Ryder News for August 8, 2019
Mystery Photo |
Our
new Mystery Photo features a whole bunch of kids, any idea who they are
and what was going on? Call or text me at 701-720-4297 or email me at sbradley@restel.com.
Last week our Mystery Photo ladies were Grace Magandy, Thelma Wilson and Hazel Becker.
Grace Magandy was a hard one to guess and not everyone recognized her.
Correct guesses on Mystery Photo were: Shelly Sherven, after thinking for a while got all of them! Lenyce Simmons got them all too as well as Melissa Otteson Hansen and Joetta Magandy. Joetta had this to say about the mystery photo, “Sue,
I
have a good one for you. Al didn’t know his own mother in your mystery
photo, he told me it was not her, I said it was. Looked just like her in
our wedding photos.” Joetta, that is a good one. Tell him he needs to get his eyes checked! Lol.
Those
getting only 1 or 2 of the ladies were: Staci McGrath, (2), Pat
McKinzie (2), Cliff Brandvold (2), Dwight Paulson (2), Joann Johnson
(1).
Other comments on Mystery Photo picture: Troy Alderman said, “Best
food ever, Grace, Thelma and Hazel. Nettie should have been in there as
well. I don’t believe we were ever served a bad meal from them!!” “Marlene Hanson McKern said, Thelma Wilson, a thoroughly lovely woman that I remember well!”
Evidently I have a person that is not a fan according to the email that I received from a Eugene at emz@restel.com.
He says, “It is nice to see you are leaving enough room for other small
communities to get their news published. You really hogged the paper
recently!
Bit
of news for your news column - if you don't mind taking the news away
from the Douglas news column writer, like you have done in the past.
‘Very recent widows, Judy Ness and Marlene Roen, spent time at Medora.’
Maybe you can get this info
from a 'reliable source' like you did before, when the person did not
even answer her phone, but you published that certain bit of news
anyway!”
Now,
I have no idea what this Eugene is talking about, my stealing news away
from other writers and also publishing news that I didn’t have
permission to publish! I certainly wish he would have been more
specific!
Karen (Hagen) Branderslev
arrived in Ryder July 10th from Kalispell, Montana to attend the 50th
wedding anniversary of her sister Janet and Larry Mahoney. It was held
at the Ryder Senior Citizens building on July 14th. Friends and family
spent the day visiting and reminiscing about happenings 50 years ago. On
July 15th, Larry, Janet, Karen and Gary Hagen drove to Williston to
meet their sister Betty and Pat Wiley. Pat had a medical appointment.
They went out to eat do some visiting and laughing.
Dwight
Paulson from Madison, Wisconsin and Debby Edwards from Minneapolis,
Minn. were recent visitors at the Ron Peterson home. They all attended
church at Saron Lutheran where John Warner is the pastor.
Ron
and Muriel Peterson were among the large group of friends and relatives
celebrating the life of Marvin Ness after his recent death. He is
survived by his wife, Judy, sons, Jim and Chad and their families.
Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold spent from July 20th - July 25th at Grandma and Grandpa McKinzies
farm north of Rugby while their folks were gone for those days! They
enjoyed them so much and they were so helpful with things that needed to
be done! They went to the Music in the Park in Rugby on Wed. evening,
had free ice cream and Shelsey
met a friend of hers on the playground there from Minot. What a
coincidence! They did some shopping and ate at the Mexican Restaurant
and Dairy Queen, which they really liked. Time went by fast but grandma
and grandpa look forward to them coming every year about this time.
Pat
and Joyce Mckinzie really enjoyed Daniel Starks and Pastor Jonathan
playing and singing in the Music in the Park a few weeks ago in Rugby!
They had a great crowd and a beautiful evening to be out and about.
They’re hoping to see them again next year!
Rodger
and Dan Haugen of Devils Lake, were last Sunday visitors at the home of
Ron and Muriel Peterson. They had been in Medora and Williston and were
on their way home.
Muriel
Peterson’s nephew, Michael Streeper of Mandan passed away Thursday,
Aug. 1st in a Minneapolis hospital after a short illness. His mother,
Marlene, and his wife, Kacey, were with him in Minneapolis. He had been
one of the preachers at New Song Church in Bismarck. His funeral will be
Saturday, Aug. 10th at 11 a.m. at New Song Church in Bismarck.
On
the 27th of July, Paul and Betty Berg left for Hoffman, Minnesota.
There was a reunion planned on Betty’s dad’s side there. They had gone 3
years ago, so decided to go again.
Betty says “You never know what to expect. There are so many, many Zilka's. My grandpa and grandma Zilka came to Minnesota from Poland. My dad, Alouisius, (Ole) and brother Florian, (Floyd) came here looking for work. They were the only two to come this way tho. So we have made a few trips to Minnesota over the years to see family.
This
reunion was held at Hoffman near a lake and had a nice cabin on it.
Met some of the ones we had met before and some new ones again. I can
look on my cell phone and find another one most any time I am on there. My dad's Catholic family had lots of kids.
Paul
and I were the oldest ones there, so many have passed on. Except for
one pretty little lady, 88 years old, and I knew her dad's name was
Bernard Zilka, but that one I had never met.
On
the way home, we went thru Wahpeton, to visit Ron and Donna Sherven at
their home and business site. What a set for Ron and his three boys.
They decided to take us to dinner which was very nice of them. Donna's
grandfather, O.K. Haugen was my great grandfather. Mary Haugen is Tena
Jensen's mother and Tena was my grandmother. Donna and I were good
friends and I was at their farm a lot. Now there is quite a ways between us so never get to see each other much anymore.”
The
LaMoure Babe Ruth team placed third in the Class B State Tournament
played in Watford City. Tate Mart, Ron and Muriel Peterson’s grandson is
a member of the team. Ron and Muriel’s “Deaver” grandsons played in the
Cal Ripken State Tournaments in Dickinson and Williston. Cole’s team,
the 9 year olds, got second place and Carson’s team, the 12 year olds were the first place champions. They then went on to the Regional Cal Ripkin tournaments. Rondi (mom) and Cole went with their team to Frontenac, Kansas. Carson and (dad)
Steve (Steve is one of the coaches) went to Chadron, Nebraska. Neither
team placed but they made a lot of new friends and had so much fun!!
There
will be a Credit Union meeting at the Ryder Senior Citizen’s with North
Star Credit Union Thursday, Aug. 8th at 7 p.m. to discuss the
possibility of opening a Ryder Branch. The meeting is open to everyone.
Come and have a hot dog or burger.
The
Ryder Food Pantry was awarded a $5000 check from Farm Credit Services
as a recipient of the Rural Community Grant Fund. The grant is supposed
to help purchase furniture and other appliances for the food pantry to
enhance the storage capacity. The news article said the additional
storage capacity will be extremely helpful or the meal programs the
pantry provides for the community. Farm Credit Services feels strongly
that it is important to give back to the community!
