Ryder News for Feb. 26, 2015

I have a couple guesses on the mystery photo. Keith Kronbach said he would be a poor relative if he didn’t identify his family. They are from left to right: Elinor West, Kathy Kronbach Kallestad, and Grandma Martha Kronbach. Sonja Kline also guessed they were Kronbachs.

On Sunday Feb. 15th, Kenny and I along with Don and Elaine Alderman, Tony Petersen, Cash and Skylar attended a belated birthday party for Johnny McGrath who had turned 6 on Jan. 12th.

Kenny and I attended the Medical Benefit at the Ryder Gym Sunday morning. The Old Ryder Jaycees served pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausage, coffee and juice. There was a fair turnout of people to support this cause. I do have a few pictures to share of some of the cooks. I didn’t get all of them as Jon Hanson was hiding behind a door and Gaylen Larson was trying to hide with him. Little do they know that I will get them at some other time.

St. John’s Lutheran Church services will be held at 8:00 a.m. for the month of March.

Remember the first Friday of every month is Bingo Night at the Ryder Gym and…March 6th is the first Friday so let’s all gather at the gym for several rousing games of bingo and see if we can win the jackpot! Remember this is sponsored by the Ryder Community Club to raise money to keep the gym in operation for area functions.

Well there sure wasn’t much news for this week and I don’t know if I will have any for the next week or so. I am going to Mayo Clinic but don’t have a date and time yet so will continue to do the news as long as I am home and able to do it.

Have a great week and remember, SPRING is just around the corner.

The following is a little something by Gus Mueller which I found to be rather cute so thought I would share with my readers.

HOW MUCH IS A BUTTON WORTH . . . REALLY?
Okay, be honest, how many of you remember this reunion button from 1989? I do, as coming back to Ryder for this event with my family was the highlight of the summer, and I think I might have even saved the button for a year or so after. My reason for posting this photo, however, is not really to reminisce about the reunion (although we can do that later), but to point out its selling price on eBay. Any guesses of what the asking price might be?
Well, for the past month or so, it has been listed for $165.00. Yes, you read that right, One-Hundred-Sixty-Five dollars! But . . . here comes the really good news—it just went on sale for 60% off, and now can be had for the discount price of $66.00. Now I know it is a really nice button, containing a lot of important information (says there will be “fun”), but $165.00? Or even $66.00?
Any memories of what happened at this reunion? I suspect there was a parade, dinner in the park, and a softball game or two, although I don’t recall any of those events. What I do recall, however, was that on Saturday night, before the street dance started (can’t tell you who the band was), loud music was playing over the main street loudspeaker system. As I walked out of the bar, drink in hand, I heard the song “I Won’t Back Down” from Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever CD, which had only been released a couple months earlier—the same song and CD I had just been listening to at my home back in San Francisco. It just didn’t seem right. I’m in RYDER. And they are playing this modern, hip song? The songs were supposed to be Wooly Bully, King of the Road, I Got You Babe, or any of the other hits of 1965—the year I moved away. Ryder was not supposed to change!
And finally, back to the button. I just did a quick check at eBay, and I see there is a 1961 Makoti Reunion button for sale for $55.60. So, if a MAKOTI button goes for $55.60, the $165.00 asking price for the Ryder button actually sounds about right!

There will be a Breakfast Benefit at the Ryder Gym on Sunday Feb. 22, 2015 from 9:00-1:00 with the proceeds going to help area people with Medical Needs and Travel. This is sponsored by the Old Ryder Jaycees.

Sometimes having a birthday celebration requires a lot of planning! Not so when George was having his 95th and his granddaughter, Traci Officer French, and her family of husband, Nathan, and their children, Kayli and Tanner, from Savage, MN drove up a few days early. They surprised George with a huge star-shaped balloon. They renewed lots of fun times with Grandpa and went out to dinner. Later, on Feb. 5 which was his birthday, George served cake to his SHA friends while the afternoon was spent visiting with relatives and friends and more cake. He received dozens of cards and phone calls. On Sunday George and Jeanice joined friends at Bread of Life Church and enjoyed more cake. He had a memorable time with many and thanks Rod and Kathy and others for their assistance.

Looks like that is the end of the news column for this week, I had to submit it a little earlier as I have Dr. appoints all day Monday.

Ryder News Feb. 12, 2015

Receiving a letter in the mail from the Ward County Sheriff’s Department tends to make one a little paranoid! Kenny was the recipient of one on Tuesday and I immediately wondered if he had finally been caught on camera running thru a yellow light in Minot! Whew, what a relief when we read the letter and saw that it was a letter from the Sheriff asking for a donation for educational materials for a child safety and drug prevention education program.

I received word that David Muhlbradt, an old friend of my family had passed away on Jan. 29th.  He was originally from the Raub area as I also am and he lived about 3 miles from us. His mother Doris worked at the Raub Post Office when my mother who was the Postmaster needed a day off. His parents were Herman and Doris Muhlbradt. David is survived by his wife, Pat; sons, Hunter and Scott; two grandchildren and one great grandchild; brothers, Richard, Herman (Jr.) and Danny. Those wishing to send a card or special message to the family may send them to Pat Muhlbradt, 607 Borchardt Ave, Underwood, ND 58576.

The Ryder Community Club has donated use of the Ryder gym for the Prairie Ryder 4-H group to hold their meetings. They met at the Ryder gym on Monday, February 2, 2015. President Daniel Starks lead their monthly business meeting. They then had a Valentine's party where they made Valentine's treat boxes as their 4-H project, exchanged Valentine's treats and enjoyed hot cocoa and snacks provided by the 4-H moms . Sue Williams is the Prairie Ryders 4-Club Leader.

Ron and Muriel Peterson have been in Mesa, AZ since Jan. 4th. They had to come home early as her mother Ester Streeper got sick, was in the hospital, and now has moved to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center at 2425 Hill View Avenue in Bismarck. Ron and Muriel and Marlene Streeper have been cleaning out her apartment. They figure it may take them a while to get it all done.

Muriel says her mother received a phone call saying a friend or relative had died and left her a large amount of money. She was to send them a certain amount of money (not sure if it was $50 or $550) to obtain this large sum of money. She simply told them to deduct the amount they wanted from the total and send her the balance. Muriel says she thought that was pretty quick thinking for a 94 year old lady!

Sonja Kline and her daughter Lorna recently spent a week in Hawaii. They left on Jan. 28th and returned on Feb. 5th. She said it was so very enjoyable. They went to Maui and rented a condo with a view and what a spectacular view it was!  It was meant to be a leisurely trip. They went to different beaches, enjoyed WONDERFUL food, and spent a rainy afternoon at the aquarium.  And…of course, went to a Luau, which was so much fun. It consisted of a pig roast and wonderful food to accompany it, a great show and great music. They sat beside a couple from Minnesota which was enjoyable since he was a Norwegian! They spent a little time in the hot tub at the resort where they stayed, did some shopping (she bought a mu mu) and just "hung out" in the condo and at the beaches. Sonja also tried and enjoyed several different exotic drinks. She said she didn't really care for the Mai Tai so experimented with different ones (she said that was fun!)  I guess you could just say that they enjoyed the "Maui thing". She said it was a wonderful trip including the flights.

St. John’s Lutheran Church Ash Wednesday services are Feb. 18th at 7:00 p.m.

There will be a Breakfast Benefit at the Ryder Gym on Sunday Feb. 22, 2015 from 9:00-1:00 with the proceeds going to help area people with Medical Needs and Travel. This is sponsored by the Old Ryder Jaycees.

There will be an Informational Meeting on Max Public School Bond on February 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Max Public School Lunch Room.

The Max Public School Bond Vote will be held on February 20th from 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. in the Max Pre-School/Board Room. Watch for signs. Absentee ballots can be obtained from the Max Public School. You can get applications for a ballot off of their website (www.max.k12.nd.us), or by contacting Natalie Hauf at 701-679-2685, or stop by the Max Public School Office.

Many of my older readers may remember Teresa Weinand (married to Tom) who was from the Raub, Roseglen and Parshall areas. She is currently in the Sunset Nursing Home in Mandan and wouldn’t mind if you stopped to visit. She has a sign on her door that says, “If I’m sleeping, wake me up as I’d rather visit than sleep.”

Well, that’s all I have for this week. Be sure to get your news to me so we can share it with the world. You may not think it is interesting but I bet others would like to know what you have been up to!

Have a great week, stay safe on the roads and stay warm! See ya next week, same time, same place!

Deb Peterson receiving $2500 check from Tom Rafferty of Verendrye Electric.
The Ryder Community Club could not be happier says Community Club President Deb Peterson. Tom Rafferty presented her and the Ryder Community Club a check for $2500 from the Operation Round-Up program of Verendrye Electric Cooperative. Deb said this would make the final payment to Main Electric for the electric hot water boiler in the Ryder Gym.  So if you have ever wondered what Verendrye does with the Operation Round-Up money they collect, this is your dollars at work for the betterment of a community.

Evelyth Wohlk celebrating her 96th birthday.
Family and friends gathered together to help Evelyth Wohlk celebrate her 96th birthday on New Year’s Day. Those present were Darci and Clarence, Justin and Julie Behles; Darla and Derrick, Dillan, Dannican and Deven Rasmussen; Lydell and Wendy Wohlk; Heather, Matt and Lucas Schoenborn; Heidi and Brian, Dalton and Triston Walsh; Nathan and DelRae, Lanie, Nia, Jetta and Jaeda Wohlk; Mable Ike, Joan Bynum; and Gloria Carbogal. Dinner was enjoyed by everyone, especially the cake brought by Gloria. The afternoon was spent visiting and playing the annual bingo game. Evelyth still lives by herself at the apartments in Garrison.

Two weeks ago, Pastor Chuck and Jill Galloway attended a hockey game in Minot to watch their oldest grandson Noah Galloway. Noah plays on the Junior Varsity League for Century High School.

Last weekend, the Galloways were at Lake Metigoshe for a spiritual renewal retreat for the clergy and their spouses. This was a gift from the Prairie Rose Parish. They also had a chance to travel to Rolla and visit with one of Chuck’s cousins for the afternoon.

Looks like we will have 6 more weeks of winter as the sun was shining here this morning and if we had a ground hog, I know he would have seen his shadow just like Punxsutawney Phil saw his this morning.

Don’t forget the first Friday (Feb. 6th) of the month and that means there is BINGO at the Ryder Gym at 7 p.m.

Have a great week and remember, spring is just around the corner and they are forecasting more nice weather in the weeks ahead.
