Ryder News for May 28, 2020

Robert Smette
Sunday morning at Calvary Church in Ryder, they were privileged to have Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Smette speak in honor of Memorial Day. He is a C-12 Standardization Instructor pilot in the North Dakota Army National Guard. He has 20 years total service and 16 years of active duty service, and is a Graduate of Army Ranger school. He grew up locally in Ryder and Makoti, ND.
“I will never forget this message.” a sentiment spoken by many as they left the service. May we never forget that freedom isn’t free.

Most of us don’t remember the speeches that were given by the various military speakers we have had over the years at the memorial services. But this heartfelt and emotional speech is one that most of us will definitely remember. I’m sure there wasn’t a dry eye while he was speaking.

Robert spoke of the horror and trauma that a family goes through when losing a loved one. In his case, he lost his big brother Keith in Iraq on Jan. 24, 2004 due to a roadside bomb. Keith paid the ultimate price, (his life) to keep our country free. He spoke of the horror when his parents opened their door to the military personnel and were told of Keith’s passing. It is something you never get over, you just get through!

Dana Peterson’s car

Dana Peterson of rural Ryder had his car at the Memorial service. Dana has a painting of Keith on the underside of the car’s hood in honor and tribute to Keith and his service to our country!

Robert (Bob) Petz
Robert (Bob) Petz, 87, Garrison, formerly of Makoti passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at the Garrison hospital. A private funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. A public graveside service using social distancing will be held on Saturday at approximately 12:45 p.m. at the Ryder Cemetery in Ryder. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison. Robert Joseph Petz was born February 11, 1933 to Joseph and Irene (Anderson) Petz.
My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Dave and Kathy Kimball had a full house Memorial weekend, with their kids Amanda and Joe McCallum, their kids; Tristan, Caleb, Autumn, Aspen, Colton and big Sister Mackenzie, her mate Joshua Odell  and their son Joshua Jr.. Also Carl and Crystal Cree with their kids, Matayah, Avery and Ean.
They had a great time, with room to run and play. They also celebrated Joe and Colton’s birthday.

It was a rather rainy day on Sunday with my rain gauge showing .40 and my brother’s rain gauge showing .57, so once again, lots of mud puddles and the grass is growing like crazy. It seems that I have to mow 2 times a week to keep the dog yard grass under control. I’ll probably wear my riding mower out trying to keep the rest of this yard and the yard in town mowed! Rick mowed one lot over town while my brother and I did the other one.

On the Memorial Day weekend, the  Ryder’s Community Food Pantry was honored to help feed 55 souls.

We seem to have a plethora of wildlife in and around the area. My son saw a mama and two young moose right west of Ryder on his way to work last week and my brother had 4 deer in his yard plus a red fox. Also there seems to be a lot of skunks running around, if you don’t see one, you can sure smell it!
