Ty Cooper from Douglas, a certified instructor helps out Stetson Brandvold in the practice session.
Kids from the Rocky Acres 4-H and Prairie Ryders 4-H attended the Ward County Schauer Archery Shoot on Saturday, Sept 30, near Carpio. There were 2 flights. The 1st Flight ventured out in the morning ending with lunch at noon. The 2nd Flight had lunch before heading out on their adventure. Bows were provided or the kids could bring their own. The Archery Shoot started out with finding a bow that fit them, learning how to properly use and shoot a few practice shots. The kids were split into groups of 5-6 along with a certified instructor and walked a coulee looking for about 10 stations of 3-D animals targets to shoot at. Scoring points as they went, to win prizes donated by local businesses and people.
Attending were: Issac Sherven, Tate Heer, Blake Rustad, Carson Rockwell, Stetson Brandvold, Lanie Rockwell, Ella Sherven, Hattie Heer, Shelsey Brandvold, Alivia
Sherven and Lora Rockwell. Attending but not in picture were: instructor Sue Williams, Raelyn, Trent and Garrett Williams, Ben and Gabe Scheresky and Jayden and Caylob Whanger.

Kids attending from Rocky Acres 4-H and Prairie Ryders 4-H clubs who attended Archery Shoot were: Top Row. L-R: Issac Sherven, Tate Heer, Blake Rustad, Carson Rockwell and Stetson Brandvold.
Bottom Row. L-R:  Lanie Rockwell, Ella Sherven, Hattie Heer, Shelsey Brandvold, Alivia Sherven and Lora Rockwell.
Kathy Kimball's oldest living brother, Donald Cree, 85 years old, of Burlington, passed away on October 9th.  There are only 4 girls left out of the 11 siblings.

A group of Ryder/Makoti “boys” gathered together to help Kirby Mueller celebrate his 60th birthday. L-R: Dave Lampert (San Francisco), Dean Rubbelke (Minot), Kirby Mueller (Ryder 2.0), Gary Hanson (Merrill, WI), Bruce Lampert (Berthoud, CO).

In an email from Kirby Mueller he says, “A group of old Ryder/Makoti boys gathered in Wisconsin to help me celebrate my 60th (that is old). Pictured from left to right are Dave Lampert (San Francisco), Dean Rubbelke (Minot), myself (Ryder 2.0) , Gary Hanson (Merrill, WI) and Bruce Lampert (Berthoud, CO).
We tailgated and attended a baseball game at Brewer Stadium the night of my birthday. We recovered in time to tailgate and attend the Packers/Bears game in Green Bay the next night. The entire group would like to tell Gary how much they appreciate showing us an outstanding time in the Cheese state.”

Friends gathered at Mueller Lake to celebrate Kirby Mueller’s birthday. L-R: Brad Haugen, Bruce Lampert, Tami Haugen, Leslie Walters, Cindy Mueller, Dave Lampert.
In another email from Kirby, he says, “Brad and Tami Haugen, Bruce and Dave Lampert and Leslie Walter motored out to Mueller Lake last Sunday for dinner in the loft. Cindy served spaghetti to the crew for my birthday. Yes...you can celebrate a birthday for two consecutive weeks.
Cindy used my mom's sauce recipe which has been passed down and is a traditional birthday request in my family. After a birthday sleep over many years ago, Brian Bofenkamp told his mom the next day that Phyllis made "macaroni with red gravy". What a glowing testimonial.”

There will be a Baby Shower for Juria Wiechmann on Sunday, Oct. 22 from 1-3 p.m. at the Makoti Senior Citizens.

Memories Of My Childhood In Blue Hill by Myrtle Mathieson Thue from Howard, SD. This was written in Aug. 1969.

The homesite of the Linnertz ranch was back of the large hill on the present farm. It was built here to obscure it from the eyes of horse thieves who were a terror of the times. The Glennon ranch at Roseglen was the nearest neighbor. The old Fort Berthold Trail passed it to the northwest. I believe a remnant of the old trail still exists, passing across a corner of the Jackson farm.
Mrs. Linnertz and the children would go to Minot for a week each summer. I recall Joseph Linnertz saying that as a small child he was somewhat confused, not being able to differentiate between Minot and heaven.
It was to the Linnertz ranch home that the Locator from the Land Office in Minot brought the early land-seekers. Here they found a warm welcome with food and shelter for the overnight stay.

More to come next week.

The Happy Hour Senior Citizens is a club in Ryder established in 1975. The thought of being a “Senior Citizen” turns some people off. The name may be a little misleading as the club is open to those age 55 and older. (now you know 55 is not old anymore). There are some interesting activities on the horizon but the club is always open to more ideas. New members may have the inspiration and ideas needed for us to try new things.
We meet again Nov. 6, 2017 at noon. A meal is served with a short business meeting following where ideas are shared. Our November meeting is the start of our new year. Our officers have been elected ( so you don’t have to worry about getting nominated for an office). Now we are encouraging more people to join us for a Happy Hour! Come and visit and check the club out...who knows, you may even decide to join. We need more inspiration and ideas, can you help us? Oh by the way, the meal is free and is delicious. We all get stuffed!

Why is the letter W, in English, called double U? Shouldn't it be called double V?
