Ryder
News for May 12, 2016
I hope all the moms out
there in Readerville had a great Mother's Day. I did! Kenny bought me 2 plants
and a big old planter and Johnny bought me a candle. Staci said she knows what
she wants to get me but is waiting to get it! I also had a nice visit with Rick
and his family.
Kenny and I and our 4
dogs spent the weekend at the McGrath's taking care of their house, dogs and
Johnny. It was a lot of fun; Johnny kept us busy playing games and entertaining
him while his parents John and Staci took in the Garth Brooks concert. It seemed
as if almost the whole state of ND went to one of his concerts!

The City Auditor's
building on Main St. is really coming along with the outside of the building up
and I have a picture in this column to prove it!
I am hoping my readers
will send me some of their Mother's Day news so I can get it in the paper for
next week.

The headline read, END
OF AN ERA. Arlan Hofland, DSU coach and teacher calls it a career after 29
years. He said it was the hardest thing he had ever done when he announced his
retirement. Hofland started out as a nose guard with the Dickinson State
College football team in 1972. After he graduated from DSC, he taught at
Garrison for 4 years, and then was a graduate assistant football coach at UND.
He then went on to coach football at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Clair for
the next 4 years before finally returning to DSC. He then coached at DSC, which
later became DSU, for 29 years while also teaching physical education.
Arlan Hofland is
married to Gayle Wurtz Hofland which makes him the son-in-law of Ruth Wurtz of
Ryder.
Road construction is
progressing on Highway 23 to Highway 83 and it is a real challenge to try to go
to Minot that way. We had the pickup the other day so we decided to give it a
try. Never again! We have started to make the almost daily trips to Minot by
going by Douglas, no gravel roads and you can at least drive the speed limit.
Fire index is extremely
high so there is a burning ban for Ward County. Also don’t throw any lit
cigarettes out of the car window. Any little spark can start a fire and we sure
don’t want what they are having in Alberta, Canada. Let’s all cross our fingers
and pray for rain.
