Ryder News for May 25, 2017

Congratulations to Remington Bigelow. He was chosen as one of the 16 high school graduates to receive a $1,000 Rotary Scholarship from The Rotary Club of Minot. He is the son of Steve and Deann Bigelow of Makoti, ND.

Gus Mueller and Dwight Paulson.
Dwight Paulson and Gus Mueller ran into each other in the Delta Sky Club in Minneapolis. They had a nice visit about their days in Ryder.

The Makoti American Legion will hold services on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at the Makoti Legion Hall. The Auxiliary will serve dinner after the service.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Ryder High School, Class of 1967 is planning a 50-year reunion in Ryder on Saturday, June 17, 2017. After 7:30 p.m., former class members will be roaming Main Street in hopes of visiting with old schoolmates, local friends and families.  Class of 1967 graduated with 20 members (15 remain) and most are attending.  Class members encourage everyone to join them at 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening to catch-up on the past half-century and relive the late 1960s. Some class members also plan to attend the Hiddenwood Picnic on Sunday, June 18th.

John and Janice Warner traveled to Dubuque, Iowa last weekend for John's graduation ceremony from Wartburg Seminary. He is part of the ELCA TEEM seminary program. His ordination is at St John's in Ryder June 24th at 5 p.m.   Great driving weather and the countryside was so beautiful with the blooming lilacs and flower apple/fruit trees everywhere. Crops were seeded but not up yet.   A stop or two in Amish country to view the sites and a little shopping.  On the trip to Dubuque they spent a night in Minneapolis with the Savian and Warner-Richter families. Everyone attended a wonderful play-musical at the Minneapolis Children's Theatre, production of A Year in the Life of Frog and Toad. So very well done. Return trip was a stop over in Red Wood Falls and Strawberry Lake, MN and Grand Forks, ND.

I would like to remind all veterans that served in the US Armed Forces during the period of Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 that they will be recognized at the Ryder Memorial Day services. Betty Mahoney heard about this Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Pin Program and along with their daughter, Susan, has organized it for our Ryder program.  Everyone one who served during that time from our area will be recognized and if present, receive a lapel pin. Let’s support this effort to make our tribute to vets a good one this year and attend the services.

Harley Jones called Faye Karna, his old classmate, to wish her a Happy Birthday and to ask what was new here at Ryder.
She informed him about the Harley-Davidson event coming to Ryder and he would liked to have attended. But, he is headed for El Salvador during that time with a church group to volunteer. He reported that his wife, Bonnie, is doing well and is now driving again.  He wanted to greet all of you Ryder folks.

Joylea Bowen Knutson visited with Faye, her cousin, for around 2 hours on the phone last week. It was fun for Faye to get an update on their family and to hear that all of their siblings except for Betty are going to be able to attend their brother’s burial (Jimmy) at Arlington on June 1. Betty just recently had bypass surgery which prevented her from traveling. The twins, Sharon and Sharlene, still live in the Fargo, ND area, while Milton and Joylea are in Minot, ND; Judy is in MN; Lorinda is in Garrison, ND: and Betty is in Florida.

The 115th Hiddenwood Old Settlers Annual Picnic is coming up! It will be held on Sunday June 18th, 2017 (Father’s Day) on the Hiddenwood picnic grounds 8 miles south of Makoti on County Road #9. There will be an All Faiths Church Service at 11 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch (plates and utensils provided). The program following lunch features the talent of Shelby Huston, 2016 International Fiddle Champion and Minnesota State Fiddle Champion. Other talent is also welcome on the stage. The Hiddenwood Ladies’ Famous Pie will be for sale after the program.

Ryp to Ryder is coming up real soon, June 3rd as a matter of fact! I was asked why Ryder was chosen for the Harley-Davidson group to come to. I talked to J.J. Olson of Minot and she told me that they liked the name of Ryder and are using it to promote Riding Season and to inspire people to get out and Ride and discover the open road this summer! She said the event is for everyone whether or not they are motorcycle enthusiasts. There will be something for the whole family! The Ryp to Ryder will be a daylong all family event.

A benefit ride and live auction will be held for Gage Hillestad, a fifth grader at South Prairie School who had a stroke on Jan. 29th. The funds raised will help the Hillestad family with medical and travel expenses.

Some of the other things going on that day are, the flag raising ceremony at 11:30. The Christian Motorcyclists Association will also be in Ryder to Bless the Bikes. Bouncy Houses will open at noon and knocker balls at 1 p.m. The benefit bike run for Gage Hillestad starts at 12:30 and follows a route from Ryder to Magic City Harley-Davidson in Minot, Velva, Benedict, Max, Makoti and back to Ryder. A live auction will start at 7 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Hillestad family. Other highlights of this fest include a burnout pit, the Harley-Davidson Revel 1 truck and the Harley-Davidson Jump Start Rider Experience. A street dance with music by Moments Notice will be held both Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3. There will be vendor food trucks available at the fest. Olson said there is limited free primitive camping available. This event is being planned with the Ryder City Council.

The Ryder Water Tower was painted last week. It was painted white with an orange band around the top and bottom. The words Harley-Davidson on one side and Ryder painted on the other side.

May 15, 1950 Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson:

“Mrs. Ray Olson, Roxann Fay and Miss Lundahl and Mrs. Ella Benson of Ryder called on Ed Olson's Thursday evening.
Telephone linemen out of Ryder are having an awful time trying to put up poles, straighten tangled and broken wires after the sleet and snow storms of three weeks ago,  Some places can’t be gotten to at all yet because of the water and mud.  There has been no telephone service south of Ryder and towards Roseglen for nearly three weeks.
Mrs. Soren Sorenson has had good luck with her early baby chicks in spite of all the snow and cold.  She has lost only one out of 300.
The Orrin and Gilbert Johnson families and Ole Johnson have returned to Blue Hill after spending seven month at Sweethome, Oregon where Orrin and Gilbert worked in a lumber mill.”

Kallie Jo DesRoches, daughter of Alex and Kelsey (Reinisch) DesRoches.
Congratulations to Kelsey and Alex DesRoches on the birth of their daughter Kallie Jo who was born April 29, 2017. She weighed in at 8 lbs. 2 oz. and was 20 inches long.
Her Grandparents are Jody and Peggy Reinisch, and Lorn and Corinna DesRoches.
Great Grandparents: Wendell and Marlys Hanson, Mary Vaughan, Ron and Sharon DesRoches.

Ryder’s Food Pantry will not be open in June because of activities in the town and gym. Please pass this along. See you in July. If you need help please call 701-578-5876. They will be open May 13th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please pass this on.

Faye Karna had to share that she had a great birthday. She wanted to tell everyone that she really appreciated all of those who sent cards by mail or electronically, including singing cards and to those who called.

Last Thursday she met a former classmate, Rose Dokken Brown, in Minot for dinner and then went to her apartment to visit longer, which started the fun. Then, on Saturday she and Bud met her sister, Gayle and her daughter in Bismarck for dinner and were joined by Kellie and Kyann and their families. She got such beautiful plants, gift card and many more nice cards and she feels very blessed!

Gayle Albert and her daughter traveled to Bismarck last weekend to attend an open-house for one of Jerome’s nephews. While there, Gayle met with Gary Sorenson and Doug Wurtz to make some final plans for their 50th class reunion.  This reunion is going to be in Ryder on June 17 and most of the 1967 class plans to return. So, if you would like to visit with them, watch for further updates and try to join them. They would enjoy that.

A surprise birthday party for Pat McKinzie’s 80th birthday, was put on by his kids last Saturday night in Garrison at the Stoney Inn Steakhouse. They had decorated, brought a nice cake and had a wonderful gift card bouquet for him, that equaled $80.00. The supper was great too. The grandkids and great grand kids and Julie, played some instruments and sang the Birthday Song. It was a fun evening of taking pictures, visiting and discussing the surprise.

On Wednesday night, the night of his birthday, friends gathered at the home of Joyce and Pat McKinzie's at their farm in Rolette to help Pat celebrate his 80th. A 3 tiered lemon cake was served with ice cream and coffee and a wonderful evening of visiting again.

Pat says he appreciated very much all the greetings from friends that sent cards or made phone calls or emailed him on Facebook.

Pat and Joyce McKinzie and John and Shirley Brandvold also attended the Spring Concert at the Max School on Tuesday, the 9th. The grandkids and all the other kids done a great job! Shelsey Brandvold played her Clarinet in the band and Stetson sang.

Cemetery mowing has been set for Wednesday May 24, at 6 p.m. In the case of inclement weather we will move it to Thursday night. Hope to see you all there.

There will be no Bingo on June 2 due to the Ryp to Ryder event, see you the first Friday in July.

I really did not know this: “Today I saw a man selling poppies stop a lady and asked if he could re-position her poppy. While doing so, he told that lady she should wear the poppy on the right side. The red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives, the black represents the mourning of those who didn’t have their loved ones return home and the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the war destroyed so much. The leaf should be positioned at 11 o’clock to represent the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time that World War One formally ended. He was worried that younger generations wouldn’t understand this and his generation wouldn’t be around for much longer to teach them.”

May 15, 1950 Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson.

“Another big improvement in the community is recent years was the building of the REA line through Blue Hill last Autumn. Only six homes remain without electricity.
May 1950 can certainly be put on record for its snowfall. Several farmers were entirely out of hay on Friday and Saturday. Bernard Kraft, who has about 50 head of cattle, tells us he didn’t have any hay so had to grind up 100 bushels of wheat to feed to his cattle. Ole Folden was one of the luckier farmers who had hay to divide up with a few of his neighbors to tide them over until the snow melted. Roads were nearly impassable during the weekend and Monday, but the good North Dakota sun came out in its full power and very little snow was left in short order and roads are drying fast. The school children at Blue Hill could have put this down in their diaries: snowsuits and high rubber boots in May!
The big slough in the school section across from Blue Hill School is full of ducks.  Sometimes it seems there’s hardly room for another duck to swim. Not many pheasants are seen around Blue Hill this spring.
Mrs. Carl Anderson and Mrs. Donald Anderson and Donna Mae left Thursday via Great Northern from Minot to spend a week with relatives at Fargo, Barnesville and Pelican Rapids. Mrs. Donald Anderson will visit especially with her mother, who is ill in Fargo.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peterson went to call on Mrs. Jackson Wednesday and bring her some eggs. Mrs. Jackson lives all by herself on her old home place with Mr. Jackson having passed away a year ago. Neighbors try to call on Mrs. Jackson as often as possible and bring her supplies. She gets very lonely as she is unable to get out much, only when a friend goes and takes her along somewhere.”

Ryder News for May 11, 2017

Congratulations go out to Marvin and Maureen Hagen who became the grandparents of twin baby girls on May 7th. Parents are Ryan and Jade Hagen. Both babies are doing fine and hopefully I will have more info for next week’s news!

The McGraths came out to Ryder for Bingo Friday night and we all went to try our luck at winning the big pot! Alas! Not a one of us won a thing except for Kenny. He won two 4 corners prizes of a free card. Maybe next month we will have better luck.

St John’s dining room starting to fill up for the Mother Daughter luncheon.

Staci McGrath and I attended the Mother Daughter luncheon at St. John’s Lutheran Church here in Ryder. Wow... for people that came for this and the church basement was full again. There were many delicious and varied salads and not much was left when it was over. I had made a taco salad and didn’t have much left to bring home! After eating we all made our way upstairs to be entertained by the “Da Lutherlic Ladies”, and entertained we were as they had everyone in stitches with their antics and singing.

There is an upcoming Rip to Ryder Fest June 3, 2017, in Ryder, ND. The itinerary for the day is still in the works. Corporate Harley-Davidson will be present, they are sponsoring the event to promote their Harley-Davidson Rider Academy (Abate does our Rider Academy and does qualify for the Harley-Davidson Rider Academy). They will be painting the Ryder water tower Harley-Davidson style. They will also be filming a national commercial. Harley-Davidson is going to announce this event nationally, June 1, 2017. They may want to film a large group of bikers riding on Main Street in Ryder. A time for the filming of this has not been scheduled yet. It should be scheduled by next week. If anybody would like to participate in the filming, all they have to do is show up. As I learn more about times I will keep you informed. This is just a HEADS UP notice to you.
Clint Romesha will be present to participate in the Flag Raising Ceremony.
A Benefit Ride will leave Ryder at 11:00 AM, $20.00 per bike and the proceeds will go to Gabe Hillestad to assist his family with medical expenses. Gage Hillestad, is a fifth-grade member of our South Prairie community who suffered a stroke Sunday, January 29th. He is in stable condition but fighting for his life. His mother and father are missing wages from work to be with him aside from the medical bills associated.
The band Moments Notice will be playing in Ryder Friday and Saturday evenings. The city of Ryder has offered to provide free primitive camping. Budweiser and Morelli’s will be involved in this event as well. Food trucks will be available. There will be Bouncy Houses, cotton candy and Knockerball for family entertainment.

The Ryder Veterans’ binder is being updated at the museum. The pictures received so far will be displayed at the Memorial Day program again but not individually. Two lists have been found and the veteran’s names were listed according to the Ryder church they/family attended at the time of their enlistment.  A third list has been made of Ryder’s WWI and WWII Veterans.  It is not known where this list originated but was found among papers. Also, an old Fargo Forum was found among the Daniel Jackson papers that gave an alphabetical list of all the North Dakota men that died in WWII.  The names that may be recognized by you readers were Melvin Beyer, Melvin Bjordahl, Thomas Nelson, Joseph Nush, Alton Olesen, Bernard Peterson, and Richard Walsh of Makoti. Those listed with a Ryder address were Carl Eckstrom. Arnold Freelander, Herbert Meyer, and Milton Quandt.
It stated that the end of the war meant the homecoming of over 54,000 ND Servicemen.  They listed the county figures and for Ward County there were 1035 enlistments and 493 discharges. Some names listed in those discharges were Phillip Hanson, Joseph Hjelmstad and Macy Paul of Ryder; Edward Arndt of Emmet; Frank Weigel of Roseglen.
It was also interesting to read that to secure victory the war cost the US $350 Billion. This meant that more than 5 lives more were lost and more than 6 dollars per dollar was spent over the cost of WWI.
The peak strength of the armed services at any given time was about 11,500,000 men and women. Roughly a third of the casualties were incurred and a third of the money spent to defeat Japan. The rest went toward subduing Nazi Germany.

Vietnam Veteran Pins will be presented at the Ryder Memorial Day Celebration at the Ryder School Gym by the American Legion LC Jensen Post # 99 of Ryder on Monday, May 29 at 10 a.m. The veteran does not need to be a member of the American Legion. Eligibility requirements are: Living United States veterans who served on active duty in the U. S. Armed Forces at anytime during the period of Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 regardless of location. For more information and to help organizers plan for this celebration, contact Susan Mahoney at 701-730-5772.
