Ryder News for Jan. 19, 2017

Hiddenwood Winter Fishing Derby.

I see there were a few brave souls that ventured out onto Hiddenwood Lake braving the cold and snow for the Hiddenwood Winter Fishing Derby on Jan. 14th of this year. There were 39 adults and 11 juniors fishing this year. The ice was 2 ½ feet thick and above zero temps and no wind.

And the winners of the Derby were:
In the Adult Northern Class-1st place, Dalton Walsh with his northern weighing 8.40 lbs.: 2nd place for Adult Northern Class was Joe Lautenschlager with his northern weighing 8.15 lbs.: And 3rd place in the Adult Northern class there were two winners, Darwin Van Dyke and Justin Johnson with their northerns weighing 7.70 lbs. Congratulations!

The Adult Perch Class was won by Lacy Grimwood with the perch weighing .10 lbs. Congratulations!

In the Junior Northern Class: 1st Place: Gage Schenfisch with his fish weighing 7.05 lbs. : 2nd Place: Clay Schenfisch with his fish weighing 6.50 lbs.: 3rd Place: Dylan Pank with his fish weighing 5.95 lbs. Congratulations!

In the Junior Perch Class the winner was: Violet Braaflat with her perch weighing .10 lbs. Congratulations!

John and Shirley and Kraig Brandvold, Tom and Linda Madsen, and Joyce and Pat McKinzie were Christmas Eve supper guests of Lee and Julie Brandvold and kids. They had a wonderful prime rib and shrimp scampi supper and a fun time of exchanging gifts and playing some games with the kids, Stetson and Shelsey. Joyce said the blowing snow was really bad when they left the Brandvold place about midnight and they could not see the road at times, going into Ryder. They were so glad to get into town. They were snowed in at Pat’s house on Christmas Day and could not get to Bismarck to have Christmas Day with Pat’s son, Mike and family. Julie brought the kids into town so they could play some card games and have some company for a few hours on Christmas Day. It was such a nasty day, they hated to see them come in but they had a good day after all and it helped pass the time and day. Kids can really help to entertain!

They were not able to get out of Pat’s yard until Tues. A good neighbor up the street, Jodi Reinisch, came with his Payloader and moved some snow for them out of Pat’s driveway so they could get out on Tues. They appreciated it very much and said they may need him again if this weather doesn’t let up.

Kenny and I had a good neighbor from up north, Ross Sherven, come several times to blow us out and push snow for us. It was a little much for our bobcat to handle and we needed a path made to the two propane tanks.

Ted and Kay Hofstad Upgren visited with Faye and Bud Karna in Bismarck.  Kay and Ted are getting ready to go to a warmer climate for several months; so, they decided to visit the Karnas before leaving.  Kay, Bud and Faye all went to Ryder High together and find it fun to get caught up on former classmates and other Ryder people.

I told you that I would identify all those Larson kids this week that I had the picture of in last week’s paper. Dig out last week’s paper and follow along..  Starting at the Right side, oldest to youngest: Eileen, Richard, Eugene, Joan, Byron, Ronald, Sylvia, Michael, and Linda. The youngest is Nancy and she wasn’t in the picture, either she was napping in house or hadn’t been born yet! Hope most of my readers got the names right and in the correct order.

The Ryder Community Food Pantry will be open Saturday, January 21st, 11a.m. to 1p.m. due to donations of fresh products that need to be given out. The Soup and Sandwich Social will also be at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time and we can get back on schedule with the openings for the food pantry!

Dave and Kathy Kimball met 2 of their kids; Carl and Crystal Cree and their kids Matayah, Avery and Ean; and Amanda and Joe McCallum and their 6 kids; Mackenzie (home from college), Tristan, Kaleb, Autumn, Aspen and Colton at Olive Garden the Saturday before last, so they could have lunch with them all and so Dave could give Joe; his son-in-law, a wood chest that Dave had made for him to keep his military memorabilia in, since he retired from the Air Force. Joe was very surprised and loved all the caring and love that went into building it.

Dave and Kathy were also snowbound at home for four days, due to 4 foot snow drifts on the gravel roads and the county not having time to clean them.  Kathy was a little worried about missing 3 days work and Dave hadn't been able to open the Senior Center for breakfast or to be at the Senior center meeting.
Judy Kimball called Kathy and asked her if she had her bags packed to come live with them in Colorado for the winter! Watch out Dave and Rick, you never know what those 2 are up to!!

I had a very busy few days last week starting on Jan. 6th. I was scheduled to have chemo but when I told the nurse how tired and short of breath I was, she got permission to do blood work on me. It was discovered that my hemoglobin was real low again and I was scheduled that day for 2 units of blood. But there was a snafu with the blood that was sent to the lab and they had to run it several times to get a donor match. So instead of having 2 units of blood, I was only able to receive one that day and scheduled for the next one on Monday, Jan. 9th.
Of course I had all kinds of other medical things scheduled for that Jan. 9th as well starting with a PET scan at 9:30 to check on the cancer. Then I was scheduled for a mammogram at noon and then a visit with primary Dr. at 1 and then finally the blood transfusion at 2. I thought that I would have a chance to eat after PET scan before mammogram. Wrong!! My Dr. called and wanted to know if I could come in around 10:30 as he had a meeting at 1. Yippee. There goes my lunch. I told him about PET Scan but said I would get there as soon as possible afterwards. Luckily, I got in early for scan so was able to get to Dr. all the way across town in time for that appointment. Then we scurried all the way back across town to make the mammogram appointment. Now to eat...by that time we were starving as we hadn’t eaten yet that day. After eating, I called Cancer Care to see if I could get in early and luckily I was able to and had my transfusion early! It’s surprising how a little blood can make you feel so much better. Maybe I should check into becoming a vampire!

Now I have been running a fever and having some pain in my left side kind of by armpit for a while so Kenny thought maybe we should go to ER to have it checked out so Tuesday evening the 10th of Jan. off we go. This time I was out of there in 4 hours, a miracle. I had blood work, an EKG, chest X-Ray and finally a CT scan. They said lungs, heart and blood work were all clear but the CT scan showed that there was something, either a tumor or swollen lymph nodes in the armpit area. Great!
Then on the day of my birthday I woke up looking like I had the mumps..swollen lymph glands on both sides of jaw and neck. Hmmm. Well, since I was scheduled to see cancer Dr. on Friday I just waited to show him. I did get some good news. PET scan showed no additional cancer activity and what is there is under control for the time being and mammogram was all clear. Dr. did decide I should have a biopsy on lymph nodes under arm so will have that shortly. In the meantime I have to be off chemo and aspirin til then. I have my suspicions that by the time they get this biopsy set up, the lymph nodes in the armpit area will be gone. The ones on jawline and neck are almost gone now!

We haven’t had a chance to celebrate either mine or Johnny’s birthday as he has been sick but I think maybe this next week we will all be well enough to celebrate!

I think I will skip the Old Time News for this week as you probably have a headache from reading all this!
