Outdoor Church Service at Hiddenwood Picnic
Another perfect Sunday for the Hiddenwood picnic; not too hot, not too cold and hardly any wind!
Due to Covid-19 the picnic was a little different this year. The picnic started out with Pastor John Warner leading the worship service  outdoors instead of in the church. Debbie Peterson provided the music on an electric keyboard.
After the service, the 64 people in attendance registered for the door prizes and to buy raffle tickets on the plethora of prizes that were donated by area businesses. Some of the prizes donated were: 2 bicycles from Mountrail-Williams Elec., 2 end tables from I Keatings, Medora Musical tickets, gift cards from local businesses, gift basket and many other items.

A plethora of raffle prizes at the Hiddenwood Picnic

After the initial registering the people gathered with their families for their picnic lunch, with some even grilling hotdogs and hamburgers.
Doug Wurtz was the MC again this year and he gave a short history of the Hiddenwood Picnic which was started in 1902. He gave several interesting facts; Back in the early picnic days there were a lot of things going on including ball games, spirited debates, and other minor sports and usually finished up with a dance.
In 1921 between 3,000 and 4,000 people were in attendance, the largest crowd the annual affair has ever attracted! The picnic was usually held on a Tuesday or Thursday in those days. Eventually the picnic was held on the 3rd Sunday in June on Father’s day.
In 1917 the Hiddenwood Old Settlers group purchased a piece of ground and were intending to build a substantial building, 40 x 80 in which to hold their annual celebration in the future. The hall was destroyed in 1941 by a hail storm. I’m not sure the year that the hall was destroyed by a tornado, it could have been the same year as the hail storm. The current hall building was built in 1985.

Murika Mueller, entertainment at the Hiddenwood Picnic
Murika Mueller graciously volunteered to play her guitar and sing a few songs for the audience. She is the daughter-in-law of Kirby and Cindy Mueller.
Once again there were races for the kids, finding quarters in the tall grass and a frisbee golf game; lots of fun for everyone. There were many excited and grateful people when the door prize and raffle prize drawings were held! Pie and coffee was sold later in the afternoon altho the pies were prepackaged from a store instead of home made due to Covid-19 restrictions.
As Doug Wurtz posted on Facebook, “The 118th annual Hiddenwood Old Settlers Picnic is in the record books. For 118 years, World Wars I & II, the 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic, the Korean War and the 'Dirty 30’s' didn’t deter the original homesteaders, their families and future generations from attending the picnic. Neither did Covid-19 this year. Precautions were observed and a beautiful day allowed this year’s crowd to be spread out on the grounds with plenty of social distancing. Today’s attendance was far from the record 1921 crowd of 'between three and four thousand' people, but all in attendance today agreed that the enthusiasm for the picnic was just as great.”

Kaylee Magandy, Perfect Attendance 2020

She is the daughter of Chris and Carrie Magandy of Garrison, Granddaughter of Alvin and Joetta Magandy of Douglas and Great Granddaughter of Grace Magandy of Ryder.

My condolences go out to the family and friends of Heidi Petrick, 39, of Minot. Dave and Kathy Kimball were blessed with two of their kids and grandkids visiting them this weekend; Amanda and Joe Mccallum and their kids, Caleb, Autumn, Aspen, and Colton; Crystal and Carl Cree and their kids, Matayah, Avery and Ean! They stayed the whole weekend. The grandkids accompanied gramma and grampa to the Hiddenwood  picnic. Gramma packed lunch and after church services, the grandkids played games, ate lunch and won prizes at the drawings. Avery won a bike and gave it to Gramma to give to a child that didn't have one. How cool is that? They visited with people they hadn't seen in awhile and it was a great time!! Thank you everyone that put their all into making this happen!!
The Kimball grandkids didn't think the weekend with gramma and gramps was enough, so they planned on staying the next week too.

We’ve been getting little tiny showers of rain but not enough to do any good, my rain gauge showed .20 for the night of June 16th.

Ryder News for June 18, 2020

Once again Ryder lucked out from the severe storms they were forecasting for McLean, Mountrail and Ward counties plus numerous others in the state. Some places received quite a bit of rain and tennis ball sized hail but all I got here was .11 of an inch of rain and a little pea size hail. My brother who lives 4 miles away didn’t get anything!

Sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Russel Johansen, Minot, formerly of Ryder. Russel passed away on Saturday, June 13 at a Velva care center.

Janice and John Warner traveled to Helena, Montana recently to lay Janice's mother to rest.  Margaret (Peggy) Kundy 89, passed away May 24th at her health care facility in Helena. She spent her first 87 years living at Three Forks, MT. My sympathy to the family.

Boy, it is amazing how much “stuff” you accumulate in a camper. I’m still cleaning mine out..finally got the bedroom done and a few things from the living room but still have a lot to remove. Makes me tired just thinking of it and then wondering where I am going to put all of it when I do get it into the house!

DON’T FORGET...The 118th Hiddenwood Old Settlers annual picnic will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2020. Due to Covid-19 concerns the picnic will be a little different this year. This year it will be an Old Fashioned Picnic, bring your own basket lunch and  you can sit under the shelters at outside tables or in the main building. Coffee and bottled water will be provided free of charge. There will be an 11 a.m. All Faith Church Service. Bring a lawn chair for the outside service or you may also sit in the main building. There will be a program after lunch. They welcome your talent on stage! Pie and coffee for purchase in the afternoon. Hiddenwood Picnic Grounds are 8 miles south of Makoti on County Road #9. Practice Social Distancing...Take care...Stay Safe.

The Ryder Museum is looking for a couple of things to be donated. They would like to acquire an early Citizens Band radio base unit, one from the 60s or 70s--should be intact but doesn't have to work. Would consider a very early desktop computer; something like a Commodore 64. Again, needs to look good but doesn't need to work.  Also a wooden slide rule.
They also have some painting that needs to be done this spring. Much of it could be done with a spray gun if someone has one but most could also be done with a brush and roller.

The Community Food Pantry located in the Ryder Community Gym will be open once again the 4th Saturday of the month from 10-1 p.m.

There will be no Ryder Community Club Bingo in June or July, due to the pandemic.

Ryder News for June 11, 2020

Downed tree limb in Ryder Park
We lucked out on the severe weather that the forecasters were talking about for this past weekend. We did have lots of wind and strong wind gusts. My rain gauge showed .50. I drove around town looking for broken tree limbs and other wind damage but luckily I didn’t find much! There was a broken tree limb on the ground in the park and my son had a tree limb break and hit his garage but that’s all I found!

I finally got the batteries charged up for my camper so I could get the 3 slides out and get everything out of it. I am hoping to sell it as I don’t use it since Kenny passed away. Too hard for me to hook up a fifth wheel! But oh my, I sure do like that camper!

Little Red Rock in front of Veteran’s Wall

There has been someone going around our little town putting little painted red rocks with messages on them. There was one in front of the post office that said “Joy” and one in front of the Veteran’s wall that said “Jesus loves you”. What a neat idea and thing to do.

John Warner, President of the Ryder Historical Society says, “The Ryder Museum is looking for a couple of things to be donated. We would like to acquire an early Citizens Band radio base unit, one from the 60s or 70s--should be intact but doesn't have to work. Would consider a very early desktop computer; something like a Commodore 64. Again, needs to look good but doesn't need to work.  Also a wooden slide rule.
We also have some painting to be done this spring. Much of it could be done with a spray gun if someone has one but most could also be done with a brush and roller. Neatness counts!!!”

Deanna and Bob Reikow, grandmother Sandra Peterson of Ryder and grandmother Mavis Reikow of Bismarck. An open house was held on Saturday at First Presbyterian in Mandan.  Attending the open house were the grandmothers, Sandra Peterson and Mavis Reikow; Carolyn, Kevin, Jim and Megan Munns; Blake Reikow from Bismarck; Dave and Cindy Peterson; Ron and Muriel Peterson from Ryder and many others. Great Grandpa Don Morris was unable to attend as he was in quarantine from the Covid-19 virus.

Ron and Muriel Peterson attended the graduation open house for Keaton Erhardt, son of Kellie (Karna) and Tom Erhardt of Bismarck on Saturday, May 23rd. The next day they celebrated with Becca Tschetter, daughter of Nancy (Semmen) and Tom Tschetter of Minot.

It has been 20 years since Pastor Jonathan Starks and his family moved to Ryder. They came to Ryder the weekend after Thanksgiving in 1999 when Jonathan was scheduled to perform a piano concert at Calvary Presbyterian church. Ryder had been without a pastor since August of that year when pastor R. J. Stohler resigned. He was the pastor in Parshall and was sharing his duties with Ryder. Pastor Starks said when he and his family arrived in Ryder to do his concert it was like God wanted them to be in Ryder. After hearing that call from God, Jonathan and his wife Pam and children David, Priscilla and Daniel relocated to Ryder in March of 2000. Both Pam and Jonathan are ordained ministers. Jonathan received a pastoral degree from Northwest Bible College in Minot in 1978 while Pam received her training in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Pam also has a teaching degree from Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD. The Starks said they were excited to minister to the community of Ryder. Jonathan said, “We want people to feel comfortable coming to us for anything. We are here to serve the whole community. You don’t have to be a member of our church to call on us. We are available for anyone with a need.”

Well, Jonathan and Pam, you are doing an excellent job of ministering to the community, especially with your drive in services and your and Daniel’s singing. I’m sure the whole community appreciates you deciding to move here!
