Ryder News Apr. 27, 2017

Ryder News for April 27, 2017

We woke up to snow this Sunday morning (4/23) and some freezing rain. Oh joy! After having temperatures in the high 60’s now we are in the 20’s and 30’s. What happened to spring?

Levi Sprinkle (our grandson) celebrating his 3rd birthday with his Lincoln Log set.
April 22, was our grandson Levi Sprinkle’s 3rd birthday. Johnny and I went to his house to deliver his cards and gift. He sure was tickled to have us come over. We got him some lincoln logs so he and his dad could build stuff! Boy that stuff sure is expensive.

Johnny McGrath spent Saturday afternoon until Sunday afternoon with us while his parents went out to celebrate their anniversary. We braved the snow and ice to return him to his parents later Sunday afternoon.

We’ve had lots of wildlife in our corner of this country! We’ve had several deer that have come to visit, ducks wandering around the yard and pheasants in the old barnyard. Now my cat has been stalking one of the pheasants...I wonder what would happen if he actually caught one. I think they probably fight back unlike the duck and prairie chicken he caught a few years ago!

Now onto the REST OF THE NEWS:

On the weekend of April 15th, the Mueller Chateau east of Ryder had its annual spring opening event.  Joining hosts Kirby and Cindy Mueller for the festivities was Phyllis Mueller of Minot, Kyle and Murika Mueller of Fargo and Gus and Karen Mueller of Bismarck.

Pat and Joyce McKinzie along with other family members on Lee and Julie Brandvolds side, were Easter Sunday dinner and supper guests at Lee and Julie’s ranch. Joyce said it was a blessed day to be together with family and a wonderful meal. The kids all had fun with their Easter egg hunting! They also enjoyed looking at all the baby calves.

Lora Rockwell, Devan Rasmussen, Lainey Rockwell, Raelyn Williams, Carson Rockwell singing with Pastor Jonathan Starks at the piano.
On Palm Sunday at Calvary Church some of the children joined Pastor Jonathan Starks in singing, "Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna to the Lord"!

Wedding photo of Hal and Jeanna Severance’s daughter Sierra Lassila to Yoel Jonathan. L to R: Jeff, Josh, Carly, Abby (Mellgren); Sierra and Yoel (Jonathan); Jeanna,  Hal (Severance); and Gabe Lassila
Hal and Jeanna Severance recently returned from a trip to Pasadena CA where they attended the marriage of their daughter Sierra Lassila to Yoel Jonathan. They made an adventure out of their trip by taking the Amtrak from Minot to Portland and then south to Los Angeles and back again. It was a beautiful trip, seeing scenery that would be hard to see any other way. While there they saw their daughter Carly and her family from Alaska and Gabe flew in from Fargo as well.
While in Pasadena they spent a day at the Santa Monica Pier and went to the downtown LA flower district, along of course with spending family time together.

Janice Stueflat Eick from Wisconsin sent me an email saying that that she and her husband and sister Jean Stueflat Maass were recently in Ryder and took a grave marker to the cemetery. She said they really appreciated that someone had repaired the tombstone on the Stueflat marker. She also said they were amazed how nice and well kept up the Ryder cemetery was.

Silas Novak Webster grandson of Roger and and Margie Ree.

Roger and and Margie Ree of Arizona welcomed their 4th great grandchild, Silas Novak Webster on 4/17/17.

Nicole (Hagen) Pierce was home April 5-11th to visit her parents Marvin and Maureen. Accompanying Nicole was Izzy the granddog! A fun time was had by all. While Nicole was here she did some baking so her mom could take 4 different kinds of cookies to the staff at the Cancer Care Center which they thoroughly enjoyed!

I received an email from Duane Edwards Sr. and he says:

“Sue:  Your request in Apr 13 McLean County Independent got to my desire to help solving genealogy "brick walls"...... so I have researched "Kathrine".  Her maiden name was Lillenas.
One problem was apparent with both families -- the inconsistency of the spelling of the given names AND surnames.  But I was able to succeed following my life-long motto:
"The difficult we accomplish immediately; the impossible takes a little longer."
If  possible, can you help put me in direct contact with "the gentleman from Crosby?."
I would like to talk with him before I send you the results of my research.
Awaiting your reply,
Duane L. Edwards, Sr.
Redding, CA”

The following is the article he is referring to:
“We have a gentleman from Crosby who is looking for information regarding a lady named Katrina Vikon or Viken. She died in the Ryder area in April of 1910.  They are updating cemetery records. If you know any information, please contact Faye Karna. She has checked the Ryder museum records and did not locate that name.”

Terri Lundberg’s beautiful quilt made at weekend quilting party at Judi Hinders Green’s home.
The quilters have been at it again and Judi Hinders Green says, “Another great weekend of quilting with friends at Judi's House of Fun! We have this down to a science from setup to tear down, delicious meals, sharing quilting tips, and oh, the laughter!” Terri Lundberg is new to the quilting party at Judi’s and I have featured her beautiful quilt in the photos.

Happy 80th birthday to Pat McKinzie. He turns 80 on May 3.  Let's send him birthday wishes with a card shower.

May 8, 1950  Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson

More snow was dumped on Blue Hill again Friday and Saturday, May 5th and 6th.  It just snowed continuously all day and again Monday but since the good old North Dakota sun has been out full time making snow disappear and by tonight, I am sure it will entirely gone. Roads have just been terrible but with everyone trying to get the snow off and blading them, they are all in pretty fair condition again.
Several Blue Hill farmers have had a hard time keeping hay for their cattle, thinking they had plenty hay but with this extra winter, it got to be just too little hay.
Two more students have enrolled at Blue Hill School. They are little Carol and Larry Peterson, children of Mrs. Loraine Peterson, whose farm is up in the NE corner of Blue Hill Township. Due to the distance and road conditions, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson have lived in Minot during the winter so that the children might attend school there.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Anderson took their daughter, Bonnie Jean, to a Garrison doctor Wednesday. Bonnie hasn’t felt good for quite some time having the measles and the flu like so many of the children. She was run down and had tonsillitis. We hope the little Miss is back in school Monday.

Ryder News for April 20, 2017

Easter Egg Hunt in Ryder Park. “Oh boy, look at all the eggs!”
It turned out to be a pretty nice morning for the Easter Egg Hunt in the Ryder Park. The temperature wasn’t terribly cold and very little wind unlike what was to come in the afternoon. The temperature dropped and the wind really picked up. We got .20 of an inch of rain and there was some hail mixed in with that.

Kenny and I spent Easter Sunday with John and Staci and Johnny McGrath. I rode along to the airport with Staci when she went to pick John up. He had been to Ohio to his grandmother’s funeral and got home just in time for dinner. She had fixed a delicious meal and we all ate until we were stuffed!

Ron and Muriel Peterson spent Easter Sunday with Rondi and Steve Deaver and kids. Judy Deaver and Kelly Deaver were also there.
Ron and Muriel also visited with her aunt Carmie Streeper who is at Trinity Nursing Home recovering from hip surgery and open heart surgery.

Those celebrating Easter at the Curt and Nicole Peterson home in Bismarck were their children Kiera, Savaya, and Kaylee Peterson; Tom and Jude Burau and Haylee of Bismarck; Brad and Sara Schmidt with Chaskee and Piper of St. Anthony; Stuart Schmidt and Kayla of Mandan; Lance and Sammi Cleland, Bruce and Deb Peterson of Ryder and George and Jeanice Officer of Minot.

Most of us in our area received the Prairie Partners Outlook magazine last week.  It was nice to see a picture and article of one of our local Ryder couples. Trent and LyNelle Sherven were nominated to take part in the CHS New Leaders Forum. The Shervens started farming in 2007 in the Ryder area. They grow mainly durum, sunflowers, soybeans and spring wheat. Trent has been on the CHS SunPrairie board of directors since 2014 also on the Ryder township board.

The Ryder Community Club served for the Verendrye Electric Caucus meeting held at the Ryder Center on Wed. April 14. Howard (Bucky) Anderson of Rice Lake was nominated to represent the Ryder area.

Bits of Blue Hill News from 1950-1952
Blue Hill used to be a very active community located south of Ryder. Here are some newspaper clippings from the early 1950’s that center on that area. Hope you enjoy the recall of names and events. These are being taken from an old scrapbook given to the Ryder museum and some dates are not included. So, there may be some mistakes in the dates for which we apologize but cannot correct. You may notice that events or names are repeated several weeks in a row. I am not sure if Mamie forgot what she had written the week before or just felt it was important enough to repeat. Also, you will notice comments or questions in some areas. If you can answer these or supply additional information, let Faye Karna know.

May 1, 1950 Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson

Saturday, April 22, everyone really thought spring had come to stay with a perfect warm day. Sunday morning a shower of rain had fell and light showers fell intermittently all day, when about 9 o’clock a heavy rain started and about 11 o’clock it turned to snow and what a snow we did get. Minot reported 16 inches of snow. Anyway we did get a lot and with the strong east to north easterly wind, it really made drifts again. The REA went off about 5 o’clock Monday morning and we had no current until shortly after midnight Wednesday morning. No telephone communication as many telephone poles were broken and down. Two miles south from Ryder, over thirty poles are laying down. The situation is much the same or worse in other places. The linemen out of Ryder started work on Thursday to reset poles and straighten out the tangled mess. No school at Blue Hill on Monday.  Since Monday the weather has been cloudy and a bit chilly until Thursday when quite a lot of the snow melted.
Harry Peterson, Don and Carl Boe went to the John Slobojan ranch near Blackwater Saturday to help Slobojan dehorn and vaccinate cattle.
Many Blue Hill folks went to Ryder Saturday where last rites for Fred Bussmann were held at the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Chet Braasch and Billy of Roseglen and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Sorenson, Karen and Kathy of Minot visited at Harry Peterson’s on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. William Linnertz and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Plasiance and family and Cora Plasiance, all of Minot, were Sunday visitors at the John Linnertz home.  Cora Plasiance remained and spent the week until Friday at the Linnertz home.

Upcoming Events:

Hey, the weather has been so nice in the Ryder area that we have folks drying their clothes on the line. Who does that anymore?? Guess we still have those in the Ryder area that love the freshness-of-the-outdoors smell!

Denise Johnson’s ice cream birthday cake.

Those senior citizens that haven’t joined Ryder’s Senior Citizens club don’t know what they are missing. We had our monthly meeting on Monday, April 3rd at 6 p.m.  It started off with a delicious meal of pork chops, tater tots, green beans and several desserts plus juice and coffee. Then there was a short meeting and finally the fun began. It was Denise Johnson’s birthday on April 1st so she was presented with a gift and an ice cream cake which she shared with the rest of us! Our next meeting is May 1st at 6 p.m. so all you area seniors think about coming and checking out the club and hopefully joining us.

The men dishing it up at St. John’s Palm Sunday dinner.

Ryder’s St. John’s Lutheran Church men put on a delicious meal for Palm Sunday...roast beef and all the trimmings. The tables in the church dining room were full to capacity with everyone enjoying their meal.

We lost another Ryder alumni. Elsie Roen Benson died on April 2 at Garrison. Elsie graduated from Ryder High in 1947. She is survived by her and Boyd’s one and only daughter, Linda.

We have a gentleman from Crosby who is looking for information regarding a lady named Katrina Vikon or Viken. She died in the Ryder area in April of 1910.  They are updating cemetery records. If you know any information, please contact Faye Karna. She has checked the Ryder museum records and did not locate that name.

I received a very nice letter from Elinor West of Woodburn, OR. She has this to say,
“Dear Sue, Again, thanks for the Ryder News. You are doing a wonderful job writing the news and doing your radiation treatments. It is so appreciated by us old Ryder pioneers.
I don’t remember those people living in your house on Daily Street, I guess I go back even farther. I remember it as the Hanchett house. I spent many happy hours of fun playing there with Nona Hanchett there. Alma and Gust Meyer who were my Godparents lived next door on the south side.
Also enjoyed seeing the picture of Stan Hjelmstad and his lovely wife. I remember him as several years younger than I, about my brother George’s age.
They must have enclosed the porch on your house as I don’t remember all those windows. Nona and I played hopscotch on the front sidewalk.
Thanks again for the memories.
Love and prayers,
Elinor West Kronback 91 ½ years.”
