Outdoor Church Service at Hiddenwood Picnic |
Another perfect Sunday for the Hiddenwood picnic; not too hot, not too cold and hardly any wind!
Due
to Covid-19 the picnic was a little different this year. The picnic
started out with Pastor John Warner leading the worship service
outdoors instead of in the church. Debbie Peterson provided the music on
an electric keyboard.
After
the service, the 64 people in attendance registered for the door prizes
and to buy raffle tickets on the plethora of prizes that were donated
by area businesses. Some of the prizes donated were: 2 bicycles from
Mountrail-Williams Elec., 2 end tables from I Keatings, Medora Musical
tickets, gift cards from local businesses, gift basket and many other
items.
After
the initial registering the people gathered with their families for
their picnic lunch, with some even grilling hotdogs and hamburgers.
Doug
Wurtz was the MC again this year and he gave a short history of the
Hiddenwood Picnic which was started in 1902. He gave several interesting
facts; Back in the early picnic days there were a lot of things going
on including ball games, spirited debates, and other minor sports and
usually finished up with a dance.
In
1921 between 3,000 and 4,000 people were in attendance, the largest
crowd the annual affair has ever attracted! The picnic was usually held
on a Tuesday or Thursday in those days. Eventually the picnic was held
on the 3rd Sunday in June on Father’s day.
In
1917 the Hiddenwood Old Settlers group purchased a piece of ground and
were intending to build a substantial building, 40 x 80 in which to hold
their annual celebration in the future. The hall was destroyed in 1941
by a hail storm. I’m not sure the year that the hall was destroyed by a
tornado, it could have been the same year as the hail storm. The current
hall building was built in 1985.
Murika
Mueller graciously volunteered to play her guitar and sing a few songs
for the audience. She is the daughter-in-law of Kirby and Cindy
Mueller.
Once
again there were races for the kids, finding quarters in the tall grass
and a frisbee golf game; lots of fun for everyone. There were many
excited and grateful people when the door prize and raffle prize
drawings were held! Pie and coffee was sold later in the afternoon altho
the pies were prepackaged from a store instead of home made due to
Covid-19 restrictions.
As
Doug Wurtz posted on Facebook, “The 118th annual Hiddenwood Old
Settlers Picnic is in the record books. For 118 years, World Wars I
& II, the 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic, the Korean War and the 'Dirty
30’s' didn’t deter the original homesteaders, their families and future
generations from attending the picnic. Neither did Covid-19 this year.
Precautions were observed and a beautiful day allowed this year’s crowd
to be spread out on the grounds with plenty of social distancing.
Today’s attendance was far from the record 1921 crowd of 'between three
and four thousand' people, but all in attendance today agreed that the
enthusiasm for the picnic was just as great.”

Dave
and Kathy Kimball were blessed with two of their kids and grandkids
visiting them this weekend; Amanda and Joe Mccallum and their kids,
Caleb, Autumn, Aspen, and Colton; Crystal and Carl Cree and their kids,
Matayah, Avery and Ean! They stayed the whole weekend. The grandkids
accompanied gramma and grampa to the Hiddenwood picnic. Gramma packed
lunch and after church services, the grandkids played games, ate lunch
and won prizes at the drawings. Avery won a bike and gave it to Gramma
to give to a child that didn't have one. How cool is that? They visited
with people they hadn't seen in awhile and it was a great time!! Thank
you everyone that put their all into making this happen!!
The Kimball grandkids didn't think the weekend with gramma and gramps was enough, so they planned on staying the next week too.
We’ve
been getting little tiny showers of rain but not enough to do any good,
my rain gauge showed .20 for the night of June 16th.
