Ryder News Nov 30, 2017

Ryder News for Nov. 30, 2017

We have lost a few local residents when they went to their heavenly home.
Joyce Pank passed away Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 surrounded by her family at her Makoti home. She was born to Jacob and Alice Petz. Joyce is survived by her son Troy (Valarie) Pank; daughters: Pennie (Shawn) Edwards; DelRaye (Wayne) Giesen; and Wendy Pank; 4 brothers and 3 sisters, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. Our sympathy goes out to family and friends.

Maureen Hagen passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 in her home. She was the daughter of Larry and LaVerne Petz. Maureen is survived by her husband, Marvin; son; Ryan (Jade) Hagen; daughter, Nicole (Brandon) Pierce; and granddaughters, Josie, Hattie, and Ruby. She is also survived by sisters, Stephanie, Monica, Teri Kaye, Sue Ellen, Paulette, and brothers, Tim, Tom, John, and Peter. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church of Parshall with interment at Ryder’s Rosehill Cemetery. Our sympathy goes out to family and friends.

Ben Long of Minot passed away on Nov. 23, 2017 in a Minot health care center surrounded by his family. Our sympathy goes out to the family.
The reason I am adding Ben’s obituary is because Kenny and I became quite good friends with him and his wife Mae as Kenny and Ben were taking dialysis at the same time. Ben was lucky and got his kidney the first year he was there. R.I.P.

Maria Joy Wiechmann
Now we have some good news to share, Juria and Eli Wiechmann are the proud parents of little Maria Joy who was born at 6:15 Sunday morning weighing 7 lbs. and is 19 ¼ inches long. Proud grandparents are Steve and Deann Bigelow.

The following piece is taken from Gus Mueller’s blog: “Gus’s Things and Stuff.”  You will find several interesting tidbits about Ryder at https://www.facebook.com/Guss-Things-and-Stuff-180084145471162/

How many of you have ever seen Ryder money?  Well now you have a chance to own a Ryder $10.00 bill—the one you see here is for sale!

You probably can read the signature on the bill, it’s C.H. Christiansen, who came to Ryder in 1908.  He was one of the chief officers of the newly opened First National Bank, located on the corner where the post office now stands.  The original wooden structure was replaced with today’s brick building in 1917.  That building became the Ryder Post Office in 1941 and Christy moved across the street and started the Ryder Exchange in what originally was the First State Bank building, and is still standing (sort of) today.  Note that the date on the bill is April 22, 1908, right about the time Christy arrived in Ryder.

On a personal note, Christy was still living in Ryder when I started Halloween Trick-or-Treating in the mid-1950s. Without question, the stop at his house was the highlight of the night. While the “treat” at most homes was either a piece of Bazooka bubble gum or a root beer barrel, at Christy’s, his wife opened the front door, you walked into the living room, and there was Christy sitting in his favorite chair handing out new shiny dimes (which, by the way, would buy 20 root beer barrels at Butch’s Drug Store)!

You might wonder what $10.00 of 1908 money is worth today?  About $270.00.  Stated a different way, something that costs $10.00 today would have cost around 40 cents in 1908.  Let’s do the math and see if that works out.  A six-pack of “good” beer today cost around $10.00.  There are 72 ounces or 4.5 pints in a six pack.  In the early 1900s, a pint of beer sold for around 10 cents, so the math works.

So, with all this history about Ryder money, Christy, and inflation, think you might want to buy this bill for your Ryder memory box?  Go to eBay and it can be yours for . . . $2,750.00, which, in case you’re curious would have gotten you 6,875 six-packs in 1908!  A heck of a party.

Gus, I love your Ryder tidbits and I know my readers do also! Keep them coming.

At this time of year to be Thankful-the Ryder Museum is so appreciative of the memorial money's received recently from the Phyllis Mueller family, and memorials for Richard Becker and Wendell Hansen. We have a little gem in south Ward County in our museum buildings. The board is planning new displays and a little updating. We have some new (old) items from the local fire department and a couple Ryder businesses.

Jim and Doris Ann Zieman had an enjoyable time in Las Vegas two weeks ago and all of their nine children were with them there. Scott and Ryan, Makoti; Cindy from Rugby; Vanessa (Floyd) Surrey; Blake, Redmond, Wa; Bradley, Albuq. N.M.; Randy, Edgewood, Wa.; Valerie, Omaha, NE; Melanie (Marcus) Maryville, Tn. They were celebrating their father Jim's 80th Birthday.

Ron and Muriel Peterson have been “On The Road Again”. Their granddaughter, Ana Mart was confirmed at Zoar Lutheran Church in La Moure the last Sunday in October so they attended church there and had a very nice day at the Marts.
Last weekend they were in Fargo for the State Volleyball Tournament. Previous to this they had attended the district tournament in Oakes and regional tournament in Hazelton. They took first place in all of them. This is the third year in a row being State Champions. Exciting!!
Thanksgiving guests at the Peterson’s were their daughters and families, Rondi, Steve, Carson and Cole Deaver from Minot and Kari, Scott, Ana and Tate Mart from La Moure.
