Ryder News for May 5, 2016

Kenny and I drove out to our farm land the other evening and wow….the area is full of wildlife on the move. We saw moose, lots of deer, pheasants and big and little rabbits. I am wondering if the start of farming has them moving to new quarters!

Lucy Oberdick baptism
On Sunday, April 24, 2016, Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad of Garrison traveled to Zion Lutheran Church in Minot for their granddaughter's baptism.  Lucy Eleanor Oberdick, daughter of Wil and Cindy (Olson) Oberdick of Minot was baptized by Pastor Nathan Muggas and sponsors for Lucy's baptism were her aunt and uncle Jenny (Blowers-Johnson) and Kyle Brossart, her uncle Steven Olson, and her cousin Kylie Johnson, all of Minot.  Jenny and Kyle Brossart hosted lunch afterwards at their home.  Those present for the baptism and lunch were also Lucy's big brother Henry Konrad Oberdick, grandma and grandpa Pamela and Shawn Brooks of Surrey, great grandma and grandpa Karen and Edwin Olson of Douglas, and Joelle Forschen of Minot.
That evening, Kathy's son Steven Olson's 24th birthday was celebrated at Ebenezeer's Eatery and Irish Pub in Minot with supper and birthday cake.

Gramma Marcia (Marcia Walhaug) entertainer at St. John’s Mother’s Day Luncheon
80 area ladies attended St. John’s Mother’s Day Luncheon on Sunday, May 1st. We were all treated to a variety of salads and other goodies plus each lady received a little May basket full of candy to celebrate May Day. After everyone was finished with their meal, we all went upstairs to be entertained by Marcia Walhaug or rather her alter personality, Gramma Marcia. We were well entertained as she said Gramma Marcia is a self-proclaimed “old maid retired schoolteacher” with a heart full of love for the Women of the ELCA. Gramma Marcia sang a song to lutefisk, also one about lefse. She was full of jokes that left everyone in stitches.
Marcia Walhaug taught in Williston for 32 years before retiring, she now lives in Palermo. Retirement gives her time to explore her other passions; entertaining as a variety of characters, knitting prayer shawls, sewing quilts and spending time with friends and family.

After the Mother’s Day Luncheon, the Ladies Aid presented a beautiful quilt that our St. John’s quilters had made to our graduating senior, Andrea Skarphol.

Farm Rescue equipment to help Bryon Schenfisch.
Farm Rescue workers Kenneth Chyle and Emil Baranko.

Farm Rescue came to the "rescue" of Bryon Schenfisch this week as Bryon has injured his back and is unable to do any farming this year. I was able to get a few pictures of the equipment they are using this spring (2 big air seeders) and also had a chance to visit with the two fellows (Kenneth Chyle from Kentucky and Emil Baranko from Illinois) who are running the equipment. Scott Tellefson from Makoti is also helping out with the farming.

The Makoti American Legion Auxiliary will meet on Monday, May 9 at 7:00 PM at the Senior Center. This is the planning meeting for the Memorial Day dinner, so please come to help us get ready. Memorial Day services and dinner this year are on Monday, May 30th at 11 a.m. in the Makoti Legion Hall.

Terry and DelRaye Johansen went on a road trip to Polson, Montana, to attend the wedding of Heather Knutson and Brad Walter. At Havre they were stopped by a heavy snowstorm with slushy roads and 50 mph winds. After staying an extra day, the sun came out and roads were dry. The snow-covered mountains were breath-taking and beautiful, as was the drive around Flathead Lake.
The Rockies were the backdrop for Heather and Brad’s beautiful wedding. Heather is the mayor of Polson and manager of Country Pasta. She is the youngest daughter of Dean and Linda (McGuire) Knutson, close friends and former Ryder and Makoti graduates. Their son, Cory, and brothers Greg and Scott and sister, Vickie and families all live at Polson. Their daughter, Heidi and Lee and family live nearby in Kalispell. It was great to see so many friends and family.
They stopped at Kalispell for a quick visit with Bob and Lois Lindquist and Bruce and Kayleen Fredrickson. Lois and Bruce are Terry’s cousins. It was a fast, but fun, weekend trip.
