Ryder News Mar. 3, 2016

Ryder News for March 3, 2016

Darn it, I totally spaced out the Saturday lunch at the Ryder Community Center/Gym that is sponsored by the Senior Citizens. I know it was delicious as Kathy Kimball made beef stew and home-made bread and buns. Now I will have to wait for 2 weeks for the next one!

Lola (Lou) Eide, formerly of Ryder, visited her sister, Sonja Kline and other family members in Washington recently. Lou arrived in Seattle on Friday, February 19th.  She stayed with Sonja Kline in Orting, Washington until Wednesday, February 24th.
On Saturday, February 20th they, and other family members, attended the Memorial Service for Carmen Bernhard in Seattle at the Olympic Fremonth Hotel. Carmen was their sister, Janice Bernhard's, daughter and she passed away very suddenly on January 5th. Lou and Sonja also enjoyed a lunch with Pearl Sparavalo, their oldest sister; Pearl's two daughters, Solveig Calhoun and Sonja Regan; and other family members on Sunday, February 21st, at the home of Kris Calhoun. They enjoyed spending time with Pearl's granddaughter, Kris and her son, Gus, who is 2 1/2 years old. Gus would be Pearl's great grandson. Lou had not met Gus before so she really enjoyed that. On Monday the sisters (and other family members) were invited to a dinner at the home of Sonja's daughter, Lorna Kline. On Tuesday Lou enjoyed a lunch with Carmen's best friend, Ye. On Wednesday Lou flew home to Minot. It was quite a whirl-wind trip for Lou but she enjoyed it very much, except for the sad reason being Carmen's sudden death. Fortunately, Carmen's cousin, Rennie Truitt, from Atlanta, Georgia met Lou in Denver and flew with her on to Seattle and from Seattle to Denver again on the trip home. This helped Lou so much as the large airports are a bit (or a lot?) difficult for older people.

John and Janice Warner recently spent several days in New Orleans just after Mardi Gras so balconies still were decorated in traditional green, yellow and purple colors with masks, trinkets and may other festive items. They visited St Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square and went to Saturday night mass and then a treat of beignets at CafĂ© Du Monde. Lots of just walking around to see the Mississippi River, steam boats, freighters and a few water craft.  Sunday was filled with a voodoo haunted cemetery tour, a very special Valentine brunch at Antoines, a horse drawn carriage ride around old New Orleans for a history lesson and sights of some famous houses and restaurants. Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday John had meetings, so Jan went on a tour of a couple of sugar cane plantations, which took all day. She had a nice lunch at Oak Alley plantation and her first mint julep. Tuesday Jan went on a walking food tour of famous cafe' and bars around Jackson Square. Lovely supper time meals at Tableau and Arnauds. Very old restaurants with 14~15 dining rooms. Really enjoyed fresh seafood every night. Some shopping on the off hours!   Wednesday before returning home, they toured part of the WWII museum. This is quite a place, so well done with lots of interactive videos, old air planes and road vehicles on display. They agreed they certainly only touched the surface of the area in a few short days so a return trip sometime will be in order. Au revoir!

Shelsey Brandvold, instructor Shifu Potter, Stetson Brandvold attended the Moore’s Martial Arts Belt Test and Tournament.

Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold attended the Moore’s Martial Arts Belt Test and Tournament on Saturday in Minot. They were tested on 8 new moves. These 8 moves were created by the youngest Junior Black Belt to achieve this in the Moore’s history - Shifu William of Minot. Shelsey and Stetson advanced to the low purple belt. After the test, they both participated in the sparing tournament with other kids from Max, Velva, Surrey and Minot. There were about 60 kids that spared. Stetson came out in First place in his division of 7 and 8 year olds. While Shelsey fought hard to get second place in her bracket of 10-13 year olds. Their instructor is Shifu Alexis Potter from Minot. Stetson and Shelsey’s parents are Lee and Julie Brandvold of Ryder. Dalayne Hankel, Brynlee Hankel, Hattie Heer and Tate Heer tested the night before so were not included in the group photo. Congratulations to all!

The Moore’s Martial Arts – Max group testing that day for various belts were front row: Courtney Collings, Kayleigh Bennett, Kierra Bennett, Eliza Wheeler, Stetson Brandvold, Layton Fannik and Gracie Hauf.  Back row: Shun Shifu Jobert of California, Shifu Potter Max instructor, Da Shifu Krieger of California, Mckenzie Hauf, Emily Fannik, Lexi Hattelstad, Shelsey Brandvold, Madison Whiteowl and Shun Shifu Martin of Minot.
