Ryder News July 28, 2016

Ryder News for July 28, 2016

Not much news for this week. The ND State Fair is on so I imagine everyone was busy making plans to attend.

We did have some rain Saturday in the wee hours lasting until around 9:30 that morning. The rain gauge showed 2 inches. I visited with others around town and they had about the same total. The rain came down hard and then quit and then started up again many times. I only heard one good crack of thunder and lightening but it was loud enough to make a person jump!

The McGrath’s came to visit and fish on Saturday...Kenny, John and Staci went fishing while I stayed home with Johnny. They didn’t have any luck fishing, their excuse was that it was too windy! (It’s always good to have an excuse.)

My brother and I took in the free soup (vegetable this time) and sandwich (ham) that the Senior Citizens had been putting on at the Ryder Community Club/Gym. Kathy Kimball is the lady who made all the food.

There will be NO soup and sandwich in August and the food pantry hours will be changing. You can check the Ryder Community Food Pantry website for more information in August or call 578-5876.

BINGO is cancelled for the month of August!

The Makoti Senior Center will have a barbeque on Wednesday, August 10 at 6:00 PM at the center. Burgers and brats and buns will be furnished and the rest is potluck.

Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold spent a week with their Grandma Joyce and Grandpa Pat McKinzie for their summer vacation this past week. They were gone every day doing all kinds of things. They were very impressed with the Peace Gardens as Shelsey said they had been learning about ND in school and she had seen a Video of the Peace Gardens. She had asked a long time ago to see it.

They took in the Farmers Market in Rugby and the Music in the Park with free ice cream and enjoying the playground equipment also at the same time. They did a lot of shopping for some school clothes which they really liked. They went out for pizza and they were a big help for us. They are at the good age where they want to help grandpa and grandma now, which grandma and grandpa really like! They were really missed after they left to go home!

German Lutheran Church (Ryder’s oldest building)

I thought I better get a picture of this old church before it is burned. The German Lutheran Church was brought from the old Ryder townsite and put in the  new Ryder townsite. It is the oldest building that is left from old Ryder. After serving as a church, it then became part of the Ryder Museum buildings. The Ryder Museum eventually moved all their artifacts to the two buildings on Main St. and sold the building. Since it costs too much to move it ($7500-$10,000) if someone were going to try and restore it or save it, it is going to be burned.

City Hall building on Main St.

The new City Hall building on Main St. is finally finished. Note in the picture, the sign on the front of building, the new sidewalk with handicapped space and ramp and recessed lighting under the eaves.

Upcoming Events:

July 31: Parish Services at Camp of the Cross at 10 a.m. The Parish is sponsoring the meal and the Parish Board meets after the meal; Calvary Church of Ryder services at 10:30 a.m.

Aug 1: 6 p.m. Senior Citizen’s meal and brief business meeting followed by lots of visiting.

Stay cool and in the shade during this hot spell of weather we are having. Keep an eye out for farmers as they are starting to move machinery down the roads.

That’s it for this week. See you next week...same time, same place!
