Ryder News for Sept. 24, 2020

Wow, I sure had a lot of responses to the picture of Lena Johansen’s birthday party from 1977. Some of the responses were: Nancy Shuelke said, “Thanks Sue! Love this picture.” Jan Bleecker said, “Thank you for sharing.” Sheryl Erb Tolson said, “Thanks Sue. The picture of these Ryder ladies is a treasure.” Elaine Alderman said, “It's neat to see pictures like these. A lot of nice ladies and so many have gone to a better place.” Tara Tabor said, “Faces I remember from my childhood....thank you.” Dana Johansen Smith said, “I see my Grandma, Great-Grandma, and Great Aunt!!

Ryder Community Club receiving their Brawny paper towels
The Community Food Pantry was the proud recipient of the Brawny Strong reward. They received 1000 rolls of Brawny paper towels and a $1000.00 donation from the Brawny Company.

Avery Cree with her deer.
Avery Cree shot her first deer on her 12th birthday on her grandpa Dave Kimball’s land, not even an hour after the youth season opened. Gramma and grandpa Kimball,  and her parents, Carl and Crystal Cree are very proud of her!

We lost another 1947 Ryder graduate on Sept. 17th. Marion Olson Quick passed away that day from a stroke. She was the daughter of Albert and Hazel Bowen Olson and had one brother, Ray Olson, who managed the Ryder Coop Creamery for a number of years. Marion attended all 12 years of school in Ryder.  She had 3 daughters one of which lives in Minot.
If any of my readers know of any members from the class of 1947 that are still living, please let me (Sue) know. This is info that is collected for the Ryder Museum records.

Food Pantry News:
With Covid 19 making its way into our rural area, we will have to hunker down and change things at the Food Pantry in Ryder once more. Masks and gloves have to be worn at all times! No kids, and only 2 people at a time. Please remember to have a list ready, because the time in the food pantry will be limited!! Please be respectful, we have no choice (you all have been angels). If you can’t make it Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. please call, so we can get you in at another time!
Thank You!!

Classic Car Show in Makoti
I didn’t make it to the Classic Car Show in Makoti but I did manage to get a picture. It sounded like there were lots of cars and people taking in the event.

My wonderful son-in-law, John McGrath, got everything ready so the AC and Heating guys could come in and finish hooking up my air conditioner and check out the furnace in my new home. He also installed 3 photo cell lights on my new garage. Sure is nice to be related to someone that can do all this stuff for me!

I’m still waiting for the garage doors to be installed on my garage. I also need to have 2 sets of steps built so we can get in and out of my home. Those trailer house steps that they give you just aren’t very sturdy. The interior guys are finishing up in the house today, they even shampooed the carpets! I hired a painter to come in and paint for me so I have to let her know when the interior is ready. I also have to hire a moving company to move all my stuff over there. I had planned on having my family and friends do the moving but that will just take too long. I think it is better to get it all done at once and be done with it. It will probably take me months tho to find a place for everything!

Upcoming Events:

Sept. 27...10:30 a.m. Ryder’s Calvary church will continue to hold Parking Lot Drive-In Church services at 10:30 every Sunday morning until further notice. Tune to 107.5 on your FM radio station to listen to the service.

Sept. 27...9 a.m. Worship Service at Hope Lutheran Church of Makoti.

Ryder News for Sept. 17, 2020

Lena Johansen’s 80th birthday party on Sept. 17, 1977
Colleen Sorenson sent me a picture of her grandma Lena Johansen’s 80th birthday party picture on Sept. 17, 1977. The picture was taken by Joan Janz. The ladies in the picture are: Back Row L to R: Rosina Kraft, Jeanette Johansen, Catherine Haugen, June Nelson, Delina Johansen, Gloria Johansen and Jenny Linnertz.
Front Row L to R: Bernice Mueller, Inga Bradley, Hazel Grosklags, June Braumbaugh, Lena Johansen, Del Raye Johansen holding daughter Jennifer (Rockwell).
Colleen said that her grandpa William had passed away in April of 1977 and this was her grandma’s first birthday since his passing. She had so many nice Ryder ladies as friends.

This coming Friday, Sept. 18th, the Dakota Cruisers Car Club will be cruising into Makoti around 10:45-11 a.m. There could be up to 75 cars. They will be stopping at Neil Larson’s shop in town and going to the threshing grounds followed by a trip out to Hiddenwood Lake.
If you’re interested in checking out a bunch of great looking vehicles head over to Makoti this Friday.  It will be fun to see the city lined up with cars!!!
They also have a Facebook page..Dakota Cruisers Car Club.

Faye Karna sent me the following: "It was fun reading the update on Allegra (Lee) Bluhm Haugen in the Sept. 3 edition.  It is always fun to catch up on any former Ryder resident and/or graduate.  However, Lee is now living back in Garrison, not Minot. Other past info for you readers is that she graduated from Ryder in 1942. She was raised 5 miles east of Ryder and had 5 siblings named Gerhardt, Marvel, Beverly, Darlene (Dee) and Paul Jr. Their parents were Paul and Hulda
(Reiman) Bluhm.

Another of Kermit and Marcy Hansen’s grandsons got married on September 5th in Minot, ND. Ty Nygaard married Tayler Novak who was raised south of Minot.  Ty is the son of Kelly and Kari Hansen Nygaard. Kari graduated from Ryder-Makoti North Shore in 1986. Congratulations to Ty and Tayler.

Another fun time for Marcy Hansen was the gathering of their entire family at the farm to celebrate one of her special birthdays. There may have been more than that one reason to gather but we know it was and will be just hard to get them all together anymore with busy lives and jobs. To make it so special all 5 of the great-grandchildren were present so it was a moving, active time.  Hard to even get those special pictures!"

There isn’t much news for this week. I sure hope this nice weather sticks around for a while, at least until I get moved into my new home and that is a few weeks away yet.

Staci and Johnny came out to visit me last Saturday while John was at his Guard Drill in Fargo. She and Johnny were excited to go all through my new home and look at everything.

I am having one of my propane tanks moved over there and hooked up so the guy that does the interior work can start. He needs to have heat in the house when he finishes up the sheetrock and muds it otherwise it just won’t dry. I had to call 811 so Cenex can be sure they won’t hit anything when they trench the propane line in. Boy, that was some phone call...I was asked a whole lot of questions and then had to listen to all my answers one more time so they could record it. Glad that is over!

The garage is coming along nicely and when the overhead doors are installed, I will share a picture. I had a propane and heating fellow come over and change all the orifices in the stove and furnace. Wow, that was a job, took him quite a while and then he had to come back the next day to finish stubbing out the propane hook-up. He didn’t have all the stuff he needed to get it done the first time. Sure will be glad when all this piddling stuff is done.
In the meantime, I’ve been trying to pack stuff up. My house is full of boxes, empty and full. What a mess! I guess I will hire a moving company to come out and move my stuff, that way it will all be done in one day.

Ryder News for Sept. 10, 2020

Visiting with Doris Ann Zieman over the Labor Day weekend were Marcus and Melanie Smith from Maryville, TN and Codi Smith from Nashville. On Monday afternoon, Doris Ann, Melanie and Codi stopped by for a short visit and a look around the old home place here before it is torn down.

Broken tree limb at the playground.

Wow, we had lots of wind and wind gusts on Tuesday, Sept 2nd and there are quite a few tree limbs broken and branches and leaves on the ground around town. I swear that one gust was at least 50 mph as dirt was blowing and then it was sprinkling rain so my windows on the north side of the house got rather muddy looking. A large tree limb was broken on a tree at the playground. There was also a tree blown over north of Gary Hagen’s house and it hit one of the utility trucks that was parked along the street. September seems to be starting out as a windy month. Wonder if the old Farmers Almanac says anything about windy months and what they mean or if there are any Old Wives Tales about it!

Fallen tree on utility truck by the Gary Hagen home.
It sounds like we are going to get hit with freezing temperatures tonight (Monday). Sure am glad that I don’t have any flowers this year or a garden. I remember all the fun (?) it was to have to drag rugs and blankets out to cover everything up.

RTC is installing fiber optic cable around town and some streets and alleys are blocked off with all the equipment working. The other day it seemed that every street that I tried to go down was blocked by these machines working and digging holes or filling in the holes they had dug and burying the cable, etc.

We should let the people responsible for getting the Ryder Rosehill Cemetery prepared for the two burials there on Saturday  Aug. 29th know how much they are appreciated. They leveled the areas where trees and shrubs had been removed, mowed and trimmed. It looked very nice for the Hagen and Cunningham families.

The Ryder museum now has display cases mounted in the church area for each of Ryder's past and present churches. They need help finding pictures and items to display from each church.  Please contact John Warner if you have such items and would like to donate them. Thanks, John, for getting them up.

Staci, John and Johnny were out here on Saturday so John could install some outside lights on my garage and get the outlets put up for my garage doors. He got the holes cut for the lights and the boxes in but realized he didn’t have all stuff that he needed to get them finished. At least he got the outlets put up for the garage doors. This is all slowly coming together but I am beginning to wonder if I am going to get moved into my new home before the snow flies. The crew is busy working on my home today to get all the outside work done and then when they leave, the next crew comes in to finish up the interior. After that is done, I still have to have the rooms painted. Wow, still lots of stuff to do!

Ryder News Sep 3, 2020

Ryder News for Sept. 3, 2020

Thursday night brought lots of thunder and lightning starting around 11 p.m. and lasted well into Friday. My rain gauge showed 1.10 inches of rain and others varied from .94 to 1.40. It was a nice altho noisy rain shower and we really did need it!

As some of you may remember from news columns weeks ago, I was having a garage built and I had also purchased a double wide mobile home. Well, the garage is almost done and the mobile home is here but not set up yet. When everything gets done, I will share pictures with all of you. My son-in-law, John McGrath, is studying to be an electrician and he has been doing the wiring in my garage and when my new home is set up, he and another electrician will get everything wired and hooked up!

Bruce Peterson had his combine catch on fire last week. This is the 3rd one that I know of to catch on fire and burn up! That grain dust can start a fire easily so I hope all the farmers carry fire extinguishers in their combines.

Jade Hagen, formerly from Garrison, ND recently graduated with 4.0 distinction from the Mortuary Program at Fayetteville Tech, Fayetteville, NC. She will be licensed as a Funeral Director/Embalmer upon taking the State Board Exam. Jade is married to Ryan Hagen. Her parents are JJ Olson, of Douglas and Denise Hudgen of Garrison.
Congratulations Jade!

Speaking of Hagens, I didn’t have much info last week when I reported that Gary Hagen had passed away. I have his information now and would like to share it for my out of state readers.
Gary L. Hagen, 73, Ryder, ND, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020, at his residence, due to injuries sustained from a fall. Gary Leslie Hagen was born September 7, 1946, the son of Alfred and Dorothy (Plaisance) Hagen, in Minot, ND. He was raised on the family farm and graduated in 1964 from Douglas High School. Surviving family includes: Brothers, Marvin Hagen and Richard (Stephanie) Hagen; sisters, Karen Bronderslev, Janet (Larry) Mahoney and Betty (Pat) Wiley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Alfred Hagen; brother-in-law, Morris Bronderslev; and sister-in-law, Maureen Hagen.

Remember the class reunion photo I had in my news column several weeks ago? Well, I just received a letter from a reader that I’d like to share.
Hi, A Garrison classmate set me a link to your column in the Independent which had his aunt, Doris Price Landon, and my mother, Ruth Bussman Carlson, in the Ryder 50th class reunion photo taken back in 1992. The 6th female in the front row is Allegra Haugen - don't remember her maiden name. She and and my mom were BEST friends all the way through grade and high school, and talked almost daily until my mother died in 2009. Allegra once owned a variety store in Garrison, moved out of state several times, and now lives in Minot. Enjoyed reading the rest of your column, and still recognize some of the names!  I may live in Florida now, but I'm still a North Dakota farm girl at heart! Linda Silverthorn."
Thanks Linda for sharing your information. I always appreciate hearing from my readers.

Bismarck is memorializing North Dakota soldiers who died in battle during the Global War on Terrorism. A new housing development has dedicated street names and a park in honor of the 14 fallen members of the North Dakota National Guard. Senator Kevin Cramer dedicated a flag to be flown over the neighborhood. All 14 streets and the park will be completed in three years. The names of those who will be honored include, Spc. Jon Fettig, Sgt. Keith Smette, Spc. Cody Wentz, Cpl. Nathan GoodIron, Spc. Philip Brown, Spc. Michael Hermanson, Cpl. Christopher Kleinwachter, Spc. James Holmes, Sgt. Travis Zoest, Sgt. 1st Class Darren Linde, Staff Sgt. Kenneth Hendrickson, Staff Sgt. Lance Koenig, Cpl. Curtis Mehrer, Spec. Tyler Orgaard.

Visiting with Edwin Olsons were: front:  Kathy and Rod Kallestad
Back: Edwin and Karen Olson, Deb and Dennis Olson.

On Friday evening, August 28th, Rod and Kathy Kallestad of Garrison traveled to their daughter's home (Cindy, Wil, Henry, and Lucy Oberdick) in Surrey for supper and a get together.  Also there were Jenny and Carter Brossart, and Kylie Johnson of Minot, Karen and Edwin Olson of Douglas, and Deb, Dennis, and John Olson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
Kathy Kallestad's sister-in-law, Deb Olson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, spent the night with Rod and Kathy Kallestad of Garrison on Saturday, August 30th, after Deb and Kathy traveled to Hazen for the citywide rummage sale and found some terrific deals!  Then the 3 of them attended the Calvary Church Drive-In Service on Sunday morning followed by joining Deb's husband Dennis and her in-laws, Karen and Edwin for a wonderful ham dinner and an afternoon of the best visiting at Karen and Edwin Olson's home of Douglas.

St. John’s Church Dinner at the Ryder Gym
St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder hosted an all parish worship service and meal in the Ryder Gym on Sunday. Plans were to have the service and meal in the park but it was cold and there were rain showers threatening so it was moved indoors. The service was wonderful and the music was fantastic. Our minister and his wife sang and he played the guitar while she played the accordion and at times, the violin. Sylvia Enockson played her guitar and sang several songs. The meal was basically fixed and served by the church men. We all enjoyed hamburgers, buns, coleslaw, beans, cheesy hashbrowns and of course bars for dessert as well as ice cream bars later.

There will be a Bridal Shower for Trina Howell Wednesday, Sept. 16th at 7 p.m. at the Makoti Senior  Center. Trina is the FiancĂ©e of Caleb Karna.
