. We did not get much snow here in the immediate vicinity. Just enough for a white covering. This Friday morning, the snow is still drifting but weather man says “Decreasing winds” so we’re just hoping for another spell of good weather again.
Mrs. O.K. Hopkins has spent several days at the Kenneth Hopkins home in Garrison helping care for her new and only grandson, George James.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Rostad are taking care of the Sever Romsaas place for six weeks while the Romsaas are in California visiting their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Hanchett.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hopkins of Garrison entertained at a six o’clock dinner Sunday evening in honor of Kenneth’s mother, Mrs. O.K. Hopkin’s birthday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. O.K. Hopkins and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Hopkins, and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Hopkins.
So sorry for the error on my part. Ervin Hopkins has not gone modern on rock picking as I previously stated. It was Robert Sletten who decided to pick rocks an easier way by buying a new rock picker.
Phillip Hansen, who was hospitalized two weeks after a car accident, is back home, reported by relatives to be feeling pretty good.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Seeley and son of Fairbanks, Alaska are visiting at the Henry Hove home and with other friends and relatives. Mrs. Seeley is the former Ida Gilbertson.  The Seeleys are former residents of Ryder and vicinity. The past few years they have lived at Fairbanks, where Mr. Seeley is doing construction work. They flew from Fairbanks to Seattle, then from Seattle to Chicago and on to Pontiac, Michigan, where they bought 2 new cars. They visited Mr. Seeley’s parents in So. Dak. and visited at Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot. They plan to leave for Idaho on Tuesday where they will spend the rest of the winter.”
