Ryder News for August 27, 2020

Ryder lost one of its residents on Monday, August 17, 2020.  Our sympathy goes out to the family of DaVonna Klimpel of Ryder. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Dalton Wade Butters
Dalton Wade Butters was born to Ian and Monica (Magandy) Butters of Williston on August 18, 2020 at 8:18 p.m. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19 inches long. He is the grandson of Clinton and Bonnie Magandy of Williston, and the great grandson of Grace Magandy of Ryder.  Dalton missed being born on Grace’s birthday by two days.  Grace’s birthday was August 16th.

The Ryder Historical Society is just finishing a new display on the Soo Line Railroad and really appreciates  all the help of Jennifer Andreachi, and Kirby and Kyle Mueller. They would still like to get a few rail spikes--one or a dozen or so. You can contact John Warner or just leave them by the door of the new building. Also most anything that says Soo Line on it; signs, tools, invoices, shipping schedules, dishes or commemorative items etc.

The Museum will hold an open house the afternoon of Saturday, August 29th, 1-5 p.m. in honor of the life and work of Larry and Shirley Cunningham. The Cunninhams brought so much energy and creativity to the museum and we would like to acknowledge their contribution.

Henry Oberdick’s 6th birthday party
Rod and Kathy Kallestad (Kronbach) of Garrison traveled to Minot on Tuesday, August 11th to celebrate their grandson Henry Oberdick's 6th birthday, which is August 12th. Henry's mom and dad are Cindy and Wil, and Henry's little sister Lucy is 4.

Lorraine Nelson and Doris Ann Zieman went to Minot last Tuesday afternoon to bring belated birthday wishes to Delina Johansen. She resides at Dakota Terrace apartments there. The three women were classmates and graduated from Ryder High in the 50s.

“Busy” seems to be the word at Ron and Muriel Peterson’s home lately. But it has been a good and pleasant “busy”. Last Friday Dwight Paulson of Madison, Wisconsin came to spend a few days. They all met Rodger Haugen from Devils Lake for lunch in Minot that day. On Sunday Ron, Muriel and Dwight went to Bismarck for dinner and visiting with Faye Karna, Sharon and Jerry Franklin and Mike Haugen. This Thursday Rodger Haugen brought some muffins and stopped to have coffee at the Petersons'. He was on his way to the Haugen farm to watch some combining. On Sunday Rondi and Cole Deaver spent the afternoon and evening with Ron and Muriel. After supper, Cole and grandma Muriel baked some chocolate chip cookies.

For all the out of state readers of my column...we have been having some REALLY hot weather!! Last Monday all 3 of my thermometers showed 96°. Yikes it was hot! It stayed hot for the rest of the week (in the high 90’s), I guess that is August in ND!

Staci, John and Johnny McGrath stayed in their camper at my place this weekend to help get some things done. I sure do appreciate all they have been doing for me!
My new garage is almost finished, basically all that is left is to hook up the electric and get the garage doors put in. There is still a little bit of steel trim that needs to be finished and yippee it will be finished!
My double-wide home is scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday and set up either Thursday or Friday of this week. Then the fun starts...painting the inside and getting all my “stuff” moved!

St. John’s Lutheran Church is hosting an all parish worship service at 10 a.m. this Sunday, August 30th. Service and meal will be in the Ryder park, weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, everything will be moved to the Ryder Gym. The meal is furnished by the church.

Upcoming Events:

August 30...10 a.m. St. John’s Lutheran Church All Parish Worship in the Ryder Park.

August 30...10:30 a.m. Ryder’s Calvary church will continue to hold Parking Lot Drive-In Church services at 10:30 every Sunday morning until further notice. Tune to 107.5 on your FM radio station to listen to the service.

Ryder News for Aug. 20, 2020

My sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Magdaline Giesen. She passed away on Friday, Aug.14th at a Garrison nursing home. She married Anthony Giesen on Jan. 10, 1950. They made their home in Makoti where they raised their 5 children.

Vacation Bible School Program on the last day.

There were over 30 kids attending Vacation Bible School this past week, Monday thru Wednesday. Johnny really enjoyed it and since it is just for kids up to 6th grade, this was his last year. Levi decided he liked it too! All the kids were invited back to attend church on the following Sunday to sing and do their Power Shuffle dance on the trailer he uses to preach to the ones attending the service.
Pastor Starks said, “VBS Sunday outside on the trailer was a wonderful success! We were blessed by the kids as they shared with us in song and dance! They ended the service with a proclamation that we all need to be reminded of, ‘TRUST JESUS’!”

There was lots of loud thunder Thursday morning but just a little rain at my house, .05. Friday morning I woke up to rain and it turned into an all morning rain with my rain gauge showing .60 when all was said and done! Some of this thunder we have been having has been so loud that it shakes my house and of course makes the dog bark!

Greg and Jackie Nelson had some bad luck last week as their garage and mobile home in Bismarck sustained major damage in a fire that had started in their garage.
They lost their garage and half of their home is burned with smoke damage throughout the entire home. They were in the house when the fire started. Luckily they were able to get out alive and unharmed. Greg is also battling Lymphoma cancer and undergoing his 7th round of chemo this week! Greg is my nephew and the son of Lorraine Nelson of Douglas.

Staci, John and Johnny came out Sunday to help me clean out one of the upstairs bedrooms. Most of the treasures up there belonged to Staci! I found a few toys to advertise for sale on Facebook. We still have another bedroom to go thru and also the attic. I can’t believe how much stuff a person can accumulate over the years!

My new home should be here on the 24th of this month if there aren’t any delays and windy days! I’m getting kind of excited but I have lots of work to get done before I can actually move in...moving propane tanks, getting new garage finished and hooked up to electricity, getting inside of double-wide painted and then of course, moving all of my “stuff”!

I need news from my readers or there probably won’t be a Ryder News column any more! I’m sure a lot of you are getting tired of reading about the things I am doing, so send me some news and maybe a few pictures!

Upcoming Events:

Ryder’s Calvary church will continue to hold Parking Lot Drive-In Church services at 10:30 every Sunday morning until further notice. Tune to 107.5 on your FM radio station to listen to the service.

Ryder News for Aug. 13, 2020

In the wee hours of Sunday morning I was awakened by a boom of thunder that actually shook the house! I figured it must be raining (sometimes there is thunder and not rain) and sure enough it was and also lightning. My rain gauge shows just over .20.

Alice Vangsness identified the lady in last week’s photo. The gal on the end in the front row is Allegra (Bluhm) Haugen and the lady in the back row has been tentatively identified as Dorothy (Arvidson) Nienow.

A small memorial service will be held for Shirley Bradshaw Cunningham  Aug. 29th at 5 p. m. at the Ryder ND cemetery.
If you plan to attend and have a good story about or involving Shirley please be prepared to share if you so choose. Please contact Eden Brunsell or Brad Cunningham with any questions Shirley passed late last year but Covid has postponed her memorial.

I’ve been trying to catch this mouse that keeps getting on my kitchen counter and leaving his ‘tracks”. So I have to clean and disinfect my countertops every morning. It seemed that I just couldn’t catch him! I even put sticky traps under the kitchen sink cabinet but no luck. I finally got more sticky traps as I had run out. I put one along the wall on my counter and decided to put a piece of Dorito on it. Lo and behold...the sneaky little devil didn’t even wait until dark...he zoomed right up to it when I left the room! Ha..caught him and disposed of him!

Vacation Bible School started at Calvary Church Monday morning and I took Johnny over there. He was really looking forward to going. Staci, Johnny and her dogs are staying here in their camper for a few days while John is in Fargo at the Air National Guard for 3 days. Hopefully she will be able to go through some of her “stuff” at the house and get it up to her house. Then she can help me pack up some of my “stuff” to be moved into my new home when it gets here!

Due to Covid 19, there will be no bingo in August.

There is another produce giveaway at the Ryder Food Pantry on Aug. 13 at 5 p.m.

That’s about it for the news this week as I haven’t heard from anyone with news to share for the viewing public...maybe next week!

Ryder News Aug 6, 2020

Ryder News for Aug. 6, 2020

The gentleman in last week’s mystery photo was Everett Stromme, who had been superintendent at the Ryder School in the later 1950’s. His wife’s name is Mavis and their two children were Shelley and Lonnie. Shelley had 2 boys and later died from cancer. Their son, Lonnie, has 3 boys and is a pharmacist at St. Cloud, MN.
Everett taught or was superintendent in many ND schools. At one time he was a student teacher advisor at Minot State College. He later became the Ward County Superintendent of Schools before retiring.
Mavis and Everett had been living in Mesa, AZ but, it was decided they should be moved to Fargo, ND. So, now they are closer to family. Everett will be 95 in August. His sister, Amy Yecoshenko, who is 97, lives in Bismarck at the same + 55 Complex as Faye Karna.
Thanks Faye for sending me the mystery photo and the information.

Former “older” Ryder residents who had birthdays in June and July were June Nelson, Olive Boots, Milton Bowen (80), Stan Hjelmstad (91), Beatrice Lahti Waldock and Alice Kotaska (101). Sorry if others were missed. Be sure to read the birthday/anniversary list each week in the Garrison Paper as Kathy Kronbach Kallestad is doing a great job at keeping it updated with Ryder people. She also gets it put on a radio station each week.

I had quite a few correct responses to the identity of the Mystery Photo. Lorraine Nelson, Shirley Bezanson, Sharleen Larson, Sheryl Erb Tolson, Duane L. Edwards, Sr. from Redding, CA and he had this to say,
“It's a long shot, but is that Everett Stromme ?  My 90 year old brain seems to think it might be, even though I am not personally aware that he taught school in Ryder.  He was in college with me and we both were Army members of Battery B of the 188th Field Artillery Battalion during the Korean conflict.  In December it will have been 70 years since we were put on active duty! Glad to see you resumed writing the Ryder news after your loss.  I enjoy your columns and look forward to every week for info about people I knew from the Ryder area”.
Also another correct guess from Michael LaRoque Jr. and he said,
“I believe the photo is Mr. Everett Stromme who was superintendent while my father was teaching at Ryder also. I was in first and second grade at that time.”
He had signed his e mail as Mic so I had to ask him who he was and he said,
Sue, My name is Michael LaRoque Jr and I go by Mic. I was in first and second grade 1957-1959 in Ryder. My parents were Mike and Beverly and both have passed, dad taught and coached. When I was a junior at Dodge N.D., 1967-1968, we played Ryder in both home and away games. Ryder played man to man and I believe Doug Wurtz guarded me, I had a difficult time scoring since he was much taller than me. I currently live in Detroit Lakes, MN and have been retired for several years. I read your blog weekly and have done so for several years, it is interesting seeing so many familiar names. Let me know if you or anyone else has questions. Mic”.

Wow, so much information to share with my readers. I enjoy hearing from everyone and love to pass on your stories. Thanks for sharing with me.

Jade Hagen, Josie, Ruby, Hattie and Harrison have been visiting Marvin Hagen/Richard and Stephanie Hagen and Petz families in Ryder, the JJ, Jerry/Kay Olson families in Douglas and Jade's mom Denise Hudgen in Garrison. Jade is married to SFC Ryan Hagen stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, but Ryan was unable to come to ND due to military travel restrictions. The family will be transferred to Fort Jackson, SC in Sept.

Class Reunion attendees from the class of 1942

This was taken from the McLean County Independent, July 23, 1992, written by Alta Hove who was the correspondent at that time and sent to me by Colleen Sorenson.
“RYDER SCHOOL HOLDS CLASS REUNION. The graduating class of 1942 met on Friday afternoon at the Ryder school. After a tour of the school, they enjoyed cake, coffee and lemonade and toured the museum. The group met at the International Inn of Minot where each told a little about their lives and families. Out of a class of 25, nine members have died, 12 members were present, four were unable to attend and two sent letters and pictures. Royce Hill and Russel Johansen tied for having the most children by each having 5. Ray Severance had the most grandchildren and it was a toss up between Arlene Caton and Alvina Piazza as to who came the farthest.”
In the picture that was sent to me with the article are the ones who attended the reunion. We are having trouble identifying the second person (female) in the back row and also the sixth person (female) in the front row. Maybe one of you readers will be able to identify these ladies and let me know who they are. Back Row L to R. #1.Wendell Hansen. #2. ??  #3. Ray Severance. #4. Royce Hill. #5. James Farstad. #6. Russel Johansen. Front Row L to R. #1. Doris (Price) Landon. #2. Ruth (Bussman) Carlson. # 3. Arlene (Anderson) Caton. #4. Dagmar (Helmstad) Farstad. #5. Alvina (Melnick) Piazza. #6. ??.

Excitement abounds in the homes of Ron and Muriel Peterson’s grandchildren. The boys are all involved in baseball.
Tate, from LaMoure, is playing in the State Babe Ruth tournament in Kindred. They are playing in the championship games on Tuesday.
Carson was playing with the Minot Babe Ruth 13 year olds in Devils Lake. Their team was runner up for the championship.
Cole played in the 10 year old Babe Ruth State Tournament in Mandan. They won 2 games and lost 2.
The parents have had to split times so someone was at each game. Grandpa Ron and Grandma Muriel tried to attended all the games that they could.
Rodger Haugen from Devils Lake and Dale Haugen from Williston were also at the Devils Lake games. Dale’s grandson played for Williston. The men are originally from Ryder.

Due to Covid 19, there will be no bingo in August.
Notice the date change! Senior Citizens will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for Monday-Wednesday at Calvary Church in Ryder, August 10-12, 9:00-3:30pm. Bring a sack lunch.
We’re so excited to once again have Pastor Steve and our friends from Cornerstone Presbyterian come out and lead our VBS at Calvary Church!
VBS is for kids preschool through 6th grade. And the older kids are welcome and needed to be our teen helpers. Please let us know if your kids are able to join in so we can make preparations.
