Ryder News for Oct. 5, 2017

I have a correction to last week’s news. The Ryder Museum sign in honor of Phyllis Mueller was paid for with memorial donations after her death, not from her estate. Sorry for any misinformation on this.

Jean Ike Patterson, 67, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Sanford hospital in Fargo. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Mabel Ike. She is survived by her husband, Joseph; children: Holly (Ryan) Dewitz, Kristi (Jason) Reinke: 6 grandchildren; mother, Mabel Ike; sisters; Sandra (Verle) Anderson, Wendy (Lydell) Wohlk.
Our sympathy goes out to the family.

We had a full house Sunday as Staci and Johnny came out and Rick and Levi came over too. The boys played and Kenny and Rick put in a new kitchen faucet for me while Staci and I supervised!

Don Haugen called me and he said that this Hans Anderson that I mentioned in the Sept. 21st paper might be the Hans Anderson that lived on his farm in years past like the early 1900’s. His dad went to school with one of Hans Anderson’s kids and he was wondering if it was the same Hans Anderson and whatever became of the family.

The following is out of the Blue Hill binder that is in the Ryder Museum. There are lots of binders there with different areas in them such as Hiddenwood and others. The following is a poem that was written by Miss Bertha Spicker before 1920 when she was a teacher at the Blue Hill Consolidated School. She later married Andrew Anderson and lived in Ryder for many years. She was the pianist at the Ryder Church of God for many years.

“Our Blue Hills.
Beyond the horseshoe valley, Beyond the prairie wide, The Blue Hills tall like sentinels, Loom up on every side.
Against the crimson glory, Of morning’s early dawn, Their summits wrapped in hazy mists, Stand spectre like and wan.
How often from this watch tower, The country side I’ve scanned. Beheld the blessings of our God, Spread out with lavish hand.
The wide extended grain fields, Of barley, wheat and rye, With here and there a shining slough,To greet my wandering eye.
I see in the vales below me, The farmstead’s stately mein; Above, a dome of azure blue, Below a sea of green.
The pastures and the meadows, Are decked in summer’s sheen, While far out in the distance, Four busy towns are seen.
Thus, when the day is weary, And irksome grows its care, Unto the hills I lift my eyes, My help shall come from there.
And so upon this vantage ground, I gaze with rapture mute. Thank God for North Dakota, And for the Blue Hill Butte.”
