Ryder News for June 29, 2017

It has been so cold and windy this weekend that we couldn’t even get any camping in and I just love going camping and resting, reading and watching tv while everyone else is in the boat fishing.
I found out on Wednesday that I have shingles and I itch. No nerve pain (knock on wood) but sure itches. I also heard that getting shingles is sometimes a result of chemo. Great...wonder how many more times I will get them!

Phyllis Jean Mueller, 86, Minot passed away Monday, June 19, 2017 in the care of Trinity Homes. Phyllis was born August 11, 1930 to William and Emma (Erb) Sorenson in Roseglen, ND. She was joined in marriage to Donald Mueller.  She is survived by sons Keven, Kirby and Darik, eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to family and friends.

Lois Rustad, 82, Bismarck, formerly of Roseglen, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at her home. Lois was born to Melvin and Helen (Timm) Bjornholt. She married Robert Rustad in 1953 and raised 2 children. She is survived by son, Ronald (Jackie) Rustad; daughter, Bonnie (Jerry) Lorenz; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandson and 1 brother.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to family and friends.

Ryder High School Class of 1967 held a fun and entertaining 50-year class reunion at the Ryder Senior Center on June 17, 2017. Eleven class members attended the reunion along with seven spouses and guests. Attendees enjoyed touring Ryder Historical Museum hosted by director Faye Karna. David and Kathy Kimball of Ryder catered the reunion feast enjoyed later. Class member Sharon Kellett created beautiful centerpieces to decorate banquet tables. Reunion events included reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, an opening prayer by class member Larry Johansen, and a moment of silence for five deceased class members (Dennis Haugen, Dennis Johansen, Randy Morris, Khylene (Mueller) Patera and Elliott Nelson). After eating, class members looked at memorabilia and old photos concluding an afternoon and evening of reminiscing, stories and laughter. Susan Mahoney presented Vietnam War Commemorative lapel pins to Lee Cunningham and Terry Johansen who served during the Vietnam Era 1955-1975. Susan conducted a similar ceremony in Ryder during the annual Memorial Day ceremony held by L. C. Jensen Post 99 of The American Legion. Classmates congratulated Shirley and Max Bezanson on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary celebrated a day later on June 18th. RHS Class of 1967 appreciates everyone who contributed to a successful and memorable 50-year reunion. Class motto: "The past forever gone, the future still our own."

Roseanne Cunningham and Phyllis Simmons at the Ryder Museum.

Faye Karna says, “It was fun having these two gals in the Ryder museums at the same time. Roseanne Cunningham and Phyllis Simmons are full of past history and attended Ryder High. Roseanne moved after her junior year; but Phyllis graduated from Ryder. It was so fun visiting with them. Wished they both lived here as they would be such assets.”

Ryder’s Rosehill Cemetery

The Ryder Cemetery has had an update. I wanted to share a picture with you former Ryder folks. Notice how the evergreens have been trimmed and a new fence added. Surely was needed and deeply appreciated. It looks so nice when you come driving into Ryder on #28 from the north!

Don Haugen was the man responsible for all the updates to our Ryder Rosehill Cemetery and he spent many thousands of dollars to make it look as nice as it does. He built the new fence, put up a building on the east end to house two new lawn mowers and has hired a lady out of Minot to come out and mow and cut cemetery twice a month for $300. He also had the road graded and fixed up. So if anyone wants to donate to help pay for the mowing and upkeep on the cemetery you may send to St. John’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 57, Ryder, ND 58779 or Calvary Church, P.O. Box 58, Ryder, ND 58779. The Ryder community appreciates very much Don, the work that you have done on our cemetery!

Ryder News for June 22, 2017

Shelsey and Julie Brandvold attended the TCCU picnic and took some pictures for me. I had planned on going but my Dr. changed my chemo appointment to Thursday instead of Friday so that kind of ruined my plans! Julie also did a nice little write up about the TCCU picnic.

Allen Janz and Brenda Novodvorsky at the registration table.

TCCU patrons enjoying a bite to eat and some visiting at the picnic in the park.
About 65 local residents attended the Town and Country Credit Union Member Appreciation Picnic held in the Ryder City Park on Thursday. Three guys (Mark, Matt and Brett) from the Minot location came out and cooked up brats and hotdogs on the grill. Brenda Novodvorsky and Robyn Erdman served chips, cookies, pop and water and welcomed the guest with nice giveaways and a chance to win a gas fire pit. The winner of the fire pit was Kathy Kimball from Ryder. It was a beautiful day to sit and visit with all the locals and have a bite to eat.

Shelby Huston and her fiddle.

Mike Haugen, Kenny Fjeldahl and others manning the raffle prize table.

Kenny and I along with the McGrath’s attended the 115th annual Hiddenwood Picnic. There were well over 100 people registered so there was a lot of visiting going on. John Warner was the preacher for the morning service in the little church and there were also speakers in the big building so others could enjoy it as well.
After the service then it was time to eat...what a variety of food for this potluck picnic. I am sure everything tasted wonderful but I didn’t have enough room in my stomach to sample everything! After everyone was totally stuffed by all the good food it was time for the talent portion of the program. Shane Larson was the MC again this year and told a few jokes and then introduced Shelby Huston, 2016 International Fiddle Champion and Minnesota State Fiddle Champion. Her dad accompanied her on his guitar. She was fantastic and so young having just graduated from high school.
There were lots of door prize giveaways and I think everyone got something! They had great raffle prizes again this year which only cost $1 per ticket. Some of the prizes to be raffled were: State Fair Pass, Hostfest tickets, tabletop electric grill, electric griddle, a wooden sign and then of course some kids prizes.
Again this year as always were the foot races with all participants receiving a quarter and then the quarter toss into the grass so the kids could search for quarters. Hopefully their parents checked them real well afterwards for wood ticks!

Spring work is in full swing with tractors humming day and night, making up for lost time. A few fields are being left for later crops.
The weather turned real warm over the weekend with grass and trees getting green and summer-like appearance all around. Lilacs, chokecherries and plum trees are just starting to bud out, and lilac blooms will be considerably later this year than ever before, Last year the lilacs were in full bloom on Decoration Day.
The school bell and the flag were put away Monday afternoon at the end of another school term and Tuesday and Wednesday the seventh and eighth graders took their final exams. Thursday the pupils, patrons and teacher and friends were at the John Linnertz grove for their picnic. Early Friday morning Mr. Nelson, the teacher, left for his home near Cumberland, Wisconsin where he will spend the summer at his parental home. He will do graduate work at University of North Dakota this autumn.
School Picnic: Mothers of Blue Hill School pupils met Thursday at the school to plan the school picnic which will be held again at the John Linnertz grove, this year on May 25. School closes May 26.
Mrs. Carl Anderson and Mrs. Donald Anderson and Donna Mae returned Thursday from a week in Fargo and Minnesota with relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Johnson and children (Frances and Darold) motored to Parshall Saturday to visit the Charley Severance family.
Harry Peterson and Don returned Saturday from Forsyth, Montana where they bought a registered sire for their herd of Herefords.
The telephone lines have been playing off again on again the last few days with the linemen out every day trying to locate “that little trouble”.  Residents here can’t get the Ryder operator.
Grant Witt visited with Robert Nelson at Blue Hill School Thursday morning and posted election notices for the June 6 Blue Hill school election.
Donald Anderson bought the buildings on the land known to many as the Dickinson farm and later occupied by the Alfred Zahnow family. Don will move the buildings to his own farm.
Henry Bofenkamp, the Blue Hill Township assessor, has been making his yearly calls.

Ryder News for June 15, 2017

Not much news for this week..I guess all the “good” stuff happened last weekend! Oh well, the Hiddenwood Picnic is coming up and I will have news AND pictures!

Speaking of the Hiddenwood Picnic..It’s here! This coming Sunday, Father’s Day is the big day. The 115th Hiddenwood Old Settlers Annual Picnic will be held on Sunday June 18th, 2017 on the Hiddenwood picnic grounds 8 miles south of Makoti on County Road #9. There will be an All Faiths Church Service at 11 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch (plates and utensils provided). The program following lunch features the talent of Shelby Huston, 2016 International Fiddle Champion and Minnesota State Fiddle Champion. Other talent is also welcome on the stage. The Hiddenwood Ladies’ Famous Pie will be for sale after the program.

John and Janice Warner will be celebrating 100 years at the Warner farm on June 23rd with a picnic at 5 p.m. and a short program. Merritt and Annie Warner were married in April of 1917 and homesteaded on what is still the Warner home quarter. Merritt and Annie had three sons - Murray, Leon and Glen. Lots of changes happen in 100 years and we would like to share the memories. Everyone's invited!

The Ryder Museum has recently added a new exhibit on a child’s eye view of Christmas and is looking for classic toys previous to 1960 or home-made toys and games to add to the display. We are in special need of boys toys. Currently under construction are new exhibits about the history of the Ryder Fire Department and Ted’s Garage. In the planning stage is a new exhibit of a blacksmith shop as it would have appeared about 1920.

The museum is scheduled to be open to the public on Saturday, June 17th 1-4 in honor of the Reunion of the Class of ’67 and Sunday June 25th for the Peterson Picnic. Saturday, July 15th, the museum will be open from 3-6 to coincide with the Bullarama. It is also planned to be open on Sunday July 23, 1-4. Times for August and September will be determined later. Appointments for special tours can be made by calling Faye Karna at 758-2527 or John Warner at 726-5663.

The lack of volunteers is the limiting factor for keeping the museum open. If you would like to be involved in this little gem on the prairie, call Faye or John to find-out what you can do!

Also a special appreciation to Dwight Paulson from Madison, WI  and Roger and Kaye Haugen from Des Lacs, ND for the generous monetary donation to help fund
our projects and upkeep of our museum. We greatly appreciate every donation!

Dene Karna

One of the Hiddenwood Sportsman’s club's projects they are working on is to purchase and install a granite Memorial bench in honor of Dene Karna. Dene was an outstanding member of the Hiddenwood Sportsmen Club and our community.
