Ryder News for May 25, 2017
Congratulations to Remington Bigelow. He was chosen as one
of the 16 high school graduates to receive a $1,000 Rotary Scholarship from The
Rotary Club of Minot. He is the son of Steve and Deann Bigelow of Makoti,
ND.

Dwight Paulson and Gus Mueller ran into each other in the Delta Sky Club in Minneapolis.
They had a nice visit about their days in Ryder.
The Makoti American
Legion will hold services on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at the Makoti Legion
Hall. The Auxiliary will serve dinner after the service. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Ryder
High School, Class of 1967 is planning a 50-year reunion in Ryder on Saturday,
June 17, 2017. After 7:30 p.m., former class members will be roaming Main
Street in hopes of visiting with old schoolmates, local friends and
families. Class of 1967 graduated with
20 members (15 remain) and most are attending.
Class members encourage everyone to join them at 7:30 p.m. Saturday
evening to catch-up on the past half-century and relive the late 1960s. Some
class members also plan to attend the Hiddenwood Picnic on Sunday, June 18th.
John and Janice Warner
traveled to Dubuque, Iowa last weekend for John's graduation ceremony from
Wartburg Seminary. He is part of the ELCA TEEM seminary program. His ordination
is at St John's in Ryder June 24th at 5 p.m.
Great driving weather and the countryside was so beautiful with the
blooming lilacs and flower apple/fruit trees everywhere. Crops were seeded but
not up yet. A stop or two in Amish
country to view the sites and a little shopping. On the trip to Dubuque they spent a night in
Minneapolis with the Savian and Warner-Richter families. Everyone attended a
wonderful play-musical at the Minneapolis Children's Theatre, production of A
Year in the Life of Frog and Toad. So very well done. Return trip was a stop
over in Red Wood Falls and Strawberry Lake, MN and Grand Forks, ND.
I would like to remind
all veterans that served in the US Armed Forces during the period of Nov. 1,
1955 to May 15, 1975 that they will be recognized at the Ryder Memorial Day
services. Betty Mahoney heard about this Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Pin
Program and along with their daughter, Susan, has organized it for our Ryder
program. Everyone one who served during
that time from our area will be recognized and if present, receive a lapel pin.
Let’s support this effort to make our tribute to vets a good one this year and
attend the services.
Harley Jones called
Faye Karna, his old classmate, to wish her a Happy Birthday and to ask what was
new here at Ryder.
She informed him about
the Harley-Davidson event coming to Ryder and he would liked to have attended.
But, he is headed for El Salvador during that time with a church group to
volunteer. He reported that his wife, Bonnie, is doing well and is now driving
again. He wanted to greet all of you
Ryder folks.
Joylea Bowen Knutson
visited with Faye, her cousin, for around 2 hours on the phone last week. It
was fun for Faye to get an update on their family and to hear that all of their
siblings except for Betty are going to be able to attend their brother’s burial
(Jimmy) at Arlington on June 1. Betty just recently had bypass surgery which
prevented her from traveling. The twins, Sharon and Sharlene, still live in the
Fargo, ND area, while Milton and Joylea are in Minot, ND; Judy is in MN;
Lorinda is in Garrison, ND: and Betty is in Florida.
The 115th Hiddenwood
Old Settlers Annual Picnic is coming up! It will be held on Sunday June 18th,
2017 (Father’s Day) on the Hiddenwood picnic grounds 8 miles south of Makoti on
County Road #9. There will be an All Faiths Church Service at 11 a.m. followed
by a potluck lunch (plates and utensils provided). The program following lunch
features the talent of Shelby Huston, 2016 International Fiddle Champion and
Minnesota State Fiddle Champion. Other talent is also welcome on the stage. The
Hiddenwood Ladies’ Famous Pie will be for sale after the program.
Ryp to Ryder is coming
up real soon, June 3rd as a matter of fact! I was asked why Ryder was chosen
for the Harley-Davidson group to come to. I talked to J.J. Olson of Minot and
she told me that they liked the name of Ryder and are using it to promote
Riding Season and to inspire people to get out and Ride and discover the open
road this summer! She said the event is for everyone whether or not they are
motorcycle enthusiasts. There will be something for the whole family! The Ryp
to Ryder will be a daylong all family event.
A benefit ride and live
auction will be held for Gage Hillestad, a fifth grader at South Prairie School
who had a stroke on Jan. 29th. The funds raised will help the Hillestad family
with medical and travel expenses.
Some of the other
things going on that day are, the flag raising ceremony at 11:30. The Christian
Motorcyclists Association will also be in Ryder to Bless the Bikes. Bouncy
Houses will open at noon and knocker balls at 1 p.m. The benefit bike run for
Gage Hillestad starts at 12:30 and follows a route from Ryder to Magic City
Harley-Davidson in Minot, Velva, Benedict, Max, Makoti and back to Ryder. A
live auction will start at 7 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Hillestad
family. Other highlights of this fest include a burnout pit, the
Harley-Davidson Revel 1 truck and the Harley-Davidson Jump Start Rider
Experience. A street dance with music by Moments Notice will be held both
Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3. There will be vendor food trucks available
at the fest. Olson said there is limited free primitive camping available. This
event is being planned with the Ryder City Council.

The Ryder Water Tower
was painted last week. It was painted white with an orange band around the top
and bottom. The words Harley-Davidson on one side and Ryder painted on the
other side.

Olson:
“Mrs. Ray Olson, Roxann Fay and Miss Lundahl and Mrs. Ella Benson of Ryder called on Ed Olson's Thursday evening.Telephone linemen out of Ryder are having an awful time trying to put up poles, straighten tangled and broken wires after the sleet and snow storms of three weeks ago, Some places can’t be gotten to at all yet because of the water and mud. There has been no telephone service south of Ryder and towards Roseglen for nearly three weeks.Mrs. Soren Sorenson has had good luck with her early baby chicks in spite of all the snow and cold. She has lost only one out of 300.The Orrin and Gilbert Johnson families and Ole Johnson have returned to Blue Hill after spending seven month at Sweethome, Oregon where Orrin and Gilbert worked in a lumber mill.”
