Ryder News May 7, 2020

Ryder News for May 7,  2020

We had a little bit of rain early Monday morning and my rain gauge showed .20 of an inch. I guess every little bit helps and of course once again I have mud puddles in both driveways. Sure is weird to have big puddles from that little bit of rain!

Ryder’s Calvary church had a rather windy and cool Drive-In Church Service on Sunday, May 3rd but lots of attendees with around 40 vehicles at the service. It seems as the word gets around, more and more people are showing up for this type of service and some worshipers even bring along their pets. They’ve had people coming from the Minot and Garrison areas to take in their service.

The Community Food Pantry has been busy trying to keep its shelves stocked.  If it weren't for their volunteers and Krause's Grocery in Garrison, they'd be hard put to do it. The Community Food Pantry also received a grant from Souris Valley United Way and received donated boxes of food from the Minot Homeless Coalition. “Praise the Lord”, a volunteer said, “He always sees our need”. The Food Pantry is taking donations of food and funds. You can contact Kathy at 701-578-5876 for information on how to donate.

Gramma Kathy Kimball has been going to Surrey Monday and Tuesday, to help her 3 grandkids; Matayah, Avery and Ean with school work, except NOT the new math! Then she stays with her sister, Laurene Bohlender Monday nite in Minot, so they can catch up on gossip and goes home Tuesday, after her son Carl Cree gets home from work.
Kathy makes supper both days, so Carl and Crystal don't have to worry about making it and sometimes she makes a dessert!
Kathy says the grandkids are anxious to come stay at the farm, but Gramma says, “Not until school is done”.

There are now many possible scams hitting our phones and computers. Faye Karna reports that a friend called her to ask if she (Faye) was contacting friends and encouraging them to take a money offer that she had successfully received through Facebook. It even had Bud and her picture posted with it to make it look very authentic. Once you accepted the offer, you were asked to fill out a sheet of information about yourself.  She DID NOT do this and hope no one falls for it.
Faye’s Facebook friends may get this same scam notice.

He is survived by his daughters, Cari Marie Hewit and Shawnee Ann Boyd; son-in-law, Samuel Christopher Boyd; grandson, Hunter James Boyd. Richard attended Blue Hill School until the school burned down and then went to Ryder. He attended Ryder High until his father, Otto, died in 1957. Then, his mom, his sister Ardys and he moved to Minot where he graduated from Minot High in 1958. Services for Richard Brandt will be held on May 7th  at 11 a.m. at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home, in Brighton, Co. Richard will return home to be buried at RoseHill Cemetery in Ryder, and placed next to his Father.

Makoti resident, twelve year old Vanessa Fransen, was out delivering books around the towns of Makoti, Plaza and Ryder on May 1st (May Day). She was doing May Day book surprises around the towns to let kids have books since the Bookmobile can’t come out right now due to Covid-19 and there are no libraries in either town.
Laura Fransen said her daughter had seen a free little library several years ago and had wanted to make one for their town. It is a take-a-book, leave-a-book system that lets people have an easy way to get books! The free library in Makoti is in a little locker located at the city park. The First Book company, which sponsors little free libraries like the one in Makoti, had started surveying people about how their schools have been affected by COVID-19. Laura said they filled out a survey telling them that their school was closed at the moment and the bookmobile couldn’t come out and they’d like to give books out for a 4-H project and they were given a $100 credit. They used that money to purchase around 160 books to deliver around the area.

Ryder has a used book type of library in the lobby of the Ryder Post Office and also at the Ryder Food Pantry.
