   The Story of the Poppy
The poppy flower only grows in the absence of other flowers and only in ground that has been churned. In perhaps the best known poem of World War I, when Dr. John McCrae observed poppies growing between the crosses on the soldiers’ graves, it inspired him to write the poem “In Flanders Fields”. The poppy has since become known as the “The Flower of Remembrance” and is worn in memory of our veterans.

I’m sharing this in remembrance of the veterans as well as the active service members and wishing you a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend.

There was a large turnout for the Memorial Day Service at the Ryder Gym. Taylor Brown has taken over the flag bearer duties for Ken Bradley. Captain Bill Hudson was the speaker. Sue Mahoney sang God Bless the USA and also Battle Hymn of the Republic, Daniel Starks played a medley of songs from the different branches of service while those who belonged to those branches stood when their song was played. John Warner sang the National Anthem and also God Bless America. Jim Mahoney received a certificate for 70 years of Legion membership.

Several names that should be acknowledged for helping get Main Street  ready for Memorial Day are David and Kathy Kimball. They saw that new flags were bought and displayed in new holders and helped get and plant the flowers in their pots. Also, Daniel Starks helped a lot in getting the gym ready for the program. Derald Larson was a great help during cemetery cleaning as he not only trimmed until the battery in his weed eater quit so then he worked very hard at straightening the flag holders on the veteran’s graves. Peggy Reinisch mowed and trimmed the grass around the Memorial Wall in the park.

Destruction in the Ryder Park.
Someone drove thru the Ryder Park sometime during the night of Monday, May 19th and hit the cement pillar, knocked it over and broke the large cement ball off the top! What a shame and I understand that you can see the tracks that took this person down the road thru the Otteson yard narrowly missing the satellite dish and then almost into the slough on the east edge of Ryder.

There will be a baby shower for Corbin Reno Larson, son of Jade and Brittany Larson, on Sunday June 7th at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. Brittany is registered at Target. Everyone is welcome!

Jill and Claudette Brandt went to Bismarck to watch Dylan Brandt participate in the pole vault for State for Kindred High School. He has only been doing this for 2 weeks and he qualified. He is the son of Daryl and Doreen Brandt.

Let’s get geared up for some fun this coming Father’s Day! It is the 113th annual Hiddenwood Picnic on Sunday, June 21st. There will be an All Faith Worship service at 11:00 and then the Pot Luck lunch will start at 12:00 noon. Plates and utensils are furnished…you bring the rest! The program will start at 1:00 and Kenneth Opsal as Elvis will be there. At 3:00 the Hiddenwood Ladies will be selling their world famous pies. There will also be kid’s races and there will be lots of prize drawings. You can get to the Hiddenwood Picnic by going 8 miles south of Makoti on County Road # 9.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is warning people about scam artists who are calling residents of ND and claiming to be from his office. They are demanding that people cooperate with a supposed IRS enforcement agent asking for money. One person received a call supposedly from Stenehjem’s office and was threatened with enforcement action. The number displayed on this person’s caller ID was actually the number from Stenehjem’s office. The Attorney General says his office doesn’t make threatening phone calls on behalf of the IRS and if anyone receives one of these calls, simply hang up!

Another little tidbit from the Gus's Things and Stuff website.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY #1: THE BELL RINGS

St. John’s Lutheran Church
You all recognize Ryder’s historic Lutheran church in today’s post, but did you know that the church bell first rang on this day, October 22, 1917 (or maybe 1916—see discussion below). Historically, church bells of course were installed to inform Christians when it was time to worship (just in case the battery of their cell phone was dead). This was also true of the St John’s bell—a common sound echoing through Ryder on a Sunday morning, which instilled some serious guilt if you were still in bed (not that that ever happened to ME). For you readers who didn’t live in town, you would mostly remember the bell’s ring for funerals, as it was audible in many of the school’s classrooms down the hill. This ring is more mournful; a slower tolling than the “get up and get to church ring.”
Now, it says in the St. John’s church history in the Ryder Centennial Book that the bell first rang in 1917 (a Monday by the way). It also states that “the church was finished and consecrated on July 24, 1917.” Three months BEFORE the first bell ring? It strikes me odd that you would install the bell after the church was finished, or that you wouldn’t wait until the bell arrived to consecrate the church, so I’m thinking that perhaps this is a misprint, and it should be October 22, 1916.
To support the 1916 notion, take a look at the “St. John’s” tab at Doug Wurtz’s www.RyderHistoricalSociety.org. There you will see a reprinted article from the Ryder News dated June 28th, 1917. It talks about the bell as if it’s installed, even saying: “It has a beautiful silver tone and can be heard for miles.”
Now . . . if you really want to over-think this thing, what doesn’t quite make sense to me is that if it were indeed first rung on October 22nd in 1916, that would have been a Sunday. It seems that the day the crew installed the bell, they certainly must have rung it a few times just to make sure it was working okay. And, in those days, people didn’t work on Sundays, so . . .?

I may post another tidbit next week from Gus’s website if I have a slow news week. I get quite a chuckle over his articles as he is a very informative and humorous writer.

Ryder News for April 30, 2015

If you walk into the Ryder Senior Center in the AM on most days you will now hear chatter and laughter. David Kimball has volunteered to make breakfast for anyone who wishes to eat on Mon, Tues, Thurs. and Fri. from 7:30 until 10:00 a.m.  He will be there on Saturday also, but not until 8 a.m. It will be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.    Yvonne Erb, a former Ryder resident passed away on April 22nd at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Her husband, James had passed away in August of 2014. Yvonne is survived by her children, Jay of Apache Junction, Ariz.; Kim of Denver, Colorado; Tondi (Don) McGuire of Mandan; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held April 25th, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Bismarck. Burial was at the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.

It sounds like a fun event for Senior Citizens on May 12th at the Minot Municipal Auditorium. It is the 19th Annual Salute to Seniors and will be held from 9-3:30 with vendors and fun events. You can call 852-3398 with questions or for reservations.

There is an IRS telephone scam going around where someone is pretending to be from the IRS and they tell you that you owe money or more money to the IRS and that if you don’t send money to a certain address or call a certain number, you will be arrested. Please be aware of the following: 1. The IRS does not initiate contact by telephone. They use certified mail. 2. Legitimate government agencies have an 800 number. 3. The IRS will not arrest anyone over the phone. If an arrest is required, it will be after lengthy legal processes have been exhausted. You’ll know about it. Police agencies need a bona fide warrant to arrest people. 4. If you receive such a call, report it to the IRS at IRS@tigta.gov. Also notify your local police.

Lorraine Nelson celebrates her 80th birthday.
Lorraine Nelson celebrated her 80th birthday on Sunday, April 26th with a family potluck gathering at the apartment complex where she spends her winters. Kenny and I along with John, Staci and Johnny were there along with a whole bunch of her family. I don’t dare name names in fear of leaving someone out.

I went to the bridal shower for Kelsey Reinisch on Saturday. It was a large shower with tons of gifts and lots of people. It was fun to get a chance to see and visit with everyone. The hostess asked that each of us give our name and how we knew Kelsey. When it was my turn I said, “I really don’t know any of these people, I just came for the food.” After the laughter died down I told them I was a friend of the family.

There will be Bingo once again on the first Friday of the month…which means that it will be Bingo Night at the Ryder Gym on May 1st starting at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and have fun and lunch is also served.

St John’s Ladies Aid would like to invite all ladies to their Annual Mother/Daughter Salad Luncheon which will be held on Sunday May 3rd at 1 p.m. The speaker will be Marci Narum and there will be a free will offering.

Hoofin’ It For A Cure Cancer Awareness Ride will be May 16th and 17th.  It is a 26 mile ride from Roseglen to Garrison, ND. A Free Will donation is required to ride.

Once again we have reached the end of the news for this week. I am still waiting for news items from my readers. I may have to start making stuff up and starting rumors etc. Just remember, you were warned!

Have a great week and enjoy the warmer weather that they say is on the way. I heard that wood ticks don’t like the heat and right now they are out and about so hope it warms up real soon to get rid of them!

It’s okay to talk to yourself, it’s even okay to answer yourself…but when you ask yourself to repeat what you just said, you have a problem!
