Not much news for this week so of course I will add a little of the Blue Hill News!

We have had a lot of fog the last few days so I hate to see what the weather will be bringing later on. The old wives’ tale that I had always heard was that we would get moisture 3 days after a fog and if it didn’t come in 3 days then it would be in 30, 60 or 90 days. Hmmm. Of course my mother always said, “All signs fail in a dry year.” So I am wondering what we are going to get for moisture…any thoughts?

We’ve been having that nice mild weather again and even if we do get an inch or so of snow every once in a while, it disappears within a day or so. I see that the gravel trucks are making a lot of fevered trips to get the rocks hauled out of the fields before it gets too wet for them to get in and out.

I have an update on Ross Sherven…he had surgery this morning (Sunday) in Minneapolis. It seems that due to his coughing so much after his open heart surgery, his incision just isn’t healing and kept pulling apart and bleeding. I believe he was to have plastic surgery to replace his sternum. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers!

I visited with Kathy Kimball this morning (Sunday) and she told me that she is making beef stew and homemade buns and bread for the lunch at the Ryder Community Center/ Gym on Saturday Feb. 27^th. This is a free luncheon sponsored by the Ryder Senior Citizens and served from 11 to 3 every 2^nd and 4^th Saturday of the month.

Severance Valentine’s Day calf.

  Sally Severance posted an interesting picture of her Valentine calf on Facebook and I asked to reprint it here in my news and here is what she had to say about it: “In 2013 we sold our Charolais herd (all but the yearlings) to a guy in Missouri. Last summer the guy called us and told us that he was going to disperse our herd because he had an offer on his land that he couldn't refuse. Jan and I headed to Missouri with a semi and cattle pot and bought some of the cows back. Well....they were all supposed to be bred back to a Charolais bull. The day the cow started labor we put her in the west barn. After a short amount of time I told Randy to go check on her. He texted us a picture with a message saying, "well, this is interesting". So, we'll just send some hair samples in and have the calf DNA'd to see who the daddy is.  It is a boy and he was born on Valentine’s Day. The following day after he was born his momma had licked his face so his hair was spiked! He's certainly a standout among all the rest of the Charolais and Angus.”

Rod and Kathy Kallestad of Garrison became grandparents again for the third time.  Cindy (Olson) and Wil Oberdick had a baby girl, Lucy Eleanor was born at Trinity Hospital on Thursday, February 18, 2016.  Lucy weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces, was 20-1/2 inches long, and was born at 8:33 p.m.  Lucy was welcomed home where they live in Minot by her big brother Henry who is 18 months old.  Other grandparents are Mike Olson of Minot and Pam and Shawn Brooks of Surrey.  Great grandparents are Edwin and Karen Olson of Douglas, Eugene and Eleanor Salzmann of North Wales, Pennsylvania, and the late Konrad and Marie Kronbach.

Wind and more wind Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and this Friday morning.  It is still blowing pretty strong, with temperature at only 42 above. Is summer never going to come? After several days of wind, a good rain would be welcome to settle the dust. Farmers are getting well along with their belated field work. Farmers have seeded their wheat as planned, hoping for a good season. 

Not many country folks went into Ryder on Tuesday for Memorial Day due to the weather. Ed Peterson and Roy, Mrs. Harry Peterson and Darlene, and Mrs. Paul Sorenson went to Minot and to Rose Hill cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Olson and children, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Baxter were supper guests at Ed Olsons Memorial Day, the occasion being Mr. Olson’s 81st birthday. Later in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peterson, Don and Darlene visited there with Mrs. Peterson bringing a big birthday cake.

Barbara, Vernon, Diana, Shirley and Donnie Linnertz are attending Parochial school at the Catholic Church in Ryder for two weeks.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Olson have enjoyed the visit of Mrs. Olson’s brother, Jess Baxter and wife, who have traveled all over the U.S. the last three years, having visited every state but Maine. Three years ago they spent the winter in Florida, the last two in California. The Baxters have a large trailer house which is their home. They are on their way to Minneapolis for the summer with plans to spend next winter in Arizona.

Mrs. Harry Peterson and Darlene visited at Paul Sorenson’s Monday afternoon.

Mar. 2: Wednesday Lenten Services—6 p.m. Soup—7 p.m. Worship at Ryder’s St. John’s Lutheran Church

Mar. 4: 7 p.m. Bingo at the Ryder Community Center/Gym.

Mar. 7: 12 noon—Senior Citizen lunch with short meeting to follow at Ryder Sr. Center.

Mar. 9: Wednesday Lenten Services—6 p.m. Soup—7 p.m. Worship at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Roseglen.

Mar. 16: Wednesday Lenten Services—6 p.m. Soup—7 p.m. Worship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Makoti.

Mar. 17: 6 p.m. Community Corn Beef and Cabbage Supper at Ryder Sr. Center—Free will offering—Everyone welcome.
