The following is a little something by Gus
Mueller which I found to be rather cute so thought I would share with my
readers.
HOW MUCH IS A BUTTON WORTH . . . REALLY?
Okay,
be honest, how many of you remember this reunion button from 1989? I do, as
coming back to Ryder for this event with my family was the highlight of the
summer, and I think I might have even saved the button for a year or so after.
My reason for posting this photo, however, is not really to reminisce about the
reunion (although we can do that later), but to point out its selling price on
eBay. Any guesses of what the asking price might be?
Well, for the past month or so, it has been
listed for $165.00. Yes, you read that right, One-Hundred-Sixty-Five dollars!
But . . . here comes the really good news—it just went on sale for 60% off, and
now can be had for the discount price of $66.00. Now I know it is a really nice
button, containing a lot of important information (says there will be “fun”),
but $165.00? Or even $66.00?
Any memories of what happened at this
reunion? I suspect there was a parade, dinner in the park, and a softball game
or two, although I don’t recall any of those events. What I do recall, however,
was that on Saturday night, before the street dance started (can’t tell you who
the band was), loud music was playing over the main street loudspeaker system.
As I walked out of the bar, drink in hand, I heard the song “I Won’t Back Down”
from Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever CD, which had only been released a couple
months earlier—the same song and CD I had just been listening to at my home
back in San Francisco. It just didn’t seem right. I’m in RYDER. And they are
playing this modern, hip song? The songs were supposed to be Wooly Bully, King
of the Road, I Got You Babe, or any of the other hits of 1965—the year I moved
away. Ryder was not supposed to change!
And finally, back to the button. I just did
a quick check at eBay, and I see there is a 1961 Makoti Reunion button for sale
for $55.60. So, if a MAKOTI button goes for $55.60, the $165.00 asking price
for the Ryder button actually sounds about right!

Sometimes
having a birthday celebration requires a lot of planning! Not so when George
was having his 95th and his granddaughter, Traci Officer French, and her family
of husband, Nathan, and their children, Kayli and Tanner, from Savage, MN drove
up a few days early. They surprised George with a huge star-shaped balloon.
They renewed lots of fun times with Grandpa and went out to dinner. Later, on
Feb. 5 which was his birthday, George served cake to his SHA friends while the
afternoon was spent visiting with relatives and friends and more cake. He
received dozens of cards and phone calls. On Sunday George and Jeanice joined
friends at Bread of Life Church and enjoyed more cake. He had a memorable time
with many and thanks Rod and Kathy and others for their assistance.
Looks like that is the end of the news
column for this week, I had to submit it a little earlier as I have Dr.
appoints all day Monday.
