Ryder News for Aug. 29, 2019

I went to my nephew’s wedding in Williston with John, Staci and Johnny McGrath on Saturday so I missed all the activities around Ryder that day. I heard there was a great turn out for the “Loping for Leland” horse ride that day. Much appreciation goes to all who rode and donated to this amazing little boy! Leland Coy Johnson is the son of Briana Johnson and grandson of Sylvan and Eden Brunsell . This ride was to benefit this little boy and to bring awareness to Septo-optic Dysplasia. This disorder of early development causes blindness and delayed development. All monies were put towards Leland’s medical and physical therapy bills.

Kurt Clemensen (Parshall Fire Chief) sends a big shout out to fire crews for Saturday night! He said, “Parshall, Plaza, Makoti/Ryder, TAT, and Plaza Ambulance and Mountrail County Law enforcement, way to stand together as a team and do what you do!  Excellent showing by all! Each and every one of you deserve a giant pat on the back for your service.” Kurt was speaking about the response of those area fire crews to a fire a few miles south and west of Plaza. We were on our way home from Williston when we saw it burning and a lot of fire trucks at the fire. Since there were a lot of storms in the area and lots of lightning, we assumed lightning had hit a house.
The Plaza City Fire Department said that a fire destroyed a Honey Farm on Saturday. Three quonsets or buildings made of corrugated metal were burned to the ground. The fire resulted in a total loss of the farm.

It seems that there has been some vandalism going on in the area. Someone did some tearing around in Makoti on the ball field. They rolled their pickup and were later arrested. Then...the Ward County Sheriff's Office is looking for information regarding a break-in and vandalism at the Ryder Community Center over the weekend of August 16th. If you know anything regarding this incident, please contact Sgt. Jared Olson at 701-857-6500.

Julie Brandvold told me that 4-H starts on September 15th at 1:00 pm at the Max Civic Center. They welcome any/all new members, so invite your friends.  Julie would like to hear about some new project ideas, outings and demos for cloverbuds, and the older kids. Looking forward to a fun year again with a great group of kids and their families. If you have any questions please let her know. You can get in touch with Julie at 758-2456.

Bob Landon of Minot says he really appreciates all those friends and family who came to his nursing home to help him celebrate his 100th birthday!

Ronnie Bloom called me to say that his brother, Gene Bloom, unexpectedly passed away at his home on August 18th in Cheney, Washington. Gene was the son of Vern and Alice Bloom. Ronnie, Roxann and Terry went to Washington for the funeral.

Bert Neukom’s wife Ann passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24th. She was 90 years old.

I spent the better portion of this morning waiting on hold, 58 minutes to be exact, waiting to talk to a customer representative to cancel a subscription. Then I get someone from heaven knows where. He spoke very poor English and I had to ask him to repeat himself several times. Finally got it done though and then I had to make another phone call to upgrade the expiration date on my credit card. Where do these companies get these so called representatives? They can barely speak English! This one asked me where I was calling from...I should have said,  “My phone”...but I was nice and said North Dakota. She asked me if that was a country or a state!! Yikes!!

Ryder News Aug 22, 2019

Ryder News for Aug. 22, 2019

Since the Garrison paper neglected to print the Mystery Photo from last week, I sure didn’t have many guesses. The guesses I did have were from the picture that was on the Ryder News website which is: suesnewsryder.blogspot.com.
Dwight Paulson said, “It is Clayton Erb. Jim Becker also had a road grader, but it was a different model. Love the old pictures.”
Here’s a text from a reader: “Hi Sue, Just showed my Mom, Virginia Wolff, the picture of the store in Makoti. We think it looks like the old grocery store, Smith's Grocery. Just a thought. Also, Clayton Erb was our road grader specialist in our neighborhood. Sue Wolff Anderson”
Thanks for all the guesses as to the mystery photo...I did have one or two wrong ones as well.

Jaidyn Johansen, new police officer in the Williston Police Department.

Some exciting news we would love to share...Rod Johansen's granddaughter, Jaidyn Johansen recently completed the police academy in Fargo and will be starting her career at the Williston Police Department.  Her family is incredibly proud of her and so is the community of Ryder...Congratulations!

Addison Miller, US Marine Corps Boot Camp Graduate.
Addison Miller graduated from the US Marine Corps Boot Camp on August 16th.  He had a nice welcoming from family and friends in San Diego, California.  He is the son of Billie and Art Miller of Ryder.  Addison is home for 10 days and then off to Camp Pendleton for a  month.  After that he goes on to his next location for MOS training.  We wish Addison Congratulations and Thank him for the service he is doing.  You make Ryder ND proud

The 2019 Youth deer season is coming fast. There will again be a youth deer contest. There is a sign up board in the K-Bar in Makoti or you can contact Heather or Shawna and get signed up!! $5 entry fee. Must be registered by noon on Sept 13th. All does must be weighed.

Lorraine Nelson and Doris Ann Zieman took birthday wishes to Delina Johansen of Minot on Thursday, Aug. 15th. They were classmates and graduated from Ryder High School. Happy Birthday, Delina.

Matt and Pam Thorton and girls of Bismarck spent Friday night with Lorraine Nelson. They were here for the memorial service for Matt’s grandpa, John Smith.

There will be a Bridal Shower for Shea Larson, Bride-to-Be of Chance Westgard on Sept. 7, 2019...2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ryder. The couple  is registered at Target and Amazon.com.

A huge HAND to the volunteers who helped the Community Food Pantry with their pop up store. They raised money for the Ryder Community Club and the Community Food Pantry. Without their dedication, it would not have happened They were truly blessed.

Just a heads up, if the paper keeps on with their heavy hand of editing of my news column (pictures and omitting articles from readers), I will be quitting the end of Sept.

Ryder News for Aug. 15, 2019

Mystery Photo

A new Mystery Photo for this week. This gentleman drove a road grader in the area. Any idea who he was? Let me know...text or call 701-720-4297 or email me at sbradley@restel.com.

I had quite a few responses to last week’s mystery photo. Cheryl Erb Tolson of course, knew all of the names in the picture. Jan Bleeker also knew the answer. Several knew that it was the Presbyterian Confirmation class, Annette Hansen Rockman said she thought she could name all the ones in the picture, at least their last names. Dana Johansen Smith said, “I recognize Jan Bleeker.” There were quite a few more but didn’t want their names published.

The photo was the Confirmation Class from Calvary Presbyterian  Church, Ryder probably between 1960-1963.
The names of the kids are: Front row: Donna Kovarik, Donna Johansen Larson, Janice Johansen Bleeker, Sharleen Severance Larson.
Middle row: Sharon Severance Hovey, Daryl Simmons, Pastor Doug Sampson, Marvin Mead, Raymond Preston.
Back row: Sandra Morris Peterson, Sheryl Erb Tolson, William Preston, Gene Bloom.

Faye Karna sent me some news: “Our sympathy goes out to the Darlene (Schiewek) Franklin family.  She was a daughter of Carl and Bertha (Mock) Schiewek who formerly lived 3 miles east of Ryder.  Darlene passed on July 31, lived in Oregon and would have been a member of Ryder's 1956 graduates. However, their family moved to Oregon before she finished high school at Ryder.
Thanks for the info shared about previous blacksmith shops in Ryder. The one owned and run by Chet Neukom and Delbert Johansen burned. The one built after that still stands today and is used by the Fire Department.  Some who used it as a blacksmith shop were Jerry Roth, Mr. Steinwand and Mr. Fredrickson before it closed. As mentioned before, such information is in the Ryder Centennial Book and there are some books left for sale; contact John Warner at 701-898-7952.”

Wilson Family Reunion

The offspring of the Elmer and Thelma (Bowen) Wilson family met for a family reunion at the French Creek Ranch in SD in July. Their daughters were Karen, Gayle and Faye. They were all able to attend except for one of Gayle's sons and family due to illness.  In the picture Gayle and her 6 are located to the far left while Faye and her 8 are standing to the far right. The rest belong to Karen.

Richard and Judy Kimball were up visiting Dave and Kathy Kimball on July 24-28. Judy said, “We had a good visit.  We also were in Coleharbor and Bismarck visiting with my brothers, Jerry Eman from  Underwood  and Mike Eman and his wife Sue from Bismarck and sisters, Glenda Guenther who lives in Coleharbor, and Vicky Thurmer visiting from Garrison, MN. On the 1st of August we met Doug Wurtz and Gary Sorensen for lunch in Bismarck before leaving for home!”

The Morris Cabin at Deepwater Bay was a busy place during July. Steve and Marge Morris arrived June 30th and the rest kept coming! Some of the ones there were Kent and Dannette Strange, Leah, Calib and Dillon Terrell of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Ron and Chong Morris of Billings, Montana; Angie and Luci Kirby of West Fargo; Phylis Morris of Spearfish, SD; LeRoy and Sandra Peterson, Dave and Cindy Peterson all of Ryder; Bob, Deanna and Marshall Reikow, Carolyn, Megan and Jimmy Munns all of Bismarck; Corey and Wendy Parzek of Williston and most of the Hill cousins. There was lots of fishing, eating and visiting and the kids had fun in the water. The last weekend of July, Tobby Morris and 12 friends spent 3 days fishing and visiting. Marge and Steve had a busy month as many of their friends stopped in.
On Sunday, LeRoy and Sandra Peterson were in Bismarck to help grandson Jimmy Munns celebrate his 7th birthday. They also visited with Don Morris at Miller Pointe in Mandan and got Steve and Marge on their way bay to Lake Charles, LA.

During his August Air National Guard drill my son-in-law, John McGrath of Minot, ND,  was awarded the State of North Dakota’s third highest military medal, The Woodrow W. Keeble Award by Governor Doug Burgum. He was awarded this medal for providing life saving actions to a co-worker while he was working at EOG. This award came as a total surprise to John.

Hip Hip Hooray! Bob Landon is celebrating his 100th birthday on August 17th. He is in Trinity Nursing home in Minot. His sister Charlotte Broden called me and told me that it was his 100th. She said she is the baby of the Landon family at 91 years of age. Charlotte lives in Vail, Colorado. Happy Birthday Bob!!

A South Prairie High School student, Tate Novodvorsky took the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship by storm. He took 6th place this year, up from 436th that he placed last year. That 436th place motivated him to work harder and practice every day. His parents are Shane and Jami Novodvorsky from Douglas, ND (the Rice Lake area) and his grandparents are John and Brenda Novodvorsky also from the Rice Lake area.

Makoti General Store

I received this email from Susan Weidman: “Hi Sue, I am researching my family history and discovered my grandparents immigrated to North Dakota from Latvia.  Through my investigation so far, I learned my grandparents had a homestead near Makoti in about 1912.  Attached is a photo of their homestead in 1912 and a photo of their general store in Makoti, North Dakota.  I would love to find out where their general store was located in Makoti. At first, I thought the general store was in Minot, but the newspaper article below states the store was in Makoti. (I don’t know the grandparents names, I asked Susan for the info but as of this writing, I haven’t heard back from her.)
My husband, Bob, and I are taking a road trip from California to Rapid City, South Dakota for a tour of a few of the national parks. Since we will be close to North Dakota, we have decided to travel to Minot to see where my father grew up.  Do you have any suggestions on how I can find out information about the general store? This quest has certainly become quite an adventure!  I really will appreciate your help. Warm regards, Susan Weidman”
I sent her email on to Faye Karna and hopefully she will be able to help her. Also if there is anyone in Makoti that has any info, get in touch with me and I will pass it on to her.

Otto Janz on his Ryder farm

Another letter from a reader: “Hi Sue, I have been following your facebook page and website, My grandparents, Otto and Frida Janz lived in Ryder for years, my mother Louise and her sister were born on their farm, My mother  went to nursing school then moved to Vermont where she met and married my father.  We use to visit almost every summer growing up in the 60's and 70's.
I thought you might enjoy some old pictures, I've been back a few times over the years and hope to go back again in a year or so as I still have many relatives in the Ryder Makoti area. Sincerely, Nancy Davis”

Gayle Wilson Albert and daughter, Lacca Albert Smith spent the weekend with Faye Karna. Gayle went with Faye and a friend, Joan Ostby, to Michael Streeper's funeral on Saturday. That evening Gayle and Lacca went to a wedding reception on the Albert side. They left early Sunday a.m. to get back to Minneapolis for a bridal shower Sunday afternoon.
