Ryder News Nov 30, 2017

Ryder News for Nov. 30, 2017

We have lost a few local residents when they went to their heavenly home.
Joyce Pank passed away Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017 surrounded by her family at her Makoti home. She was born to Jacob and Alice Petz. Joyce is survived by her son Troy (Valarie) Pank; daughters: Pennie (Shawn) Edwards; DelRaye (Wayne) Giesen; and Wendy Pank; 4 brothers and 3 sisters, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. Our sympathy goes out to family and friends.

Maureen Hagen passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 in her home. She was the daughter of Larry and LaVerne Petz. Maureen is survived by her husband, Marvin; son; Ryan (Jade) Hagen; daughter, Nicole (Brandon) Pierce; and granddaughters, Josie, Hattie, and Ruby. She is also survived by sisters, Stephanie, Monica, Teri Kaye, Sue Ellen, Paulette, and brothers, Tim, Tom, John, and Peter. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church of Parshall with interment at Ryder’s Rosehill Cemetery. Our sympathy goes out to family and friends.

Ben Long of Minot passed away on Nov. 23, 2017 in a Minot health care center surrounded by his family. Our sympathy goes out to the family.
The reason I am adding Ben’s obituary is because Kenny and I became quite good friends with him and his wife Mae as Kenny and Ben were taking dialysis at the same time. Ben was lucky and got his kidney the first year he was there. R.I.P.

Maria Joy Wiechmann
Now we have some good news to share, Juria and Eli Wiechmann are the proud parents of little Maria Joy who was born at 6:15 Sunday morning weighing 7 lbs. and is 19 ¼ inches long. Proud grandparents are Steve and Deann Bigelow.

The following piece is taken from Gus Mueller’s blog: “Gus’s Things and Stuff.”  You will find several interesting tidbits about Ryder at https://www.facebook.com/Guss-Things-and-Stuff-180084145471162/

How many of you have ever seen Ryder money?  Well now you have a chance to own a Ryder $10.00 bill—the one you see here is for sale!

You probably can read the signature on the bill, it’s C.H. Christiansen, who came to Ryder in 1908.  He was one of the chief officers of the newly opened First National Bank, located on the corner where the post office now stands.  The original wooden structure was replaced with today’s brick building in 1917.  That building became the Ryder Post Office in 1941 and Christy moved across the street and started the Ryder Exchange in what originally was the First State Bank building, and is still standing (sort of) today.  Note that the date on the bill is April 22, 1908, right about the time Christy arrived in Ryder.

On a personal note, Christy was still living in Ryder when I started Halloween Trick-or-Treating in the mid-1950s. Without question, the stop at his house was the highlight of the night. While the “treat” at most homes was either a piece of Bazooka bubble gum or a root beer barrel, at Christy’s, his wife opened the front door, you walked into the living room, and there was Christy sitting in his favorite chair handing out new shiny dimes (which, by the way, would buy 20 root beer barrels at Butch’s Drug Store)!

You might wonder what $10.00 of 1908 money is worth today?  About $270.00.  Stated a different way, something that costs $10.00 today would have cost around 40 cents in 1908.  Let’s do the math and see if that works out.  A six-pack of “good” beer today cost around $10.00.  There are 72 ounces or 4.5 pints in a six pack.  In the early 1900s, a pint of beer sold for around 10 cents, so the math works.

So, with all this history about Ryder money, Christy, and inflation, think you might want to buy this bill for your Ryder memory box?  Go to eBay and it can be yours for . . . $2,750.00, which, in case you’re curious would have gotten you 6,875 six-packs in 1908!  A heck of a party.

Gus, I love your Ryder tidbits and I know my readers do also! Keep them coming.

At this time of year to be Thankful-the Ryder Museum is so appreciative of the memorial money's received recently from the Phyllis Mueller family, and memorials for Richard Becker and Wendell Hansen. We have a little gem in south Ward County in our museum buildings. The board is planning new displays and a little updating. We have some new (old) items from the local fire department and a couple Ryder businesses.

Jim and Doris Ann Zieman had an enjoyable time in Las Vegas two weeks ago and all of their nine children were with them there. Scott and Ryan, Makoti; Cindy from Rugby; Vanessa (Floyd) Surrey; Blake, Redmond, Wa; Bradley, Albuq. N.M.; Randy, Edgewood, Wa.; Valerie, Omaha, NE; Melanie (Marcus) Maryville, Tn. They were celebrating their father Jim's 80th Birthday.

Ron and Muriel Peterson have been “On The Road Again”. Their granddaughter, Ana Mart was confirmed at Zoar Lutheran Church in La Moure the last Sunday in October so they attended church there and had a very nice day at the Marts.
Last weekend they were in Fargo for the State Volleyball Tournament. Previous to this they had attended the district tournament in Oakes and regional tournament in Hazelton. They took first place in all of them. This is the third year in a row being State Champions. Exciting!!
Thanksgiving guests at the Peterson’s were their daughters and families, Rondi, Steve, Carson and Cole Deaver from Minot and Kari, Scott, Ana and Tate Mart from La Moure.

Upcoming Events:

Ryder News for Nov. 23, 2017

Not much news this week as there was an early deadline to get news submitted.

Kenny has been going to physical therapy twice a week for several weeks now and today the therapist said he has made quite an improvement since the first time he went. He has a badly torn rotator cuff as well as some loss of control of his right hand as a result from his little stroke.

Parliamentary procedure team, Wyatt Kersten, Delaney Ruhland, Emily Fannik, Ben Scheresky and Shelsey Brandvold.

Sixth grader Shesley Brandvold joined a parliamentary procedure team through the Ward County 4-H. She and her team mates practiced before and after school and even the morning of competition. The kids went to Civic U located at the 4-H Camp near Washburn this past Saturday. All the hard work paid off as their team came home with the gavel trophy as state champions! Their coaches Christina Bingham, Hope Scheresky and Holly Kersten helped them on their achievement! All the kids go to Max School and are from Max, Douglas and Benedict area. Shesley is the daughter of Lee and Julie Brandvold.
Congratulations Shesley and the team!

Bill Quinn’s dog, Hondo.

Bill Quinn sent me the following: “I submitted this picture of my dog Hondo to the Minot Daily News Perfect Pet Contest. Voting starts on November 20th. Maybe your readers that subscribe to the Minot Daily News could help a Ryder dog win by voting. Bill Quinn.”

I received the following news item from Sandy Peterson and she says, “Carolyn Manns,  Deanna Reikow and I spent last weekend in Fla. enjoying the beach, sun, seafood and celebrating Carolyn’s birthday, I had great time with the girls.”

Ryder Community Food Pantry will not be open on Nov. 25, 2017.

Someone donated a van to the Community Food Pantry and Kathy Kimball says they appreciate it very much. She says it drives great and they needed it so bad!

the potatoes. Helpful Harry Says: Buy Hungry Jack mashed potato mix and keep it in the pantry for up to a year.
Wise Wanda Says: To prevent egg shells from cracking, add a pinch of salt to the water before hard boiling. Helpful Harry Says: Who cares if they crack, aren't you going to take the shells off anyway?
Wise Wanda Says: To get the most juice out of fresh lemons, bring them to room temperature and roll them under your palm against the kitchen counter before squeezing. Helpful Harry Says: Sleep with the lemons in between the mattress and box springs.
Wise Wanda Says: To easily remove burnt-on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stovetop. Helpful Harry Says: Eat out every night and avoid cooking.

There may be more tips next week!

Ryder News Nov 16, 2017

Ryder News for Nov. 16, 2017

Today (Sunday) was a totally pea soup fog kind of day all day long. We couldn’t see across the road or even to the end of our driveway yet, cars were shooting down the road as if they could see with perfect visibility. I hope there weren’t any accidents from such foolish driving!

5 generation picture:  L-R - Alyssa McCune, Charleigh McCarthy, Lauri McCune, Twyla Erb and Theresa McCune.

Twyla Erb sent me a 5 generation picture of her family. The names are Alyssa McCune, Charleigh McCarthy, Lauri McCune, Twyla Erb and Theresa McCune.

I attended the Ryder Bazaar on Saturday and later Staci, Johnny and Kenny joined us. There were lots of new vendors but sadly a lack of people to buy their products. There was a variety of food offered for sale by Barb Miles. I finally had to have a polish sausage. She was kept busy serving her customers. There were quite a few turkeys given away and luckily I received one.

Dave Kimball and his candy board.

Dave Kimball tuned 65 the other day and of course we senior citizens had to give him a bad time on Monday during the senior citizens gathering. Denise Johnson made him a candy board with the following sayings on it...Turning 65 is nothing to “Snicker” about. Your mind will play “Twix” on you. Your joints will begin to “Crunch”. You will have “Butterfingers”. Your “Whatchamacallit” won’t work. You will be popping pills like “Tic Tacs”. You will make numerous “Fast Break” to the bathroom. You will have “Zero” energy so “Take 5” and have “Mounds” of fun. A “Hot Tamales” like you deserves some “Extra” attention on your birthday!

Dave and Kathy Kimball enjoyed keeping 4 of their grandkids over the weekend, while Amanda and Joe Mccallum and Tristan Kimball went deer hunting. and Tristan (their grandson) got his first deer! Amanda and Joe got theirs shortly afterwards. Dave and Kathy had a fun Saturday on Kathy's 64th birthday at  Ryders annual Bazaar, held in the Ryder Community Gym.  Kathy and Dave's youngest son Carl and his wife, Crystal Cree, their 3 kids, Matayah, Avery and Ean came out and brought pizza for supper.
The weather was beautiful Saturday and there were a lot of new and fun vendors at the Ryder Bazaar.  We appreciate the  Ryder Community Center for putting on this fun event every year. We really enjoy it.
Dave Kimball celebrated his birthday, Sunday a little less chaotic, but never the less, he turned 65!! Joe, Amanda, and Tristan spent the day with Dave and Kathy and told their hunting stories and shared their hunting pictures with Mom and Dad.

The Community Food Pantry would like to tell everyone they appreciated everyone helping them with bags, they now have enough, and for food and money donations. The needed turkeys for Christmas baskets were bought with those donations and other items for the pantry. It was a great relief (says Kathy Kimball, one of the managers), to have these helpful donations come in and ease our money pockets. They would also like to how much they appreciated the anonymous donation of 30 blankets (new). Wow!! They will go out with Christmas Baskets.
The Pantry will be open from 10 to 2 p.m. on November 18th.

I received a letter from Wendell Hjelmstad and he said the following, “Hi Sue, We enjoyed seeing the picture of Carol Hansen, we used to visit with Carol and Wayne when we wintered in Arizona, they also stayed here a time or two on their way south. On some of our visits to ND we had some good times at their Hiddenwood farm with them and their family. Good memories!!! How about a picture of Wayne too? Ann and Wendell Hjelmstad.

Mark and Laurie Reece will be guest ministers at Calvary Church this Sunday, November 19. They will be ministering in the Sunday morning worship service at 10:30am. Laurie is the daughter of Gerald and Delina Johansen and grew up in Ryder. Everyone is invited to this special service as they share the revelation of God’s love that has changed and shaped their lives, family and ministry! Mark and Laurie with their daughter Jubilee will also be sharing with the Upper Room Teens group in the evening at 5:30pm.

Clever Housework Tips for Lazy People

Wise Wanda and Helpful Harry have original tips for how to do housework better, quicker and easier. You get two experts for the price of one, each with a different point of view about housework. They offer invaluable how-to-do housework tips for cooking, cleaning the kitchen, storing food, baking, headaches and leftovers.
Wise Wanda Says: Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips. Helpful Harry Says: Just suck the ice cream out of the bottom of the cone, for Pete's sake, you are probably lying on the couch with your feet up eating it anyway.
Wise Wanda Says: Use a meat baster to "squeeze" your pancake batter onto the hot griddle and you'll get perfectly shaped pancakes every time. Helpful Harry Says: Buy the precooked kind you nuke in the microwave for 30 seconds. The hard part is getting them out of the plastic bag.
I may have more tips next week!

Upcoming events:

Nov. 18: Community Food Pantry will be open on Nov. 18. It will NOT be open November 25th.

Nov. 19: Services at Calvary Church of Ryder at 10:30 a.m with Sunday School at 9:30.

Ryder News Nov 9, 2017

Ryder News for Nov. 9, 2017

Not much news for this week, guess everyone was either too busy loving the snow or hating it to do much in the way of news! What did you do this past weekend? Would love to hear about your first snowfall events. Let me know so I can write some fun news to share. As for me, I just looked out the window and watched the snow come down and hating the thought of having to go out in it the rest of the winter! Ugh!

Johnny McGrath as the Hulk (always have to have a picture of the grandson!)
Ethan Hagen waiting patiently in line for his turn at the beanbag toss.

I went to the Halloween party in Makoti along with Johnny and Staci and we left Kenny manning the candy bowl at the house. Johnny was the Hulk this year, lots of kids (only recognized a few of them) this year and tons of cute costumes! I did manage to get  few pictures. We had 5 kids at our house so lots of candy left for me!! After we got home from Makoti, Staci and I took Johnny around town and out to Alderman’s to get some treats.

Bingo for Friday night was cancelled due to the snowy weather. Staci, Kenny and Johnny came out anyway. She said it was kind of a white knuckle trip all the way but Kenny was bringing some pills out for me and I had stuff to send back with him. They didn’t stay long which disappointed Johnny as he likes to play with these blocks that I have. He wanted to take them home with him but I said Levi plays with them too and he wants to take them home too. Grandma is mean as she intends to keep them here!

Staci’s birthday is (was) Nov. 5th. We took her and Johnny out to the Badlands Restaurant to celebrate. I always get the full rack of ribs so I can have lots of leftovers when I go home.

Carol Hansen and Daniel Starks at Minot Health and Rehab.

Daniel Starks had a concert at Minot Health and Rehab recently. He performed the 40's, 50's & 60's music that the residents loved and many enjoyed singing along. He even had his dad, Pastor Jonathan Starks, join with him on a few numbers. It was especially fun to sing for and visit with Carol Hansen who has been a longtime Ryder resident. Daniel will be doing Christmas music on Thursday, November 9 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at Minot's Marketplace Foods on North Hill. So if you're there doing your grocery shopping, be sure to stop by and say "Hi".

She is the great granddaughter of Evelyth Wohlk of Garrison and Mabel Ike of Minot. Lanie's God parents are Heather Schoenborn and Heidi Walsh of Minot and Dusty Hoffert of Underwood. Four generations attended from the Wohlk and Ike sides. Family and friends gathered together for dinner following the confirmation in Velva.

Ryder News Nov 2, 2017

Ryder News for Nov. 2, 2017
As you read in last week’s news column, my husband, Kenny Bradley went into the hospital last Monday for an angiogram and then an angioplasty. He had 2 arteries that were 95% blocked repaired with 2 stents put into each one. After he was in his room in ICU he suffered a minor stroke which has affected his right arm. He will be starting therapy on Nov. 9th. For the meantime, he is staying in Minot with our daughter Staci.

Kenny, Staci and Johnny joined me for dinner this Sunday and an afternoon visit then later on, Rick Sprinkle and Levi came over to visit. So I was blessed with a visit from hubby, both kids and both grandsons. It was a wonderful day!

Bethany Grace Wurtz and Ruth Wurtz at Bethany’s ordination and installation at Grafton’s Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
Bethany Grace Wurtz with her parents, Gordon and Mary Wurtz at her ordination and installation.

Bethany Grace Wurtz, daughter of Gordon and Mary Wurtz, was ordained and installed as a Lutheran minister at Grafton’s Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church on Oct. 22nd. The Reverend Terry Brandt, Bishop of the Eastern North Dakota Synod was the presiding officiant.
Bethany served an internship at Wenatchee, Washington before being called to Grafton. To her surprise, a group of parishioners from Wenatchee made the trip to Grafton for the ordination. Harvey and Denise Johnson, Ruth Wurtz, Gayle and Arlan Hoffland were all there to celebrate with Bethany as well as her sister Emily and her husband and two children. Ruth’s family all met at Gordon’s place at Thompson Saturday evening for supper and visiting. Gordon and Mary’s son Jacob was unable to attend as he is in college at Boise, Idaho.

John and Janice Warner recently returned from an extended vacation via Viking River Cruises which cruised the Rhine, Main-Danube Canal and Danube rivers.  Fifteen cities in five countries, 1100 River miles. In The Netherlands they visited Amsterdam and Kinderdijk. Germany included stops in Cologne, Koblenz, Miltenberg, Wursburg, Rothernburg, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau. Austria tours included Melk, Krems and Vienna. Others stops were in Budapest Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic. Every city stop included a city tour with wonderful history lessons, information about their town, shops, cultural and of course great food and regional vines and beers. These people are very proud of their beautiful churches, castles, palaces and historical houses. The river trees and grape vineyards were in full fall colors. Each day you could also take optional tours. They had a glass blowing demonstration on the boat one sailing afternoon. This fellow also had an interesting story on how his parents and siblings crossed the border during the war and it was unbelievable. On board there was nightly entertainment, a couple of regional history lessons, Austrian and Hungarian dancers and in Vienna everyone went to an evening concert. They are already planning their next trip.

The 2018 North Shore-Plaza Close Up group’s chicken supper will be at the K-Bar on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 5 p.m. til gone. This is a great way for those kids to make money to go to Washington, DC, so I suggest you take it in if you can. The mothers of the kids make some delicious salads, etc. and the chicken is fantastic. Well worth the money.

Keaton Erhardt’s  confirmation in Bismarck.

Faye and Bud Karna attended their oldest grandson’s Confirmation on Saturday, Oct. 28. Keaton is the son of Kellie and Tom Erhardt of Bismarck. Their church had to have 4 such services due to number of those being confirmed.

Ryder Fall Bazaar and Turkey Drawing in the Ryder Community Club building (old school gym) Saturday Nov. 11, 2017 sponsored by the Ryder Community Club. 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Turkey drawing at 3 p.m.

Daylight savings time ends on the first Sunday in November, which will be Nov. 5th this year!! Set your clocks back 1 hour!!

The Ryder Food Pantry is in desperate need of plastic grocery bags, cloth grocery bags and donations, be it food or monetary. The Christmas season is upon us and we really want to be able to give Christmas baskets to our customers. So far we have 9, 8 to 10lb. turkeys (we need at least 6 more), we have potatoes, gravy, veggies and roaster pans.
We need pies, cookies, apple cider, milk, eggs, buns, canned sweet potatoes, boxed dressing mix, Christmas candy for the kids, fruit, etc.
If you can help, our donation boxes are in the St. John Lutheran Church in Ryder, the Ryder post office, Town and Credit Union in Ryder, or call Kathy at 701-578-5876 or P.J. at 701-240-3964 or send monetary donations to P.O. Box 61, Ryder, ND 58779. We appreciate your support.

The Happy Hour Senior Citizens in Ryder would like to invite all area seniors to attend their meeting on Nov. 6 at noon. The thought of being a “Senior Citizen” turns some people off. The name may be a little misleading as the club is open to those age 55 and older. (now you know 55 is not old anymore). There are some interesting activities on the horizon but the club is always open to more ideas. A meal is served with a short business meeting following where ideas are shared. Our November meeting is the start of our new year. Our officers have been elected ( so you don’t have to worry about getting nominated for an office). Come and visit and check the club out...who knows, you may even decide to join. We need more members and some more ideas of things to do, will you help us? Oh by the way, the meal is free and is delicious. We all get stuffed!
