Ryder
News for April 7, 2016
Well let’s get this out
of the way for starters before I start the news. This will be my last column…I
am officially retiring.
Next…just in case
anyone was disappointed that there were no upcoming events in last week’s
column, I sent it in but it never made it into the news. Not my fault!!
The spaghetti supper
that was sponsored by the Ryder Community Club and held on April 1st
was a HUGE success with over $1000 raised to improve and spruce up the
playground!
Bingo was held
following the spaghetti supper and they also had a large crowd. I actually won
$60 for a change. I usually donate!
Cooking at Breakfast Benefit for Ross Sherven: L to R…Craig Johansen, Wes Sherven, Galen Larson. |
The next big function
that I attended was the Breakfast Benefit for Ross Sherven to cover his medical
expenses. This was put on by the Old Ryder Jaycees.
Kenny wasn’t feeling
well so I hooked a ride with my brother, Dick Ludwig.
Wow…what a crowd…they
must have served well into the hundreds of people. All area towns were well
represented. We were all served pancakes, sausages, eggs, biscuits and gravy
along with juice and coffee and you could go back for more if you desired.
Part of the large crowd that attended the Breakfast
Benefit.

Guests at the home of
Lorraine Forsman of Roseglen for Easter were: Sara Forsman and her son Alex
Dschaak of Watford City; great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Declan Linseth of
Spearfish, SD; granddaughter, Michelle and Nate Goulette of Minot and Nate’s
mother Ginger Goulette of Minot.
Easter Sunday guests at
the Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad home of Garrison were Kyle and Jenny
(Blowers/Johnson) Brossart and Kylie Johnson; Wil and Cindy (Olson) Oberdick,
Henry and Lucy; Steven Olson and Joelle Forschen all of Minot; Karen and Edwin
Olson of Douglas and Shawn and Pam Brooks of Surrey.
The Ryder Food Pantry
gave out food baskets to feed 16 adults and 24 kids for Easter dinner. Kathy
Kimball informed me that they now need more money or food donations as those
food baskets rather depleted their inventory.
The new floor is down
at the Sr. Center and it looks great. David Kimball was the fellow that did the
work. Our town is lucky to have a guy like him to cook at the Sr. Center and to
also cook at some of the different functions that we have going on around town.
We are also lucky to have his wife Kathy as she is an important part of the
community as well. Kathy runs the Ryder Food Pantry and makes the soup and
sandwiches for the free lunches at the Ryder Community Club/Gym every 2nd
and 4th Saturday of the month. Kathy also works at bingo, sometimes
calling and she is the treasurer of the Community Club.
The Makoti American
Legion Auxiliary will have a meeting on Monday, April 11 at the senior center
at 7:00 PM. All Auxiliary members are asked to attend, since we have the Music
Camp scholarship winner to decide and a new president will be installed.
The Makoti Senior
Center will have a chicken supper on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:00 PM. The
chicken will be provided and pot luck for the rest. Our new president Mike
Larson, will preside over his first meeting, so come out and welcome him.
Pat and Joyce McKinzie
were Easter dinner guests of Lee and Julie Brandvold and kids! They said it was
fun to watch the kids to see what all they got in their Easter Egg Hunt and how
excited they were about what was in their Easter Baskets. Joyce said it was a
wonderful meal and a good day of visiting.
Celebrating 70 years of
marriage with Don and Ardys Morris in their Mesa home on the 26th were Sandra
and Leroy Peterson from Ryder; Steve and Marge Morris of Lake Charles, LA and
their two daughters Shannon Guess and Jennifer Andrews of Dallas. Besides
friends in the area, relatives included Julie Hill of Grand Forks, Tim and
Darlene Hill of Bismarck. Don's cousin Marie and Don Richardson of Minot also
attended as well as Deb and Danny Skarsgard. A good time was had by all. Don
and Ardys will be returning to ND on the 31st.
Continuing the Basic
Rules for Clotheslines that I shared last week:
7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle.8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... Clothes would "freeze-dry."9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed. IRONED??!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!12. Long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty.
Oh yes, I remember all
of these rules and I bet a lot of my older readers do too!
Oh by the way…the
statement I made about this being my last column…APRIL FOOL’S. I know it is a
late April Fool’s but I just had to do it! I am not quitting. But…you really
need to get some news to me or I seriously will make things up and then you can
guess if they are true.
Speaking of April
fools…Staci got me and Kenny real good when she gave us a pan of “brownies” the
night of bingo. I opened the tin foil and there they were…brown E’s that she
had cut up and put in the pan. I also was able to trick Kenny that day by
exclaiming that there was a moose south of the house…of course I faked it
pretty good by rushing to get my camera!
