Ryder News for March 26, 2020

I knew it, I just knew it! Spring might be here but Winter doesn’t want to let go. Grrr. We received around 4 inches of snow this past week altho now that the weather has promised to warm up it should melt fast, which will make for a fun muddy mess in the house once again. Oh well, what will be, will be.

Vanessa Fransen’s winning art titled “Dream Big”

Vanessa Fransen's art was selected as Grand Champion prize winner in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Student Art contest. She will receive a $500 prize.  Vanessa lives in Makoti, ND and is in the 6th grade at North Shore Plaza.  Her parents are David and Laura Fransen. Her grandparents William and Karen Rafferty of Watford City are Eagles members and told her about the art contest and helped her submit her art work. Vanessa's other grandparents are Larry and Jan Fransen in Bismarck.
Vanessa's winning art was made with prisma color pencils. Her piece is titled Dream Big - it shows a sleeping kitten dreaming of being a tiger.
Congratulations Vanessa!
Here is the website that shows the winning art. There are several other winners from ND.  https://www.foe.com/Programs/Childrens-Art-Contest
Students from the US and Canada participated.

The Eagles' annual Children’s Art Contest provides youth in grades 3-6 an outlet to showcase their creative skills for a chance to win a cash prize. By igniting the creative process while teaching the core values and beliefs of The Fraternal Order of Eagles, they can help build future generations of People Helping People. The Fraternal Order of Eagles encourages the participation of youth throughout the United States and Canada (including children with no current ties to the F.O.E.) and urges each of their Aeries and Auxiliaries to get involved by educating local schools and community programs about the Children’s Art Contest.

Ron and Muriel Peterson have recently returned from spending some winter months in Mesa, AZ. While there, they lived at Tower Point Resort. Quite a few “Ryder” friends dropped in to visit. Sharon and Jerry Franklin and Mike Haugen lived on the same street. Some visitors that dropped by were Hal and Jeanna Severance, Dwight Paulson and Debbie, Rodger Haugen, Nancy and Tom Schuelke and Kari and Ana Mart. Ron and Muriel also visited with many friends and relatives: Karen and Don Jones, Dale and Carolyn Anderson, Jeannie and Larry Schoenwald, Gary and Sharon Zahnow, Kristie and John Starkweather, Mel and Gloria Henne, Jarvis and LaVonne Jungling, Glenda and Dean Mortenson, Loren Sveum, Myron Sveum and his wife, Colleen Sherven, Spanky and Gloria Larson and Julie Hill.

Ron and Muriel Peterson, Jerry and Sharon Franklin and Mike Haugen attended the ND Picnic while in Arizona, but because of such a huge crowd, they didn’t run into many that they knew. There were some people from Minot and Garrison also there.

Remember  the Ryder Community Gym will be open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone that wants to walk.

Ryder News for March 19, 2020

SPRING IS ON THE WAY!! No more snow, warm weather and all the other wonderful things with winter finally over..we could only wish!! But...spring is really on the way!

Wow, I can’t believe how the gas prices are going down. In Minot today the price was $1.99 and the price in Max today was $1.85. So, we can save money on gas to enable us to buy toilet paper if there is any to be found!

The Ryder-Makoti Rural Fire Protection District will be POSTPONING their Annual Meeting from March 23rd until a later date.

Dave and Kathy Kimball had 3 of their grandkids from Wednesday evening to Sunday afternoon, due to Minot school spring break. They all enjoyed being at the farm.
Kathy and Dave would like prayers for their nephew in Colorado, Brett Bogert, who had an old Bronco 4x4 fall on him when he was working under it. He was able to wiggle out and call his wife Erin to come take him to ER. He suffered broken ribs and a broken collar bone. They did surgery immediately on his collar bone. Now the long haul of mending.

Ugh...4 inches of snow here in Ryder Saturday evening thru Sunday night. I had to go to Minot Monday morning for my tax appointment and thank goodness for my son Rick. He rescheduled his Dr. appointment in Bismarck so he could drive me to Minot. I sure am glad that he did as the roads, except for Highway 83, weren’t all that great. Highway 28 was the worst with lots of ice and snow, Highway 23 was better and of course Highway 83 was fine. We did some shopping, picked up pills, I had another appointment and then I bought lunch as neither one of us had breakfast.

Depending on the Coronavirus Pandemic, there will be several benefit fundraisers this month. I will keep you informed if the benefits will be canceled. I did hear that there should not be gatherings of more than 10 people due to the pandemic but I don’t know if that is enforceable.
There will be a benefit for Billie Miller, widow of Art Miller, on March 21st at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder to help with the bills. There will be a free will offering for supper starting at 4:30-7:30. There will be a silent auction and then starting at 8 p.m. music by Musik Worx.
There will be a benefit for Nathan Wohlk to help with his kidney medical expenses, on March 27th at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder starting with food served from 4:30-7:30. There will also be a silent auction and then music by Dave Diffely.

Remember  the Ryder Community Gym will be open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone that wants to walk.

Upcoming Events:

Mar. 19--First Day of Spring!!!!
Mar. 21--4:30-7:30 Benefit for Billie Miller at the Ryder Star Bar in Ryder.

The Ryder Rosehill Cemetery Association says they truly appreciate the donation they received from the 2nd Annual Wild Game Sausage Cook Off.
The sausage cook off was held on Feb. 8th and sponsored by Rod Johansen’s Nakota Outfitters of Ryder. I had the original story in my Feb. 20th news column.

This coronavirus sure has people in a panic even in good old ND. Stores in our local area are out of hand sanitizer, antibacterial soap and even toilet paper!! So far, knock on wood, we don’t have any cases in our state but...wash your hands frequently and get used to doing it so it will become a habit.

It seems that I am at the ER a lot. I went there a few weeks ago to see if I had pneumonia...I didn’t. Then I went in for a biopsy that my cancer Dr. ordered and now today (Monday) I went over again as I wasn’t feeling well and thought it might be my heart. Luckily they didn’t find anything wrong but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

There was a record crowd at Bingo Friday night. All the tables were full and all the bingo daubers were in use. I even managed to get lucky and win $51. Lots of people there that I didn’t know and a few that I did!

Remember  the Ryder Community Gym will be open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone that wants to walk. I walked last Friday and managed to walk 9 laps which I believe equals a half mile.

Upcoming Events:

Mar. 15--9:15 a.m. Sunday School at Calvary Church in Ryder for preschool through adult.
Mar. 15--10:30 a.m. Calvary Church Worship Service in Ryder.
Mar. 15--9 a.m. Worship service at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Roseglen.
Mar. 15--10:30 a.m. Worship Service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Roseglen with communion.
Mar. 18--6 p.m. soup and sandwich with Lent Services at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ryder.

Ryder News for March 5, 2020

I guess that Mystery Photo from last week was just too easy as I received lots of answers and they all correctly identified Danny Hoffer as the Mystery Person. These were the clothes that he wore to his daughter Katie’s wedding. He cleans up pretty nice. Ha Ha Danny, just have to tease you a little! Hank and Almira Hoffer were his parents.

Arthur Miller
The city of Ryder lost one of their residents this last week. Arthur R. Miller, 43, Ryder, ND, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from injuries sustained in an accident in his garage. The Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday March 4th at the Plaza Hall. The doors opened at 10 a.m. so people could stop in and sign the guest book. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Well, I suppose it had to come...I’m speaking of Daylight Savings Time! It starts on March 8th and we lose an hour of sleep. Remember it’s spring forward, fall back. I guess I’ll be crabbier that usual for awhile until I get used to it!

Well, since March came in like a lamb..I wonder what it will go out like! The old saying is, “In like a lamb, out like a lion”, or "In like a lion, out like a lamb". It kinda scares me with all the different kinds of weather we have been having, cold for a few days and then nice and warm and then cold again. Then the Ides of March are coming up and so are the basketball tournaments and it seems that we always get a real good snowstorm along about that time!

The North Dakota Community Foundation hosted it’s 53rd Annual North Dakota Picnic on March 1st at Mesa’s Red Mountain Park. This picnic is a gathering of anyone with North Dakota ties who either lives part time or permanently in Arizona and features polka and oldies music, vendor booths and a classic car display. Last year’s picnic drew about 2,000 people. There are quite a few snow birds from our area that attend this picnic and I am hoping to get the names of some who attended so I can share it in next week’s column.

There will be bingo at the Ryder Community Gym on Friday, March 6th starting at 7 p.m.

Remember  the Ryder Community Gym will be open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone that wants to walk.

Upcoming Events:

Mar. 8--10:30 a.m. Worship Service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ryder with communion.
