Ryder News Sept. 8, 2016

Ryder News for  Sept. 8, 2016

There was a good crowd at Bingo Friday night and it looked like the Tupperware fundraiser for Maureen (Petz) Hagen was a pretty good one. The Ryder Community Club gave out several $100 Tupperware gift certificates as bingo prizes. Kenny managed to win one of them so I now get to pick out $100 worth of Tupperware.

The Makoti Senior Citizens' center will have a chicken supper on Wed, Sept 14 at 6 pm.  Rest of  meal is potluck.

Thirty 4-H clubs were recognized for demonstrating their commitment to teaching
healthful habits and practicing healthful living by being designated as Healthy North Dakota 4-H clubs for 2015-16.

The 4-H clubs, with a total of 463 members, earned the special recognition for making "Eat Smart. Play Hard." lessons part of their club meetings for the past year. Six clubs also earned extra recognition for completing the Family Mealtime Challenge.

"Eat Smart. Play Hard. Together" is a statewide campaign that emphasizes the importance of making healthful food choices, getting regular exercise and families eating together. This was the eighth or ninth year some clubs were named a Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club. This year, each club member received a certificate of recognition and a small prize.

Several local county area clubs were recognized this year by number of members and number of years they have received the Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club recognition, and they completed the Family Mealtime Challenge:  McLean County- Washburn Cowboys, six members, two years; Lakeside 4-H, 32 members, four years and the  Ward - Prairie Ryders, seven members, one year.

"One 'H' in 4-H stands for health, and we continue to be pleased with the variety of health-related activities that clubs throughout North Dakota report," says Julie Garden-Robinson, North Dakota State University Extension Service food and nutrition specialist and Healthy North Dakota 4-H Clubs program coordinator.

"Being part of a 4-H club involves learning by doing, and these clubs have not only learned about nutrition, fitness and health, but they have participated in activities that can impact their families and their communities," she adds.

Clubs are required to incorporate at least one nutrition or fitness activity into a minimum of six regular meetings during the year to be named a Healthy North Dakota 4-H Club.

4-H clubs interested in participating in the 2016-17 North Dakota Healthy 4-H Clubs program should contact their county Extension office or visit this website: http://tinyurl.com/healthy4-Hclubs.

A former Ryder resident, Allen Becker along with his wife Carol made the trip to Louisiana to work as Red Cross volunteers several weeks ago. They were there for several weeks and worked with the delivering of meals to many, many people.

Kenny was a busy fisherman this Labor Day weekend and he gave all the fish he caught to my brother.

Ryder News Sept. 1, 2016

Ryder News for Sept. 1, 2016

I don’t have much news for this week but...I do have pictures! I also visited with some Makoti people and mentioned that I’d sure like to have some Makoti news!

I received a letter from Julie (Nelson) Hatleli and she said, “June Nelson had an illness that kept her in the hospital for 2 1/2 weeks in June and then another 8 weeks in the rehab. facility receiving IV antibiotics. She is doing much better and has moved to an assisted living facility. If anyone would like to send her a note, she would love to hear from you. Her address is 1575 Hoover Driver, Apartment 155, North Mankato, MN 56003.”

I received a postcard from Elinor West and she says, “Hi Sue, Just read your Aug. 4 Ryder News and had to let you know that I remember Brynhild Haugland. I did some typing for her  back in 1944. She paid me $5.00 for it. That was considered quite a lot back in those days. I believe she had a farm north of Minot. I am hoping for a Democratic Congress so they can save social security and medicare for us. Thanks for the Ryder News. Best regards. Elinor West”.

There will be a Tupperware fundraiser set up at the Ryder Community Club/Gym for Maureen Hagen to help with her medical expenses. This will be held Friday, Sept. 2nd before and during bingo. Bingo starts at 7 p.m.

Shelsey Brandvold, Martial Arts Instructor, Stetson Brandvold

Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold attended the Kickin In The Park – Moore’s Martial Arts Summer Camp 2016 last weekend. They learned new techniques, practiced hard and tested for a new belt. They both moved up to low Blue. Congratulations on working hard! Moore’s Martial Arts – Max is now enrolling kids grades PK-6 in the fall program. Join us on August 30th and September 1 for a free trial.  Classes will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.  at the Max Civic Hall. For more information call 701-839-9860 or www.facebook.com/mooresshoushuminot.

Tim Ouradnik

Kenny and I attended the Breakfast Benefit for Tim Ouradnik in Makoti on Sunday the 28th. They served around 150 people and the food was great, pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage, coffee and juice. I love it when they have scrambled eggs! We were able to visit a lot of friends that we don’t always get to see and also was able to take a picture of Tim (with his permission).

Dick Ludwig and Bryce Johansen combining canola.

Kenny and I went to check out how the combining was coming along and I managed to take a picture of my brother and Bryce Johansen combining our canola. They were using John Deere combines and I noticed that no one offered to let me combine. I used to love driving the combine but I used  a red combine (a Massy Ferguson). I remember Kenny Lavadney (when he worked as a salesman for Gooseneck Implement) teasing me about red combines when he sold green ones!

My brother mentioned that someone had said to him that I hadn’t mentioned him in the paper until last week. They said they figured I would get around to it before long--ha ha--I got him in the news this week as well!

Levi Sprinkle (grandson #2) playing with kitchen set.

I had the pleasure of babysitting grandson # 2 this last week. He is such a cute little guy and always smiling. He sure seemed to like to play with the old kitchen set and also the magnetic blackboard with letters and numbers! That kitchen set has been through 3 kids, Staci, Johnny and now Levi.

Johnny McGrath  (grandson #1) on his first day of 2nd grade.
The McGrath’s went camping this weekend at Hiddenwood and that moose was back visiting. They were hoping he hadn’t bedded down in the trees to scare them to death in the morning. Not many fish were caught but they still had a good time.

Upcoming Events:

Sept. 2: Bingo starts at 7 p.m.

Sept. 2: Tupperware Fundraiser (held during Bingo) for Maureen Hagen’s medical expenses.

Ryder News for Aug. 25, 2016

Hail on the ground at Lydell and Wendy Wohlk’s following August 15th storm.
Wendy Wohlk came home to hail and an inch 20 for rain from the storm last Monday (8/15/16). She said her garden looks sick but didn’t know about any crop damage.

Our rain gauge showed around .70 at the Bradley home with no hail.

Harvest is well under way in the Ryder area with wheat and canola filling the combine hoppers.

Don’t forget the Breakfast Benefit fundraiser for Tim Ouradnik at Makoti’s Senior Center from 8-1 on August 28th. This is to help with his medical expenses.

I received word that the new Ryder City Building is complete and they can begin to receive the utility payments in the outside deposit box on the front of the building or you can continue to send them to P.O. Box 6, Ryder, ND 58779.

The City Auditor’s Office will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 - noon.

Johnny McGrath getting ready to combine

Johnny McGrath may be an up and coming farmer...he was really interested in my brother’s combine and of course Dick took him for a ride as well.

Updates are continuous in the Ryder museum records. A count has been made of the yearbooks from North Shore. Those that are still needed at the museum are for the years of 1976,1979, 1987, 1998, 2016. If you wish to “loan” one from those years or donate it, just contact John Warner or Faye Karna.

A new doll display has been created at the museum. It includes Barbie dolls, MINI Cabbage Patch dolls, Precious Moments dolls and others. You are very welcome to add to this display. All items would be put on a contract and you are welcome to withdraw them at anytime.

This is an update on a 1951 Ryder graduate named Raymond Stultz. He and wife, Sherry, are still living in Rancho Cordova, CA.
He is still working 4 days a week at the age of 83 in the barber shop he has owned for 54 years. Sherry says Raymond wishes to greet all of you back in ND that still remember him.

Olive Erb Boots with her 4 great grandchildren

I have a picture of a  former Ryder High grad named Olive Erb. She is now living at Somerset in Minot, ND under the name of Olive Boots. In the photo, you see her with her 4 great-grandchildren that stopped to visit.

Lyla Kraft’s kids Joe, Herb and Denise

Since David Kraft's death, his wife, Lyla, has spent lots of time at her home farm near Kenmare. She has a trailer house there and has the 3 children up there working on a deck for her. It may have been some time since you have seen Joe, Denise and Herbie. In the photo they are at Kenmare helping their mom.

9 year old Youth Cal Ripkin Minot All Stars

I also have a photo of the 9 year old Youth Cal Ripkin Minot All Stars. They won the state tourney at Minot and  headed to Baxter, MN to play in the Regionals. They won this by beating teams from Williston, Bismarck, Dickinson, Mandan, and Fargo.
I am writing about them as 4 of the players and 1 of the coaches are related to Ron and Muriel Peterson of Ryder. Carson Deaver is the son of Steve and Rondi Peterson Deaver; and is their grandson. In the picture he is the only boy with sunglasses and/or last player on the right side in back row! Just an example of some more of that good blood and genes coming from the Ryder area! The kids took 3rd place in the Regionals. Some of the grandparents were spectators at the games and of course knew each other but 4 of the little boys playing found out that they were related and the coach, T.J. Stewart is also related to the Peterson’s (his grandma is Ron Peterson’s cousin). I guess it is a small world after all!

Calvary Church had their first ever Tent Meeting, July 25-27! It was a great time with special music every night. These special meetings were well attended with around sixty people that came each night from around the area. Guest minister was Billy Miller. He shared God's love and prayer for healing that brought much encouragement and blessing for those who attended!

I took in a whole bunch of rummage sales on Friday and Saturday. It seems like I am always buying “stuff” for those grandkids. I didn’t see anything I couldn’t live without but I did buy two bikes, one for each grandkid.

Up Coming Events:

Aug. 21: Worship services at Ryder’s Calvary Church at 10:30 a.m.
Worship services at at Hope Lutheran Church of Makoti at  9 a.m.
Worship services at  Immanuel Lutheran Church of Roseglen at 10:30 a.m.

Aug. 28. Benefit Breakfast for Tim Ouradnik at Makoti Sr. Center from 8-1

It looks like this is the end of the news for this week. Watch out for the farmers moving their combines, trucks and all the other farm equipment and now we also have to keep our eyes peeled for the moose and deer that have been scared up from their hiding places due to the harvest!

Ryder News Aug. 11, 2016

Ryder News for Aug. 11, 2016

Not much to share for news this week either.

We did manage to get some camping and fishing in. Staci caught a nice walleye and everyone (except me, no license) manage to catch perch and bluegill.
We also had some major boat trouble and John and Kenny did a lot of fixing but it finally runs and sounds fantastic. There was a little episode right before we left that had all of us in the boat going for a joy ride when the motor just up and quit and would not start. Thankfully there is a trolling motor on the boat and that is what got us back to shore. Later after exploring the problem, it was discovered that there was a kink in the gas line and easily fixed!

L-R: Garrett Williams, Raelyn Williams, Trent Williams as "Bubbles the Clown,"  Daniel Starks, Carson Rockwell, Lainey Rockwell  and Lora Rockwell.

We are so proud of our Prairie Ryders 4-H Club. They competed at the 4-H  District Communication Arts contest last month. They all did an awesome job! We commend them for their courage to speak and perform in front of an audience and judges, a situation that most people fear. Daniel Starks, Trent Williams, and Lora Rockwell took 1st place in their division, earning them a spot at the State contest.  On Sunday July 24th, Daniel, Trent, and Lora were among over 80 4-H'ers from across the state who gathered at the ND State Fair grounds to participate in the 2016 ND 4-H State Communication Arts contest.  Daniel won  two Award of Excellence ribbons for Teen Broadcasting and Teen Interpretive Reading. Trent received an Award of Excellence ribbon for Pre-teen Dramatic Presentation and Lora earned an Award of Excellence ribbon for Pre-teen Prepared Speech. (A panel of judges reviewed each presentation and only the top 30% of 4-H Youth won the Award of Excellence, the top ribbon in this contest. ) I'd say Daniel, Trent, and Lora represented their club, community, and county well!

Ryder Playground swing set updated with new and modern seats.

I went to the playground here in Ryder beside the Ryder Community Club/Gym and took a picture of the updated swing set. It has all new and modern seats for the kids to use and enjoy courtesy of a Community Club fundraiser and the talented labor of Dave Kimball.

There will be NO soup and sandwich in August and the food pantry hours will be changing. You can check the Ryder Community Club Food Pantry website for more information or all 578-5876

Upcoming Events:

Aug. 14: Worship services at Ryder’s Calvary Church at 10:30 a.m.
Worship services at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Roseglen at 9 a.m.
Worship services at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Makoti at 10:30 a.m.

It looks like this is the end of the news for this week. Stay cool and watch out for the farmers moving their combines, trucks and all the other farm equipment.

Ryder News Aug. 4, 2016

Ryder News for Aug. 4, 2016

Plaza Ambulance Service needs EMRs and EMTs for their ambulance service. EMTs $35 and EMRs $25 (per call).
Classes starting in September at the Plaza Fire Hall. For more information please call Farren Wold at 701-331-3817 or Tari Berry at 701-497-3465.

The Ryder-Makoti Ambulance will be ceasing service on Aug. 15th unless enough volunteers are found and the service re-applies for its license. Even tho the ambulance will no longer be on call, the area will not be without service. Our district will be divided among Garrison-Max, Parshall, Plaza and Minot.

The reason for ceasing service is because ND requires all squads in the state to be available 24/7 and ours is only operating at about  95%. One problem is that it is  hard to find volunteers to be available during the day although almost everyone is available at night. If the communities of Ryder and Makoti step up, the ambulance service may have a future. There will be EMR and EMT classes every Wednesday night in Plaza starting in November and they need a class of 6-10 to have enough volunteers. You may call Jody Reinisch at 701-758-2271 for more information.

Remember the benefit supper the Community Club sponsored so new playground equipment could be purchased? Well, there have been updates made to the swings, etc. David Kimball installed new seats on the swings and did a few other things to spruce up the playground. I was going to get a picture but the storm we are having this evening (Sunday) prohibited me from doing so and I had to send news in early due to Dr. appointment on Monday. Maybe I can capture a picture and have it in next week's news.

James Johnson of Arnold, MO was wondering if any of my readers remember Brynhild Haugland (July 28, 1905 – August 9, 1998). He said, “I noticed this because she passed away on my Birthday. She always won because everyone (Dem, Rep, Ind) voted for her. My dad used to say I am a staunch Democrat, but I will always vote for Haugland. She was a North Dakota Republican Party politician who was well known for being one of the first female legislators in the North Dakota Legislative Assembly, as well as for being the longest serving state legislator in the history of the United States because of her continuous 52-year tenure in the North Dakota House of Representatives.

There will be NO soup and sandwich in August and the food pantry hours will be changing. You can check the Ryder Community Food Pantry website for more information in August or call 578-5876.

BINGO is cancelled for the month of August!

Upcoming Events:

Aug. 7: Worship services at Ryder’s Calvary Church at 10:30 a.m.

Worship services at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Makoti at 9 a.m.

Worship services at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder at 10:30 a.m..

Aug. 10: Makoti Senior Center barbeque at 6 p.m. at the center. Burgers and brats and buns will be furnished and the rest is potluck.

That’s all I have for this week. Have a great newsworthy week and I will “see” you next week same time, same place.
