Ryder water tower

“If you’ve been keeping up with Sue’s News, or just keeping your ear to the ground, you probably know that Harley-Davidson has taken a liking to our little town of Ryder, and they recently painted our water tower. My little story, however, is not about what happened last week, but the painting of the water tower that happened in the spring of 1964.

In 1964, the water tower was still sort of a novel addition to Ryder in those days, and the original paint was quite pristine.  We had observed in some neighboring towns, that it was somewhat common for a brave soul to climb the tower, and paint the year of their class graduation on the side.  I was a junior at the time, and cruising around town one spring night, probably sipping some beverages, we decided that that would be a cool thing for us to do for our class (the class of ’65).   A couple nights later, we had the necessary tools—a can of black spray paint, a flashlight, and a 12-pack.  The time of reckoning had come—who was going to climb up there?  Before I had the chance to shout out “NO WAY,” Lee Sorenson eagerly volunteered.

We parked our car across the street in the dark alley by the old creamery, lights off, and watched Lee go up the ladder.  It seemed like it took forever, but eventually, the task was accomplished and he was back on the ground.   There was a problem, however.  To this day, we do not know if it was the fear, the altitude or the Hamm’s, but for whatever reason, he painted ’64 rather than ’65.

Word of the painting got out fast.  The next morning superintendent Doty called an emergency meeting of the senior class (the class of ’64).  No one from the class would fess up to doing the painting, so the entire class lost their senior privileges for the rest of the year!”

May ? Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson:

“Art Landon received a call that he became grandpa to a fine little lady at Jamestown, ND a few days ago when a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Brotten, nee Charlotte Landon.
Roy Peterson has been on the flu sick list this week but is better at this writing.
Mrs. Petrine Folden is nicely settled in her new home in Ryder.  Her daughter, Mrs. Linnertz, is still waiting for the roads to get better so Mrs. Linnertz can come and get her from Williston.
Folks, it just isn’t very much news this week due to roads, weather and no telephone.  Let’s hope for better conditions next week.”
