Ryder News Jul 18, 2019

Ryder News for July 18, 2019

The area finally received some much needed rain. I had an inch and a half from the all day rain on Tuesday the 9th. Mary Shaw said, “Rain total...5.1" at the farm... the corn is under water...  might be hitting up the farmers markets this fall....”
My brother, Dick, got over 2 inches at his place about 5 miles southwest of my farm.

I’ve kept pretty busy this past week clipping dogs. I have one completely done and another with just 1 leg left to do. It usually takes me a few days to totally finish a dog as we both like to take to take long breaks! I still have one more to do but at least mine are real good about being clipped and they stand pretty still except when I clip their feet and cut their nails.

I just received news that Marcia Raszler, 77, Minot and formerly of Ryder, ND died Saturday, July 13, 2019 in a Minot hospital. My sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

Jim Zieman of Makoti passed away Monday morning July 15, 2019 at his home. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Rondi Deaver said, “Couldn't be prouder of our boys!! Carson's baseball team took 1st place at State and heading to the Regional tournament in Nebraska...and Cole's baseball team took 2nd at State and also heading to the Regional tournament in Kansas!!! I only wish I could be two places at once...very hard on this momma to not be with both boys!” Carson and Cole Deaver are the grandsons of Ron and Muriel Peterson of Ryder. Congratulations boys!

Shawna Schenfisch and Heather Underdahl said, “Achievement Days 2019 is in the books! We can’t even express how proud we are of the kids. Jericka got Reserve Champion Duck, then took 2nd in class with “TT” her little bottle calf.
Lane had a knockout day, Grand Champion Market Wether, Reserve Champion Overall Market Lamb, Reserve Champion Senior Lamb Showman, Reserve Champion British Heifer and Reserve Champion Beef Senior Showman.
Charlee got Grand Champion Market Steer, Grand Champion Overall Market Animal, Grand Champion Senior Beef Showman and then went and won the Round Robin for Overall Senior Showman.”
Jericka and Charlee are the daughters of Rick and Shawna Schenfisch and Lane is the son of Luke and Heather Underdahl. Congratulations kids!!

Wendell Hjelmstad sent me the following: “Don't know if the following info is of use. Ole Otteson had a blacksmith shop at the farm where he lived during the 30's which was at that time the Ole Troite farm located about 5 or 6 miles southwest of Ryder, later owned by Oscar Larson. Prior to that Mr Ottesson worked at the Gust Meyer shop located in southeast Ryder which was a blacksmith and harness shop.”
Thanks Wendell for the information. I’m sure Faye Karna or someone from the museum will appreciate this information.

Annette Rockman sent me the following: “Visiting Carol Jean Hansen on Tuesday was her daughter, Annette Rockeman from Donnybrook. Carol Jean lives at Benedictine Living Center in Garrison and enjoys getting company.  Carol Jean has Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) which has taken her ability to walk and slowly is taking away other muscle strength.”

Sylvia Enockson and Wayne Johnson, entertainers at Ryder Senior Citizens.

Tuesday, July 9th, the Ryder Happy Hour Senior Citizens was host to the Ward County Council on Aging. Seniors from many different senior citizens clubs were present. Several door prizes were given out after lunch and the meeting. Wayne Johnson and Sylvia Enockson were the entertainment and we all enjoyed the variety of songs they each sang.

SENATOR HANSBROUGH AT PLAZA AND RYDER
Those Towns Do Themselves Proud in Entertaining Visitors—Indian War Dance - Senator Breaks All Records Drinking Butter Milk.
Plaza celebrated her first birthday Saturday in a manner that will not be forgotten by the two thousand people who gathered at the lively little city at the end of the Drake Soo extension. United States Senator Hansbrough, Register McGahan, Judge Davis, Commissioner De Lance, Deputy Sheriff Kelley, Ex-Commissioner Black, Banker J. C. Holbrook, Banker Barbor and many other prominent visitors were present.
The afternoon was taken up in a ball game between Tagus and Plaza which resulted in victory for the home team, 2 to 1. Two hundred Indians from the Berthold reservation a mile and a half away dressed in feathers and war paint and went thru the wiers war dances. The sight was great.
This was taken from the following:

The town of Plaza ND gets its name in that it was built around a town square or Plaza, which was actually a park or central meeting place. This was not an uncommon way to lay out small towns in ND. Neighboring Ryder is laid out in much the same way though Ryder has never made quite a big deal over the Park/Square layout that Plaza always has. Plaza annually has an anniversary celebration around July 22 with most of the events taking place in the plaza park/town square.

Plaza Gazebo
At one time there was a large bandstand in the center of the plaza. It was an odd 13-sided covered structure on a concrete base at one time, but like so many of these structures, the roof came down and eventually the other wooden parts rotted away leaving only the big concrete base. The concrete base for many years got used as something of an outdoor stage for many events--musical groups for celebrations, outdoor church services etc etc, but for decades we always talked about returning this to something more like the original covered bandstand.

Finally, everyone got their act together and the new gazebo was completed I think sometime in 2015. It sits over the spot where the bandstand once stood. The original 13-sided concrete base was completely removed and I am told that the new structure, with fewer sides is a bit smaller than the old (some locals I talked to seemed less than happy about that part). Anyhow here are some photos of the new structure. I was kinda in on the very early stages of this replacement idea, then everything died down and I thought everyone had given up on the idea. Then suddenly the new gazebo like structure seemed to just appear out of nowhere.
