Ryder News Jul 4, 2019

Ryder News for July 4, 2019

I had several successful guesses on last week’s mystery photo. Darlene Brandt Gossage, Lorraine Nelson and Ardis Neshem had the right answers. It was indeed the Eide girls, Lola Eide, Janice Eide, Sonja Eide and Karen Davis in front.

Mystery Photo
The new Mystery Photo is a group of cute little girls from the Ryder area years ago. Any idea who they are or some of them?? Let me know at sbradley@restel.com or text me at 720-4297.
Remember, I need your photos for the Mystery Photo segment.

Remington Bigelow, son of Steve and Deann from Makoti was one of 370 ND State College of Science students named to the spring semester 2019 President’s Honor List. Remington is majoring in Diesel Technology. Congratulations Remington.

Doug Wurtz wrote a little article that I had to share with my readers. “I had to share last week’s news from Sue Bradley. I’m not sharing it because I’m mentioned but because it is indicative of small town life and local news.
Sue Bradley picked up the mantle from many previous reporters who have been writing the local Hiddenwood/Ryder news since the first Hiddenwood Picnic in 1903. This week’s story continues that tradition for the 117th consecutive year.
Thanks to people like Sue, we have a continuous record of homesteaders, droughts, births and deaths, local events and a glimpse of a life that seems to be disappearing.
Maybe I am just a little nostalgic this afternoon. I just finished serving on a jury for a trial that ended in a mistrial. The days we spent in the jury box reviewed an ugly side of life that seems out of step with Sue’s News and the events of a simpler time.
Thanks, Sue, for reminding me that people are basically good and good things are still happening in this chaotic world.”

Vacation Bible School

Game at Vacation Bible School.
Johnny stayed with me for 3 days so he could attend Vacation Bible School at Calvary Church in Ryder. There were 20 kids in attendance learning things from the Bible and having a lot of fun! They put on a little program the last day for the parents, grandparents and friends. There was a lot of singing and shouting and jumping around. The kids loved it!

My grandson, Johnny is fast becoming a TV star. He has been on KXMC News 2 times this past week. One for his interview at the Hiddenwood Picnic and then for his “Hey Tom, How’s the Weather” segment on the weather with Tom Schrader.

Don and Elaine Alderman were guests at the home of Troy and Georgie Alderman last weekend in Camanche IA. They had a Freezer Filler get together which is a private group on FB. They had people there from North Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin and Kentucky. This group was made up of people who like to fish, hunt, forage and believe in the Lord above. The biggest part of it is passing their morals and passions to the next generation.

Bill Quinn and Hondo.
Bill Quinn and his dog, Hondo went one for two at the Minot Retriever Club Hunt Test in Burlington this past weekend. On a hot and windy weekend they passed their first test on Saturday but failed to find a bird on Sunday. This was Hondos first two tests so we were satisfied with the results. It was a good time camping out and working with other hunting dog people. Bill said of the first test, “Hondo passed his first Jr. Hunt Test with flying colors. Never gave me an oh-no moment. Hondo will be three in August. Found out I had cancer two weeks after we got him and have not been able to do much field work. We have spent a lot of time on yard work and his line manners are way beyond the Jr. level. Land marks were at 100 yards and 80 yards per my range finder. Thick wet cover. First bird was still alive and pecked him pretty good. Considering he has had very few ducks I was glad to see him hang tuff. Water marks were short but with a 25 mph cross wind. He did a better than average job of fighting the cross current and holding his line. Again not to much practice on water so I was really happy to see him work so hard to hold his line. We are looking forward to the next test in August.”  Bill Quinn is from Ryder. He and his wife, Joan live in the former Weldon Haugen house.

Graduates from 1937 Ryder High Program.

I received the following e-mail: “My name is Dave Ford. I was thrilled seeing the story, June 26th, about the Ryder, North Dakota Facebook page about the Annual
Hiddenwood Picnic at Hiddenwood Lake. In the late spring and summer of 1937, my father, Rev James H Ford, was a student pastor of the Ryder, Mt. Zion and Hiddenwood Presbyterian Churches. I have always known he served these churches but knew no details about them. I've recently found pictures of each but that was about it. This is why I was so excited to see the news video about the picnic (on my birthday no less!!).

Dad served these churches between attending the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago (1936-1937) and attending the Omaha Theological Seminary (1937-1940). Their family lived in North Dakota from 1915 until the mid 1940s. My grandfather, Daniel Knox Ford was also a Presbyterian Minister.

Sorry for making a short story long.... I saw your post on June 27th on the Ryder page. I went to "Sue's New - Ryder News". I saw your request for folks to share Ryder news with you so I thought that it might be appropriate to  share scans of some Ryder program folders from Dad's time there.
The first is a folder/program from Graduation Week Exercises for Ryder High School, Week of May 24 to 28, 1937.  The second is for a Soo-Line Council
Sunday School Convention held at the Ryder Presbyterian Church, Sunday June 20, 1937. (I had already shared this picture in a previous column). The last is what I believe is a Memorial Day program. (I'll share this in another column). I'm sure folks will find familiar family names in theses folders. I've connected with Doug Wurtz and he is going to share his writing about Hiddenwood with me.”  Thanks for sharing this, Dave.
