Ryder News for March 30, 2017

Dishing up at the Family Fun Night spaghetti supper.

Kenny and I attended Family Fun Night with the Spaghetti Supper at the Community Club/Gym. I think they served between 60-100 people so it was a rather disappointing turnout. The free will offering will go towards the Community Club building upkeep. The food was great!

Kids enjoying the bouncy houses during family fun night

The Community Club has purchased two bouncy houses for entertainment for the kids while other functions are going on. The houses will remain in the Community Club building.

There will be a general church cleaning on March 31, at 5 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

There will be a bridal shower for Jamie Larson, bride-to-be of Tyrone Deutsch at the Makoti Senior Citizens Center on April 9 at 2 p.m.

Stetson and Shelsey Brandvold brought over a plate of goodies that they made in their club the Rocky Acres 4-H Club. Yum!

Kaylee Magandy

First Grader Kaylee Magandy received a Graham Greidanus Academic Award (For Spelling) for the month of March, for the 1st Grade class at Bob Callies Elementary in Garrison.  Kaylee also received a Perfect Attendance Award.  Kaylee is the Great Granddaughter of Grace Magandy of Ryder, the Granddaughter of Alvin and Joetta Magandy of Douglas, and the daughter of Chris and Carrie Magandy of Garrison.

Rod’s 60th birthday celebration: Kathy Kallestad, Steven Olson, Rod Kallestad.

Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad traveled to the Pizza Ranch in Minot for supper on Thursday, March 23rd, to celebrate Rod's 60th birthday. To help celebrate were Jenny Brossart and Kylie Johnson, Cindy, Henry, and Lucy Oberdick, and Steven Olson all of Minot, Karen and Edwin Olson of Douglas, and Diane Roland of Garrison.  Rod says he appreciates all the wonderful birthday wishes in cards, texts, emails, and on Facebook.  Turning 60 isn't so bad!

Shelsey Brandvold and Tony Payan competed in the 5th & 6th Grade Music Festival in Washburn.

Tony Payan and Shelsey Brandvold competed in the 5th & 6th Grade Music Festival in Washburn. Tony played a Baritone solo and played in two group ensembles and received blue ribbons on each. He is the son of Anthony and Janeth Payan of Ryder. Shelsey played a clarinet solo, a group ensemble and a band trio. She also sang a solo and participated in two vocal groups. Shesley came home with 4 blue and 2 red ribbons. She is the daughter of Lee and Julie Brandvold of Ryder. They attend the Max Public School.

James Phillip Bowen, 72, of New Bern, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, North Carolina. Mr. Bowen was born in 1944 on the family farm in Ryder, North Dakota, the son of the late Jim and Phyllis Bowen. He graduated from Ryder High School in Ryder, North Dakota.

Three-generation picture of the Roseann Cunningham family: Sarah (Roseann’s daughter) holding Abby, Aaron Proctor and grandmother Roseann.

I have a three-generation picture that was taken in March 2017.  It shows members of the Roseann Cunningham family. It is of her granddaughter, Abby, who is 5 months old, Abby’s parents, Sarah (Roseann’s daughter) and Aaron Proctor and Grandmother Roseann. Roseann is called Sue now. Sue’s parents were Georgia and Verr Cunningham, so she was a sister to Larry.

Ryder News Mar. 23, 2017

Ryder News for Mar. 23, 2017

I hope everyone got their fill of all things green on St. Patrick’s Day. There were drinks, food, clothes, hair, and of course some kind of green people! I think I had enough for this year.

I have a few death notices to add to the news:
Charles Jack Liffrig passed away March 11, 2017 at the Maple View Memory Care Center in Grand Forks.

Eleanor Petrick of Makoti passed away on March 6, 2017 in a Minot nursing home.

Our sympathy goes out to the families.

After today, Monday, I have 2 radiation treatments left and then some follow up stuff. Of course, I still have chemo and oral cancer pills.

Jade Hagen had a 4.0 GPA at the Fayetteville, NC Community College where she is attending in preparation for her degree in Mortuary Science. This was for the fall semester. She is the wife of Ryan Hagen (daughter-in-law of Marvin and Maureen of Ryder), She is also pregnant with twins and the latest ultrasound showed that the babies are doing great! Congratulations Jade, you are doing a fantastic job!

I received the following letter the other day.

“Dear Sue Bradley - -

My name is Tricia Byrne and I have a strong connection to Ryder, ND.

Faye Karna of the Ryder Historical Society was kind enough to share your contact information with me after I'd asked her if she knew who owned the house in which my grandparents, mother, and aunt and uncles lived back in 1930 ... give or take several additional years.  My grandparents were Carl and Maude Petersen and my grandfather worked at the town creamery.  His children were Loretta; Carl, Jr.; my mother Blanche; and Bob.  All the children less Bob graduated from the school ... now closed ... in Ryder.

The attached photo of the home on Daily Street where they lived are from family reunions: The photo is from 2015 and left to right -- my brother, my cousin Peter (from AZ), me, my cousin Tom (from Bismarck), and my cousin Kay (from Bismarck).  You may wonder how I know my family lived there and it's because my mother showed me the house when she attended a class reunion many years ago and also because family friend George Officer, who was a boyhood friend of my uncle Bob told me.

REQUEST:  Anyway, I'm writing you because we are having another family reunion this year.  I was wondering if you would permit us to one at a time look around the first floor of the house?  If not, would you consider opening the front door and letting us look inside from the front step?  This may sound like an odd request, but it would mean a great deal to a number of us as a way to feel a little closer to the parents we miss.  If you think any of this might be ok with you, I'd gladly write you a check to compensate you for your time.  We are a trustworthy group consisting of a research scientist, retired military officer, rancher, realtor, attorney and our spouses.

However, if you don't feel comfortable with letting us inside or permitting us to look inside from the front and / or back doors, of course, I respect your wishes.

We are likely to be seen out in the front yard again smiling before a camera.  :-)  The day we will visit will be Friday, 14 July 2017.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

All my best wishes to you.

Sincerely,

Tricia Byrne”

Well, I was stumped as to the whereabouts of this house was and just to whom it belonged to until I saw the pictures! Guess what...it is what we call the Paulson House and I am the owner!!! I plan on meeting with them this summer and make their dreams come true.

Relatives of Carl and Maude Peterson who used to own the Paulson House: Bob, Peter, Tricia, Tom, Kay. Picture taken in front of house.

Stan “Dewey” and Eloise Hjelmstad

I have a picture sent to me by Faye Karna showing Stan “Dewey” and Eloise Hjelmstad on March 13, 2017. They had celebrated Eloise’s birthday a few days earlier. They want to say “Hello” to all those who remember the Hjelmstads from the earlier Ryder days.

The band FURNACE at Max Civic Club

Four area teens who are members of the band FURNACE are Remington Bigelow from Makoti, Haylee Rustad from Roseglen, Kaylee Capp from Max and Daniel Starks from Ryder. They have an awesome time making music together and recently provided entertainment for the Max Civic Club.

Old Roseglen News by Mrs. Earl Pederson

"Dennis Hill’s Birthday Party.
February 6th was an important day for Dennis Hill who celebrated his 4th birthday that day. His mother, Mrs. Kenneth invited Dennis’s Sunday School class and the mamas over for the afternoon party.
The table was set for 13 little folks who found special favors at their places as they sat down to eat birthday cake and ice cream, and enjoy watching Dennis blow out the four cowboy candles on his birthday cake.
Dennis received many nice gifts; among them was a bowl containing two lovely gold fish. We’re wondering if they’re still there! What with a two year old sister and a five year old brother to help take care of them, they should survive. Anyway Dennis was a mighty happy boy when he opened his package containing the roller skates from mommy and daddy, his eyes fairly bulged. Oh! To be four again!
Small fry and their names who attended the party were Roger and Patti Cummings, and Miriam; Gerald and Gardell Giffey, and Olive Mae; Kandis and Kyle Giffey, and Venetia; Donny Giffey and Avis; Rodney and Garth Hill, and Dodo; Van and Brent Pederson and Evelyn; and Dennis’s grandmother, Edith Hill and his brother, Daryl and sister, Becky."

Ryder News Mar. 16, 2017

Ryder News for March 16, 2017

I am going to try and write the news after having radiation and a unit of blood. So if you see any mistakes, blame it on my brain not working very good at the moment.

Ryder resident Jesse Miles was injured Monday in a rollover of the semi he was driving 4 miles northwest of Glen Ullin. The State Highway Patrol said Miles was going south on Highway 49 pulling a trailer with anhydrous ammonia when the semi drifted off the west side of the road, went into the ditch and overturned. Miles was taken to Bismarck for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The accident is under investigation.

Riley Janz and his Max team mates. 3rd place win!

Congratulations guys! 3rd place! Riley Janz # 33 son of Kent and Heather. Congratulations to the JH boys on a great season!

Alyssa Johansen was in the 2017 Senior Spotlight and has done many outstanding things for the Max FFA

Remington Bigelow and Daniel Starks entertaining Makoti Seniors

Daniel Starks and Remington Bigelow had a great time providing entertainment at the Makoti Senior Citizens Meeting last Friday. Their performance included a variety of musical styles with songs from yesteryear. Daniel sang and played guitar and Remington played the cajon, a box-shaped percussion instrument that he sat on and provided rhythm by slapping the front or side faces of the cajon with his hands. Remington also played a piano medley. It was a fun time for the boys and the audience.

Glider made by Ralph Schellenbaum

The following news/pictures were supplied to the Ryder Historical Society’s records by Stan Hjelmstad in 2017 and are being shared here by Faye Karna our Museumist.
This shows a glider made by Ralph Schellenbaum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He worked as a physicist at Sandi Base’s atomic workshop. He was always into model building and flew gliders as a hobby. He is the son of Saul and Nellie Ruehl Schellenbaum. Saul was a 1918 Ryder High grad and Nellie taught school at Ryder. Nellie’s dad, Mr. Ruehl, ran a small creamery in Ryder. Saul “Si” ran the Ryder Bar and later worked at the Ryder Co-op Creamery when Ray Olson was manager.

Ralph Schellenbaum at age 28

This next picture is Ralph Schellenbaum at the age of 28 when he was at Concordia College. He graduated from Ryder High in 1945 and died at the age of 62. At the time of death he was survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons.

Some old Roseglen News by Mrs. Earl Pederson:

Sandra Kolden who is attending Concordia College spent six days at the home of her parents, the Chris Kolden’s during the semester recess. Sunday her parents took her to Moorhead and they were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Morris Snippen. The Koldens attended a paint convention in Fargo on Monday and enroute home on Tuesday they stopped in Bismarck and listened in on the State Legislature session there. Mr. and Mrs. Amund Bosman are at Grand Forks where they will visit for some time with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Bossman and sons.
