Ryder News for July 11, 2019
I only had a few guesses as to the Mystery Photo from last week. Claudette Brandt, Jill Brandt, Lorraine Nelson, and Darlene Gossage were
the ones with the correct guesses. The girls in the photo were: Sonja
Eide (Kline), Claudette Nelson (Brandt), June Sorenson, Myrna Nelson (Blackstead), Janice Stueflat (Eick), and Jean Stueflat (Maass).
There is no Mystery Photo for this week!
Wednesday,
July 3rd visitors at Lorraine Nelson’s home were Greg Nelson of
Bismarck and Michelle and Jen Dunn of Eugene, Oregon. On Sunday, July
7th, dinner guests of Lorraine Nelson were Tom and Leslie Weigel and 6 week old
Merrick of Bismarck and Kim and Curtis Edwards of Plaza. Later that
day, Tim and Annette Nelson and Kyle, Kayla and Skylar Schatz of Minot stopped by to visit after being at the lake.
I
rode along with Lorraine Nelson out to Doris Ann Zieman’s home to help
her celebrate her birthday. Others there that day were 2 of the Zieman
daughters, Melanie and Valerie and Valerie’s husband; Don and Karen
Bradley and Roger Nogosek.
This
Sunday, July 14, Calvary Church will not be having their service in
Ryder. They will be joining with other churches in the area for a
special service at Oak Park in Minot at 10 a.m. The guest speaker is
Ramin Parsa who was born into a Shiite Muslim family in Iran. His life
was changed by Jesus! Bring lawn-chairs and a picnic lunch or purchase
lunch from food trucks that will be available. Everyone is invited!
The families of the late Martin and Bertina Peterson held their annual reunion, Sunday June 30 at the Ryder Community Center.
Those attending were Olive Boots, Shirley Schieve, Dennis and Mary Peterson, David and Marcia Haugen, Melissa and Keanin Haugen, and Rondi Deaver all from Minot; Brian and Julene Gutknecht; Curtis, Kiera, Savaya,
and Kaylee Peterson all from Bismarck; Nancy Schuelke, Eden Prairie,
Minn.; Kenny and Donna Christiansen, Kenmare; Kari Mart, LaMoure; Terry
and DelRaye
Johansen, Dean, Jennifer, Lora, Carson, and Lanie Rockwell, LeRoy and
Sandra Peterson, Ron and Muriel Peterson, and Bruce and Deb Peterson
all from Ryder.
Ardis Neshem says, “If
you go to the bookmobile in Ryder, be sure to say “Hi” to the
“Bookmobile” lady. She is my daughter, so she has a “Ryder” connection!
Her name is Janet Gregory.”
Tom
and Kellie Karna Erhardt hosted a July 4th party at their home. Many
Erhardt relatives and friends attended and enjoyed the large variety of
food and drinks. Tom made his great pulled pork as a main feature. Faye Karna attended as did Kyann
and her daughter, Taya. Taya stayed with Grandma Faye and they went to
view the amazing fireworks display from the capitol grounds.
That nasty cancer seems to touch every family. One dealing with it right now is a former Ryder resident named Darlene Schiewek Franklin of Oregon. Her family, Carl and Bertha Schiewek,
lived east of Ryder before moving to Oregon. She attended the country
school east of Ryder and did attend Ryder High before the family moved.
She would have been in the 1956 class with Marlene Afdahl,
Ardis Larson, Ardell Folden, Donald Bradley, Byron Paulson, Opal Shafer
and Leo Brandt. The ones we have lost from that group are Marlene,
Byron and Leo.
We
received responses to the Blacksmith Ryder Recalls. A phone call from
Barbara Barlow, who now lives in Georgia, confirmed that Max did indeed
have a shop 3-4 miles east of Ryder. A former neighbor, Milton Bowen,
reported that he drove out past there last summer-2018-and the cement
floor Max used in his shop is still there. Milton's dad, Jim Bowen, had
Max repair items as did other former farmers in that area such as Elmer
and Art Hanson, Elmer Wilson and John Petersen.
Max was married to Mary Mock who had two previous sons, Walter and Ervin. They sold the farm to Ed and Myrtle Schiewek and moved to OR. Max died in 1947 and is buried in Minot. Walter loved being in ND so came back often to stay with the Schieweks. He was confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Ryder with Bob (Robert) Schiewek. Walter died in 2011 while Ervin lives in OR.
Kari
Mart from LaMoure visited at the Ron Peteson home over this last
weekend. Ron and Muriel, Rondi Deaver and Kari Mart visited with Jeanice
Peterson Officer at Manor Care. Her daughter, Nancy Schuelke from
Arizona as well as George Officer were also visiting at that time.
Ron
and Muriel Peterson went with Kari Mart to Carrington for their
grandson Tate’s ball game. Then, they went on to LaMoure to spend the
night at Kari’s. The next day they traveled to Wishek for another of
Tate’s ball games.
Last
Saturday, the 6th they were among the many friends and relatives at
Randy and Brenda Henne’s home for a potluck supper and fireworks.
Speaking
of fireworks, I went to my brother’s place on July 4th for his
fireworks display. His kids, Glen Ludwig, Dave Ludwig and Carmella
Evanson were there as well as Dave’s fiancee, Mckenzie Wilson and Dick’s wife, Debbie.

A
friend of my daughter, Staci, went to a thrift shop in Minot and purchased some
TV type trays. As she was looking at them, she saw one that said, Best
Wishes, Ole Olness, Ryder, No. Dak. She was very curious about this person as she knew that Staci was from Ryder. I found out about Ole Olness from Ryder’s Golden Jubilee Book, 1906-1956. I copied the info from the book and sent it on to Staci to share with her friend.
Some
information that I found out was, he was born in Norway on Jan. 8, 1871
and he came to America in the spring of 1891. He attended Concordia
College in Moorhead, Minn,
for one year to learn the English language. He was married in 1900 and
they moved to Ryder in June of 1907. After coming to Ryder, he operated a
General store in partnership with Peder Hanson and Tom Brusegaard. A few years later, Mr. Olness became the sole owner of the business. Later, the Olness Merc. was operated by Mr. Olness and his son Sigvold until 1947 when Sigvold purchased it from his father. All 5 children of Ole Olness attended school in Ryder and graduated from Ryder High. Mr. Olness passed away May 1, 1948.

July 14--9 a.m. Church worship service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Makoti.
July 14--10:30 a.m. Church worship service with Communion at St John’s Lutheran Church of Ryder.
July 24--Bookmobile will be in Ryder, Wednesday, from 12-12:30 p.m.
July 27--10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Ryder Community Food Pantry is open at the Community Gym. Free lunch will be served.
