Ryder News June 30, 2016

Ryder News for June 30, 2016

Andrea Skarphol and her horse, Bailey, participated in Ward County Achievement days in 4-H on Monday. They received 2 reserve, 6 blue, 3 red, and one lonely white. They are exhausted and are happy to be home in bed/pasture tonight.

The Makoti Senior Center will not have a meeting or meal in July due to Makoti birthday in the park on July 13.  They will have a  bbq at the center on August 10.  Burgers and Brats furnished, the rest is potluck.

Charlene (Chickie Knutson) and her husband Gene made the trip back to Ryder to visit her old home place and get together with some friends and classmates. She met up with Sue Bradley, Faye Karna, Richie Becker, Daryl Simmons, Ron and Muriel Peterson and Claudette Brandt on Saturday. We all had the corn chowder and cornbread that was served at the Ryder Community Club/Gym that day. She also took a tour of the museums. She and her husband had spent a previous day going about town and taking pictures.

Adopted children of Glenn and Lana Olson.
I have to share this Father's’ Day gift. Glenn and Lana Olson adopted 5 children and for  Father's’ Day they gave him a ruler that had the statement, “Your love is unmeasurable”. This says so much about how they love having a good home and parents. Glenn Olson is the son of the former Ernest and Christine Olson and he and wife live in Billings, MT.

Restored Camaro belonging to David Debertin.

David Debertin formerly of Parshall and now of Plaza and also Kentucky says, "My frost green 1969 Camaro is back from restoration. I am the original owner too. I ordered it from Rensch Garage in Makoti in December 1968, and it was delivered there February 8, 1969.”  It still has the original engine as restored..the odometer shows 64,000 miles which is accurate. He said he tried to put it back as close as it was when delivered ! He is pretty proud of that  car.

Doug Wurtz had the following to say about the Hiddenwood Picnic on June 19th. “I had the great fun yesterday to serve as MC for the 114th annual Hiddenwood Picnic held at the Old Settler's grounds on the south bank of Hiddenwood Lake. This tradition started in 1903 as a gathering of the homesteaders of Gate and Hiddenwood Townships in McLean and Ward County, the annual picnic has continued, without interruption, for 114 years.
It serves a dual role of remembering the homesteaders who broke sod around the lake and also to honor all the fathers on Father's Day. The day, as is the tradition, began with an all-faiths worship service in the Hiddenwood Old Settler's chapel followed by a noon potluck lunch.

The afternoon was busy with kid's races, a talent program featuring Kristine Shafer at the keyboard and the prize drawings where 150 prizes, donated by area merchants, were given away.” On to #115!

Stetson Brandvold with his projects and participation ribbons.

Shelsey Brandvold with her garden container and Grand Champion Ribbon.
Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold attended Ward County 4-H Achievement Days this past week in Minot.  Stetson is a Cloverbud, he made 6 projects (pinecone key holder, golf ball ladybugs, button art, Tom the tulle wreath, container garden and garden rock markers).  He received a colorful participation ribbon on all of his projects. Shelsey made 7 projects (pinecone key holder, golf ball ladybugs, button art, Tom the tulle wreath, container garden, framed photo and welded a cross).  She received 6 blue ribbons and a nice purple Grand Champion on her Container Garden.  It is fun to watch them learn and grow through 4-H.

In the spring of 2006, Kirby Mueller (and friends) gathered old lumber from the original Mueller farmhouse, the hog barn, tool shed, and pump house, a batch of old telegraph poles from along the farm road, a lot of baling wire and some duct tape. With this collection of material, they built a cabin (fondly known as “The Chateau”) on the Mueller farmstead adjacent to Mueller Lake (named a North Dakota Centennial Farm in 2015). The project was finished just in time for the Ryder Centennial. This past weekend it was time for a 10th year anniversary celebration. Joining Kirby and Cindy for the festivities were Cody Mueller and Josie from Scottsdale, Kyle Mueller and Murika from Fargo, Kip Mueller and Becca from Minneapolis, Gus Mueller and Karen from Bismarck, and Phyllis Mueller from Minot. Each attendee at the event was presented with a Kyle Mueller hand-crafted bottle opener (see photo), made from antique Soo Line railroad spikes collected along the Mueller property. Who knew such a shiny object was hidden under the decades of dirt and rust? As the day went on, the functionality of the finished product also was proven to be excellent.
