Ryder News Jun 8, 2017

Ryder News for June 8, 2017

I had a hard decision to make on which news to do first, Memorial Day or Ryp to Ryder but I decided to do the Memorial Day news first.

Memorial Day Program Vietnam Veterans: Row 1 (L to R) Max Bezanson, Darrell Karna, Daryl Simmons, Gary Hagen, Michael Larson, Ron Larson, Darrel Linnertz
Row 2 (L to R) David Kimble, Dan Mahoney, Mike Haugen, Dale Semmen, Kenny Fjeldahl, Ron Wheeling
Row 3 (L to R) Marvin Hagen, Byron Larson, Tim Delzer, Richard Hagen, Harvey Johnson, Dick Ludwig
Row 4 (L to R) Dwight Paulson, Kenny Bradley, Don Bradley, Ardell Folden, Gary Sorenson

The Memorial Day Program started off with the Presentation of Colors by the Legion members. Next the Legion members and audience said the Pledge of Allegiance and after that John Warner sang the Star Spangled Banner. The Invocation was said by Pastor Jonathan Starks. Pastor Starks and his son Daniel played a medley of service songs representing all 5 branches of the armed forces. Byron Larson received special recognition for 50 years of service with the Legion as did Wendell Hanson for 70 years of service. Susan Mahoney Webber was the speaker this year and she spoke of the Vietnam War and the veterans. She also presented the veterans that served in the US Armed Forces during the period of Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 with a Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Pin. John Warner sang God Bless America, Pastor Starks said the Benediction and the Legion Members Retired the Colors. Everyone met at the Ryder Veterans Wall where military honors were performed. Afterwards lots of pictures were taken along with much visiting and then lunch at the Senior Citizens.

Mayor Jody Reinisch presents Key to the City of Ryder to Mike Roach.

Now onto the Ryp to Ryder News!
Campers started pulling into Ryder Thursday evening with more showing up Friday afternoon and evening with the majority of bikes and campers coming into town Saturday morning. The official Ryp to Ryder started off with the flag raising at 11:30 Saturday morning. Mayor Jody Reinisch presented the key to the city of Ryder to Mike Roach, lead of public relations for Harley Davidson in Milwaukee, company headquarters.
There were motorcycle simulators so people could try their hand at seeing how it felt to ride a Harley and then they were taken thru the steps of starting the bike, using the clutch, throttle and how to shift. Charlotte Smette was one of the ladies that tried it out.
There was a fundraiser bike ride for Gage Hillestad and also a silent auction with the proceeds going towards the fundraiser.
Main Street was lined with motorcycles galore. There were a lot of beautiful machines on display by their owners. The Ryder Park was surrounded by motorcycles on all 4 sides. I never did manage to get a count of just how many bikes there were but suffice to say there were a lot!
There were a variety of food vendors and vendors selling souvenir t-shirts and the Senior Citizens served breakfasts and the Community Club served lunch and supper, so there was a variety of good food for anyone that had the inclination to eat.
The two bouncy houses were very popular with the younger crowd and were busy all day and evening long. Knocker Balls were big round plastic type balls that a person would fit inside and they would knock into each other. Looked like a lot of fun for the younger ones.
There was a motorcycle burnout pit and a handful of contestants tried their luck to see who could create the most smoke with their back tire and a couple even popped their back tire. Kyle Christenson won the event.
The band Moments Notice played both Friday and Saturday nights.
It wouldn’t hurt to ask Sharon Franklin if she has dropped anything lately!

The town of Ryder is filled with motorcycles and visitors.

Staci, John and Johnny came out to camp at the lake and take in the weekend fun. They got some fishing and boating in as well altho the temps were in the 90’s. John did manage to catch a pretty good size northern.

I, along with Staci and Johnny went to Rick Sprinkle’s to visit for awhile and so Johnny could play with Levi. Levi needs to get to know his cousin Johnny. They did play together for quite some time.

The program following lunch features the talent of Shelby Huston, 2016 International Fiddle Champion and Minnesota State Fiddle Champion. Other talent is also welcome on the stage. The Hiddenwood Ladies’ Famous Pie will be for sale after the program.

Marking Time: With good weather prevailing throughout the week, the ground as yet is still not fit in many places for field work.  A few farmers have worked high ground. The majority are just marking time, waiting for better conditions.
Jumbo Size: Has anyone ever seen more and bigger crocuses than those in bloom this year? The prairies are just blue with them. It seems as though they must have been in bloom under the snow.
Mrs. Harry Peterson visited school Tuesday and after took Darlene into Ryder to attend confirmation at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Rough Winter: If little Diana Folden could have skipped this year entirely, she’d have suffered much less wear and tear. First she became very ill and underwent major surgery for tumors. Then she got the flu. Then she got the three-day measles.  Then she got the red measles. Now she has undergone surgery again, this time to have a fingernail removed because of a bad infection.
New Teacher: Mrs. Si Schellenbaum of Ryder has signed the contract to teach Blue Hill School next year. Mr. Nelson who taught this year will enter the university again this autumn to work on his master’s degree in sociology.
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Linnertz received word that their son, Robert, who is in the navy, has been hospitalized at Boston for six weeks but will soon be back to duty.  He has been stationed in Finland for several months.
